Orphaned non-free image (File:AstraPlatformServicesLogo.jpg)[edit]

Hi Polly, Thanks for your message/concern but this image IS now used - I uploaded it (yesterday) before I finished the article, ASTRA Platform Services (today). You were just too damn quick! Hopefully, all is now OK for the image to stay (see, poetry too) Satbuff (talk) 17:20, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

Tomwhitman2 image[edit]

Hi Polly,

Thank you for your message. I was having some difficulty understanding which tag to use for my upload. I have permission from the owner of the image (Tom Whitman) to use the image on Wikipedia. It is an image that is easily found on the internet, and is on Facebook as well. It is not copyrighted in any way...really just a snapshot that has been used in the past on digital promotional materials in the past. Please help me notate it in the correct way so that I can stay within the Wikipedia guidelines.

Thanks much, Stephen --Srtheiss (talk) 21:47, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

  • Unless it has been explicitly released under a free license then it must be assumed to be all rights reserved and not free. You could try contacting the copyright holder and ask thenm to release it under a free license, see instructions here. Polly (Parrot) 21:53, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

Polly,

Tom Whitman owns the rights to the photo. He agrees to the free use of the photo. I am getting formal email confirmation for consent to use the image under the following agreement:

I hereby assert that I am the creator and/or sole owner of the exclusive copyright of WORK [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Tomwhitman2.jpg ].

I agree to publish that work under the free license .

I acknowledge that I grant anyone the right to use the work in a commercial product and to modify it according to their needs, provided that they abide by the terms of the license and any other applicable laws. I am aware that I always retain copyright of my work, and retain the right to be attributed in accordance with the license chosen. Modifications others make to the work will not be attributed to me. I acknowledge that I cannot withdraw this agreement, and that the content may or may not be kept permanently on a Wikimedia project.

7/29/2009, Tom Whitman

Once I get that confirmation, do I post that with the image file?

Thanks,

Stephen

  • Forward the email to permissions-en AT wikimedia DOT org Make sure to include the URL of the image. Then add {{OTRS-pending}} to the image page. Polly (Parrot) 00:37, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

Polly,

I submitted the email to OTRS on Friday, and they they removed the warning about the licensing, but the pending notice is still there and I have not received an email reply. Should I expect to receive a reply email?

Thank you,

Stephen —Preceding unsigned comment added by Srtheiss (talkcontribs) 02:30, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

Cerceris images[edit]

Hi Polly,

I have an e-mail conformation from the owner of the website (http://www.cerceris.info/) to use all the images I have uploaded. I have followed your instructions and e-mailed the permission I received in e-mail in to the address you provided. I was given permission to use any images on the site as public domain. Is this sufficient or is there anything else I need to do?

Thanks,

Andrew. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Andrew Morse (talkcontribs) 23:08, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

  • Yes just add this template to the image pages{{OTRS pending}}and remove the no permissions tag I added. Polly (Parrot) 23:15, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

About UTV_logo.jpg image[edit]

Hi Polly

I don't understand how UTV_logo.jpg is not linked to any article. It is very much linked to the article UTV Software Communications, the company to which the logo belongs. Please remove the warning template from the image page.

Thanks

Vijay Padiyar (talk) 21:26, 12 July 2009 (UTC)

  • It is now used, it wasn't when I tagged it. Template now removed. Polly (Parrot) 21:17, 12 July 2009 (UTC)
    • Ok, probably because I first uploaded the image and then added it to the article. Thanks, anyway! Vijay Padiyar (talk) 21:26, 12 July 2009 (UTC)
      • Yes I gave you all of six minutes before tagging it, that was rather too quick, my apologies. Polly (Parrot) 21:28, 12 July 2009 (UTC)

Image / Picture of Sarfaraz Khan[edit]

Hi,

On the captioned, the photo is of a local cheiftain in India circa 1739-1740 and is most probably a court potratit. The photograph by default is the property of the Government of India, Department of Archaeology and is freely available for Public Use through the Victoria Memorial Hall, Museum, Calcutta [West Bengal] India.

You may upload the photo without risk.

