Cramps photo

I see you've replaced my old (27-year-old!) photo of the Cramps with a photo from flikr. Sad to see my photo gone, but my photo was always just... okay. Better than what was there before IMHO (with Lux Interior looking very old), but the new photo you put up is pretty damn excellent! Keep up the good work! I am terribly sorry for the late response. I was (and actually still am) swamped due to ongoing projects and real life obligations, and it's been quite hard me for in the last couple of days to handle on-wiki stuff.

I'd be more than happy to help you whenever I can. If you have a specific question regarding editing, please do not hesitate to ask.

As for the Hungarian photographer, I strongly recommend that you contact commons:User:Grin for this as he is an admin on Commons and Hungarian is his native language. I am from Turkey, and hence do not speak Hungarian as it is the language spoken in Hungary. I could contact her and tell about the details of the license in English, but since you already mentioned that her English is not so good, it would be pointless, and Grin will be able to handle this much more easily than I do.

You, too, seem to be confused with about this "non-commercial" requirement. The reason for that is simply this: "Non-commercial" restrictions prevent us from including such works in any DVDs or published versions of Wikipedia which may come out in the future, so in order to keep the content "free" (as it is the only aspect that matters), we are avoiding such restrictions. We will of course not get rich by using a particular work, for which we acquire permission via OTRS, but this is common misperception, and apparently people think otherwise. Grin can explain it to her quite clearly.

I wish I had time to help you out with the sorting of the discography, but as I said, I have a lot going on right now, and I will be deprived of such fun stuff at least for a couple of months.

A quick tip as the final word: Bookmark this page, which you can refer to in the future in case you need someone who speaks a particular language. The people listed on the table are all Commons admins (meaning: they know a lot about copyright issues)

Because Category:Rory Gallagher albums is already directly filed in Category:Blues-rock albums, we don't need each individual album to be individually categorized as blues-rock. Unfortunately I don't really know enough about him to be of much help otherwise; I was doing a systematic cleanup on the genre category, and am really not very familiar with him at all. HOW? I know nothing of Wikimedia Commons, although I've uploaded a couple hundred photos from other photographers for en.Wikipedia. But since someone used a "fair use" excuse for an image of the same chosen name, won't it be impossible to upload my photo again, no matter the name? I worked hard to take that photo, it was an underwater photo, the woman is near the bottom of the Sea, and it took hard work when I was a newbie photography student to catch that photo. Thanks I appreciate your (lengthy) message on my talk page and I don't want to come across as confrontational; I do not think we are actually in any conflict, as we both want Wikipedia to be as good as possible. Furthermore, I really don't think that any disagreement we do have is very contentious. Let me also say that I am consistently ignorant about a slew of guidelines and policies myself, as there are a neverending stream of them. Relevant guidelines include Wikipedia:Images (which does not mention crediting photographers in articles themselves), Wikipedia:Image use policy (which demands that proper attribution be given on the File page itself), and Wikipedia:Captions. The latter states (with emphasis added and irrelevant passages omitted):

"Here are some details people might want to know about the picture (all are linkable)...

• For photographs:

o Who took it? (Generally, this is only included in the caption if the photographer is notable)"

If you want me to be as thorough as you were about these two reverts, I can oblige:

Peter Buck

1. You inserted this metadata (that is, information about the photo itself) into the article: "Photo: Andrew D. Hurley"
2. You added two fields from the template that do not apply: Img_size = and Landscape =. Note that the latter has an HTML comment reading "Only for images smaller than 220px!"
3. You inserted arbitrary line breaks into the infobox. The size of a template can be decided in one of two ways: relatively and by the use of some objective measure. If the former is the case (e.g. if an infobox is 20% of the size of the screen), then inserting line breaks is not necessary. The browser will wrap the text in the infobox according to the size of my screen (and my browser window, what fonts I have installed, any custom style sheets I have, etc.) If the size of the infobox is some objective value (e.g. 23em, or 100px), then these line breaks will still be unnecessary, as the text will wrap within the infobox itself up to the size of the box (minus any padding or margins).
4. The links keyboards and bass are not inccorect per se, but the former is a redirect to keyboard instrument, so I simply piped the link to that article and the latter is ambiguous as there are many kinds of instrument called "bass" and so I decided to make that one unpiped to elucidate it for the reader.
5. Finally, I reinserted File:R.E.M. (65).JPG only because I didn't want the picture to go to waste. Clearly, your picture is superior and should remain in the infobox.

