Mossel bay[edit]

Hi. I saw the discussion on the talk page - I am happy to help fix it Gbawden (talk) 13:45, 15 August 2012 (UTC)

  • Thank you very much. I appreciate it, this page has been on my watchlist probably since I even had one... I just haven't had the time to do anything other than tag the page. Plus my watchlist has grown exponentially since then... Thanks again! Paris1127 (talk) 14:05, 15 August 2012 (UTC)

Maasin[edit]

Although I agree that it was 'travel guide' like section and advertising. I feel that the stores Malls should be removed also. Like BOSS (brodeth) is mentioned several times. Is there really any need for these banks to be listed. Even the school section is way over the top. Schools is big business in Maasin City. On the whole this Maasin page is a complete mess. Boopolo (talk) 16:24, 10 September 2012 (UTC)

I've removed the banks and stores sections, plus telecommunications and shipping because Wikipedia is not a directory... As for Maasin being a mess, I've seen worse, mainly pages about cities/districts which are full of travel guide/directory-like information and numerous abuses of basic English grammar, punctuation and spelling. Weird. I've asked the blocking admin (Favonian) to take a look, as I genuinely can't see any block in effect here. Yunshui  13:22, 14 September 2012 (UTC)

I think I've fixed it. Try editing now. Yunshui  13:27, 14 September 2012 (UTC)
Thank you so much... What was the problem? Paris1127 (talk) 13:31, 14 September 2012 (UTC)
The IP address was blocked - but for some reason, the block didn't show up in any of the usual places. On the offchance, I tried simply unblocking the IP address - since it came back with a confirmation message, I guessed that the problem was solved. Happy editing! I suspect that at least 4 IP addresses involved in an edit war are the same person. How do I get this investigated? The page has already seen the 3RR broken... Paris1127 (talk) 09:14, 20 September 2012 (UTC)

Hi, Paris1127. You can request for semiprotection of the page in Wikipedia:Requests for page protection in the meantime to prevent further edit-warring until it can be resolved by discussion in the talk page. You can also request for administrator intervention in WP:AN if the edits are disruptive.-- OBSIDIANSOUL 09:39, 20 September 2012 (UTC)
I already requested protection. I am concerned, however, that I might get blocked because I was involved in the edit war... I finally put the page back the way it was before I even got involved, at least until the page is protected. I think the edits are disruptive, as they are unsourced (my concerns are laid out on the page's talk page), but not everyone may agree. Paris1127 (talk) 09:42, 20 September 2012 (UTC)
I assume you mean 1996 Garley Building fire? I wouldn't worry. Blocks for edit warring (which is almost always temporary and quite short) are preventative, not punitive. Admins are also not quite robotic rule-sticklers. Reverting unsourced contentious material is more a case of reverting vandalism/outright hoaxes than a content dispute, and you did try to discuss it with the other parties in question. That said you may want to bring in an admin on this one. Try using the {{Admin help}} template instead.-- OBSIDIANSOUL 09:56, 20 September 2012 (UTC)
OK, thanks a lot! Paris1127 (talk) 10:07, 20 September 2012 (UTC)

Question for administrator[edit]

I suspect that 4 IP addresses that have been reverting edits (I've removed unsourced information; they just put it right back; I suppose it could be considered a type of edit warring) to 1996 Garley Building fire may be the same person. I've requested page protection, but there's a backlog. What can be done to determine if these four IPs are, in fact, the same person? I don't know how to open this sort of sockpuppet investigation... Paris1127 (talk) 10:07, 20 September 2012 (UTC)

A wild admin appears! Paris1127, don't sweat it - you're reverting blatant vandalism (just to be sure, I double checked - the only place the phrase "Gomer Pyle Inferno" has ever been used is on that Wikipedia page and a number of slow-to-update wikimirrors), and you're therefore not violating 3RR. I'm adding a short term page protection to the article to prevent further disruption. Keep up the good work! Yunshui  10:09, 20 September 2012 (UTC)
They're almost certainly the same user; all the IPs are from the same ISP (Telecom Malaysia). I think the range is too wide for a rangeblock, unfortunately, but I'll ask an experienced SPI admin to take a look and see if they think anything can be done. Yunshui  10:13, 20 September 2012 (UTC)
Thanks again, Yunshui! Paris1127 (talk) 10:24, 20 September 2012 (UTC)

