Welcome to Wikipedia!!![edit]

Hi, USERNAMEHERE, Welcome to Wikipedia!

I hope you like this place — I sure do — and want to stay. Before getting too in-depth, you may want to read about the Five pillars of Wikipedia and simplified ruleset. If you need help on how to title new articles check out the naming conventions, and for help on formatting the pages visit the manual of style. If you need help look at Wikipedia:Help and the FAQ , plus if you can't find your answer there, check the Village Pump (for Wikipedia related questions) or the Reference Desk (for general questions)! There's still more help at the Tutorial and Policy Library. Plus, don't forget to visit the Community Portal. And if you have any more questions after that, feel free to post them on my user talk page or place {{helpme}} on your talk page and someone will be by to help you shortly.

Additional tips[edit]

Here's some extra tips to help you get around in the 'pedia!

  • If you want to play around with your new Wiki skills the Sandbox is for you.
  • You can sign your name using three tildes (~). If you use four, you can add a datestamp too. Five will get you the datestamp only.
  • You may want to add yourself to the new user log.
  • If you ever think a page or image should be deleted, please list it at the votes for deletion page. There is also a votes for undeletion page if you want to retrieve something that you think should not have been deleted.
  • If you're still entirely confused, or would like to get a better grasp of your wikipedia skills, and you have an IRC client (or don't mind getting one), check out the Bootcamp. It's not what it sounds like, but it is fun and can help you with your editing skills.
  • If you're bored and want to find something to do, try the Random page button in the sidebar, or check out the Open Task message in the Community Portal.

Happy Wiki-ing.Kf4bdy talk contribs

The Tom Delay article has cleraly been vandalised. My edit only pointed this out, obviously in the wrong format. Unfortunately, you were inaccurate and now your error count is 2, lowering your accuracy.

sorry...

Cool edit[edit]

You didn't fix any vandalism, Kevin Cucci, is in fact very cool.

A piece of cake to bake[edit]

Well I just googled the popular meme quote "A piece of cake to bake" in quotations and only got 172 unique hits[1]. Meanwhile, I type in "Mustard man" also in quotes and get 675 unique hits [2]. Other than that, any references in popular culture to a character are usually put on a separate page. For example, Sean Connery's page doesn't exclusively say "you're the man now dog" since there is a separate page for it, YTMND. Also the Orihime Inoue does not exclusively mention Loituma Girl since there is a separate page for it. Anyway as you said, it would not be right to put pedophilic content or suggestions on a page frequented by children. Gdo01 14:02, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Template[edit]

How did you get the welcome template that you are using? I use the more common {{welcome}} message. Sr13 08:20, 19 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed that on at least [page], your welcome template is broken and corrupted the page - I was able to partially fix it by adding the tag to the call right after "Hi, Gurko", which fixed the font. However, I also had to insert the "Table of Contents" box from my own talk page, and I haven't figured out how to remove it without the corruption returning (I'm thinking there is a "|"}" that needs to be inserted or removed).

If it wasn't written very well, why didn't you just fix it apposed to deleting the whole thing?

What exactly was unrelated and/or biased? Correct me if I am wrong, but nothing. And SPAM, no wtf? Am I talking to a php program here or something?

What is so bad about saying "you"? Should I have said someone?

"was not all relevant to the subject of the article" EXCUSE ME!? I happen to know exactly what I am talking about, why else would I contribute to the wiki if I didn't know what I was saying?!

"duplicated content in other articles" – So you are saying I copy and pasted information from other articles? What are you NUTS?

"could be seen as part in advertising" - For who, and what? I didn't post anything with my name on it, and FYI nothing I posted was mine.

..."vandalism tag on it". You have *got* to be kidding me? I have contributed quite a fair bit to the hl2dm community, and now for some reason you decide to delete it? Not like it's that hard to correct the grammar yourself, but no... You just go and deleted it?

"but I'm afraid after you've removed all the stuff in your edit that was against policy" What? I didn’t remove anything? What are you going on about?

