My Talk Page
|
I'm an administrator, which means I can delete, undelete, protect, and unprotect pages, edit protected pages, review the text of deleted pages, block and unblock users, and close AfD, CfD, TfD, RfD, MfD, and DR debates. If you need any of these tasks done, or require assistance with a backlog, leave a comment. If you disagree with an action I made, require assistance with bots, need information from a database query, or require assistance in any other area, leave a message on my talk page. For information about me, see my user page. If the icon on the top right of these pages is green, you can also contact me very quickly via IRC. I am ST47 on the Freenode network, and can also be found in #wikipedia. (If the icon is yellow, I'm probably working on a backlog somewhere, but I'm still available.)
Please sign your comments. To make a new section, click here, or just add a section to the bottom of the page. Remember to use a meaningful header.

[edit] STBotI bugCan you please fix your bot to stop treating images tagged with the {{Non-free Wikimedia logo}} template as fair-use images? (They belong to the Wikimedia Foundation.) I previously brought the issue to your attention in reference to a message left on my talk page when I updated a sister project icon used on the main page, but the bot just did this (over the course of seven consecutive messages) when I updated all of the sister project icons. Please also remove my name from User:STBotI/Notified users (as all eight warnings stemmed from this bug). Thank you. —David Levy 23:34, 21 February 2009 (UTC)
[edit] CSDWarnBot Warning for pages tagged by usersThis annoys me, I'm sure you've put effort into this, but I tag a page, copy the warning, go to the users page, click edit, paste the warning, and save, what do I find? The bot has already warned the user: sure maybe not a bad thing to have a bot doing this job for us. But: I think this is a bad thing because, should the user want to ask someone for help about the tagging of "their" page (as they often do), where do they go? To the bots talkpage? here? But you've already told them NOT to come here, new users generally aren't experinced enough to know to check the page history to see who tagged it, and the bot just makes it hard to find a way to the talkpage of an actual user to help the creator, once the page is deleted, they can't. Cheers SpitfireTally-ho! 21:46, 26 February 2009 (UTC)
uh, I (and I suspect?) nor Arx Fortis can code that. As this is your bot, please do consider coding that yourself. Please take a look at Wikipedia:BON#Problem_bot_.28CSDWarnBot.29 and leave further comments there, thankyou SpitfireTally-ho! 05:20, 4 March 2009 (UTC)
If you've quite finished throwing insults around, you may realise that as you are a bot owner, if a complaint comes up on the Bot owner's noticeboard about one of your bots, you have an obligation to respond, five users have agreed that it would be a good idea to put a delay (or make some other modifications) on the bot from the time that a page is tagged, rather then just doing 15 minutes scans. Please try and stay civil as you explain to me why you can't get on and fix your bot, instead of telling everyone else that its their problem and they should fix it, this is your bot, thus your problem, and thus you need to fix it. Thank you for your time SpitfireTally-ho! 14:38, 4 March 2009 (UTC)
[edit] Wikipedia Signpost — 2 March 2009This week, the Wikipedia Signpost published volume 5, issue 9, which includes these articles:
Delivered by §hepBot (Disable) at 20:06, 2 March 2009 (UTC) [edit] Nathowal, Ludhiana district, Punjab, IndiaTo explain my G7 here, the author created an identical article at Nathowal (which I'm still trying to edit so that it doesn't look so terrible, but anyway), without actually moving it. Since I didn't consider that title to be a particularly plausible redirect or search term, I tagged it as G7. Then the user blanked the page and left a comment that he had "moved" it, but of course he didn't (new account). I can tag it with something else I guess, I just didn't think R3 was appropriate. §FreeRangeFrog 03:16, 5 March 2009 (UTC)
[edit] Flying BrandsYou have just deleted a page I was working on, giving the reason "blatent advertising". I did not create the page, and was fully aware that someone had merely copied and pasted promotional text from the companies website, and, I was in the process of editing that page to fit within the guidelines. Had you looked you would have seen that the page was being worked on just a few hours before you deleted it. You should have left a message for me in the page discussion, rather than delete it. Please communicate with me, before deleting any pages I am working on. Please, undelete the page.Danrok (talk) 13:49, 5 March 2009 (UTC) [edit] User:ST47/RFAHey. I was editing the SUPERSWEET entry after months of trying to figure out why it got deleted in the first place. Yesterday I began compiling references for it and doing research on the magazine. [edit] update for ARSbotCould you update User:ARSBot? I was away when we were in process of deciding on a new category name, and it was them implemented. Could ARS pull from Category:Articles tagged for deletion and rescue to do it's work? -- Banjeboi 17:27, 7 March 2009 (UTC)
[edit] On another noteI'm looking at a new bot function that would post a "So you tagged an article for rescue" - type tag to those who added {{rescue}}. Is this a logical/do-able function of this bot or should I look to asking for one? -- Banjeboi 01:26, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

