Re wikiproject Canada Roads

Tried to peek at WikiProject Canada Roads participant User:SaveVp to see why their talk page was red linked. .. a unique message comes up for this ...User account "SaveVp" is not registered. If you wish to use "SaveVp" as your username, please make a request at Wikipedia:Changing username. Is there a way to contact this potential new Ontario Transportation contributor or is there a wikipedia thingie to do in this circumstance that you know of? New Project

Myself and several other editors have been compiling a list of very active editors who would likely be available to help new editors in the event they have questions or concerns. As the list grew and the table became more detailed, it was determined that the best way to complete the table was to ask each potential candidate to fill in their own information, if they so desire. This list is sorted geographically in order to provide a better estimate as to whether the listed editor is likely to be active.

If you consider yourself a very active Wikipedian who is willing to help newcomers, please either complete your information in the table or add your entry. If you do not want to be on the list, either remove your name or just disregard this message and your entry will be removed within 48 hours. The geographic template

Hello... couple of questions for you. One, I noticed you restored the "image" code. My thought on removing it was that it encourages use of images for decorative purposes, which is contrary to WP:FLAG. Second, I've reverted some other changes from earlier today which added fields for WNW, ENE, WSW, and ESE. I think they are a bit too fine a detail for this template, especially given that there's no room to add NNW etc. What do you think? --Ckatz^chat _spy 23:20, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

Canada Talk page Template

Hello there. Yourself and Arctic Gnome have made major contributions to the Template:WikiProject Canada. User:Mr C.C. has been making improvements to the SK communities and Neighborhoods branch of Saskatchewan wikiproject. The Sk wikiproject which is now as a province, included in the Canada template. There is also a department in the Canada template for communities. Mr. C.C. would like to be able to see how the Sk communities are coming along in regards to their ratings and assessment, and has also already received requests for review regarding ratings.

My query is In your humble opinion, should we start another talk page banner devoted to Wikipedia:WikiProject Saskatchewan Communities & Neighbourhoods/Assesment?

If this coding does work it means every province can have a workgroup identical to the Canadian nation wikiproject, which will mean sports articles, community articles can be worked on both at a local and national level!!! With just using the existing template!!! Saskatchewan has quite a few sports enthusiasts, I know, but with the Vancouver Olympics coming up, perhaps the wikiprojects out there (Vancouver or BC) would like a department on sports set up at a local level with assessments in this manner as well. cc Arctic Gnome SriMesh | talk 01:30, 21 July 2008 (UTC)

BC locator maps

Hi Qyd; I see you're the creator of the town-locator maps found on BC articles; or are on Naramata's anyway, not sure if it was you came up with the basemap. I think you may have seen my various comments about these maps, but "if not" - I don't think they work very well. People don't conceive of the BC map in terms of the RD boundaries; either in terms of terrain maps, or highway maps. Where things are relative to the regional districts is even less relevant when it's mountains and other non-muni items, but it doesn't work well for munis/settlements either. I think the terrain maps found on things like Clear Range and Cariboo Plateau would work a lot better, or else the even-more-familiar spiderweb of major highways. I think it was you that made those terrain map/basemaps originally anyway wasn't it? I gather that the town-locator maps are made by some kind of overlay of latlongs on the RD basemap; couldn't the same be done with a suitably-dimensioned terrain map? Map of Secwepemc territory/Shuswap language

Hi Qyd. I just removed two maps from Secwepemc and Shuswap language which used the regional district colouration for Columbia-Shuswap Regional District as if it were identical with "Shuswap region", and as if "Shuswap region" were synonymouds with "Shuswap territory" (i.e. in that phrase the meaning is re the indigenous people, in the previous it refers to the area around Shuswap Lake; from that meaning the Columbia-Shuswap meaning is derived, i.e. the Shuswap Country + the Columbia Country; all of the region proscribed happens to be part of Shuswap territory, but it's less than a fifth or sixth of it...I have no manoeuvring region on my computer irhgt now ("Zero kb available" thanks to a combination of music file edits and my browser cache...) and I'm not very good with graphics anyway. I'm hoping you may have the time to make the replacement map (which will do for both articles); The most illustrative map currently in the commons right now to use would appear to be this one which you made; other language maps in BC are continent wide but inaccurate because of scale; I think ti's more relevant to make them from a BC map unless their boundaries include adjoining jurisdictions. I also think the relif map is far more relevant as a locator-map for all kinds of things the regional district maps are currently mis-used for; RD maps should only be used for towns and communities, and even then they're not how the province is "seen" in the public mind - terrain and/or highways maps are more relevant and easier to understand even for towns and such; but for geographic objects using RDs is utterly ridiculous; RD boundaries are highly abstract and nobody thinks in terms of them (except Wikipedians). Anyway I think there's a Secwepemc map linked in the External links or refs othe Secwepemc page as a refeernce point for their boundaries; if not I'll find one and get back here....if you dn't have the time let me know and I'll recruit someone else...Skookum1 (talk) 15:12, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