────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────Just a final note on this; having discussed it with Dennis Brown, it's evident that blocks or rangeblocks won't solve the problem. Protection is the best way forward, but I hadn't spotted the lone edit from this user back in June, so it's possible that I locked the page for too short a period. It's on my watchlist and yours too, I'd imagine; if you see him popping up again after the lock expires, revert at will and either drop me a line or request longer protection at RPP. Cheers, Yunshui  12:26, 20 September 2012 (UTC)

Block[edit]

You suggested the block on the List of members of the American Legislative Exchange Council. Blocking is fine. The problem is the sequence this article is frozen in, leaves the sanitized, whitewashed, one-sided POV version Arzel has been disruptively trying to have presented. As you already observed, the dissenting opinion was well documented with reliable sources. That's the wikipedia way. Arzel presents no sources, just his word; "no it isn't." I think my version properly deserves to be the state this article is frozen in. TruthtellernoBS (talk) 02:00, 24 October 2012 (UTC)

Submit a request on the Talk Page, I can't edit the article either. While Arzel's does have POV issues, I sense some POV issues with your edit too. You may want to work on it to be more neutral. Paris1127 (talk) 04:51, 24 October 2012 (UTC)

Staying cool[edit]

I have a problem with only one editor Abhishek191288 who seems to be hellbent on vandalizing images that i have put up even if they are the solitary one on the page. He is from Banglore in Southern India more than 800 kms from Mumbai. What right does he have to be vandalizing articles on Mumbai's suburban rail network. In another context, would you tolerate someone who is not even from the region to vandalize your work? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Superfast1111 (talkcontribs) 10:32, 5 November 2012 (UTC)

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't like it either---especially since I can't see any edit summaries (I'll take that up with him) which might explain the images' removal. I can't see an issue with the photo itself, but perhaps Abhishek191288 did, due to copyright, etc. Are the photos your own? The reason I left that message on your talk page was to remind you to remain civil in your edit summaries. I see from your talk page that you have a bit of a history with this other user which has resulted in an edit war. In addition, the fact that he is from Bangalore and you Mumbai is of no relevance. You may have firsthand experience with these various train stations, but Wikipedia is open to everyone. Paris1127 (talk) 11:35, 5 November 2012 (UTC)

I can assure you it is not due to copyright. Every photo that i have uploaded has been taken by me & uploaded through wikipedia commons where i have clearly uploaded the copyright status. I have tried hard to be as civil as i can but Abhishek is going on like a broken gramophone with his 'thoughts'. for example if you visit Mulund railway station, you will see an extremely blurred image as you open it. I have uploaded 3 others. Abhishek has removed my images & left the other one intact. in another case of August Kranti Rajdhani Express,he removed my images despite me informing him (on his & articles talk page) that the previously uploaded image was of the wrong train. If he still does not get it, then there is something much more wrong with him. There have been other who have edited my work but with logic or they have written down why they did it in a way that i could see their point of view. Some of the articles where i uploaded the images, mine was the only image. What business has he got removing them? Wanted to formally report him as a vandal but was'nt sure that would have solved the problem. He has got a ego problem & well i dont give in to people who try to bully me. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Superfast1111 (talkcontribs) 18:15, 5 November 2012 (UTC)

Paris,I with due respect to you am undoing your edit. Once again the pics have been taken my me. did you visit the mulund railway station page? Superfast1111 (talk) 09:58, 6 November 2012 (UTC)

That is the major issue. You are hell bent on cluttering pages with images taken by you without consensus. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 13:12, 8 November 2012 (UTC)

Mike Bingham article[edit]