Metallic Falcons picture[edit]

To be honest, I have no idea how this free/non-free, replaceable/irreplaceable stuff works, so I just put anything. Can you tell me how to make it right? Othatzsokewl (talk) 05:46, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

Picture of Francesco Severi[edit]

Hello, I am writing you for the file permission problem about the use of Francesco Severi's photo: you can find the copyright data of the owner here. As you can find, in Wikipedia there are a number of already uploaded photos from the same source, as the entry about Sergei Sobolev, Louis Nirenberg, Jean Leray testify. Best regards, Daniele.tampieri (talk) 06:08, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

  • OK thanks for the info, have removed the tag. Polly (Parrot) 21:46, 14 July 2009 (UTC)

Alan Coren -- trying to load a picture[edit]

Hi, I took some pics of Alan Coren back in April 1969 while visiting the offices of Punch Magazine. I wanted to upload one of them to his Wikipedia page, and I'm afraid that I couldn't get it right. I followed the instructions, but couldn't figure out how to link the location on his page with the location on wikipedia for the picture (Alan_Coren.jpg). I own the copyright to the picture, should I put up a copyright notice with it? If so, how? Thanks. John Williamson —Preceding unsigned comment added by AbbotSoule&Hoyt (talkcontribs) 15:45, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

  • The image has been deleted, if what you say is correct reupload with a Creative Commons license and mention that you took the photo. Polly (Parrot) 21:49, 14 July 2009 (UTC)

Sorry about your mother's passing.[edit]

user:Bk2006[edit]

Condolences also. I note that Bk2006 (talk · contribs), who I've just blocked for a week for a really nasty edit summary, seems to be one of our problem users who ignores our guidelines on images. I sometimes give them notice that if they are not going to enter into dialogue and show that they understand and will try to comply with our guidelines, they may be blocked indefinitely (which can easily be lifted if they want it lifted). Any comments on this particular user? Dougweller (talk) 19:06, 14 July 2009 (UTC)

  • I've gone through their uploads and made a few adjustments and listed a lot a PUI. This user seems to have no grasp of copyright law, they seem to think anything they find on Google images is fair game. Polly (Parrot) 22:09, 14 July 2009 (UTC)
I caught him evading his block and making more insulting edit summaries (he's very anti-Indian to say the least), so I've given him an indefinite block. He was heading for one anyway.

reply[edit]

You disputed the {{Non-free use rationale}} for File:Zefnoon Safai, Legham Province, Afghanistan.jpg.

Were you aware that Afghanistan is not a signatory to any international copyright agreements, and has no domestic copyright protection laws?

Some wire services and freelance photographers treat images taken as if all the rights to them belong to whoever first publishes them in a country that does have copyright protection. IANAL, but I suspect this is nonsense.

Others have argued that images taken there remain in the public domain, no matter how and where they are published.

I've dropped some hints that the wikimedia foundation's lawyers should weigh in on the copyright issue of images taken in a country with no copyright protection. Until the lawyers weigh in I am going to upload images like this as "fair use", even though I suspect they are really PD. Geo Swan (talk) 03:13, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

  • Given their source it's plausible they are public domain and a work of the US Federal Gov. Polly (Parrot) 03:17, 15 July 2009 (UTC)
  • Do students of the service schools remain employees of the DoD? Do they continue to receive a salary while they study? Then I believe you are correct. I didn't realize that NPS == Naval Postgraduate School. Shall I add {{PD-USGov-Military-Navy}}? Geo Swan (talk) 03:25, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

  • You need to show that each one of the nine images is public domain by providing a source for all of them. Polly (Parrot) 15:54, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

Rock5410's images[edit]

After you went through the images in Kuvempu University and tagged them per CSD, I see that Rock5410 went through and duplicated the images but with different names, this time claiming he's the creator and releases the images into the public domain. <sigh> I've been mostly focused on his copying of non-free text so far, but I'm wondering what I can do to help with his persistent image copyright issues. I haven't really delved into the media use on Wikipedia before, so I'm not sure what the processes are. How do you handle something where it's obviously taken from that gallery website and it's likely a false claim of ownership? I'm going to go try to explain it to him on his talk page. I have gotten a response via a non-template message there previously (or at least a change in behavior), so maybe I can get his attention that way. He just seems to delete the template warnings without reading them. Thanks for working on this! WeisheitSuchen (talk) 11:56, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

  • If he keeps uploading copyrighted images under false free licenses then a block will be needed until he shows some understanding of copyright. I'll send all the images to PUI, but if he reuploads them then you might want to drop a quick note at AN/I to see if a block is appropriate. Polly (Parrot) 16:07, 15 July 2009 (UTC)
OK, that sounds like a plan. Thanks! WeisheitSuchen (talk) 17:41, 15 July 2009 (UTC)
Just gave him an indefinite block with an explanation on his talk page, his latest talk age deletions were the last straw. Dougweller (talk) 18:11, 15 July 2009 (UTC)
Probably for the best, at least until they learn something about copyright. Polly (Parrot) 18:22, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