For example, there are 86 articles listed now, but only 33 articles which actually have the template currently. Is there anyway the bot can also remove sections for a talk page when {{rescue}} is removed from the pages? Ikip (talk) 14:46, 23 March 2009 (UTC) [edit] Revisit to ARSBotActually I have been manually removing items so "these entries are never removed" is mistaken. If the bot is to be utilized in this way then we have a subpage at Wikipedia:Article Rescue Squadron/Current articles subpage where removed from currently listed articles can be moved. They should not be deleted or auto-archived as this list is the only record we have of most of our work. -- Banjeboi 02:50, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Minnesota Historical Society images
Mnhs (talk · contribs), a representative of the Minnesota Historical Society, has been uploading images that the Society has copyrighted. They have been tagging these images with {{Non-free Minnesota Historical Society image}} and citing a fair-use rationale in each article for which they are uploading the images. Meanwhile, STBotI has been tagging these images and saying that they're potential copyright violations.
I left a question at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions#Minnesota Historical Society images about this. I'm also asking you because I'm wondering if the code for STBotI specifically looks for a fair use template and a cited article, and if it just doesn't recognize {{Non-free Minnesota Historical Society image}}. Based on the way I'm reading their disclaimer and their responses at User talk:Mnhs, it seems like they're applying the tag correctly and that they are indeed uploading their images correctly. Let me know if this is a fix to the bot or a more complicated issue that needs to be discussed elsewhere. --Elkman (Elkspeak) 22:44, 10 April 2009 (UTC)
- Looks like I wasn't expecting the copyright tag itself to take up more than one line. I've updated the tagging rule. ST47 (talk) 22:55, 10 April 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Speedy deletion of User talk:128.252.121.153
A tag has been placed on User talk:128.252.121.153, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as an appropriate article, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is appropriate, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page and leave a note on [[Talk:User talk:128.252.121.153|the article's talk page]] explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.
For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. 128.252.121.153 (talk) 20:52, 21 April 2009 (UTC)

[edit] User:ST47/notagr again
Following up to this conversation, it seems a number of the older taggings using User:ST47/notagr (like File:Sausman cross 09.jpg, File:Max keiser on a london bus.jpg) were put into red-linked categories like Category:Wikipedia files with unknown copyright status as of 12 January 2009. I think there was a switch in the category naming sometime and the bot may have missed that. You can see from the category tracker that a number of old images are in some weird limbo. Would you mind just going through and tagging them again, resetting the clock so to speak? That or a F4 CSD tag. I think that should take care of them. Thanks. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 01:45, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