Kootenay National Park photo

Those trees were not killed by Mountain Pine Beetles. The area in the photo was a prescribed burn. Although Parks Canada may have been trying to slow the spread of M.P.B. with the burning, those trees are red because of fire. Hi Qyd - map tweak needed

I see you're semi-retired but don't mean to ask much; you're the author of the main Regional Districts outline-map, and tehre's a change on it as of Dec 1 2007 - the Dease Lake area was added to Kitimat-Stikine and is no longer in Stikine Region (which now doesn't actually touch the Stikine River...). I looked at the RDKS website but their own map is barely a cartoon and doesn't show the specfiic boundary; I suspect it may simply be the completion of the 58th Parallel conneced the Stikine Region/RDKS division and the NRRD/PRRD division; not sure where to look; for corroboration of the change see the BCGNIS ref on Dease Lake, British Columbia. If you can fix it, probably a good thing; the RD map has been mis-used quite a bit, also, e..g on Abbotsford, British Columbia somebody had coloured in the whole FVRD and labelled it "Abbotsford", ditto with similar cases elsewhere....I simply removed teh Abbotsford map, thinkign someone will come up with the push-pin....is that done by some kind of lat-long placement on the base RD map, by the way? I'm wondering if the same principle can be applied to the terrain basemap I've used on things like Clear Range, i.e. for geographic and park articles....Skookum1 (talk) 02:02, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

They can be used but it's rather complicated; orthographic projection maps are more easily used with pins. I won't have time to edit the rd maps for now, sorry.--Qyd (talk) 02:56, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

I noticed that you removed the unreferenced tag I added to Fernie Alpine Resort with the comment, "does too" [1]. I've restored the tag, because the article has none, nor ever has that I'm aware, only external links.

Vancouver maps

Hi Qyd, I was trying to replace the Vancouver maps you made with SVGs of the same thing... I finished the map, but I've been trying to get it to work with your dynamic map template on the Vancouver page. I copied it and made a new template at Template:Greater Vancouver Area Map SVG. The map is to the same scale as yours except I've moved it over some to put the large map of BC on the left hand side. Because of this, the template labels no longer line up with the map, as you can see. I thought it would be a matter of just changing the "left" numbers in the template to move the labels over, but that doesn't seem to work. Do you know what I'm doing wrong? For some reason, the map is displayed from the doc subpage (noinculde the actual map), which is not updated unless you save the changes. Although, it makes no sense to display it from the doc, as it would work just as well from the main template page. Kaskapau

Hi Qyd - I notice that in your recent expansion of Kaskapau Formation you added {{geology-stub}} to the paleo-site-stub that was already there. You don't need to do that - {{Paleo-site-stub}} already categorises stubs into a subcategory of Category:Geology stubs, so the geology stub is redundant. (There are proposals afoot to make a series of specific regional geology stubs like Canada-geology-stub - it will make sense to add them if they get made, but not the general geology one). A fossil would definitely be paleo-stub with redundant geology-stub. A geological formation is only subordinate paleontology, and primarily stratigraphy. There's no {{stratigraphy-stub}} yet, so geology-stub is much closer to the article's subject than paleo-stub (fossil content is just a small part of the subject). Yes, a regional division of geology-stub is warranted in my opinion. Also, considering the existence of thousands of well defined geological units, {{stratigraphy-stub}} might be needed. --Qyd (talk) 01:00, 10 February 2009 (UTC)

Rambling questions about pushpins on conic maps

Hi Qyd, here is a series of questions/comments which I'm going to also ask Blofeld to have a look at here:

