Kannada literature, 1600–1900 CE[edit]

Thanks for your comments. As the main author of the article, I intended to cover the entire Kannada speaking region (Kingdom of Mysore, Kingdom of Keladi and other areas) prior to the advent of mature Modern literature. Given this, and having read the article, what do you think would be the appropriate name for it: Kannada literature, 1600–1900 CE or what it has been reverted to now. Your opinion helps.Dineshkannambadi (talk) 17:17, 26 December 2008 (UTC)

Congrats for make Vithoba a FA. BTW, given the current contents of the article which have only been copy edited/improved and not switched, what in your opinion would be the correct title for the article above? Your opinion is important, so please do make a mention on the PR page. Some choices I can think of are: what I had as of Dec 16, "Kannada literature, 1600-1900 CE" which is not geographic specific; OR something more on the lines "Kannada literature in the Kingdom of Mysore and neighbouring states" etc. Best wishesDineshkannambadi (talk) 02:47, 10 January 2009 (UTC)
Actually, their earliest inscription itself is from around 1551 CE. The geneology prior to that is unclear though later literatures and manuscripts trace the family rulers to 1399 CE. This is quite common with Indian kingdoms actually.Dineshkannambadi (talk) 15:43, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

I hear Vithoba has been successfully promoted to FA status. Your persistence has made Vithoba a FA. Good work. Keep it up. KensplanetTC 04:57, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

Belive me it is a run around :(( if it is a typical western subject matter, I dont think people have to go through all this trouble but anyways I am working on Aiyanar right now, it is interesting how this deity is getting fused with Ayyappa who is already fused with Shasta and as the son of Harihara. At least we are living this moment of metamorphisis. My wifes family members formerly Aiynar devotees have ended up building a typical South Indian style (not Keralite) temple for Ayyppa in Toronto. I will include a picture of that beautiful temple in the article eventually. Ayyappa article is a mess though. Taprobanus (talk) 05:57, 31 December 2008 (UTC)
I completed Sasta as part of completing the Aiyanar article. Please take a look, when u have time. I had no idea about this deity or even Aiyanar while growing up, all waht we knew were trimurthy and the associted lot. U live and learn :))Thanks Taprobanus (talk) 06:17, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

Hello, Redtigerxyz. Thank you for pointing out your copyright concerns with File:Ayyappan.jpg. A type assessment or downgrading[edit]

Hi, sorry about this. But, we do not assess or downgrade an article alone as far as GA/A/FA etc. are concerned. A single user from assessment department marks upto B for an article. For higher grades there is review/removal-review. So, I have undone your reassessment for Kadamba Dynasty and Culture of Thiruvananthapuram. If you think these articles do not deserve their current ratings, you can file GAR. Hope you appreciate the issue.--GDibyendu (talk) 14:09, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

Krakatoa[edit]

A large amount of the text in the article has not been tied in with any form of reference or citation - which is why the tag was there - SatuSuro 05:20, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

There is a problematic distinction between trying to get the editors who have been slipping in unattributed material over time - versus a general article tag at the top - I would defer to a general tag on the basis that to put cite needed throughout the article can constitute nuisance value (every sentence with a citation tag is not exactyl standard practice) - it was all through the original article - a problem that I think is generally addressed by a single tag SatuSuro 05:28, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

Being the initiator of the Karakatoa category and split - I would argue against a DYK - the attraction of childish vandalism is enough without having that sort of exposure while it is still such a mess from the split. A number of other issues arise and I can explain if necessary SatuSuro 05:35, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

Originally the Krakatoa article was one - and getting long and having incremental unattributable material. The Krakatoa category was created yesterday or so - and split yesterday was Krakatoa and 1883 eruption of Krakatoa - as well as the Krakatoa in popular culture into 2 separate articles - so from 2 into 4 - there is a lot of tidying up to do SatuSuro 05:56, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

Thank you for the kind suggestion of a DYK, I think DYK is better served highlighting new articles and recognising the editors that make them not an admin doing maintance stuff. Also I agree with SatuSuro this was only a split to tidy an excessively long article that was getting more wayward there isnt any new content and there are significant portions that need to have sourcing addressed. Ramakrishna in Shaktism[edit]

Got your point, Redtiger but I respectfully disagree. Ramkrishna believed in Kali as the supreme being, yet he was a leading proponent of Advaita and ishta deva theory; therefore, his views are not the same as the Kalikula school which believes Kali alone to be the supreme being; In addition, he did not believe in the left hand practices of some followers of Kalikula; therefore believing in Kali and being orthodox are not incompatible.

