PS: I undid your changes to Grace Hopper, though I know they were well-intentioned. First, we don't add academic postnomials to people's names. That's covered in WP:MOSBIO#Academic titles. Second, Wikipedia splits the difference when it comes to using Commonwealth orthography versus American orthography. If a subjject is mostly American-related (such as a bio of an American) then American spellings are used ("honor"). If the subject is a Commonwealth-related then those spellings are used ("honour"). In cases where there's no clear association to either culture, the spelling conventions that were first used inthe article are maintained. See WP:MOS#National varieties of English. I know this is unlike the styles used in other publications, and many of us are tripped up by them. Anyway, I appreciate your good-faith efforts to improve the project. ·:· Will Beback ·:· 21:58, 28 June 2008 (UTC)

Image tagging for Image:CJCSflg2.gif[edit]

Changing the english spelling style[edit]

I noticed a couple articles in which you changed the spelling style away from the US style. Per WP:ENGVAR the style shouldn't have been changed as the style is both established already in the article and had strong national ties. Please be aware of this in the future. Thanks. Orphaned non-free media (Image:University of Tulsa College of Law sword & scales seal - colour - transparent.GIF)[edit]

Ambox warning blue.svg Thanks for uploading Image:University of Tulsa College of Law sword & scales seal - colour - transparent.GIF. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:31, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

Image copyright problem with Image:6th United States Army flag.gif[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:6th United States Army flag.gif. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. Even if you created the image yourself, you still need to release it so Wikipedia can use it. If you don't indicate the copyright status of the image on the image's description page, using an appropriate copyright tag, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you made this image yourself, you can use copyright tags like {{PD-self}} (to release all rights), {{self|CC-by-sa-3.0|GFDL}} (to require that you be credited), or any tag here - just go to the image, click edit, and add one of those. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided copyright information for them as well.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by STBotI. For assistance on the image use policy, see Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. STBotI (talk) 14:20, 1 September 2008 (UTC)

Hello. Documenting straight facts from the episodes is okay (so long as it doesn't get too bogged down in minutiae), but putting forward your own opinions of "homages" and "quasi-anachronistic associations" is inappropriate. You'll notice that other such references are clearly sourced to a journalist or interview or other source that's already made the parallel - it's Wikipedia's job to document from these sources, not to draw our own. --McGeddon (talk) 23:05, 15 October 2008 (UTC)

Original research issues[edit]

Feel free leave a message on my talk page (or on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Life on Mars) if you want to discuss your approach to editing, the effect it's having on other users, and the seriousness of the vandalism warnings. It's clear that you and Jack are at odds about the tone of some of your recent edits, but it'd be a shame to lose such a constructive editor, and I'm sure a useful compromise can be reached. --McGeddon (talk) 09:23, 18 October 2008 (UTC)

We are not at odds, I do not know the editor. But like it or not, unreferenced/OR will not enter these articles. Police,Mad,Jack (talk · contribs) 09:25, 18 October 2008 (UTC)

This seems like a fundamental misconception about how Wikipedia articles are constructed. Unreferenced additions can become referenced rather than deleted, and original research can sometimes be edited into a more encyclopaedic tone. --McGeddon (talk) 09:38, 18 October 2008 (UTC)

Episode 2 (Ashes to Ashes)[edit]

Hello. You have restored the article Episode 2 (Ashes to Ashes) with copyright infringment and without establishing WP:NOTABILITY. For episode articles, notability is best established with awards, production information and reception, all of them sourced to reliable sources, preferably third-party sources like newspaper reviews and interviews (imdb and tv.com are not reliable). You can see many good episode articles at WP:Good Articles#Television_episodes for inspiration. I have therefore redirected the article again. Feel free to ask me if you want more advice. – sgeureka tc 07:02, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

Information.svg Please do not add content without citing reliable sources, as you did to List of Ashes to Ashes characters. Before making potentially controversial edits, it is recommended that you discuss them first on the article's talk page. If you are familiar with Wikipedia:Citing sources please take this opportunity to add references to the article. Thank you. Just because you put the words that have passed between characters in the references, it does not constitute as a reference. I have asked if you would like to learn about references several times, and directed you to the page which explains about them - you seem to not be interested. Police,Mad,Jack (talk · contribs) 15:25, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

Primary sources are valid references for uncontroversial edits that don't attempt to interpret those sources. "For example, an article about a novel may cite passages from the novel to describe the plot, but any interpretation of those passages needs a secondary source." --McGeddon (talk) 09:01, 15 May 2009 (UTC)

Police Mad Jack reverts[edit]

Sorry to see you're having trouble with another editor. Yes, Jack sometimes acts incorrectly when he deletes content as "pure WP:OR" or "unreferenced" - heavy use of primary sources is, per WP:PRIMARY, only original research if you're giving an interpretation of them. Flatly reporting an uncontroversial detail from a particular episode is fine.