[edit] ARSbot tweaks
Hi ST47! More tweaks for ARSBot.
1. First off, we have it so when the {{rescue}} tag is removed from an item it is moved from the current article page to the subpage. Sadly there continues to be some edit warring resulting in multiple removing and relisting the XfD discussion. As a solution can we make it so this listing is moved to the subpage when the XfD discussion is closed/archived instead - I think this will lessen the disruption overall.
2. Secondly, tagged items are presented in the order they have the rescue tag added to them. Instead I think it would be more helpful to list them chronologically by the date they are sent to XfD. In theory this would move items that have less time before the close of discussion towards the top of the list. Obviously this won't be foolproof as not every discussion is exactly seven days but in general I think this will help pre-organize some of the work. We would then add a subsection for each date and sort each listing under the XfD created date. It may make sense to add a line of text for each listing - Nominated for deletion discussion May 5, 2009. or similar.
Are these do-able? As always thanks in advance and let me know what help I can offer to assist. -- Banjeboi 23:12, 16 May 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Account creation system
ST47, thank you for your interest in helping users creating accounts. Your request has been approved. I advise you to read WP:ACCG before you use the system.
At this time, you are allowed to create up to six accounts per day. You won't be able to create an account with a similar name to that of another user. However, if you have reached the limit frequently, you can request the account creator permission at WP:RPE.
Again, thanks for your interest in the account creation system. Join us on IRC at wikipedia-en-accounts and subscribe to the mailing list by going here. Willking1979 (talk) 15:49, 24 July 2009 (UTC)
[edit] DEFAULTSORT
Please take a look at WP:NAMESORT, particularly the sub-section WP:MCSTJR, particularly "accented letters and ligatures should be replaced by their unaccented or separated counterparts".
Also, disambiguation terms (such as "SPD") are normally omitted from sort keys. In particular, in biographies, putting a disambiguation term after the family name causes a disruptive mis-sorting. Studerby (talk) 18:53, 24 July 2009 (UTC)
- oh, and most of the articles you are creating are for living people, any chance you could add Category:Living people as you add the article, when appropriate? Studerby (talk) 19:01, 24 July 2009 (UTC)
- Oops, I wasn't aware of the issues with disambiguation terms - there was one word I was told to ignore, because it was merely a rank, however I wasn't aware of anything else, however I only added, not changed defaultsort keys, so nothing that was working is now broken. I couldn't find a simple way to remove the diacritics. ST47 (talk) 20:37, 24 July 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Pwn Article
Why is the Pwn article still locked after two years? I had intended to add the following
There also an alternative form "own", derived from the original lineage of the word<ref name=omgpwned> [http://www.omgpwned.net/history.php]</ref>. The internet mockumentary series [[Pure Pwnage]] ([http://www.purepwnage.com/ site]), is notable for using this pronunciation.
as I felt it was worthy of mention considering the increasing usage of the word. It is finding its way increasingly into the spoken word.
I'll add on a general note that it's very frustrating to find such forgotten locks still in place years after their implementation. This may seem a trivial article, but I have found it on many important ones as well. It would be nice for locks to have a sunset clause of some description. [edit] WikiCup scoring
I have a question about the scoring system in the Wikipedia:WikiCup. Is it a bot that does it? Can the bot be used to score another contest? I'm thinking of setting one up for Wikipedia:WikiProject Aviation to promote participation and camaraderie. Would I have to set it up exactly like the WikiCup or can I request a few differences? Thanks for any help you can give. - Trevor MacInnis contribs 03:56, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
- It's bot-run. All that is really necessary is that you decide how to score it, and I then write up a bot configuration for that. I am however going to be quite busy and not necessarily in the possession of internet access for the next few days owing to a college move-in, but I will look at this when I get a chance. ST47 (talk) 05:58, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
- Does your college move-in have something to do with your bot not running for the WikiCup? :/ iMatthew talk at 22:03, 22 August 2009 (UTC)
- Thank you for your help. The scoring is very similar to the WikiCup. DYK, ITN, GAN, FAC and other Featured Content (minus Feature Portal) are exactly the same. I've not added mainspace edits because without a bot it would be too difficult to score by hand, but if your bot was to score it, it would be the same as WikiCup, except the only edits to count would be those on pages in the Aviation Projects Scope, i.e. talk page tagged with {{WPAVIATION}}. I've also added points for creating an article (so 5 points for creating an article and putting {{WPAVIATION}} on its talk page). Also .1 points for assessing an article (changing |class= to |class=anything ) and .1 points for completing the B-Class checklist in the {{WPAVIATION}} banner. If the last two are too difficult to code I'd be fine with dropping them. The contest page is at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Aviation/Contest#Scoring if you want to take a look. It's all set up just like WikiCup, with submissions pages and scorecard all set up the same way. Thanks again, for any help you can give. - Trevor MacInnis contribs 22:11, 23 August 2009 (UTC)
- Also, could the scoring be done by bot in conjuction with manual scores? I could hand score the assess and b-class checklists part (if it's too hard to code) and the bot could do the rest. Or would the bot override any edits I made to the score page (Wikipedia:WikiProject Aviation/Contest/History/2009)? - Trevor MacInnis contribs 16:56, 24 August 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Please revise deletion of article "Newtonmas"
Hi, ST47, I have read the discussion after which the Newtonmas article was deleted, Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Newtonmas_(Third_nomination) since you took the final decision. If you consider it more appropriate, I will start a deletion review. I have read your warning, but the deletion review page begs us to start the discussion here.
I understand that the main reason for the deletion was lack of relevance of the term. This is by no means the case as of today, as you can readily check in google: I got almost 2.5 million hits. The term is used by all scientists all over the world. People come to wikipedia to understand and read a serious discussion about it and find nothing. Javirl (talk) 12:45, 27 December 2009 (UTC)

[edit] MediaWiki::Bot
Hi, I've been doing some hacking on the MediaWiki::Bot (previously Perlwikipedia), and thought you might be interested in adding a new feature. In particular, I found it useful to add a "namespace restriction" to what_links_here. This is fairly straightforward, you just append namespace=0 or whatever namespace number to the URL request, but the idea is to keep myself from touching anything that is not in article space. Other than that, I have not had add any new features. I have been using it with some success for transferring numeric data from the French/Italian Wikipedias to the English Wikipedia. Normally I use WP:AWB, but as far as I can tell, WP:AWB can't do this (yet). Thanks to you and your co-authors for the great code. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 00:01, 11 March 2010 (UTC)