Hope this clarifies. Iskcon site was cited to state generally known facts; about four branches of Hinduism fact that they believe in Gaudiya Vaishnavism is irrelevant, if general statements about Hinduism are true; i.e., there are shaiva, vaishnava and shakta schools.

Hello, I have received the mail giving the permission to use the pictures (with acknowledgment, which we anyway do in the image page). In fact, they have not put any restrictions on the images related to Vithobha, Trailanga Swami to use, they have sent a generic mail saying that we can use the images from the journal for educational, non-profit purpose like on wikipedia. I will upload the pictures tomorrow, Will be busy today. Just thought will intimate this., Thanks. --Nvineeth (talk) 14:40, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

Done! See Talk:Vithoba. Can you also share your opinions on the Ramakrishna article, You are more experienced editor than me, now there is a conflict related to "Biographic Sources". I am not aware of any article where we discuss the Biographic Sources and then write the article! You may go through the older Biographical sources and the critical problems related to this listed here and the newer work. Ming Dynasty[edit]

What are you talking about? 2,000 words equal 10 KB. 20,000 words equal 100 KB. WP:SIZE even states that 30 KB is roughly 6,000 words and 50 KB is roughly 10,000 words. It is simple math. I don't know what "page size" tool you are using, but your math is incorrect (by about 20 KB!). Plus, how did you get 13,562 words when I got 13,206 words? Another thing that doesn't sound right on your end. Can I remove the tag now?--Pericles of AthensTalk 18:22, 1 February 2009 (UTC)

That is really strange; I must be using a lot of incredibly long words in every section and throughout the article to bump it up roughly 20 KB more than it should be. I might have time later to draft a new history section for the Ming as a summary to the existing history article, but this will have to wait for my Han Dynasty project, as I have History of the Han Dynasty up and running already, with more articles to come.--Pericles of AthensTalk 15:36, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
No, you don't understand. History of the Han Dynasty is the separate article for Han Dynasty; it will be summarized in Han Dynasty when everything is finished. It would be ridiculous to create branch articles of branch articles. That's taking it too far, and no, sometimes when an article has to cover a large scope, a large size is justified. Even WP:SIZE says this. Just as long as it does not go over 100 KB.--Pericles of AthensTalk 17:40, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
That's all fine and dandy, and I have been making efforts to shorten the already existent sentences in the History of the Han article, but if you read the article and understood Chinese history, then you'd realize that not much can be cut if the reader is to fully understand the topic. Sometimes comprehensiveness of a topic cannot be sacrificed for mere size concerns, especially since WP:SIZE says, QUOTE: "> 60 KB Probably should be divided (although the scope of a topic can sometimes justify the added reading time)." Well, the scope of both the Ming and Han happen to be very large, since they each cover hundreds of years of history.--Pericles of AthensTalk 17:55, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

India Assessment Dept.[edit]

A few things:

  1. As the time comes closer to when you can be moved from being under the 'new members' list, you're expected to follow the conventions of the department. Please note that the department deliberately abandoned the old system of merely copying and pasting for a reason; please respect that and comply with the current format for archiving requests, which has been used for well-over a year.
  2. While your eagerness to archive old requests is appreciated, it isn't appreciated in so far as allowing other members to check through your assessments before letting them through. This is a phase all new members have gone through. You've done pretty well so far, but that doesn't undermine the need to continue that as a rule consistently across the board. I'll try speed the process up by going through them myself so you can try archiving them properly. As my signature would indicate [as well as the "w/o comment" notes], I've checked through the first 9 requests if you'd like to try your hand at them. :)
  3. You did indicate an eagerness to start an A-class department - the discussion at the noticeboard was since archived due to inactivity. What is up with that? When is that expected to be ready?
  4. Cheers for your hard work, and appreciate if you leave your reply here. On behalf of the dept., Ncmvocalist (talk) 15:40, 8 February 2009 (UTC)
If it's been formally checked, then maybe two weeks afterwards is a good time to archive. If it hasn't been formally checked (that is no signatures), then try to keep it for at least a month from when it was assessed, rather than until the new month begins (which may be too short a period). That's how it's generally worked. Obviously, if there is a huge backlog, we will try to do things quicker to keep up with it :) though that isn't always possible. As for the note at the dept page, it doesn't specify the time period - it's merely to note what will eventually happen to completed requests. Does that help clarify?
I'm not sure what sort of new ideas you're looking forward to; but if there's no other feedback or activity by other WikiProject India members in trying to get things started, then as I noted at the discussion, it fails my criterion for supporting the idea of A-class dept. Ncmvocalist (talk) 18:20, 8 February 2009 (UTC)
Btw, we'd really like to see you have a try at archiving the first 9 requests; in the expected way. :) Ncmvocalist (talk) 14:53, 11 February 2009 (UTC)
Oh yes, I'd appreciate it if you can already start doing this. ~45 assessed requests lying down there just does nothing but adds to any confusion. Btw, let me introduce myself. I'm Mspraveen (talk). I've been here on wikipedia for a decent time already. I joined Ncm as early as September 2007 in helping him maintain the assessment department. Should you need any help with the archiving, just let me know. But, I hope that you can begin with the first few.. ping any of us back once you are done. If all is well, you might as well continue the archiving exercise. Cheers mate, Mspraveen (talk) 15:23, 12 February 2009 (UTC)
It's important you try to get experience following the current format of archiving; it's not merely about copying and pasting - if you want to keep the copy/paste version temporarily while you work on it, leave a note in your edit summary so that we're aware you're working on it and haven't stopped after pasting. ;) Ncmvocalist (talk) 05:54, 15 February 2009 (UTC)
No probs...will let you get on with it. :) Ncmvocalist (talk) 05:57, 15 February 2009 (UTC) Close...

    • A couple more things; we strip all usernames of their colours, designs, fancy fonts etc. as it was/is meant to be a plain archive. The other thing is, if an assessment is requested in January, but it only gets assessed in April, then it gets put in April archive - embarassing for the dept. to take that long, but then at the same time, it keeps the record realistic too. Other than those bits, things looking okay so far. :) Ncmvocalist (talk) 06:35, 15 February 2009 (UTC)

Suggestion[edit]

Regarding your efforts to standardise the formatting for the Indian inventions article I strongly advice you to reconsider putting the ref at the end of the the lines, instead of having it after every sentence for sentences that have the same refs. JSR and I did that (refs after every sentence) to avoid the menace of people coming in later and without even checking the ref at the end of the lines, add a [citation needed] tag, which if unattended to by a Wikipedian who has access to the references (which are mostly books), will cause its deletion. This is all too common on Wikipedia and being a more experienced user u should know. JSR has also voiced his concern on this issue which was earlier raised my Mdw0. See [1] towards the very end of the page. In fact even the List of Chinese inventions which is a featured list has it this way (i.e. refs at the end of each sentence). Zuisen-ji[edit]

Hi, Redtigerxyz, and thanks for proposing my article for a DYK. As you surely noticed, they just had three temple articles of mine in a DYK, so they might not want another in less than a week. We will soon find out :-). BTW, why xyz?

One note (in a completely friendly way): as you noticed, I systematically put citation marks like [1] BEFORE and not after the period. This is because honestly the rule in my opinion doesn't make much sense. Why put it between two periods together with a sentence it doesn't belong to with only a space as a separation? I didn't even dream of reverting yout corrections, but I wanted you to know that what I did I did by choice, and not ignorance. Take care. urashimataro (talk) 02:01, 9 February 2009 (UTC)

Wikiproject India[edit]

Hi Redtigerxyz! I went to the assessment section to place an assessment request there but the amount of crossed out requests made it difficult to see what was still valid and where to place it. I removed the done requests, but only then saw that there is an archive for them (in Wikiproject Biography they are just removed). So I thought I'd spare you the time looking and quickly give you the link to what was removed here. Good thing no edit is lost on Wikipedia :) Thank you! Hekerui (talk) 14:09, 12 February 2009 (UTC)