If I understand you correctly, you put the NPOV template on because you thought the article was too sympathetic, rather than objective as required. The reason for my interest is that there is a constant war of words on http://en.mercopress.com/current-edition Material such as this article can be quoted. So when it seemed that there was a dispute I naturally wanted to find out what was being said. Is there a way to find out who the original author was? Might it have been Mike Bingham himself? Wouldn't that count as conflict of interest? Research I have done suggests that Mike Bingham is no slouch at computers and the internet. But it is supposition on my part. On the other hand, wiki is a popular target for certain argentines. As an example, you could look up the User contributions for Avargas2001. A blocked account because of the user's liking for malicious edits. Are there grounds to investigate this article to see if it was self-penned? Agent0060 13:21, 27 January 2013 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Agent0060 (talkcontribs)

The original author of the page is Doctorpleiades, who has no contributions aside from this article, which he/she posted to Wiki on 28 September 2011. This could very well be Mike Bingham, but, at my clearance level, there's no way to prove it. I don't understand why any Argentinians would vandalize this page, as Dr. Bingham was very critical of the government of the Falklands (or Malvinas, if you prefer). As for the Mercopress, what is the war of words about? Arguing about the islands' sovereignty? Or disagreements about which penguin residents are cutest? Paris1127 (talk) 19:12, 27 January 2013 (UTC)

CIEE Content[edit]

Hello,

Please tell me what I can do to edit the CIEE content without being blocked. If there is a way for you to look at the history for the past month and see what the errors have been, that would be really helpful. I have adjusted content to meet all requirements and I can't identify what I'm doing wrong. Please tell me what to do.

Thank you, --Rmcd1986 (talk) 21:22, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

Could you tell me what names you were editing under? This will give me a better idea of which edits to look at. Paris1127 (talk) 23:30, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
I first edited under a branded name and then under 'studyabroadlife'.--24.39.60.194 (talk) 15:10, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
That would be the problem. Names like those are promotional and if you were editing any other article would be fine, but the fact that you were editing the CIEE page required their blocking. If you want to make a change to the page, I'd suggest using the Talk Page to propose what you would write. Paris1127 (talk) 16:11, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

Winter storm naming[edit]

I just wanted to make you aware of this discussion I started at Winter storm naming. I have no intentions of making any changes to the article myself, but was just hoping to get input from editors previously involved in the article (or recently-closed AfD) in an effort to improve the article and clarify its purpose. I will leave any changes to the consensus of other editors who decide what's best. Your participation would be welcome, regardless of your views on the issue. Thank you. 76.189.111.199 (talk) 22:38, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

Why Do You Keep Removing Information on Hirosaki University Page?[edit]

Paris1127, I see that you've repeatedly removed information about Hirosaki University that my students (of Hirosaki Univ) or I have added. Some of the information was not encyclopedic, so I understand that removal, but the information you recently removed was about Campus dining facilities and existing clubs for students. This information is factual and not subjective, so please refrain from removing such information. Thank you for working to keep Wikipedia the best resource that it can be. Prof-Edo (talk) 00:44, 31 July 2013 (UTC)

Your information may very well be factual, but it needs a citation. In addition, I don't believe that the campus restaurant info is encyclopedic. If you want your students to practice with Wikipedia, perhaps you might consider setting up a sandbox? Or perhaps, a sub-page of your own userpage? Paris1127 (talk) 00:53, 31 July 2013 (UTC)

Admin Help[edit]

I suspect someone is using multiple IP addresses in order to add the same bit of unsourced information to a page, deleting a sourced paragraph in the process. I suspect it's a case of IP Sock. However, I do not know how to proceed, or if I can prove it. I've tried to get the page protected, but so far I've had no luck. Can you help me? Paris1127 (talk) 17:55, 4 September 2013 (UTC)

A link to the page in question would be helpful (at this stage, you don't need admin help); why was your RFPP denied? Read this essay to help you decide if you want to begin a sockpuppet investigation. All the best, Miniapolis 13:50, 5 September 2013 (UTC)

Jonathan Del Arco[edit]

There is a close paraphrase issue at Jonathan Del Arco. There appears to be no single editor who might be likely to undertake fixing this; I identified the editor with the most edits in 2012, and 2013; only the four of you, with two edits each met that low hurdle.

