Sorry, Winnipeg is not the coldest city with over 500,000

Hi, Winnipeg is not the coldest city in the world with over 500,000 population. There are Russian cities with even larger populations that are colder including Yekaterinburg, with about 1.3 million people. Also Irkutsk and Tomsk both with over 500,000 but smaller than Winnipeg are colder. At Irkutsk the January mean is -21C vs. -19C for Wpg, April -0.5C vs. 4C, July 15.5C vs. 19.5C and Oct -0.5C vs. 5C. I'm not getting my info for the Russian cities from Wikipedia, and in general Wikipedia should not be relied on for weather stats ,but from the Russian Government weather service. Yes, you are correct, Edmonton Int'l has a warmer January mean but that's irrelevant. It is the mean annual temperature that is referred to when suggesting that a city is warmer or colder than another. Overall, Winnipeg's mean annual temperature is 0.2C warmer than Edmonton's, primarily because the summer temps and particularly summer nighttime temps are considerably warmer at Winnipeg on average by 4 or 5 degrees C. If you want to say that Winnipeg has the coldest winters, (which in Canada means 1st Dec through 28th [or 29th] Feb) of any Canadian city with over 100,000 population or any provincial capital that would indeed be fact. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 142.161.166.108 (talk) 07:43, 16 February 2009 (UTC)

May I ask you to revert your last edit to the Cyrillic Alphabet Navbox? Я and Ѧ are glyph variants of the same character, and should refer to the same page, where the relationship between them is discussed. My view is that there should be three pages: one for each of the characters that survived into the 20th century, viz Я/Ѧ and Ѫ, and a third to discuss the rather complicated history of the various other jus characters. Therefore from the navbox both Я and Ѧ should link to Ya, Ѫ should link to Great Yus (when we have it) and Ꙗ should link to Jotated A (Cyrillic). Therefore although linking “Ѧ” to Я does indeed remove a letter from the set that link to the jusy, far from being redundant it provides more information about the character than there is on the Yus page. CJ article

I have a house/room guest at the moment and so can't devote the time to this article tonight as I might, as it's been on my mind lately and your recent edits, and your creation of the wiktionary entries, have spurred me to it, finally; a lot of what's been asked for citations at the moment is avilable directly in such primary sources as Lejeune, Shaw, Gibbs ("easy to learn" etc, which in fact is on the cover/preface of any copy of Kamloops Wawa); as for the modern-era stuff about nativized pronunciation, that's Zenk, Robertson et al. that I got that from and it's in Holton's book for sure. Mostly tonight, re this short note to you, is I've been wondering for a while what to do about the vocabulary section, which started out as a list of sample words, meant to give an idea of what types of words came from which language; it mushroomed over time; and because some of those words have articles or disambiguation pages (skookum, tillicum, tyee, skookumchuck and others, and others potentially too....) there's still a need for a word-list; obviously what's there can't stand, nor can it grow....but where to put it? Into an ancillary sandbox? somehow migrate it to the incubator (despite the one-dialect pretense of that space, or which was a POV space until I, well, added my own POV about the other POV....). Other modenr citations are in Lillard/Glavin and I continue to dispute the need to disccriminate against non-native forms by the POV fork of the "English language speakers" page ("non-indigenous speakers" would at least have been a better title)....this is also an article where there are many bad sources, including the hihgly POV modern academic ones.....(as opposed to older-era ones, which make no attempts to be culturally judgemental as today's p.c. ones do....). I gotta go, house guest and all, but didn't want to just make the few edits I did without making further comment....for now, othe than what cites I know I can add, what can we do about that word list without destroying it altogether?Skookum1 (talk) 01:37, 28 January 2009 (UTC)

PS I added "slang" to the infobox, which maybe the infobox doesn't like as it's not an official "family", but the CJ was more than a pidgin and even in idngenous languages is used as a slang, i.e. only for certain words/expressions, "peppered" in amongs ths "host" language.....which is how most of it is known today, although (contrary to the distortions coming out of Grand Ronde) I've met or corresponded with non-natives fluent in the "pure Jargon" (who are not supposed to exist or be capable of the so-called "correct" pronunication.....).Skookum1 (talk) 01:39, 28 January 2009 (UTC)

Wikitext format for headings

What?? does that bother to you? come on, it doesnt even show in real article, the only meaning is to make every headers similar I dont know what has happened here because all headers looks like same (same spaces before and after ==) the script should fix oly different spacings in headers , but try to calm down.. you message is quite unnecessary IMO, the script doesnt change headers to different format, it only makes them similar in same article, in this case some error has happened (made by me personally maybe) and I dont wander around articles and change them (headers) there is always some main change like in this case the flag remove--Typ932 ^T·C 08:26, 28 January 2009 (UTC)

Technical issue

Dear Michael,
I experience a technical problem with the Holodomor talk page. My computer (Red Hat Enterprise) restarts immediatelly after I try to open a talk page. This never happens when I do that using Windows computers, and never happens when I enter other WP pages from Linux computers. I use different Linux computers with the same result (immediate reboot). Since you are the WP administrator, you, probably, can advise me to whom should I contact to resolve the issue.

