Marbeh Raglaim

When I saw your user name in all lower case, it made no sense whatsoever at first, but after staring at it for a few seconds it "jumped" out at me. Not only did it jump out at me, but the exact source for it popped into my brain instantaneously. Is this a rather unusual physical attribute of yours or is there a story behind this? I have a phobia of centipedes. When I started using AOL back in 1996, I had to choose a screen name. I tried to choose chilopod, which means an animal from the class Chilopoda, comprising the centipedes. But someone had taken the name already. Since I didn't want to put a number into my name, I instead changed the spelling: from then on, my main Internet screen name was kylopod.

Eventually, I decided to make a second screen name for specifically Jewish discussions. I looked up "centipede" in a Hebrew dictionary, and it translated the word as marbeh raglaim. (The more common Israeli word is nadal.) Literally "numerous feet," the phrase is found in the Bible when referring to bugs in general. marbeh raglaim 12:25, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the link. I personally have always spelled it with a hyphen, though I have no problem with those people who spell it the other way. The original German word almost certainly did not have a hyphen, and the practice of spelling it non-hyphenated in English goes back a long way. I suspect that the ideological argument for avoiding making the "Semite" part seem distinct is a retroactive explanation. Like the term "Asian-American," "antisemite" has a certain PC flavor today but was once neutral. marbeh raglaim 22:49, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

Roald Dahl antisemitism section

Forgive me, I am somewhat new to aforementioned discussion but I had several questions for you. I am not some overzealous defender of Dahl's character, however, I feel antisemitism is a serious charge to make without strong proof:

1) someone made the claim that according to at least two biographers Dahl said so and so (i forget). The allegation is sourced to an online article, but unfortunately is not supported by the source.

2) In the discussion of the article you mentioned you would try to find the original independent article supporting foxman's claim of anti-semitic statements, I was wondering if you had come across that.

I agree there is a difference. But if you think statements like "There's a trait in the Jewish character that tends to provoke animosity" or "Even a stinker like Hitler didn't pick on them for no reason" or "That's when we all started hating Jews" are anti-Israel and not anti-Semitic, then you have apparently come to the wrong place. As a self-proclaimed "orthodox Jew" and clearly an activist in this capacity, don't you think you should recuse yourself from commenting on the allegedly anti-semitic comments made by non-Jews? The Onion Girl

Thanks for your question on my talk page. I admit I didn't think too much before adding the 'unreferenced' template to this article; on closer examination, I may have made a slight mistake there. But there are really two different issues involved.

The first issue is that the article doesn't contain anything that appears to be a reference or source - and all articles need some sources or references, as this is what the Verifiability policy is all about. The obvious assumption is that the source is the book itself - but that's not much use here, because the only information you've provided about it is the title and the author. For it to serve as a reference, you'd have to provide some kind of information that would allow a reader to find it easily - e.g. an ISBN, publisher, website link, etc. 'Book X by Y' isn't enough if the reader doesn't know where to start looking.

The second issue is more subtle. Even if the book itself was fully referenced, the article still wouldn't entirely comply with Wikipedia's guidelines on writing about fiction, as I understand them. This is because it would contain only primary sources (references to the subject of the article itself). Almost all articles should also contain some kind of secondary source (references independent of the immediate subject matter). This is explained at WP:PSTS, and is a subset of the 'no original research' policy - we're supposed to generally write articles based on what secondary sources have said about the subject, not write directly about the subject itself.

This is made clear at WP:NOT#PLOT: "Coverage of a work of fiction and elements of such works should not solely be a plot summary, but instead should include the real world context of the work (such as its development, legacy, critical reception, and any sourced literary analysis) alongside a reasonably concise description of the work's plot, characters and setting. Articles on fictional works containing little more than a plot summary should be improved to provide more balanced coverage that includes real-world context."

Finally, I should just caution that this isn't really my area of expertise - I don't usually participate in writing about fiction myself, so I might not be entirely correct about these policies (though I think I'm broadly right). In any case, I won't make any further edits to the article myself. If you want additional feedback, I suggest asking for help at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style (writing about fiction). Actually, on further inspection, I did make a mistake: according to WP:CITE, the name, author and date of publication of a work is usually enough for a reference. This means the first issue above isn't a problem, and I shouldn't have added the template. The second issue still applies, though. I'll remove the 'unreferenced' template, but I suggest that you should try to expand the article to include some secondary rather than primary material. Robofish (talk) 22:46, 22 June 2009 (UTC)

I was just reading some of the controversy surrounding the Roald Dahl article you've been involved with. One thing you might want to do which would be an appropriate method of preserving the quote from later in his life ("I'm certainly anti-Israeli [....]") would be to edit it into Wikiquote [[2]]. I checked there and the first quote (the Hitler one) is, in fact, already there, but the other one could be added as long as it is sourced well (Wikiquote doesn't [usually] allow unsourced or poorly sourced quotes anymore). Hello Marbehraglaim we need you to opine on the talk page of Led Zeppelin. The sources claim that Led Zeppelin is a hard rock band, but not the parents of the same. The history says the parents of hard rock are Jimi Hendrix, Cream, Jeff Beck. The same sources call Led Zeppelin one of the fathers of heavy metal. There is a POV about it that was imposed without consensus. The first paragraph stable as we knew it was amended by a partial view. Reliable and reputable sources are removed and an editor imposes his POV that Led Zeppelin is the progenitor of hard rock. How Led Zeppelin may be the parent hard rock if it existed before them? LZ is the progenitor of metal, not hard rock. Your opinion would be welcome. Have a nice day! Paulotanner (talk) 03:28, 28 January 2010 (UTC)

What I can offer you is a little research: Go to Google News, go to the archive search, and if you look at references to Zep between 1970 and 1980, you find almost an equal number of articles calling them "heavy metal" as you do calling them "hard rock." The term "heavy metal" only arose in the early 1970s and took some time to catch on in the press. While Zep never referred to themselves as heavy metal (though they did include the phrase in their song "Trampled Underfoot"), they were probably the group most often associated with the term during the 1970s. I did a Google News search of the words "heavy metal" and "music" between 1972 and 1978, and on the first page, 5 of the 10 articles referenced Zeppelin. marbeh raglaim (talk) 15:54, 28 January 2010 (UTC)
