Wikipedia Saves Public Art! - Individual Presentation

Registration Czar – Responsible for identifying the necessary collections information that needs to be in each article—and that the Wikipedia articles work in a similar way as a content management system does. Should work with the SOS! Database Czar.

Collection Management System Analysis

After looking at the three collections management systems, Wikipedia, SIRIS and Remembrance, Faith and Fancy: Outdoor Public Sculptures in Indiana, I have observed many pros and cons about each system.

Rememberance, Faith and Fancy: Outdoor Public Sculptures in Indiana, is a hardback book published in 2005, discussing notable public works of art around Indiana using research compiled by Save Outdoor Sculpture!. I found this method to be a bit cumbersome. First, unless you own the book, you must borrow it from a library or historical society. This makes this system less easy to access than an electronic system. Also, while out in the field, it would be much easier to do a quick electronic search on an iPhone than to carry this clunky book around. Also, the book seems to be written more like a text book than a catalog. While it is sometimes nice to read information in a story book type context, this style made it difficult to quickly locate a particular subject if necessary. I found the condition information as well as the photographs to be minimal. Also, because this is a published text, it cannot be updated without publishing a new edition, therefore the current edition, published in 2005 was out of date in many areas.

The Smithsonian public database is an electronic database that includes Save Outdoor Sculpture! Records on the Institution Research Information System (SIRIS). Upon initially using this database, I found it to be a bit frustrating because there seems to be no rhyme or reason to what is returned when you search. It would be nice if results could be returned alphabetically or even by age. Beyond that, it would be nice if you could select the category in which you would like to perform your search. These changes would help to narrow down the list of results and make the searching process a bit more logical. However, I did find that once you have spent a little time using this system, it becomes less trying. I do find this database to have a nice amount of information about many sculptures, however, I believe more information could be added based on the detail of the SOS! condition reporting form. Also, I prefer the “Database” type format that the information is provided in. This design makes the information much quicker to digest than the storybook form of the previous system.

Wikipedia is an electronic database that works like an encyclopedia. Often, I find Wikipedia articles to be very interesting and helpful because the information and format is a nice mix of the previous two systems. I selected three articles written about public art that I felt represented three different time periods as well as have differing levels of celebrity. The three articles I selected: Cloud Gate, LOVE sculpture, and the Trevi Fountain have very interesting differences and similarities. I chose Cloud Gate because it is a well known sculpture nationwide and rather new to Chicago. I find its Wiki article to be very well written and include a nice range of information. The opening paragraph is detailed and descriptive and would give enough information to someone who just wanted a brief overview. However, I enjoy that, further down the page, you can find sub-categories of additional information about the artist as well as the design, construction and themes of the work if you are interested. I chose the LOVE sculpture in Indianapolis, because while it’s design is well known, the sculpture itself is more of a local treasure and while it is not brand new, it's not ancient either. This Wiki article differs from the previous article because there is no additional information listed here. All this article will give you is a brief overview of the works, their locations, and a brief mention of the significance of the design. I would like to see additional information about the artist as well as the individual pieces themselves. Also, it would be interesting to mention the maintenance of this piece, as I know the original has gone through rather extensive conservation. Finally, I chose the Trevi Fountain because it is known throughout the world as well as is much older than the other pieces. This article is different from those mentioned above because there is no brief overview. There are only two sentences that sum up the facts of the work. If you would like to know any additional information about the work, you must read into the sub categories, and even then, considering the celebrity of this work, the information seems brief. Of these three articles, I think Cloud Gate is a very nice mix of information and the information is listed in a logical format. The authors of this article have used pieces from all three of these systems to make their article work, and the result is quite useful.

All three of these databases could be very useful to anyone, depending on what the goal behind their research is. For a person that is simply trying to learn more about sculpture in Indiana, the SOS! Hardback book is nice. It provides the reader with a storybook guide to all of this public work. However, if you are in need of specific information about a specific piece, SIRIS or Wikipedia would be better options. Overall, I find Wikipedia to be a nice mix of the other two systems and will be a nice system for our project. Wikipedia can be written like a storybook, similar to the SOS! Indiana book or formatted like a catalog similar to the SIRIS database, or both of these methods can be combined. It would be easy to create a format where there was a brief catalog type list of information with a short overview of the work, while things could be further explained in more detail as the viewer worked their way down the page. --Kchattin (talk) 15:52, 27 October 2009 (UTC)

