AfC Concerns[edit]

Please put back the page of the Ghanian Referendum, which is a sourced and confirmed event which will take place later this year. It seems a speciality for Wikipedia to approve all false news and reject the correct and sourced articles. This is last time in my life I waste my time to try to improve this shameful community . It is simply disgusting. If you are not even able to click and verify on the link to see the validity of the source, than you really leave Wikipedia and stop tampering the works of the others. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Maxcrc (talkcontribs)

First of all, the page is still there. Second, it doesn't matter how sourced and confirmed it is, an article that is 2 sentences long and only reports basic news is not an article; it's a headline. Wikipedia is not a newspaper. You can can feel free to look into our sister project Wikinews, where news is not only accepted, it is encouraged.
Also, if you feel that something (not this; anything else) is being done wrong or unfairly, do something about it. You can talk to me (on this page), any admin, or find a place to ask about it here. —LucasThoms 20:25, 1 July 2014 (UTC)

Rollback rights[edit]

Hi, I just wonder you left me a message on my talk page how you got rollback rights on Wikipedia? --Allen Talk 04:58, 7 July 2014 (UTC)

@AllenHAcNguyen:I spent a long time (over 3 years, although much less than that is normal) making good, constructive edits and fighting vandalism (I had about 770 edits at the time I requested it). I had a need for it to do what I wanted to do: last month I averaged 45 edits a day, and most of that was fighting vandalism. It would've taken forever to do that by hand using the undo button. At this point in your Wikipedia career, I highly suggest you find something that interests you and work on it. Work hard and don't give up. If that's fighting vandalism, you'll know when the right time is to request rollback again. If it's something else, and you just happen to see vandalism in your day-to-day editing, the undo button should be more than sufficient. Any other questions? I'll gladly help with anything. —LucasThoms 05:09, 7 July 2014 (UTC)

Hong Kong Trails[edit]

Hello reason you did not allow my edit of the HK trail. I am not sure why ? I have run this trail for 8 years with a variety of GPS watches and with people doing the same. Trail running is a very popular activity and nowadays trailers want updated facts.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Lavignebap (talkcontribs)

@Lavignebap: My issue was not with what you added, it was that you didn't have a source to go with it. If it is only based on your own observations, it is not allowed. The source that's already there says 50, so we go with 50 until there's something to prove otherwise.—LucasThoms 05:10, 11 July 2014 (UTC)
yes but the original source is patently proven as incorrect by GPS technology. The source was an approximate reading from many years ago. Countless runners have expressed disappointment when they get to the finish and only find it is low 40kms. Wikipedia should be a resource to highlight inaccuracies rather than have acciracies deleted out by people that have no practical experience of the hk trail itself. I bracketed the correct distance to give prior warnings to runners contemplating doing the trail so they would not be shortchanged. Most would then access running GPS apps like strava, runkeeper, mapmyrun which would prove my correction.— Preceding unsigned comment added by lavignebap (talkcontribs)
@Lavignebap: First of all, please reply here at the bottom of the page. Second, you have to find some other source to support it only being 43 km. The trail's official website says 50, so unless you have independent proof, we can't include your observations. —LucasThoms 15:38, 11 July 2014 (UTC)

Sorry that I wrote my correction in the wrong place and more sorry that you accept an "official website" that was updated in 1992! Some sources for you to back up my claims and actually add legitamacy to this page which is currently misleading and damaging for the runners who use the Hong Kong trail as a training playground.

@Lavignebap: The reliable sources noticeboard is a little behind at the moment, so I don't have the second opinion I was looking for. However, according to the reliable source guideline, Strava is not a reliable source, because it is self published by its users. If you have any other source that says it's 43km, instead of 50, I'd love to see it. Until then, however, I'm more inclined to trust the government website that says 50. —LucasThoms 15:47, 15 July 2014 (UTC)
Sorry I find it pointless communicating with you. I will now add an article on Wikipedia about trail running in hk which will give the experience of myself and the 300+ members of my club. it will give accurate and useful information to the the many people who need it. I will highlight the the inaccuracies of official government sites(ironically one of the original goals of this very website). Because you don't even acknowledge that this a safety issue. Further I find it bizarre - to the extreme - that you label GPS technology as self published. The only way to perform a self publish with the application is to delete the run/hike/cycle is to delete your data. In all honesty this is a serious issue for hikers/runners. They rely on their GPS data to check they are going the correct direction. I have been involved in three search parties(where we relied on GPS) to find three lost runners in the early stages of the HK trail. One had actually fallen down a side of a cliff and died-which to this day haunts me. Why were they lost? Because the 'official site' says section 1 is 7km long and they had only gone 5km. They backtracked found a new trail and went well off trail.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Lavignebap (talkcontribs)
@Lavignebap: While I'm sorry to hear about that runner, I still don't see why, if the trail is 43 kilometers, absolutely no one has said anything about it. If I Google the trail's name and "50 km", I find many results naming it at 50 (most of the results are not reliable sources; however, some are). On the other hand, a search for its name with "43 km" returns...nothing. —LucasThoms 00:23, 16 July 2014 (UTC)

No probs. Unfortunately, I come across an awful lot of sockpuppets because of the topic area that I frequent. But even now I often spot them either after they've been messing around for quite a while or when someone else points out what (with hindsight) is obvious. It is a fine art but experience tends to count for a lot: the more you see, the easier it becomes to spot the signs. @Ponyo:, whose talk page I link to above, has checkuser rights, which means they can do some digging around that is not possible by the likes of you and I. - Sitush (talk) 00:22, 13 July 2014 (UTC)

Hi, I will have one of our staff go through the process of getting a photo approved for wikipedia next week. I would rather not spend my Saturday messing around with this - I can barely even figure out how to send you a message on here! That all said, I can tell you she does not give permission for that other photo to be used and has asked me to change it. I guess technically it was taken in a public setting, but she isn't a celebrity, just a government employee, so I'm not sure its ethically appropriate for random photos to be attached to her Wikipedia page - whatever the technical rules are.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Alpharomeo6 (talkcontribs)

@Alpharomeo6: According to this guideline, if the picture was taken in a public setting and has no negative connotations (defamatory captions, etc) attached to it, we don't really have a good reason to get rid of it. Also, since you're (as far as I can tell) being paid to do this editing, make sure you read and understand how to disclose that to avoid possible consequences. I do not recognize your authority on OSB, I looked at the other areas where you deleted people's input and it seems you are just deleting things without reason. I am a Habitat for Humanity crew lead, Project engineer for several construction projects, and my sources are first person accounts, many of them, by builders and people living in homes with OSB-related problems. The suspect information regarding OSB is that provided by the sellers. Do not use people trying to hawk the product as your sole source of information on the product, especially when it is very easy to find dozens of sources, including articles in the Boston Globe and New York Times, on the hazards of OSB.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Lyn8nn (talkcontribs)

@Lyn8nn: The reason I undid your changes is that the source associated with the first sentence says it has good features. If it doesn't, we need a different source. Along with that, the paragraph you added didn't cite any source. To keep Wikipedia reliable, we need to cite verifiable, reliable sources to back up anything that's likely to be disputed, like a claim that there are negative health effects connected with something.
