explanation[edit]

Hi,

I just posted on Savidan's page, and only after I saved my remarks did I notice that you had posted above. I truly commend you for seeking out so many views, including Savidan's, and really working to make Smith Act trials of Communist Party leaders a great article. I also hassled him to make more statements and was disappointed when he did not. However, I think that Savidan is absolutely right in his current analysis of the article now at FAC; he was able to pinpoint so clearly the issues that bothered me.

I don't believe he has any ulterior motives. From my interactions with him in the past, I have found him quite to the point (a bit abrupt maybe), and unwilling to do things on MY time scale. He is an attorney after all and has a fine legal mind. That's all it is, I'm sure. He's been thinking of the article because you and I have poked him about it, and when he saw it at FAC he was undoubtedly already clear what his objections were.

Really, you have worked so hard and he is making excellent points. It always bothered me that the legal issues were muddled in the article, and it seemed to be more of a retrospective, sociological article than a legal one. He has pointed out exactly what needs to be done to make it a legal article. I want you to get that FA star! Best wishes, MathewTownsend (talk) 21:09, 11 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yates v. United States[edit]

Mentioning Red Monday? It's not a term everyone used. It's a term of opprobrium and an attack on the Supreme Court. It should not be just mentioned, here or in any article, without saying that someone called it that and for what reason. Nor should it be in the summary of an article when it is not mentioned in the body. Bmclaughlin9 (talk) 21:41, 19 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds good. Were you planning on following up on that? Otherwise, I'll do it. --Noleander (talk) 21:45, 19 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I moved it to the body and changed to: "The decision was announced on a Monday, concurrently with several other decisions related to Communism, including Watkins v. United States. The day was called "Red Monday" by some anti-communists that disagreed with the decision." --Noleander (talk) 21:55, 19 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Prose question[edit]

Hi Noleander, if you have time, I was wondering if you could do a run through of William S. Sadler with an eye for prose infelicities? Ian Rose just left a note asking for one more person to check on the article's prose after finding a couple issues in the lead. I don't think there's much of note in the rest of the article, the lead was rewritten late in the process. Thanks, Mark Arsten (talk) 16:12, 20 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Noleander,

First off, thanks for participating in the DRN discussion I posted. It helps a lot to have truly neutral editors involved. I am sure you were able to observe the inconsistencies of the arguments of certain editors in the DRN, minus those of Transporterman who stood by the same argument. There have been recent developments in the DRN, one of which could possibly warrant the inclusion of Hvidts text under WP:ATTRIBUTEPOV. It turns out the text I was using was wrongly cross aligned - see my comment as of 11:15, 21 June 2012 (UTC). Just thought I would bring this to your attention incase you wanted to comment on the topic further. Thanks! Arkatakor (talk) 17:03, 23 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Go to the page that has the image. If the page says "This is a file from the Wikimedia Commons. Information from its description page there is shown below" then you have to click on the "Commons" link in that sentence to get to the underlying image page. Edit the image page. Down towards the bottom (above the categories) just insert the line " {{personality rights}} ". Then Save. That should do the trick. --Noleander (talk) 06:30, 24 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Changes to Pi article[edit]

Hi Noleander,

The passage in the Pi article referring to the Bible was wrong and misleading. I made two edits to this. I might understand your reverting the second edit but not the first. The first corrects the error. Furthermore, the second edit removes the implied assertion that there was some intention of the Bible writers to refer to Pi, or Mathematics, at all. While I think the inclusion of the Bible passages adds to the historical considerations, the various assertions are not supported by the passages' references. The "two verses" were clearly taken out of context, leaving out pertinent verses below them. While a note referred to this somewhat, that didn't correct the faults within the article. This is a misrepresentation of the Bible – and some have wrongly claimed that the Bible is wrong here because it supposedly calls Pi three when it is not three – which unnecessarily adds contention within an article about Pi.

I think your reversion of my second edit was unnecessary.

I think your reversion of my first was—strange.

You said to ask questions here, or I might have sent this via email.

