The problem with pictures like these is that they are copyright and are only intended to show the character, not the actor. With the actor, freer images are available to show their likeness and can easily be obtained. With Wikipedia being as free as possible, images such as these should not be used on actors pages. They can still be used on the characters page. (Quentin X 18:34, 24 February 2007 (UTC))[reply]

  • Didn't realize it, but the picture is still in fact on the Elliot Stabler page. I suppose images like the actor's publicity photos should be used here, right? -Mike Payne 18:38, 24 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    • Publicity photos have the same copyright. The idea is to get completely free images, i.e. the actor walking down the street etc. I know that it sound a bit ludicrous but it can be done. See Brad Pitt for an example. The Elliot Stabler page can remain the same as it concerns the character. (Quentin X 19:30, 24 February 2007 (UTC))[reply]
      • But aren't the actor's personal publicity photos meant for this kind of thing? If they aren't for promoting the actor and making them more well known by educating people about them, then what are they for? Also, other pictures, such as the picture on the Brad Pitt page that you mentioned, what makes these free and the publicity photos not? -Mike Payne 00:04, 25 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
        • It boils down to control - Wikipedia wants images that are freely available to anybody, whereas most publicity photos are still owned by somebody who wants to retain control. Of course Wikipedia makes exceptions where there is no free alternative available (somebody's dead, for example, or to depict a character rather than an actor), but in the case of a living celebrity that's not a realistic argument - theoretically, you could attend a film festival or award ceremony and take a pic. That appears to be the case for the Brad Pitt photo, for example. CovenantD 15:35, 25 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
          • So does anyone know if there is a picture that is free and similar to the one used on the Ricky Gervais page for Meloni? -Mike Payne 04:01, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
          • sigh so now the picture is gone from the Ricky Gervais page... I suppose all images have to be worthless off the cuff photos on wikipedia... -Mike Payne 11:20, 4 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Reversions[edit]

You asked what I use to revert pages. See WP:TWINKLE. If that doesn't help, come to me for more information. --RazorICE 08:38, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Did you watch my talk page so you would see responses to this, or will anything I write as a reply on my own talk page kind of disappear into the void? -Mike Payne 08:58, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    • I watch all my edits :P --RazorICE 09:00, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
      • Still kind of a newb on how policies are run here. I can do pretty well at reading articles and dissecting them to find out what code does what, but still learning. :) -Mike Payne 09:02, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
        • Yeah, I've been around a while but only started really helping out today, actually. Welcome to Wikipedia, by the way. :) --RazorICE 09:06, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
          • Same here. I've been reading forever but only started editing like 3 days ago. :) Gives me some way to bestow my insanely great knowledge with the people, and then someone can revert it! :P --Mike Payne 09:09, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
            • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/username to see a user's contributions. And yeah, it's getting addicting (I'm supposed to be doing school work, but I've been reverting vandalism for the last few hours...) --RazorICE 09:13, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
              • But is there a link from the person's user page or anywhere or do you have to manually type the URL? Isn't there a contributions link or something on the user page? --Mike Payne 09:15, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
                • Toolbox on the left side of the page. User Contributions. =) --RazorICE 09:18, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
                  • Outstanding... Thanks! :) --Mike Payne 09:20, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The article salary has the primary sources that make mention of salt being used for money. Codex Sinaiticus (Talk) 16:38, 23 February 2007 (UTC) [reply]

Please stop adding the Batman actors category to the article. That category was deleted more than once by consensus and prevented from recreation. I stated as much in my edit summaries, if you didn't notice, since apparently you haven't gone to the Category page itself and read the notice there. CovenantD 04:40, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Still don't see how that makes sense since he is a Batman actor, but OK... -Mike Payne
    • It's a really good idea to check edit summaries and the actual articles/categories when reverting their deletion to ensure that they still exist - unfortunately, they don't always show as a redlink. The Batman actors category was deleted because it was becoming a catch-all for every guest-star and voice actor ever associated with a Batman series, film or cartoon, not just those who actually portrayed the character himself. (Betty White and Tallulah Bankhead are the two that really stick in my mind.) A list that allows for annotation was created instead. CovenantD 05:01, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
      • Your edit summary said something deleted/salted category, and I don't know what "salted" even means. Sorry. :) -Mike Payne 05:09, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Note: I like to keep discussions together, so I've replied to your latest question on my talk page. CovenantD 17:54, 24 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