[edit] A message to myself?
Hi folks!
I'm hoping that anyone who has left me a message in the last few months and hasn't received a reply will have this on their watchlist and sees this. I've been gone for a while, mostly due to college - I started at an engineering school, and boy have I been busy. Between class, my job at the campus theater, and college life, I just kinda fell off the map. This summer, I'm moving into an apartment with a friend of mine, where I will hopefully have more reliable internet and more space to spread myself out in, and I'd like to offer my services to the community. Now that I have space, I'll be able to have my Linux laptop running 24/7 whatever bots. I'm assuming the community has clotted up around the holes left by the bots I used to run, or simply decided that they weren't needed. If this isn't the case, please let me know. I have all my old code and would love a good project. I also have all the stuff I used for the live election bots, if there's any circumstance for those, don't hesitate to let me know.
I have a new developer who has already in the past 24 hours done an incredible amount of work on MediaWiki::Bot, and I'm hoping to have a finally updated version out soon. As usual, you can get that from the svn at code.google.com/p/perlwikipedia or from the CPAN - look for MediaWiki::Bot. We'll be using the plugin system I prototyped last year more liberally - admin functions are being forked off, so if you need them, all you need to do is install MediaWiki::Bot::Plugin::Admin from your CPAN client. All your bots using MediaWiki::Bot will automatically import from any plugins you have installed, but if you will never need something (like the steward election library, which no one needs ;) ) you don't need to install it.
I'll probably be crossposting this or something like it to the Bot Owner's Noticeboard, or whatever the closest thing is if it's changed since I've been gone. Please don't hesitate to contact me with requests for my old bots to start running again or for their code to be posted. ST47 (talk) 05:07, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Revision to Sid Meier's Alien Crossfire and Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri articles
I noticed that you have revised either Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri or Sid Meier's Alien Crossfire.
I intend to revise those articles following the Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games/Article guidelines. There are more details on the discussion pages of those articles. I'd be interested in any comments you have. It would be best if your comments were on the discussion pages of the two articles.
Thank you.

I am trying to understand how facts are copyrighted. Yes, my source for most of the Bill Phillips article was from the National Academy but I also used some DuPont stories, having never met the guy. I have stripped the page down to nothing but facts, removing most adjectives and adverbs. If I say he went to such-and-such university or the title of a paper was so-and-so just as in the NAS article, how is that copyright infringment? Am I supposed to make up information? Or start with his death and go backwards?

[edit] User block log
My apologies, but I don't understand this block log for User:Cool1019. It says the user was blocked for abuse of multiple accounts, etc., but the user page indicates a new name and contributions resolve to active member User:Charles Edward. Is this a blocked user or something else? Flowanda | Talk 10:47, 18 July 2011 (UTC)
- I have no idea. I wasn't the original blocking admin, I just tweaked block settings, but it looks like Charles Edward is admitting to abusing multiple accounts. If any other admins who blocked him are active, they may have insight, or try AN/I with a link to the sockpuppet case. ST47 (talk) 06:32, 20 July 2011 (UTC)
- Ahh, I think I got it. this may be more enlightening. The user changed usernames, and then the old username was taken over by a vandal, who presumably chose that username in a (failed ;) ) attempt to trick us into blocking a legitimate user. I didn't realize that username changes left the old username open to squatting, that really shouldn't happen, but I'm sure someone fixed that within the two years since it happened. Hope this clears things up, ST47 (talk) 06:35, 20 July 2011 (UTC)

Hiya! Could you double-check this block, please? I see one possibly accidental page-blanking, and no other problematic edits. --jpgordon::==( o ) 04:51, 3 August 2011 (UTC)
- Hey, ST47. I tried getting in touch with you on IRC just now since you appeared to be online, but didn't get a response. Regarding your block of this user, I took a look at their contributions and it appears they've got a long history of useful edits to the project (link), including some just minutes before the page blanking. They requested unblocking, claiming that the blanking was an accident, and I couldn't find anything to lead to any belief otherwise. I accepted their request for that reason, and because an indefinite block for a single page blanking seemed excessive in any event - especially for an established editor. If you feel this was inappropriate, please let me know. Hersfold (t/a/c) 05:07, 3 August 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Request for Interview Regarding Wikipedia Bots
Greetings ST47-
My name is Randall Livingstone, and I am a graduate student at the University of Oregon, currently collecting data for my dissertation on Wikipedia editors who create and use bots and assisted editing tools, as well as editors involved in the initial and/or ongoing creation of bot policies on Wikipedia. As a member of BAG and the bot community, I would very much like to interview you for the project at a time and in a method that is most convenient for you (Gchat, another IM client, Skype, email, telephone, etc.). I am completely flexible and can work with your schedule. The interview will take approximately 30-45 minutes.
My dissertation project has been approved both by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at the University of Oregon, and by the Research Committee at the Wikimedia Foundation. You can find more information on the project on my meta page.
Please let me know if you have any questions, and I look forward to hearing from you to set up a time to chat. Thank you very much.

[edit] MSU Interview
Dear ST47,
My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.
So a few things about the interviews:
- Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
- Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
- All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
- All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
- The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.
Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name HERE instead.
If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.
Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.
Sincerely,
Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) 07:26, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