Smith trial[edit]

I was just about to add my support and minimal comments when Graham conferred the star, well done. I thought McCarthy was a loose cannon, didn't realise the extent of judicial persecution of leftist causes in the US, so a fascinating read for me as a Brit. I did wonder if the climate of fear from that time has an ongoing legacy in terms of legislation such as the Patriot Act, but I appreciate that's well beyond your remit and impossible to prove Jimfbleak - talk to me? 11:33, 30 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, there were two sources I saw that drew parallels between the McCarthyism era and the Patriot Act era (one source said "just substitute 'terrorist' for 'communist' ") but that should probably be covered in an article about the War on terrorism. --Noleander (talk) 13:08, 30 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2012 June newsletter[edit]

Apologies for the lateness of this letter; our usual bot wasn't working. We are now entering round 4, our semi-finals, and have our final 16. A score of 243 was required to reach this round; significantly more than 2011's 76 points, and only a little behind 2010's 250 points. By comparison, last year, 150 points in round 4 secured a place in the final; in 2010, 430 were needed. Commiserations to Pool A's Minas Gerais igordebraga (submissions), who scored 242 points, missing out on a place in the round by a whisker. However, congratulations to Pool B's Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions), whose television articles have brought him another round victory. Pool A's Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) came second overall, with an impressive list of biological did you knows, good articles and featured articles. Third overall was Pool D's New York City Muboshgu (submissions), with a long list of contibutions, mostly relating to baseball. Of course, with the points resetting every round, the playing field has been levelled. The most successful Pool was Pool D, which saw seven into the final round. Pool B saw four, C saw three and Pool A saw only the two round leaders.

A quick note about other competitions taking place on Wikipedia which may be of interest. There are 13 days remaining in the June-July GAN backlog elimination drive, but it is not too late to take part. August will also see the return of The Core Contest- a one month long competition first run in 2007. While the WikiCup awards points for audited content on any subject, The Core Contest about is raw article improvement, focussing heavily on the most important articles on Wikipedia. As ever, if you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Question on an image[edit]

I am considering adding, File:Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.jpg, to the Paul McCartney article, in the Beatles section. Is this image okay to use? Thanks again for your efforts at the FAC! ~ GabeMc (talk) 01:42, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The policy that governs such images is WP:NFCI. For album covers, it says: "Cover art from various items [may be used] for visual identification only in the context of critical commentary of that item (not for identification without critical commentary)." What that means is that the image cannot be used in an article that simply mentions the album; but it can be used in an article that critically discusses the album. If you think the PM has a discussion of the album, then it can be used in the article. If you use it, you must add a "fair use rationale" to the image page, at File:Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.jpg. To add the rationale: go to that page, and edit it. Find the two rationales that are already there (they are templates named "Non-free rationale album"). Copy one of those templates, and change the " Article =" field to say " Article = Paul McCartney". Then save. --Noleander (talk) 03:13, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks again, helpful as always! ~ GabeMc (talk) 03:18, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I did my best to add the fair-use rationale as you suggested, but I seem to have introduced an error I cannot see. Please help! Thanks again. ~ GabeMc (talk)
I fixed it. The error was there before you made your change. --Noleander (talk) 03:47, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A barnstar for you![edit]

The Teamwork Barnstar
Thanks Noleander! You assisted in various ways on the Paul McCartney FAC. Thank you! Without your help and support McCartney would not be a FA today! There really should be a reviewer's barnstar, because I think you would accumulate several! Great review, nicely done, extremely helpful! ~ GabeMc (talk|contribs) 21:34, 9 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You are welcome. That was a heckuva FAC ... you put a lot of work into it. Congratulations! --Noleander (talk) 14:46, 16 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Source spotcheck[edit]

Could you or another person do a source spotcheck on this FAC? I have several of the cited books and others are online, but a couple I may be unable to provide (article was mainly written by Arsonal). — Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:13, 9 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Your topic ban regarding articles related to Judaism[edit]

The ARBCOM decision to impose a topic ban on you regarding articles related to Judaism made the ban indefinite with the provision that you could request that it be lifted after a year had passed. Since the ARBCOM decision was made in April 2011, more than a year has passed. Do you intend to request a lifting of the ban? The reason I ask is that I have been waiting to ask your opinion/assistance with the article on Economic antisemitism but I can't do that as long as the topic ban is in effect. (Technically, you can't even say "Good job" or "needs work" wrt the article. So, please just answer the question that I asked about your intent to request lifting of the ban.) Thanx. --Pseudo-Richard (talk) 02:18, 17 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

For the time being, I'm avoiding all articles related to religion, just to be on the safe side :-) I have no immediate plans to change that, but if circumstances change, I'll let you know. --Noleander (talk) 04:10, 17 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