I outlined the issue at the talk page, my hope is that one or more of you will undertake to salvage the article.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 00:52, 6 October 2013 (UTC)

Opting in to VisualEditor[edit]

As you may know, VisualEditor ("Edit beta") is currently available on the English Wikipedia only for registered editors who choose to enable it. Since you have made 100 or more edits with VisualEditor this year, I want to make sure that you know that you can enable VisualEditor (if you haven't already done so) by going to your preferences and choosing the item, "Enable VisualEditor. It will be available in the following namespaces: $1". This will give you the option of using VisualEditor on articles and userpages when you want to, and give you the opportunity to spot changes in the interface and suggest improvements. We value your feedback, whether positive or negative, about using VisualEditor, at Wikipedia:VisualEditor/Feedback. Thank you, Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 18:24, 11 October 2013 (UTC)

How do I edit a page about me???[edit]

User:Paris1127 sent me a message saying I could not edit a page about me. This is ridiculous and there seems no way to respond to Paris1127???? here is what I want the article to say: Tell me what's wrong with the TRUTH!!!!!!!!!!!!! I didn't start this page, it just appeared, but it is about ME!

Bill Crews (born 12 July 1952[1]), a gay American local politician, served as the mayor of Melbourne, Iowa (population 700), from 1984 through 1998. Crews came out at the LGBT Equality March on Washington, D. C. in 1993, where he attracted national attention as a result of hate graffiti on his Melbourne house.[2] Political career

Crews was an attorney (University of Iowa College of Law JD 1977) working as a representative of the Iowa Governor when after moving to the city, he was approached to serve as mayor - filling a vacancy. At the election held the following year to fill out the term, Crews won all 57 votes cast. He was re-elected in the 1987, 1991, and 1995 elections.[1] During Crews' service as mayor of Melbourne, the city built a new fire station and library, improved water and sewer infrastructure and increased cash reserves.[citation needed] Formerly a moderate Republican, he claimed "I was a Republican from before the fundamentalists took over the Iowa party. I believe in progressive, fiscally responsible government. I am now a registered Democrat. I'm pro-choice; I've always been."[citation needed] Crews ran for the Iowa Senate in 1992 but lost by just 57 votes.[citation needed] After moving to the District of Columbia, Crews served two terms as an elected Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner (SMD 6C07) in the neighborhood of Capitol Hill. Crews also served as the Zoning Administrator for the District of Columbia from 2005 through 2007. Crews was once again elected as an Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner in 2010. Personal life

Crews' father, a United Methodist minister who fought for social justice, was killed in a car accident in 1973. Bill Crews was also active in the United Methodist church after coming out, until 1998 when he relocated to Washington, D.C. with his husband. Crews married Steve Kehoe (childhood in Waterloo, Iowa)on September 15, 2008, at San Francisco City Hall. A celebratory luncheon was held at the Top of the Mark, Mark Hopkins Intercontinental Hotel. They are celebrating 35 years together this 2014 New Year and reside on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. References

Hi. I've declined your speedy request as it doesn't fit 'made-up' (doesn't say 'invented by' or such) and it isn't nonsense (quite coherent - only real gibberish qualifies for that). However, I've taken it to AfD WP:Articles for deletion/Tsukineko as I seriously suspect it of being a hoax (but not blatant enough for speedy). It looks to be non-notable if it does exist anyway... Devyani Khobragade Incident[edit]

Dear Paris 1127, On your intimation I looked into the edit i had made. I do not intend to start any flame wars or anything. I just wanted to put into the page the latest developments in the incident. And keeping this in mind, I even started off with " As of 26 December.." so that at a later stage these can act as guiding light for providing a timeline to the incident. As for Debating on the neutrality content-wise, would not be wise as it has been sourced from authentic places. The tone seems to be fine to me, though i have made some fixes in 2-3 sentences.