I didn't remove anything, he removed what I wrote and I simply reverted it. The article in question is about the Katyusha rocket launcher, my source indicated a Hamas militant fired a Katyusha rocket at Ashkelon. I'm assuming it was fired from a Katyusha rocket launcher, as that is the only vehicle it can be launched from. As pointed out here, Katyusha rocket launchers were mounted on many platforms during World War II, including on trucks, artillery tractors, tanks, and armoured trains, as well as on naval and riverine vessels as assault support weapons., the Katyusha rocket could have been fired from a number of machines and still be considered a Katyusha rocket launcher.

Katyusha & straddling

Hi. I edited out the term "straddling" because that's a technique used by conventional tubed artillery (not always on purpose) but I didn't think the area-fire katyushas of WW2 would have employed that technique. Definition of "Fire control" concept (military)?

Hi Michael. I've noticed that you collaborated in several articles related to military topics, and maybe you can help me.
What I'm looking for is the concept definition of "Fire control" as used in the military (eg: in Artillery). What I've found is an article about Fire control systems, but the basic concept is not defined; so I left a message in the Talk page.
Do you know if this concept is defined annywhere in Wikipedia? If not, it might be notable enough for a short article.

VOX-ATypI

Regarding your additions/edits to the VOX-ATypI classification article. Where did you find the bits about 'classicals', 'modern' and 'calligraphics'? I would like to see some references, because as far as I know these categories you added are not part of the the VOX-ATypI classification. Hm, as far as I know these are not part of the classification, but they are alternate names used for these families of typefaces (most of them can be found in other Wikipedia articles). There were already several alternate names in the article—it is not clear which are part of the specification and which are not, and that should probably be made clear, but I don't have access to the spec. Including such alternate names is important to help the reader understand the substance of the specification in a real-world context. —Michael Z. 2009-12-12 17:34 z

I have removed my fact-tags, for the time being, from the article. And I'll see if I can find some book that mentions these alternate group names somewhere. Strangely enough the ATypI doesn't seem to have the specifications of the classification system on their website, but perhaps I can request it. I agree that it can help readers to understand the system, but perhaps it should be made clear that these supporting additions to the article are not part of the official classification. Dazzle ships

Hello,

I noticed recently your photograph of a Dazzling painting on Commons. Could you please check the validity of the license? I believe the work is in the public domain here in Canada (death + 50 y.), which lets me publish my photo of it. Not sure how US laws and Wikipedia's status affect this, but I can't imagine that my PD image somehow becomes copyrighted by someone else again after being transmitted across the border. . .  —Michael Z. 2009-12-16 06:36 z

According to the Commons licensing policy, “Wikimedia Commons accepts only media that are in the public domain in at least the United States and in the source country of the work.”. The painting has been published in Canada, and is therefore PD in your country, but the US haven't recognized the rule of shorter term. But I'm not a specialist, and I'm a bit confused by this sentence : “The only mention of such a rule was added in 1994 with the URAA in 17 USC 104A, which automatically restored copyrights on many foreign works, unless these works had already fallen in the public domain in their country of origin on the URAA date, which is January 1, 1996”. Wow, they have provided me the complete explanation really fast! The painting having being published prior to 1923, it's the 75-years after creation copyright that applies in the US. Зараз вона зазнає великого тиску з боку західних діаспор та регіонів України, які хочуть будь-що віддалити її від руської, навіть якщо такі дії нашкодять літературній мові. Дуже хотів би, що б ви ознайомились з сучасною мовою в Україні. Ось, наприклад, порівняйте Ваші слова написані літературно:

Будь-які історичні прецеденти перекручують мову. Я розмовляю й пишу мовою свого суспільства, якою мене навчали й виховували, і не поспішаю висувати претензії, щодо будь-якого іншого статусу для неї, та не соромлюся її. Коли я навчався у рідній школі, ця мова була мовою вільної української науки й суспільної діяльності.

Бачу великий вплив англійської на побудову Ваших речень. Вони занадто скорочені і читач має сам додумувати до кого й про що претензії, чого або кого автор не соромиться. "Усілякі" використовують зазвичай, коли хочуть передати наявність розмаїття об'єктів. Стид - руське слово. "Відбувають" термін у в'язницях. Використали "ані", але не протиставляли явно свої дії. А "здоров-будь" - це привітання, а не прощання. До-речі, "дев’ятдесять" - вірно буде "дев'яносто". І прошу, не сприймайте це як образу. Просто я дуже турбуюсь за стан рідної мови після Помаранчевої Революції. Після неї на телебаченні ніби змагання "Хто краще познущається над українською". Літературна мова забута і всі орієнтуються на діаспору, яка відірвана від коріння і зазнає впливу зовсім неспоріднених з українською культур і мов.UeArtemis (talk) 14:07, 20 April 2010 (UTC)

The edits have been reverted. If you're interested you should join the discussion at Template talk:Redirect#Quotes. Personally, I think that WP:PUNC discourages the use of curly quotes, even in a hatnote, but I also think that the curly quotes are prettier. My father has made for us a social program this program is of social effort and is the fight to rescue Missing children in the Ukraine in or name! That would certainly be a neat solution- however, if you're going to claim that it's PD in the Ukraine, please provide some evidence, and remove the non-free tag. Evidence: the photograph is from 1943. It is published by the manufacturer of the tank, with no photographer’s credit.[1] There is no evidence that the photographer is still living, or that he has ever been credited anywhere.
