Changes to Faramir Article[edit]

I posted my response in the talk page of the Faramir article, but I'll post it here again:

"Haha, now that you've pointed it out, maybe you're right, Ted87 :P. I admit I can carried away with my favorite characters *blushes*. I'll try to resist my temptation and cut it down a bit...or maybe a lot :P. —Mirlen 22:25, 23 March 2006 (UTC)"

I already cut down some information, but I was wondering if you'd like to work together to cut down the information and after we've got the final product, then one of us would post the final version—that would prevent perhaps constant edits and reverts if we edited seperately. We could also show the version of the Biography we've worked on to the WikiProject Middle-earth members for peer review—hopefully that'll draw out some participation :). So, what do you say? Oh btw, please respond on my talk page. Thanks :). —Mirlen 23:24, 23 March 2006 (UTC)

That sounds dope enough. Although I don't know how it's going to be posted for peer review, so you're going to have to help me out with that. I'll send my changes to you and you can make further edits/tell me watch you think. How do you want me to send you my version/post it? (whatever way is good for you, do the same when you send it to me). Ted87 02:44, 24 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
"I have one request on the Faramir page. Can we keep the Faramir/Eowyn picture? Pretty please? :) —Mirlen 02:43, 27 March 2006 (UTC)" I JUST edited this page and already you respond! You're quick. The picture could stay if you really want it. (I'm no wikipedia nazi) But you need to state where it's from from (along with the others) in the captioning. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Ted87 (talkcontribs) .
You know, you're probably right about the caption thing. Threw the pic back in. Not as much stuff needed to be taken out as I originaly thought. :| Here's something off topic that maybe you could answer me. How did Rohan know that they were going to be attacked by Saruman at that specific time? And how did Saruman know to attack Helm's Deep (or the Hornburg if that's what you want to call it)? Ted87 03:50, 27 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I see. Thanks for the info. BTW seeing how you love Faramir so much, what did you think of faramir in the movies? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Ted87 (talkcontribs) .
Well if you do decide to do that essay don't put the whole thing on my talk page :p Yeah, the writers were too obsessed with character arcs (Faramir, Aragorn, Theoden, Treebeard, Elrond) that they failed to show who some of these characters truely were. But what I was most surprised was how much meaner they made "filmamir." Faramir ranks a close second to Gimli on my list of changed charecters I disliked. Ted 05:12, 28 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
"Alas, poor Gimli. Poor Faramir. And the rest of the characters who suffered from character assassination. May they R.I.P. —Mirlen 05:15, 28 March 2006 (UTC)" ^^That was beautiful :'( Ted 05:31, 28 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Three things. First what does "G.A." stand for? (as in G.A. Standards) Second, I don't know how to get the Faramir article up to those standards (you mentioned this is the wikiproject Middle-earth) since I'm not an expert on him therefore the info is a little scattered for me. What do you think of the new Samwise Gamgee article? Do you think it is enough to remove from the list of articles needing expansion? Ted87 04:46, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the feedback. I read a discussion page on whether Middle-earth articles should be in past tense or not and I'm pretty sure it suppose to be past tense :/ I'll try to find the disccusion page before doing anything. Ted87 22:45, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with CBD although for some charecters (Frodo, Gandalf, etc.) it is necessary to give longer plots surronding them since they are central to it and because their exploits arn't centered around just one of the books. And no "thanks" necessary, but your welcome none-the-less. It's all about collaberation (it's a wiki!). We do it for the love of LOTR. Ted87 21:30, 1 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The reason I just logged right now was to sign the role call thing and I get this message! :o Thanks for finding the article. Peace. Ted87 21:57, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Its so... unugly! M o P 22:53, 24 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Aw, the posed one is so cute! I'm kicking myself for using the word cute in a sentence, but it can't be denied :( M o P 23:54, 24 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for pointing out that gallery! Aren't these two cute? :) Cheers, Sango123 (e) 01:56, 26 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #1[edit]

Reach out is a program aimed at allowing users to bring issues that they have had in Wikipedia to a listening, sympathetic and caring audience:
"No one can know how we feel if we do not say. We cannot expect to get understanding if we do not ask for it. No one will dispute that sometimes life's issues are too much for one person. It is fair to say that sometimes Wikipedia's problems fall under the same heading. This is a place where you can bring the bruises that can sometimes be got on this project for attention."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Note from the editor
Welcome to this new format of the Esperanza Newsletter, which came about during the last Advisory Council meeting - we hope you like it! The major changes are that each month, right after the Council meeting, this will be sent out and will include two featured programs and a sum up of the meeting. Also, it will be signed by all of the Advisory Council members, not just Celestianpower. Have an Esperanzial end of March, everyone!
  1. Future meetings are to be held monthly, not fortnightly as before.
  2. Bans and Access level changes (apart from autovoice) in the IRC channel are to be reported at the new log.
  3. In the IRC channel, there is going to be only one bot at a time.
  4. The charter requires members to have 150 edits and 2 weeks editing. Why this is the case will be clarified.
  5. A new Code of Conduct will be drafted by JoanneB and proposed to the Esperanza community.
  6. The NPA reform idea is to be dropped officially.
  7. Charter ammendments are to be discussed in future, not voted on.
  8. The Advisory Council is not going to be proposed to be expanded by the Advisory Council themselves, if others want to propose it, they will listen.
Signed...