Background: I'm trying to work out a reliable method for placing pushpins onto large area maps that use other than orthographic projection. This is of interest to me since being Canadian I notice maps all the time that are badly skewed, since many provinces have such a large north-south extent. {{Location map skew}} provides a partial solution but does not adjust the y-axis location of the pin for curving lines of latitude. I'm trying to work out a template, Location map conic maybe, that does the math to a reasonably accurate degree.
Question 1: What projection does File:Census divisions BC.png use? Is it Lambert conformal conic? If so, any idea what "standard parallels" were used to create it?
Question 2: Looking at the Lambert conformal conic projection article, any idea what the "reference latitude" and "reference longitude" are? The article doesn't explain and neither does the Wolfram page the equations were copied from. I'm kinda guessing it would be coords of a point at the centre of the map, or the point where I decided to push down on the globe to flatten out the map. Generally this would be the centre of the map in question - but of course not if you cropped a larger map.
Question 3: More of a ramble actually, I'm noodling around with the question of how to discover exact map extents, see for example this test page, where I took an existing map and rotated it. I need to discover the map extents now. I'm thinking that I can do this by setting up four linear equations based on the pixel locations and geocoords of four arbitrary points on the map. There are four unknown variables, scale-factor in X and Y, "skew" factor in X (lines of converging longitude), skew factor in Y (curves of latitude). I would likely seed this with an initial estimate of the map extents. Just asking for your general comments here, I'll hack at the math on my own.

Q1: Might be Lambert azimuthal, I don't remember what projection I used.

Q2: the reference Longitude would be the vertical meridian (not necessarily at the center of the map (in the case of BC map it's the 120th meridian, at the east of the province. Reference Longitude would be the strait parallel (the other ones being curved), usually it's the equator.

Q3: easiest procedure would be to crop map images so that points of known location are located at the margins. In the absence of that, I used trial and error. Math would be nice. --Qyd (talk) 20:38, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

Maps are constrained by the templates that use them and the template method to derive pixel placement from lat/lon parameters, except in the cases where people use the xpixel/ypixel method to place locator pins onto proper conic/equal-area maps. The lat/lon method works fine for orthographic maps of small areas, but fails for placement on maps of large extent, where equal-area projection is important for visual display of the map - curving latitudes and converging longitudes. This is what I wish to solve and forgive me if I get the terminology wrong! Comments to Qyd:

C1: Oh thanks then, another candidate for projection math. ;) Your map looks close enough to what I see in my atlas, noted as conic projection, that I think I'll proceed on that track. It has the more explicit math for my approximations.
C2: On my test page, I canted the base map so that east and west borders were symmetrical, and visually the longitude lines were balanced, so the vertical meridian is <back of envelope unavailable>. I'm a bit doubtful when you say that it's at W120 on the BC map, since in both your and Blofeld's version there is a definite tilt at the east border of ~10 pixels at least. This leads me to think that an extra variable called "cant" may be needed, indicating how badly the latitude curves are tilted to the right or left side of the map.
C3: Yes indeed, I followed the margin-checking method. However this all goes out the window for conic maps. The left-extent at the top of the map is not the same as the left-extent at the bottom, the top-extent at the right/left sides is not the same as at the middle. Curvy/converging maps depicted in a square image is non-working as far as lat/lon pins which calculate by scaled pixels. Location map skew got halfway there but didn't fully address the issue. While I do respect the T&E method, I also think there should be a linear equation method to do it. Do you guys know any geodeticists?

Hi guys; sorry to lurk, it's just your both on my watchlist - have you seen LRDW Data Store Atlas of Canada datasets, free of charge - "GeoGratis". Also note all the interesting contents on this page (note third entry especially) and you must already know about GeoBase and there must be a way to parse for topographic and terrain and geological maps within Atlas of Canada. Figured the datasets might be of use to you both, I don't hve the patience to learn map generators/viewers but sure can think of lots of applications for them (mostly local insets of given areas, some on certain themes....).Skookum1 (talk) 03:13, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

I noticed you undid my edits. Your edits reflect the start and end points of the road, are you sure this is how it is supposed to be? I was just following the precidence I seen on other pages. I see absolutely no sense in linking the closest numbers. The articles are about real places, they should reflect the actual subject, otherwise it would be just accounting. Nice work on the overhaul, by the way, congrats. --Qyd (talk) 01:34, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

There was a movement to delete all anvboxes and replace the information with ine from within the navbox. The proposal to delete the navboxes was rejected though; the navboxes list the routes alphabetically/numerically. I can see why an editor would want to browse through articles numerically. But no reason for a user to browse this way. A reader would rather want to follow a route composed of more than one highway. It would make sense, for this scenario, to link roads that are physically connected. And we write the articles for users. --Qyd (talk) 02:38, 6 April 2009 (UTC)

Infobox Access Route Lists

Hello, just to let you know that I revised the access route list for Lachine, Quebec. If you check out Sherbrooke and Vaudreuil-Dorion, Quebec, you can see why it's probably a better option and makes the infobox mercifully shorter. The reference attached pulls the text lines together a bit, but this does not translate to printed copy at least. Please feel free to respond to me about any concerns you may have.