The thing which really pisses me off is that you go so far to even remove an external link from the EXTERNAL LINKS SECTION!? !?—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Pincus666 (talkcontribs) 22:20, 11 January 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Regarding Wendy Bagwell[edit]

If you will take a look at the discussion page on the Wendy Bagwell entry, you will see that I clearly indicated why it was removed. This article is one I wrote for my own website. It was lifted word for word, without permission and gives me no credit.

You can view the original version here: http://www.musicscribe.com/2005/04/wendy-bagwell-biography.html

I wrote the original article on April 10, 2005.

Wikipedia is a fine website, but not when users steal what others have written. At the very least, when I take down a violation of my copyright, that should be respected.

Welcome message[edit]

You might already have realised this and corrected it, but your Welcome message needs a </font> at the end, otherwise it swallows up any messages left after it. (See the History of User talk:Kinghitz for an example.) --Mel Etitis (Talk) 08:38, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Not wanting to be rude, but I can't tell if the welcome message should still look as it does after the </font> is inserted. It's very untidy. - Dudesleeper · Talk 22:05, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

possible display issue with your welcome messages[edit]

Hi Kf4bdy - way back when, you welcomed me (thanks again for that by the way!) with a welcome message on my talk page. I've just noticed that my talk page now looks screwy - like this and I've tested it, and if I comment out your welcome message, it looks fine again.

I don't want to leave it commented out permanently as it was a nice message that I appreciated, so I was just wondering if you had any idea why it now looks funny? I've gone the whole way back through the history, to the first edit when you left the message, and even there it looks funny, which leaves me with two possiblities - either something that is referenced by your welcome message (a template?) has changed, and is affecting the message on my talk page, or else its not the message but rather how my browser is rendering it - but I've checked in IE and Firefox, signed in and signed out.

Another reason I'm contacting you is in case it is an issue that affects all the welcome messages you've left.

Any light you can throw on this would be great.

  • I see you tried fixing it, but the fix might cause other problems. If the first thing you do in the message is open a div tag, it should be closed last. You misplaced the font tag in this message. - Mgm|(talk) 10:19, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

West Plains MO, Stephen W. Thompson[edit]

He was my father, and this is likely to be my only try at Wikipedia.

Two things—No one writes articles about their father. Second, there is no way I can verify this. You are only supposed to add verifiable material to Wikipedia. Deletion of "Mitchell Waldman"[edit]

I would like to question your deletion of the Mitchell Waldman page as "An article on a self-published non-notable writer" (wow, that's everything that a writer wants to hear!) on the grounds that

(1) I have had writings (fiction, poetry, essays, and legal articles) published in numerous publications, including Poetpourri, Wind Magazine, Poetry Motel, Poetalk, the Poetry Peddler, Poetry Forum, The Advocate, Desperate Act, The Hazmat Review, Mobius, Innisfree, the Parnassus Literary Review, Verbal Expression, Bold Print, The Rochester Times-Union, American Jurisprudence 2d, American Law Reports 4th, and the anthology, Beyond Lament: Poets of the World Bearing Witness to the Holocaust (Northwestern University Press, 1998).

(2) My novel has received numerous positive reviews at such places as Book Review.com, Critic's Corner, WordWeaving.com, Scribe's World, The Charlotte Austin Review, WXXI Radio (see http://mitchwaldman.homestead.com/reviews.html

(3) I was also co-editor of the anthology, Wounds of War: Poets for Peace (PublishAmerica, 2006) which is admittedly self-published but includes the writings of many individuals, including renowned poet, William Heyen, and is a worthwhile (almost notable?) work on the response to war of persons in all walks of life.

I seek your reconsideration, based on the above points, of the "Mitchell Waldman" wikipedia page.

Now if you think that I am a notable Chemist and environmental engineer, please add my name. Thanks a lot. Achafi (talk) 04:00, 31 October 2008 (UTC) Achafi —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.181.177.62 (talk) 03:36, 28 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, but...[edit]

I have actually been around Wikipedia for a while, and know something about how it works. I have not been active lately, but I am not a stranger.

