Apparently not, when I looked it up in a dictionary (admittedly not a great one, Encarta, but still ...). See my edit-summary ... can you let me know if it's a problem? Hi again, having looked up the Oxford English Dictionary (online if you can access it) all uses relate to the person and events that occur after death, including the birth of children. While literary or other works can be regarded as posthumous, they are referred to in that way because they were published, discovered, or made available after the death of the author, not because they were recognised in some way after the author's death. It may be hair-splitting but I still think the usage is incorrect. Thanks for the tip on the film. I'll look out for it. [←kteachk also?]

Very well, the question concerns this edit and the ones preceding it. The text:

White's novel The Vivisector received posthumous recognition in 2010 when it was shortlisted for the Lost Man Booker Prize for 1970.

Now, I have checked the OED entry (on my hard-drive, rather than log into the current version online); it confirms my own impressions about the word. Kteachk has said that "all uses relate to the person and events that occur after death". But strictly, posthumous is not applied directly to the dead person but metonymically to their survivors, works, and the like: "Used generally of anything which appears after the death of its originator" (OED). Citations at "posthumously" are also instructive, like this one: "1783 Atterbury's Corr. I. 23 note, The ‘Register’ [of bishop Kennet] was posthumously published, from his MS. Collections, in 1728." Working from this, it seems to me that if a register can be "posthumously published", it can receive "posthumous publication"; and from there it is a short step to "White's novel received posthumous recognition." I have no issue with Tony's use of the word. It is a little out of the ordinary, that's all. Most uses of "received posthumous recognition" found in a suitably constrained Googlebooks search have the person in subject place; but in the hits we find these:
  • "Among his works for the stage, most of which received posthumous recognition, are Die Zauberharfe, a three-act melodrama first performed at Vienna on August 19, 1820; Alfonso and EstrelJa, ..."
  • "Tresguet worked during the latter years of the 18th century, and beginning in 1831 his ideas received posthumous recognition in a book that had a large readership."
  • "In his lectures at the London School of Economics over many years —which, remaining largely unpublished, have received posthumous recognition through the efforts of pupils and colleagues ..."
  • "The suit was successful, and, after years of litigation, the primacy of Goodwin's patent received posthumous recognition in 1914." [Only somewhat questionable as a parallel to Tony's use.]
  • "... had meant to him were such that they received posthumous recognition." [Snippet view; unable to check the referent of they.]
So of the 44 genuine hits in a well-focused Googlebooks search, we could say that at least 10% support Tony's use. I don't say it is optimal; but it's perfectly acceptable. This would be among the sound alternatives:

White received posthumous recognition for his novel The Vivisector, which in 2010 was shortlisted for the Lost Man Booker Prize for 1970.

Hi there, Thanks for the interesting discussion! And the tip on using GB to search for phrasing in this sort of instance. I'll deploy that in future. I think the "sound alternative" suggestion from Noetica (hello) is entirely correct. It gives White the posthumous recognition rather than the book. It's a shame it didn't win - brilliant novel. Problem with your custom signature[edit]

You have a custom signature set in your account preferences. A change to Wikipedia's software has made your current custom signature incompatible with the software.

The problem: Your preferences are set to interpret your custom signature as wikitext. However, your current custom signature does not contain any wikitext.

The solutions: You can reset your signature to the default, or you can fix your signature.

Solution 1: Reset your signature to the default:
  1. Find the signature section in the first tab of Special:Preferences.
  2. Uncheck the box (☑︎→☐) that says "Treat the above as wiki markup."
  3. Remove anything in the Signature: text box. (It might already be empty.)
  4. Click the blue "Save" button at the bottom of the page. (The red "Restore all default settings" button will reset all of your preference settings, not just the signature.)
Solution 2: Fix your custom signature:
  1. Find the signature section in the first tab of Special:Preferences.
  2. Uncheck the box (☑︎→☐) that says "Treat the above as wiki markup."
  3. Click the blue "Save" button at the bottom of the page.