The deletion of my pic[edit]

Please, explain why you want to delete my picture? What's wrong with it? This is from my mother's personal collection, one of the last surviving photos of Shop national clothes from Pirot, it is therefore very precious. Thank you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Zhix (talkcontribs) 15:48, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

  • The image just lacks a copyright notice, please take a look at the free licenses here and select one and add it to the image page. You could also add a bit of detail about the image, approximately when it was taken and a brief description would be helpful. Polly (Parrot) 16:21, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

my recently uploaded image logo [Grain surfboards logo.jpg][edit]

Hello Polly

I uploaded the image for the article of the same name which I am still currently working on to be able to appreciate the complete preview while I continue editing and I'm seriously not aware that I cannot upload a non-free logo for an article that I haven't finished yet and I really apologize for that. I'm still researching for the article I'm creating. That way I can be sure I entered all the right information. And would it be okay if I let you review the article before I submit it? Any suggestions and tips from you would be deeply appreciated. You may email me at sujirou@ymail.com

Photographs[edit]

I have uploaded two files – File:Making of Baluchari Sari.jpg and File:Cluster of Temples.jpg. Both the files are from Wikitravel. They were uploaded in Wikitravel by another person and I have copied his comments. The original pictures are, therefore, neither mine nor uploaded by me. I donot have the required permission from the original owners of the photograph. The person who initially uploaded the photographs does not seem to be active any more. However, in India, the public relations departments (PR deptts) of various companies, as well as government bodies distribute hundreds of pictures to the media for free publication. This is a standard practice in this country. Therefore, I do not feel that any copy right problems are involved in the publication of any such photograph. However, if you think otherwise fell free to delete both the photographs. I would only loose some valuable supporting visuals. Sorry, for the trouble. Cheers. - Chandan Guha (talk) 03:59, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

  • Unfortunately without a clear permission from the copyright holder these images can't remain under a free license. It can't be assumed that the copyright holder would find this licensing acceptable. Polly (Parrot) 00:47, 17 July 2009 (UTC)
  • If licensing is the only problem please suggest an acceptable licensing. Thanks. - Chandan Guha (talk) 05:19, 17 July 2009 (UTC)
A fair use rationale wouldn't really work as the images would be pretty easy to replace with free versions. So only a free license really works, if you can't show that the image has been freely licensed by the copyright holder then it will likely be deleted. Have you tried looking on Flickr for some freely licensed similar images? Polly (Parrot) 13:31, 17 July 2009 (UTC)

I forget the ticket number, but we got an OTRS confirmation of license release by FN's US division for this image (and as a blanket, their other PR photos of their weapons products... they've been very helpful that way).

File copyright problem with File:Cage rotor.jpg File Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading File:Cage rotor.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the file. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. Polly (Parrot) 16:19, 10 July 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Msdaif (talkcontribs)

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate.

Please note: This is an automatic notification by a bot. I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 01:24, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi[edit]

Hey there Polly ;), I was just poking around and helping out at WP:CSD by clearing the backlog of images that needed to be deleted, and I noticed your extensive work with pseudo speedy deletion in images. And I just thought I'd stop by and say that I appreciate all of the work you are putting into helping keep Wikipedia free of unnecessary non-free images and making sure that all non-free images meet policy :). I also wanted to say thank you for your welcome to wikipedia message that you gave me when I first joined wikipedia back in Feb of '08 :). The links in the welcome message were very useful to me when I was first starting out on Wikipedia, and heck now that I'm an admin I look back and see that those links really helped me to get started on wikipedia and to become the user I am today. So thanks for all of your dedication and kindness past, present, and hopefully in the future for a long time to come :). Best, Mifter (talk) 03:37, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

Thank you Mifter for the lovely and thoughtful message, I can't believe how quickly all that time has gone. It was great to hear that the welcome message was helpful and that you've gone on to become an admin. That welcome template with the links can be very useful, I still keep mine at the top of my talk page as it often comes in handy.
Image upload patrolling is pretty relentless and time consuming. Wikipedia's image use policies and guidelines can be very hard for established users to comprehend let alone newbies, so it's always nice when someone appreciates your efforts. Keep on doing what you do Mifter and may Wikipedia long continue to benefit from your presence. Polly (Parrot) 18:10, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

did I fix it?[edit]

The indivual images stated that they were not used so i put them on a page and therefore was able to take off the tag, was that all that was wrong or am I missing it?!--Jeffmeck22