Mike Mills

1. See my above comments: 1, 2, and 5
2. I de-capitalized the word "composer" as it was the second term in a list. Note that the first term—"Musician"—is capitalized and the final term—"producer"—was not.
3. Your edit included information about Mike Mills' record label(s), which is great, but note that this is how you left it: Label = I.R.S. Records, —with a hanging comma and space. I fixed this matter by inserting Warner Bros. to add his other label and to fix the very minor formatting error of a hanging comma and space at the end of the line.

As you can see, I have a reasonable rationale for all of these changes, and none of them are very drastic. The biggest changes were your addition of the new photos and those are much appreciated.

If you thought that I was upset, there must have been some miscommunication; I was not angry at all. I noted (mentally) that you enhanced the quality of the articles with superior pictures and that your edits also introduced some slight problems related to formatting that were undesirable. Clearly, you were upset by what I said, so I have to apologize.

Keisuke Kuwata

Hi Leah! I wanted to ask for your help clarifying a source you recently added to the Keisuke Kuwata article, in this edit: [1]. Unfortunately, I cannot read Korean, so I had to make some guesses:

• I get that it's an article from the Overseas Koreans Times, and the Korean is a direct quote from that
• Where did the English come from? Was this your own personal translation?
• The claim this quote is supporting ends with "He has never explicitly stated that he is a Zainichi, as it is considered taboo to do so in Japan.", right? So everything after that is part of the quote?
• Did you intend for the entire quote to appear in the article, instead of in the "references" section?

After looking at the Korean-English quote and the ref, it seems like the quotations end up repeating the claims that the reference is intended to support, and might be better under the "References" section than in the main body of the article. Perhaps we could include a quotation of the most useful part of the English translation in the body of the article. But before crossing that bridge, it would be good to get some details and know who we should credit for the translation - and that's why I'm here :) Thanks! Joren (talk) 00:59, 25 January 2010 (UTC)

Ahh, ok! I think I must have been greatly confused by your diff and edit summary about adding references, and thought that you had added the source yourself! Sorry for my confusion. I have asked the user Tonsdon about it. Yes, I want to help maintain the Japanese articles... I've been studying Japanese for a few years, and while I'm not very good at it, I love to use translating as a means to learn more, so give me enough time and my dictionaries and I'll see what I can come up with! Definitely not level 3 though :D. I had a try with cleaning up/re-translating the history section of Ikimono-gakari earlier -- that section still has a ton of detail and not enough flow. At least I learned a bit about Japanese street music in the process!

As for pictures, I wish I were back in Japan so I could take some photos myself :) but alas, we must make do with whatever public domain/fair use stuff we can scrounge up. Where do you tend to get your photos from? I've been on Wiki for a couple years, but I'm really not familiar with contributing to the Commons at all... Hi Leah! I would have responded earlier, but we were off the power grid yesterday :O. I really wouldn't have the first idea about how to meaningfully contribute to British invasion articles, as I really have no knowledge on the subject! My area of interest is mainly Japan-related stuff, with a minor interest in Christianity articles, so I tend to focus on those more, but if I get really inspired and I see some awfully formatted article I'll go on a tangent :D. I'm not really worried about which articles have more traffic (maybe I should be, given the stuff that passes for research here sometimes) but I tend to zero in on the things I'm interested in. However, I'd be happy to help crop pictures and/or teach you how. Multiple programs will do this for you, including the free/open GIMP. If you're using a Windows computer, you can use the Paint program (Start Menu -> Accessories -> Paint) to crop images for you. Use the rectangular selection tool to select the part you want to keep, then go to Edit menu -> crop.