I did not check to see who edited my comments recently. But understand (on the off-chance that you were the one), that I had reason for posting the comments that I did, and I object very strongly to my comments being casually modified by others when it is discussion, not posted as fact on the main page. I posted on the discussion page, not the main page, and what I posted was suitable material for discussion, not deletion.

In fact, from reading some of the material on this page, it appears that you have a habit of editing or deleting material that you personally deem not suitable. I am simply curious: what authority do you claim for doing so?

Our names[edit]

Hey John and John. This is seriously strange. I'm from St.Louis, MO and I Googled my name also trying to locate family members. I came across this page and look what happened. Please gentlemen contact me at j_lattier@yahoo.com. I would like to get to know more of my family members.

To Mr Gilles[edit]

Dear Gilles

First of all, despite of being Chinese, There are attempts to empeach me contacting you (block or something so !)

So please answer to me at my Chinese email address guozhangluo@yahoo.cn

Now, after having seen you raesonable inteventions, i would ensure you that the "suspected page" as you said is not so "suspectable" as long as it was PUBLIC, Discussed and edited by tens of contributors. (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boubaker_polynomials)

Please just help us verifying that the NOTABILITY rules for polynomials in WP are :

1. Have they been the main subject of (at least two) published papers, or chapters in a book, or an entire book about this sequence? 2. Are they cited in MathWorld or PlanetMath ? 3. Are they cited in in the Online Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (OEIS)? 4. Do they have a demonstrated (and/or) published expression?

We got the proofs that the polynomials FULFILL these rules..

If you think we are wrong please tell us.

In everycase, one can count with your helpfulness, honesty and fair.

Please answer in the email address guozhangluo@yahoo.cn otherwise the contact will be difficult ... Thank you a lot

Welcome message[edit]

[I don't know if it's a template or a copy and paste job, but the wlcome message you left on User talk:JayzinSmith swallows up the table of contents inside of its borders so that it's difficult to see when it's the first thing on a page... and considering that most welcome messages probably are the first thing on someone's talk page, that's not a good thing. DreamGuy (talk) 13:12, 7 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your interest. I'm having a lot of difficulty in understanding the various instructions for doing things in Wikipedia. For example, someone wants to delete a photograph that I put in Wikipedia about a year ago (I'd insert a reference here but cannot access that message while writing this message). I took this photo. It is mine. There is a message about what I have to do to keep this photo in place in Wikipedia, but I'm totally baffled by this message. I just do not understand it. It is written in jargon that is meaningless to me. Looks like I'll have to let this photo be deleted (probably already has been), even though it is my photo and there is no copyright problem. I'm seriously reducing my contributions to Wikipedia, because of this problem of unintelligible instructions. Smith9847 (talk) 15:29, 9 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Are you sure it was on the real Wikipedia? There may be fake sites trying to steal you passwords. Also, it may have been a false alert. I'm not sure it is possible to embed keyloggers into articles here.  fetchcomms 01:04, 2 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It certainly wasn't from a Wikipedia article. You may have had another tab open in your browser, or you may have been on a mirror, as fetchcomms says, but you can rest assured it didn't come from Wikipedia. :-] Fleetflame · whack! whack! · 01:12, 2 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Keep Wikipedia Free and Open[edit]

My primary reason for using Wikipedia: This website has references to tidbits of information that can be researched, allowing others to contribute. Unconfirmed data can be misleading, but has a distinct value as to how it was interpreted or perceived. I do not believe everything I read, but will attempt to accumulate as much information possible to validate or invalidate. For this reason, information should be free and open.

Intellectual Property (IP), used with permission is information. I do not condone the use of IP without permission, but there are occurrences, in which its use is unintentional. The use of citations for these works have almost, always been applied. Of course, it implies that one understands the value and use of citations. Outside of copyright laws, citations give credit to individuals or entities.