  • No they are fair use images so can't be used on User pages only articles. They are also replaceable fair use images so would really not be acceptable for articles either. Sorry to be the conveyor of bad news. Polly (Parrot) 19:12, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

what can I do though?[edit]

what can I do to fix it though?Jeffmeck22 (talk) 19:16, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

  • Virtually nothing, those fair use images as they are replaceable by free images will likely be deleted, see section 12 here. Polly (Parrot) 19:19, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

Photo of the Prof. George Dvali[edit]

Hello. So should I contact to the München University to get the permission from the staff to use the photospecifically in the wiki article? They already published the media for the wide audience for educational purposes without restriction.Regards, --Zetalion (talk) 20:20, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

  • The image would need to be released under a free license that permits derivative and commercial works, see here for instructions about getting permission from an images copyright holder. Polly (Parrot) 20:35, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

Image question...[edit]

hi i was just warned about some of the images i uploaded, but was wondering what to do as 2 of the images were referenecd to source. i have seen other images on wikipedia that i have seen on the internet. is it still possible to properly reference the pictures that have already been uploaed? Thanks! J929 (talk) 01:06, 26 July 2009 (UTC)

  • If the images aren't your own then given their content they are likely to be considered replaceable by free images, so unfortunately deletion is likely. Polly (Parrot) 20:23, 26 July 2009 (UTC)

Permissions For File:DaveGuard3.jpg[edit]

Hello Polly - I've received and noted your request for further information regarding this picture file, but I don't exactly see how either option can be applied in this case because this file has never been published before - it is a personal snapshot from the subject's family that's been scanned and sent to me. I cropped and sharpened it, but the original file has been posted only by the owner (Tom Guard) on his FaceBook page. Any brief advice you might give would be appreciated. Regards, Sensei48 (talk) 23:56, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

  • The copyright holders would need to release it under a free license, see the instructions here for requesting permission. Polly (Parrot) 23:59, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

removal of my page[edit]

I have noticed that my page has already been deleted and before I had a chance to respond. That is not fair. I thought I had seven days, obviously something is wrong.

I have read all the comments. Here is my response

1. I admit I am a newbie and perhaps I didn’t follow proper procedures. I find the instructions on Wikipedia written for computer nerds, but not for the average person like me. So I am doing my best to understand and anyone who has valid concerns, I am willing to read and respond accordingly.

2. That said. Let me make some preliminary remarks first. I do not know any of the people who are making these concerns. I don’t know if you are gay or straight. Whether you are a leader in gay rights movement or whether you were a large contributor to the Prop 8 campaign. I don’t know whether you are saying “nay” because you honestly do not feel my achievements are not worthy or whether you have a bias against gays and don’t want Wikipedia to show anything which would put gays in positive light.

One of the people who responded was a minister (I don’t see his comments now for some reason). Now I know that there are many denominations which are supportive of the gay community such as Quakers, Unitarians, United Church of Christ, Metropolitan Community Churches and Reform Jews. But there are many denominations which have caused a lot of pain to the gay community such as Mormons, Southern Baptists, and Assembly of God. So I don’t know where you are coming from.

I do not mind making some editing changes, but I do not want to be removed because of homophobes who has a bias against gays.

So let’s take a look at some of the concerns.

1. Polly said that I said I was the first gay school board member and she didn’t think that was correct. She is right. It isn’t correct, because that is not what I said. I am the first gay person in the country to win a seat on an elementary school board. I was also the very first gay person to be elected to a school board below college level in California.

Someone said where is the verification. I am not sure what verification you need, however you can verify what I said from a book called Out for Office which was published by the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund.

If there other things that you need to be verified let me know and I will provide that.

Someone said that being the first gay school board member, why is that so significant? Please refer to the Wikipedia page for Harvey Milk. He served in office less than a year before he was killed by a homophobe. He was elected to the city council of that city. As the Wikipedia page says he was elected as the first gay man in California. I have served on a school board for over 20 years. Are you saying that a gay person who served less than a year is more important than a gay person who has served for over 20?

So how can I appeal the decision to have me removed? Please respond to rosevillegarymiller@yahoo.com —Preceding unsigned comment added by Gmillerkc (talkcontribs) 01:30, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of File:Alan Bates.jpg[edit]

A tag has been placed on File:Alan Bates.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a non-free file with a clearly invalid licensing tag; or it otherwise fails some part of the non-free content criteria. If you can find a valid tag that expresses why the file can be used under the fair use guidelines, please replace the current tag with that tag. If no such tag exists, please add the {{Non-free fair use}} tag, along with a brief explanation of why this constitutes fair use of the file. If the file has been deleted, you can re-upload it, but please ensure you place the correct tag on it.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.