If you want to create a sandbox, just make a new link and add what you want the title to be after your username and a forward slash. E.g. User:Leahtwosaints/Sandbox User:Leahtwosaints/Sandbox2 User:Leahtwosaints/Call it whatever you want!. You'll see these as red links, but then you can click on them and create the page.

Of course, it is missing some information (e.g. years active), but there is nothing wrong with the way that you've edited it. As I've stated before, the credit for photos is to be given on the photos page and only notable photographers are to be mentioned in the captions, but I honestly don't care about this instance, so you can write whatever you want. Categories on Commons

As far as I know, categories are created on Commons in the same way as you do it on Wikipedia. That is, you create the category page by adding the category page to a parent category. For instance, if you wanted to start Category:John Lennon you would click on the red link to start a new page (well alright, yes, I know it's really blue, but it would be red if you were just starting this category - this is just an example). In the edit box type [[category:Beatles]] and save. That's it, done. You have created category:John Lennon as a sub-category of category:Beatles. See Commons:Commons:Categories#Creating a new category for more information. SpinningSpark 20:18, 21 February 2010 (UTC)

There's really no more to it than I said above. Just create the category page for the sub-category you want. You do not need to add anything to the main category page to create a sub-category. This will happen automatically when you add a category to your new page. To put it another way, all category pages must themselves be in a category. Read the Beatles example I gave above and try to follow it for the category you want to create and then you'll see. SpinningSpark 00:53, 22 February 2010 (UTC)

As I said, it's not working. Click the last photo for Martin Barre, go to the Jethro Tull Category, click edit, and see if YOU can figure out how to get anything in there as a subcategory. I'm just lost. I'll keep piling up unusable photos there to anyone but myself, I suppose, since the Admins there love to brag and offer help here for Commons but they never come through, except to refuse some uploads because they look TOO professional, or whatever. Nobody really explains anything I can grasp there. My ADD might be partially to blame, but now I understand why nearly nobody here wants to mess with Commons. Even User:Tvoz- who has a lot more experience has no idea what ORTIS means! Oh well, sometimes, I just can't get over the fact that I'm not as bright as the average bear. Obviously, not your problem. You are trying to do it the wrong way round. You do not add Martin Barre as a subcategory on the Jethro Tull category page. What you do is create a Category:Martin Barre page. You add to the Category:Martin Barre page the category Category:Jethro Tull. The sub-category is created on the Jethro Tull category page by software magic, you don't need to do anything. Kim and Kelley's photos

Apart from where they stand and what they do during shows, Kim and Kelley can nowadays be told apart as follows: 1) Kelley has paid more attention to makeup and hair over the years, and her face has aged much better than Kim. 2) Kim had a plant poisoning accident sometime in the 2000s, and had to use prednisone, which contributed to her putting on more weight. Irish blues music groups

New categories First off, if you are interested in creating a new category or recategorizing existing articles or categories, you are free to do as much any time. Before you do, you may want to read up on WP:CAT, of course. The problem with your proposal is that it might conflict with WP:OC#SMALL. The amount of Irish blues music groups may be too small to justify a category. Based on the examples you gave—Rory Gallagher, Thin Lizzy, Van Morrison, and Nine Below Zero—I don't see enough of a justification for this category; there are only four members and two of them are solo musicians rather than musical groups (cf. Category:British blues musicians.) So far, all you have is two groups for Category:Irish blues music groups and two performers for Category:Irish blues musicians.