However, you should be careful not to draw any conclusions from episode content, particularly small details; you edited List of Ashes to Ashes characters to say that SuperMac was "Past Master of his Masonic lodge", apparently on the basis of a costume detail. It would be more appropriate to state that "his badge and collar suggested that" - this is both truer to the source (which may have been a non-canonical costuming error, or a setup for a twist later in the series), and is closer to WP:INUNIVERSE (the policy that says we should write about fictional characters as if they were fictional characters, rather than in an in-universe style).

If you're looking for a good direction to put your enthusiasm, it'd be helpful if the Life on Mars articles could focus more on secondary sources; how critics have described the characters, what the writers have said about them in interviews, what the actors themselves think. You might like to get involved with WikiProject Life on Mars, and I'm sure their talk page would be a useful place to discuss any future conflicts you have with other editors, regarding Life on Mars related articles.

Don't be afraid to drop Jack a line himself, though. Explaining how you both think that you're acting to improve the article can be a good way to defuse an edit war. --McGeddon (talk) 08:58, 15 May 2009 (UTC)

Per McGeddon's talk: I was not vandalising at all. Please read Wikipedia:Vandalism. Do not accuse other editors as vandals, it is very bad faith, no need for it. As McGeddon has stated, please do not hesitiate to contact me on my talk. I only ever reverted your edits because they contained blatant WP:OR. your 140 MI BN posting.[edit]

Dear Mr. Miley,

I read your posting and would like to know where your source is for the tearing down and rebuilding of the WWII buidings. The reason for my request, I was stationed at the 140th during that time period and worked in the old buildings in conjunction to the new Patton Reserve Center during the tear down/re-construction. Your article is the only statement that I have seen thus far verifing these accounts. I need to gather further sources that cite the tear down and reconstruction of such buildings at that post during the year of 1989 to 1992.

Many thanks,

just_the_facts8 —Preceding unsigned comment added by Just the facts8 (talkcontribs) 16:09, 18 May 2009 (UTC)

Personal observation. I was AGR (i.e., active duty) there from September 1988 until September 1991. The old, abandoned shoppette and mess hall were torn down early in Fiscal Year 1989 (i.e., 4th quarter of calendar year 1988 or 1st quarter of calendar year 1989). The general contractor set up their construction office on the site of the shoppette, and proceeded to build the foundations for the new administrative building on the site of & surrounding the old mess hall. About that same time, they started the foundation work for the new motor pool. The old admin building/warehouse and the old motor pool remained standing until we could move into the new motor pool and admin building about two years later. I think the new motor pool was finished a little bit before the new admin building, but I cannot say that for certain. We were still in the old admin building when Operation Desert Shield started in August 1990 but we were in the new one before the Desert Storm air campaign began. We used a portion of a GSA warehouse when the old one was razed; unfortunately, we didn't get a key to the GSA's back gate a block south of our back gate, so we had to drive a few blocks east, south to the GSA driveway, and back almost as far east as we started, every time we went to the warehouse.

Who are you, and to which company or HHS section were you assigned?

.

778 references on "List of Ashes to Ashes characters"[edit]

Pinpointing primary sources to the exact minute and second is only appropriate for occasional, important facts. There's no need to cite three or four different timestamps for something like ""Metal" Micky Dillon (Neal Barry)[168] is a burglar[169] with a metal plate in his head.[170] He has five children.[171]" - it just makes the article harder to read, and clogs up the references section. The current article is 133k long, which is way above the article size guidelines.

It's enough to say "Micky Dillon appears in episode X" in the body of the article. --McGeddon (talk) 10:34, 6 June 2009 (UTC)

Original research, again[edit]

"Alex Drake's suggestion to her father, Tim Price, that Evan can handle his case load for a few days demonstrates that, sometime between the passage of the Courts and Legal Services Act 1990 and her 2008 voyage back in time to 1981, White is granted right of audience as a solicitor adovocate." - please remember that drawing your own conclusions about the subject is original research and is inappropriate for an encyclopaedia. Please be careful to limit your edits to facts which have been clearly and unambiguously stated in television episodes, interviews or press coverage. --McGeddon (talk) 22:44, 15 June 2009 (UTC)

RE: Ray Carling and Gene Hunt[edit]

Hello MileyDavidA. This is simply a polite note to inform you that I have reverted your work on the above articles, and so that we can further discuss the matter here if need be. The reason for my revert is simple, the problem with it is, is that even though it is sourced it is still laced with original research because all the information you have observed during the programme and otherwise carried out using your own synthesis. Also, the dates you present are once again original research and also clutter up the infobox.