RFA[edit]

You should've told me you were running but anyway...Yes, I wanted to say best of luck—I added my support for you! :) —Mirlen 02:52, 27 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Sort of happened fast. Always too much to do on this place. :] --CBDunkerson 03:08, 27 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Reunification[edit]

The userbox you said you wanted to use wasn't created by me; I got it off the Wikipedia:userbox page. Of course I have no problem of other people using the userbox (it wasn't created by me anyway). Deiaemeth 07:03, 27 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Monobook[edit]

Yeah, I think you are (slight change). Does it work? Sango123 (e) 05:04, 28 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yep. :) 'Night, Sango123 (e) 05:10, 28 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You need to click the Your signature with timestamp edit button instead of manually typing it in to make it work. And how's the status changer? :) By the way, I love your new layout! Sango123 (e) 15:54, 28 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The online-offline-busy status changer should appear either in a panel under 'toolbox' in your left sidebar or a few buttons in your upper right-hand toolbar. As for browsers, Firefox > IE. :D And yes, steal as much as you'd like (regarding layout and/or white chocolate). Sango123 (e) 23:54, 28 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No need to be polite; take the chocolate. :) As for your status changer, does it appear in either of these places? (Sorry, please disregard my skin.) Sango123 (e) 00:10, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Try purging now. And no, don't worry, you're not being bothersome at all! :) Sango123 (e) 03:47, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Fine then, here's some chocolate of your own. :P Sango123 (e) 03:49, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the lovely rose, Mirlen! If you ever need anything, I'll always be glad to help. 谢谢, Sango123 (e) 04:28, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

谢谢 means "thank you" in Simplified Chinese. Sango123 (e) 04:33, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

re your B'day greeting...[edit]

Hi, Thanks for your greeting. I would love a copy of your (secret?) cake recipe... cake mix I can make! -:) --hydkat 06:07, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

ME Wikiproject[edit]

My time available for wikipedia is a little erratic, but I definitely am big on Tolkein. If it's not too critical how much time I can devote to the project I'm fine with being added to the list. Thanks for the interest :o)

- ASchmoo 20:10, 31 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No, the only requirement is to be willing to help. There's several sub-projects, so you may find something you like there. If you do, just add yourself to the list. Titoxd(?!? - help us) 22:54, 31 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, thanks for signing on! On WP:WVWP, we've enjoyed contacting the WikiProjects, it's a great way to find out what's going on in all sorts of corners of Wikipedia, from astronomical objects to wrestling. It takes a lot of time to do properly, so we can use your help, but it's been very helpful IMHO. We probably need to do another "push" in April, but we need to discuss strategy first. Thanks again, and welcome, Walkerma 01:39, 2 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Maedhros[edit]

I have question. How are you having the whole date format? Does that mean that for the War of Wrath, the date should be tweaked to Y.S. instead of F.A. (First Age). —Mirlen 00:39, 1 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mirlen. The War of Wrath article actually already uses 'Years of the Sun'. The distinction I was drawing in the Maedhros article was that the 587th 'Year of the Sun' is not the same thing as the 587th 'Year of the First Age'. The First Age actually began with the Awakening of the Elves at Cuivienen (or, in some versions, even further back at the creation of Arda). The first ~600 'Years of the Sun' were actually a tiny fraction at the very end of the First Age. The view that the First Age began with the creation of the Sun and Moon is very common, but not consistent with the books. --CBDunkerson 01:02, 1 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Question[edit]

Sorry for pelting from time to time with so many questions :P, but I was wondering if you knew whether the correct spelling would be to refer the House of Fëanor members. Is it Fëanorion, Fëanorean, or Fëanorian? —Mirlen 20:41, 1 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No worries. Tolkien consistently used "Fëanorian". 'Fëanorean' seems more natural to me and I sometimes use it mistakenly, but the '-ian' form appears in the LotR appendices and several other places. --CBDunkerson 20:49, 1 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I don't really have a problem with it. It could be more concise, but I don't worry much about the stylistic issues. Only suggestion might be to cut down and/or merge the 'biography' sub-sections. Keep details about Faramir himself but reduce the information about what he did. Possibly move that info to The Two Towers to expand the chapter summaries there. That'd make one central location for plot rather than the same plot details appearing in Faramir, Frodo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee, Gollum, et cetera. --CBDunkerson 21:05, 1 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
See Appendix E.II.i, "The Fëanorian Letters" and "Gildor (Inglorion)" in the index. Thus, "Fëanorian" and "Inglorion" are both 'correct' in that they were used by Tolkien. The '-ian' ending is an anglicization (i.e. in English '-ian', '-ien', and '-an' are used to indicate 'of'). Theoretically, one or more of the sons of Fëanor could have been given a name something like 'Maedhros Fëanorion'... but there isn't any reference to such. --CBDunkerson 20:27, 2 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Middle-earth portal[edit]