Laws: manufactured by political pressure by those individuals or interest groups with the most money. (I am not sure if this is a quote)

When laws are applied: interpretations by law enforcers.

When laws are tried: a decision of a person, or of peers, in favor of the winning argument, pro or con.

The Law, in contrast: the author(s) intent is not always as written.

My definition of "Public" - Two persons: One with the opinion; one whom supports or opposes.

History has always been written by the winning factions. (I am not sure if this is a quote, either, but it makes sense)

Here is a link to History News Network that has quotes accumulated by "Mr. Szasz was a professor of history at the University of New Mexico. He died in 2010 at the age of 70. He assembled this list of historical quotations for HNN in 2005.", from an article from History News Network: History News Network 19JAN2012.

Regarding the status of the "Asia Institute"[edit]

I deeply appreciate your concern for the status of the Asia Institute and your interest in an accurate representation. Let me first give you the history of the Asia Institute and we can then discuss what form of documentation would be appropriate to effectively assert the present status of the Asia Institute. As we were featured just yesterday on YTN News in Korea and we have a series of publications, and are pending for an ISBN number, it is in everyone's interest that we set the record straight. The following information may be sensitive and I do not wish to have it featured on the actual entry. I will give it to you in full in the interest of establishing trust.

Emanuel Pastreich (myself) was the founder and continues to be the director of the Asia Institute. The Asia Institute was founded in June of 2007 when Pastreich was serving as a professor at Solbridge International School of Business in Daejeon. The Asia Institute was run initially under the auspices of SolBridge, although many of our events had nothing to do with SolBridge and there was a consensus at SolBridge that Asia Institute was not appropriate to a business school in that it focuses on public policy, the environment and technology. In June of 2010 I was informed by the President of SolBridge, John Edicott and Vice President Sangjik Jung that Solbridge had decided they were not interested in running or working with the Asia Institute. They did not not make any claims on the name in any sense since then.

Solbridge took down all links to Asia Institue in June of 2010. From that date on, Pastreich ran the Asia Institute as an association without any status as a corporation or NGO. He continues to conduct research, hold seminars and make videos.

Pastreich left Solbridge in February of 2011 and moved to Kyung Hee University in Seoul, where he teaches today. From July of 2011, Pastreich started to hold Asia Institute events together with the noted Korean NGO GCS (Global Common Society) http://www.gcs-ngo.org/. Asia Institute reached an agreement in August of 2012 to function as a subsidiary of GCS and that is Asia Institute's current status. It is a unit of GCS which is a Korean NGO founded in 1975. This video from yesterday's news clearly shows an Asia Institute event, complete with the Asia Institute sign being held at GCS:

http://www.ytn.co.kr/_ln/0101_201211030510297393.

We have asked for a link from GCS website to Asia Institute's website asia-institute.org and we will have one, although we do not have one yet.

Solbridge's website features an Institute of Asian Business

http://www.solbridge.ac.kr/index.php/faculty-a-research/institute-of-asian-business

which has absolutely no relationship with the Asia Institute. Just take a look at the difference should be clear.

The Asia Institute has established itself as a significant research institute in Korea and its publications, its appearance in the Korean media, its continued seminar series in Seoul make it clear that it deserves recognition. Solbridge was in a sense the home of Asia Institute from June 2007-July 2010, but since then there has been no relationship whatsoever.

Do let us know what might be an appropriate manner in which to document this transition. Perhaps it would be sufficient to have a link from the GCS website?

Thanks again for your interest,

Emanuel Pastreich — Preceding unsigned comment added by Epastreich (talkcontribs) 10:43, 3 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mike,

Not sure what you're talking about (you sent me a "talk" about something) that an album must have a link to be mentioned. Please CAREFULLY check the edit history of the article you're responding to... You'll see the account that actually did whatever it is you're reacting to here. Click on the <view history> tab at the top of the article and poke around until you find the edit you're referring to - there you can also see who made the edit.