If you still want to make this categorization scheme, it is totally legitimate and you are free to do, but you have to do one of two things: either find more artists to populate your categories (there isn't a strict limit, but I'd imagine that six or so should be sufficient) or you can go about creating a more extensive categorization scheme for these groups based on nationality. Notice that Category:Blues musicians by nationality has no articles in it, only subcategories for Americans, Australians, Britons, Canadians, and Serbians (as well as some categories by instrument.) If you look at Category:Blues musical groups there is no subcategory of Category:Blues musical groups by nationality, but there are American, British, and Canadian subcategories as well as Category:Blues-rock groups. If you want, you can categorize the following articles: Chain (band) (Australian), Cuby & the Blizzards (Dutch), Kamchatka (band) (Swedish), The Matadors (Czechoslovakian), The Vans Brothers (New Zealand), and The Windy City Strugglers (New Zealand) and create Category:Blues musical groups by nationality yourself. Either solution is a perfectly fine one and both are desirable.

Also, if you would like to make a link to a category, it should be in the form [[:Category:X]] rather than [[Category:X]]. The former (which includes a colon before the word "Category") will create a link and the latter will add the existing page to a category. You inadvertently added my talk page to the (non-existant) Category:British blues groups. It's a common mistake. German Wikipedia (de:WP for short)

• Infoboxes for individual musicians are currently not used in de:WP. I have seen a discussion somewhere where someone opposed creating one. You simply add the photo with a caption, see e.g. de:Jimi Hendrix.
• There is an infobox template for bands, though, see it in use e.g. on de:Magma (Band). General wiki syntax in English works, but the use of German translations for various things like "Category:", translated to "Kategorie:" (if the translations have been implemented there which is often the case) is encouraged for the sake of users with low or no knowledge of English. Familiar en:WP templates, like e.g. {{Reflist}} do of course not exist automatically in de:WP.

Creating album articles

{{Infobox album}} is useful, you can find a lot of info how to do it on WP:WikiProject Albums, including formatting guidelines. For a few examples of album articles, see e.g. Category:Magma albums members, for many examples, see Category:Miles Davis albums. For an example of a simple one (created by me lately), see Tropic Appetites. For information about personnel, track titles and such for most albums, I recommend Allmusic and Discogs - sometimes amazon can be useful, too.

If I remember correctly, I created my first album article here by copying another one and then removing / changing everything I didn't need in it in the editing window. BNutzer (talk) 18:44, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

Rory Gallagher

Yeah, he (or Taste, to be precise, it was that band who played on Rockpalast) were really popular over here back then. My musical interests developed elsewhere (after Live Taste IIRC) back then, though.

For which album would you like to create an article? I noticed Live Taste doesn't exist yet ... could be a good one to start with - quite some text could be copied from another Taste album article, I assume. BNutzer (talk) 18:57, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

Creating Live Taste

Let's discuss this project here on your talk page, so please post your replies here. I will be somewhat busy in real life over the Easter holidays, so bear with me if my replies will be delayed.

• Click on "edit this page" in On the Boards (album), copy everything that's in there and paste it into User:Leahtwosaints/Sandbox/Live Taste to be able to work on it there without yet publishing it in the article space, then edit that one to change the details that you want to change.
  • Use <nowiki>before and </nowiki>after stuff like blocks of [[Category:something]] and interwiki links until you move the article out of your personal space as described below. Without that, your draft would be listed in the categories.
• See Wikipedia:WikiProject Albums to find out how to do some things (hint: "type" parameter in the infobox;), e.g. find and upload cover image ...
• Check Allmusic for an article about the album for details. Use google searches like taste "live taste" review or taste "live taste" to find more information.
• Add more sections to the article if wanted
• Add references (see here for a suggestion how to do it) and add external links if wanted.
• Once you consider it worth publishing: Remove <nowiki>...</nowiki> tags if you used them. Click on "move" and move User:Leahtwosaints/Sandbox/Live Taste to Live Taste.
• Put {{album}} onto Talk:Live Taste.