User Pages[edit]

Hehe, I like being asked about things! :D
Personally, I used my user pages for preparing articles that I think may (but probably will not) be added to Wikipedia someday, as well as a Template I made earlier today for helping with warning vandals.
You can make them by going to a page such as this and clicking on create article. --RazorICEtalk 07:47, 27 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • So is this where you would keep your signature save to make it easy to copy it so you can paste and add it, or is there another way to configure a signature for dash tilde tilde tilde tilde? -Mike Payne 07:50, 27 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Signature can be edited through your preferences. Just change the contents of "Signature" to wiki-markup and check Raw signature. --RazorICEtalk 08:00, 27 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • And since we're on the subject, how do you create and use templates? I'm full of questions today. :) -Mike Payne 07:53, 27 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Templates are the same as user pages, just make it by going to something like this and creating the page. You can then use it by typing {{User:Mike_Payne/Template:myUserPage}}, or you can use {{subst:Mike_Payne/Template:myUserPage}} (read up on subst for the difference between them). Hope this helps. --RazorICEtalk 08:00, 27 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your question on my talk page[edit]

Glad you were able to figure it out. Feel free to ask questions at any time. CovenantD 05:00, 5 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Finding out your edit count[edit]

You can find your edit count here. I love answering questions. :P --RazorICE 07:08, 5 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I hope you're not being sarcastic and you really do love answering questions, because I'm bound to have a ton of them. :) -Mike Payne 08:06, 5 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    • Hehe, no I really do like answering questions :P so if you have any more feel free to ask! :D --RazorICE 09:24, 5 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
      • By the way I like the new sig a lot better than the last one, not that it was bad but the new one rules. -Mike Payne 14:55, 5 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm aware of your argument, and I've addressed it on the talk page. It doesn't matter that Connery's intent was not to get Final Jeopardy right for the purpose of winning the game. If there exists a correct answer (or multiple correct answers) and Connery provides it, then he has gotten the question right. For instance, one of the FJ questions is some variation on "make some kind of mark". Connery makes a mark, so he has fulfilled the requirement for correctness. Croctotheface 06:43, 15 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Whatever, tomato tomahto. :) I won't change it again. -Mike Payne 06:44, 15 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I take most things I work on pretty seriously, maybe too much so. If you're good, I'm good, and I appreciate that you looked to talk it out rather than just edit war. It's admittedly a minor distinction, but better to get even the minor stuff right.  :) Take care. Croctotheface 07:09, 15 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Templates[edit]

Hey mike, I think you're talking about the vandalism message, "Welcome to Wikipedia. We invite everyone to contribute constructively...", right? You can produce that and others using warning templates, which you can find at WP:UTTM. I use {{uw-vandalism1}} for the first offense, {{uw-vandalism2}} for the second that day, and so on up to 4, after which you can report them at WP:AIV to have them blocked. If you want to become a super vandalwhacker, you'll need some of the tools, such as WP:TWINKLE. I <3 twinkle! It lets you revert and warn with 2 clicks of a button. :)

By the way, I took the liberty of altering your email address on this page so that bots that crawl the internet won't find it as easily and send you mountains of spam. I'd recommend taking that off entirely and enabling the email function in "preferences" (i.e. setting up an email account) so people can email you using the function Special:emailuser/Mike Payne. An advantage of that is you get to decide who does and does not know your email address! Anyway, I'm always glad to help, dop me a line if you need anything or if I didn't answer your question adequately. Peace, delldot talk 13:42, 15 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • How do those addons even work? How can you even use one to alter the way a web page looks? And thanks for changing the email. :) -Mike Payne 20:21, 15 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Just so you know, the "Twinkle" that delldot referred to is the same that I told you about a long time ago (see here). They work by injecting a javascript code before you load the page (much like Greasemonkey for Firefox). Another useful tool I recommend you get when you have more than 500 (I think?) edits is VandalProof. --RazorICE 08:00, 19 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

RE: the note on my talk page, I realize you didn't intend it as advertising, but that's how it comes across, since it's a page from a commercial site whose only purpose is to sell shirts. External links are meant to give readers sources of more information on the subject, and a shirt doesn't really tell our readers much of anything, the way I see it. I hope that clears up why I removed it. Errick 00:25, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Archiving[edit]