Categories

The three categories I think should be included in all of our articles are Outdoor Sculptures in the United States, Outdoor sculptures in Indiana and Outdoor sculptures in Indianapolis. Though these categories are broad, I think all three of these categories are important because they put the sculpture in a larger context, outside of IUPUI. These sculptures should all be recognized on a national level as well as a local level. From what I can tell, these categories fit within one another, so if you visit the U.S. category, then select the Indiana category and finally the Indianapolis category, our sculptures will be listed there. If someone was to simply search for Outdoor Sculpture in the United States, and all of these sculptures share this category, the visitor can drill down and find that Indiana and specifically Indianapolis will be very well represented, as we should be. --Kchattin (talk) 15:52, 27 October 2009 (UTC)

Sculpture image copyright problem

I see that you have uploaded several images that are being used in The Herron Arch 1. You may not be aware that freedom of panorama does not apply in the USA, so only the artist can release images of their work under a copyright licence though I see that you, as the photographer, of the sculpture are releasing the images into the public domain. Unfortunately you cannot do this. You should read Commons:Freedom of panorama#United States to familiarise yourself with this topic if you don't know about it. I would suggest that all images are tagged for deletion and the lead image is retained. It already has the correct licence but under a fair-use, as mentioned in that copyright tag, no filled in rationale has been added. I can help you with that. Happy to help out but what I stated above is basically it in a nutshell; under FOP in the USA the artist owns the derivative images of their art. So did you actually read and understand the FOP problem? On the other hand the use of non-free images is tightly controlled and generally you can only justify the use of one such image in an article under a fair-use claim. Per the non-free content criteria a fair-use image MUST comply with all 10 WP:NFCC criteria; that is policy and stronger than the legal understanding of fair-use. BTW I noticed in Template:IUPUIPublicArt that there are a number of similar styled articles to The Herron Arch 1 but by other editors. Do you have anything to do with these edits or articles? You may find it useful to read my image copyright information page that covers many copyright issues that crop up. Yes, I believe I understand what this means. I added a Non-Free Rationale to the main image; is this what you were suggesting? I will continue to do this for all photographs, as all are being used with educational purposes only, as that is the purpose of my course. I have revised File:The Herron Arch 1 Proper Left.JPG but you cannot claim PD for a non-free image and I have tagged it for size reduction. Under fair-use the resolution should not exceed 300px on the longest side. I'm sorry but "educational purposes only" is not freely licenced for Wikpedia and not valid for us. Either an image is freely licence or it is not, if not it must comply with all 10 of the non-free criteria. There is on better way, we don't just bend the policy to suit some images and not others, that is what policy is for. To be honest you are wasting your time trying to justify more than the one image in this article, they will still be nominated for deletion as breaching FOP, but if you have time to add rationales that will be rejected be my guest. If I am understanding you correctly, I should delete the gallery images but can retain my main images. Is this correct? Will the same be true for Weather Tower as well? I see you marked my main Weather Tower image for speedy deletion, but if I give that proper rationale as I did with the Herron Arch 1 photo will I be able to retain my main image and delete the gallery? Images

Hello. The problem right now is that the images are properly tagged as non-free works, but they're not used in any articles. See criterion F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion.

Why, you might ask, aren't they being used in any articles? After all, there are articles about the Herron Arch and the Weather Tower. The reason has to do with Wikipedia's non-free content criteria, a policy that provides very strict rules about using non-free images. Under point 3a of those criteria, multiple images cannot be used when a single image will suffice. Editors have deleted the image galleries from both the Herron Arch and Weather Tower articles because the galleries violate point 3a.

The whole area of copyright is a complicated one, and I can't explain it very well, but those are the reasons why the images are likely going to deleted next week. I just wanted to cover all of my bases and make sure there was no way these images could be appropriately used because I think they benefit the article greatly. Question for Malik Shabazz‎

I noticed your recent question on Malik Shabazz‎'s talk page. Firstly, freedom of panorama still applies to this image, so it is still a derivative work and not copyright to the Indianapolis Museum of Art even if they think it is their image to do what they want with it and secondly, we do not accept images with an incompatible licence that are limited to Wikipedia only. I thought that by now, with the notes here and on the project pages, you would clearly understand freedom of panorama as it applies to sculptures in the US.
