Source for General MIDI sound descriptions?[edit]

Last year you added a number of descriptions and clarifications to the list of General MIDI program change messages. What are your sources for these? They seem like important information - for instance, I've long wondered what the heck "Goblins" was supposed to be - but having such descriptions at all seems to contradict what it says in sources like the General MIDI spec itself, which say that only the names are specified and it's up to synthesizer manufacturers to decide what they mean. Is there published information surveying how major manufacturers have interpreted the names in practice?