Thanks for the welcome note! I still have a bit of looking around to do to familiarise myself with the project, portal, articles and categories, but it looks good. Just one quick question for now: is the talk page of the WikiProject the best place to discuss things if there is nowhere else obvious, and if discussing things on other talk pages, what is the best way to draw attention to them if no-one seems to notice? Thanks. Carcharoth 00:42, 2 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you[edit]

Thanks for your support in my RFA. The final vote count was (88/3/1), so I am now an administrator. Please let me know if at any stage you require assistance, or if you have comments on how I am doing as an administrator. Once again thank you and with kind regards Gryffindor 17:40, 2 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

RFA Thanks[edit]

Hi Mirlen! Thank you for your support vote on my RFA. The final result was a successful request based on 111 support and 1 oppose. I foresee many hours rearranging Tolkien pages and categories once we get a full plan worked out. :] --CBDunkerson 11:27, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My RfA[edit]

Hello Mirlen/Archive2: Thank you for supporting me in my RfA, which passed with a final tally of 77/3/0. I hope I can perform at the standards expected for administrators. If I make any mistakes, or you need anything, please let me know. Prodego talk 01:25, 4 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Attack, foxes![edit]

Was just wondering if you wanted to register an account under the name User:MirIen. It looks identical, yes, but the "l" is really a capital "I". Just to avoid any impersonators wreaking havoc. _-M o P-_ 00:56, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Looks identical under normal font, that is. >_<
Not forcing you to, but there was a puppetmaster exploiting people with lowercase "l"s and uppercase "I"s in their names. In response, some people created their own sockpuppets so nobody else could impersonate them. _-M o P-_ 01:31, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You're the one in the middle :D
Aww :( Its ok, liddle Mirwin. You can have this wolf cub. Take care! _-M o P-_ 01:39, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Gasp! I must fix up your talk page. I just realised you're running the color and text code directly in this page; if you want, I can migrate it into it's own template area, so that it encompasses everything on this page. Your call, of course. _-M o P-_ 01:40, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Update: I moved all of your talk page code and experimented a bit with it; you can find everything at User:Mirlen/Talktemplate. The colors are the same, with the exception of the title, and the border, which isn't as thick as before. You can change those if you wish, or I can do it for you. Have fun! _-M o P-_ 01:55, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

All righty, I've added in the archive header. However, I took out both other boxes (the "Welcome to my talk page" and archive box"); if you want one restored, feel free to ask. Also, you can put in a guidelines thingy if you want, too. _-M o P-_ 16:59, 8 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Any time! ^_^ _-M o P-_ 17:03, 8 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #2[edit]

The Barnstar Brigade is a new program aimed at giving more very deserving yet unappreciated users barnstars. It will officially start on 2006-04-09, but signing up is encouraged before this date:
"Here in Wikipedia, there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go un-appreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go un-noticed. Sadly, these editors often leave the project. As Esperanzians, we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. A project the size of Wikipedia has thousands of editors, so there are plenty of people out there who deserve recognition, one just has to find them. The object of this program is not to flood editors with Barnstars, but to seek out people who deserve them, and make them feel appreciated."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Information
Welcome to the second issue of the new format Esperanza Newsletter - we hope you still like it! This week, it was delivered diligently by our new dogsbody. MiszaBot (run by Misza13): any execution complaints should go to him. Content comments should be directed at the Esperanza talkpage. Thanks!
  1. The next elections: Approval voting as before and, also as before, an previous leadership member can run. Please submit your name for voting in the relevant section of this page. Voting starts on 2006-04-23 and ends on 2006-04-30. There will be three places up for grabs as KnowledgeOfSelf is leaving Wikipedia. Please see the previously linked page for full details.
  2. The Code of Conduct is now ready for extensive discussion! Specific comments should go to the Code of Conduct talk page, discussion of having one at all should be directed to the main Esperanza talk page.
  3. The current process for accepting proposals for new programs has been deemed fine. All Advisory Council members and the Admin Gen are to endevour to be bold when viewing discussion. If they feel that consensus has been reached, they will act accordingly.
A plea from the editor...
The propsed programs page is terribly underused! Please leave any comments, good or bad, on the page, to help us determine the membership's thoughts on the ideas there.
Signed...