Cheers! 7Sidz

Feedback needed on using special characters[edit]

Hello. Thank you so much for using VisualEditor. Having editors use it is the best way for the Wikimedia Foundation to develop it into the best tool it can be.

While we always welcome general feedback (please report any issues in Bugzilla in the "VisualEditor" product or drop your feedback on the central feedback page on MediaWiki.org), the developers are especially interested right now in feedback on the special character inserter. This new tool is used for inserting special characters (including symbols like , IPA pronunciation symbols, mathematics symbols, and characters with diacritics). It is intended to help people whose computers do not have good character inserters. For example, many Mac users prefer to use the extensive "Special Characters…" tool present at the bottom of the Edit menu in all applications or to learn the keyboard shortcuts for characters like ñ and ü.

The current version of the special characters tool in VisualEditor is very simple and very basic. It will be getting a lot of work in the coming weeks and months. It does not contain very many character sets at this time. (The specific character sets can be customized at each Wikipedia, so that each project could have a local version with the characters it wants.) But the developers want your ideas at this early stage about ways that the overall concept could be improved. I would appreciate your input on this question, so please try out the character inserter and tell me what changes to the design would (or would not!) best work for you.

The "insert" pulldown on the task bar of VisualEditor will lead you to the 'Special character' tool.

This is the Special character inserter as it appears on many wikis. (Some may have customized it.) Your feedback on this tool is particularly important.

Issues you might consider:

  • Do you normally use a character inserter? Which character sets are useful to you? Should it include all 18 of the character sets provided in the wikitext editor's newer toolbar at the English Wikipedia, the 10 present in the older editor toolbar, or some other combination of character sets?
  • How many special characters would you like to see at one time?
    • Should there be a "priority" or "favorites" section for the 10 or 12 characters that most editors need most often? Is it okay if you need an extra click to go beyond the limited priority set?
    • How should the sections be split up? Should they be nested? Ordered?
    • How should the sections be navigated? Should there be a drop-down? A nested menu?
  • The wikitext editor has never included many symbols and characters, like and . Do you find that you need these missing characters? If the character inserter in VisualEditor includes hundreds or thousands of special characters, will it be overwhelming? How will you find the character you want? What should be done for users without enough space to display more than a few dozen characters?
  • Should the character inserter be statically available until dismissed? Should it hover near the mouse? Should it go away on every selection or 10 seconds after a selection with no subsequent ones?
  • Some people believe that the toolbar already has too many options—how would you simplify it?

The developers are open to any thoughts on how the special character inserter can best be developed, even if this requires significant changes.

Please leave your views on the MediaWiki feedback page (your regular username/password works there), or, if you'd prefer, you can contact me directly on my talk page. It would be really helpful if you can tell me how frequently you need to use special characters in your typical editing and what languages are important to you.

Thank you again for your work with VisualEditor and for any feedback you can provide. I really do appreciate it. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 23:43, 17 February 2014 (UTC)

As you may have already heard, the Wikipedia community lost an invaluable member of the community last month. Adrianne Wadewitz was a feminist scholar of 18th-Century British literature, and a prolific editor of the site. As part of a worldwide series of tributes, New England Wikimedians, in conjunction with local institutions of higher learning, have created three edit-a-thons that will be occurring in May and June. The events are as follows:

We hope that you will be able to join us, whether you are an experienced editor or are using Wikipedia for the first time.

Has Wikipedia changed something about how templates appear? The boxes surrounding them have vanished for me... This has resulted in serious page clutter. Templates on top, on the side and on the bottom of pages are affected equally. Has anyone else seen this problem? Paris1127 (talk) 22:37, 14 August 2014 (UTC)

No. Could you point out a specific page where the effect occurs? For example, the {{help me}} template on this page appeared to work perfectly. If the problem persists, my suggestion would be to take a screenshot and to ask for help at WP:Village pump (technical). Huon (talk) 22:46, 14 August 2014 (UTC)