Hey Mike, I do my archiving manually by cutting and pasting the text into an empty archive (e.g. next time I archive, I'll cut the text from User talk:delldot and paste it into User talk:delldot/Archive 5). Then I add the link to the new archive into the talk page header. However, there is a bot that you can get to do it, Werdnabot, but I've never used it and don't really know how it works (I think you put some script on the page to get the bot's "attention"). You'd probably have to ask Werdna or someone else who uses the bot. I would think archiving your own talk page with a bot would be annoying because you'd get the orange "you have new messages" box every time the bot archived something. Anyway, archiving talk pages is explained at Wikipedia:How to archive a talk page, which explains a few different ways of doing it. Definitely keep those questions coming, I'm always glad to help. Peace, delldot talk 22:19, 19 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Revert of Will Ferrell page[edit]

You recently reverted my edits to Will Ferrell. I edited out the mention of Chazz Michael Michaels in the Noteable Roles section. As you may notice, before that very same section is a comment stating:

"EDITORS: Before adding or deleting anything from the Notable Role section, please see and contribute to the topic about it in the Discussion page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Will_Ferrell#Noteable_Roles)"

This comment was put there, as well as an accomponying discussion topic on the discussion page because there have been a great deal of edits, unnecessary reverts, and editing wars centered around that section. So, the section stood as it was since a general concensus had been reached on the discussion page. Therefore, citing a lack of any mention of Chazz Michael Michaels on that discussion page, I deleted it as well as making the comment referencing the discussion a bit more succinct and noticeable. If you think that his role in Blades of Glory is indeed "Notable" then please bring it up in the discussion page. In the interim, my argument against adding it would be that a new role does not necessarily equate to a notable role. If it did then we would have to add a role for every new movie Ferrell is in. Furthermore, the film just came out today, which hardly makes the film historically or encyclopedically notable (yet).

So, if you like please discuss the topic in the discussion page. Until then I will re-revert my own edits. Thank you for your edits, and keep up the good work!

Archiving with Shadowbot3[edit]

From User:Werdnabot/Archiver/Howto:

To set up your User talk page for automatic archival by Werdnabot, you need to add, to the top of your user talk page, the following code: {{User:Werdnabot/Archiver/Template

 |age = 7
 |target = ./Archive {{CURRENTMONTHABBREV}} {{CURRENTYEAR}}
 |dounreplied = yes

}}

where:

  • (age) is the number of days a section must have no signed comments before it becomes eligible for archival.
  • (target) is the fully-qualified name of the page to archive to. For example, my user talk page archives to User talk:Werdna648/Archive/Archive 03, and I specify this as the parameter. {{CURRENTMONTHABBREV}} expands to the same abbreviation that it would expand to in wikitext, i.e. Apr. Must be a subpage of current page unless listed at User:Werdnabot/Subpage Exceptions
  • (dounreplied), if set to yes, tells Werdnabot to archive sections with one or more signed comments, as different from the default behaviour of only archiving sections with two or more signed comments.

Hope this helps! --RazorICE 13:37, 10 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there[edit]

I just wanted to let you know that Dane Cook: Vicious Circle has been updated and reformed, with a talk page now included. Have a good day, sir.

Thanks for uploading Image:Vicious_circle.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the copyright status of the image on the image's description page, using an appropriate copyright tag, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided copyright information for them as well.

Mike, I've removed the tag as you've added a second link to an established Wikipedia page. However, if I may suggest, creating the link to a non-existent page Shameless (HBO special) isn't advised. Regards. Netkinetic(t/c/@) 16:09, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps leaving it out of the disambiguation page at this time, until someone with an interest in that subject and information relating to it creates an article. Regards. Netkinetic(t/c/@) 16:15, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Good idea! :) Netkinetic(t/c/@) 16:24, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm unsure how to link with Wikitickonary, however I would like to request that you do not edit my personal talk page. The strikeout was there for a reason! Netkinetic(t/c/@) 18:20, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

...Nice...[edit]

I like the changes you made to the Dane Cook Page. Very professional. I might add that I just created a page myself: The General, a song by Dispatch.
