Welcome![edit]

Hello, Sarahmirk, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions.

I notice that one of the first articles you edited was Kelly O, which appears to be dealing with a topic with which you may have a conflict of interest. In other words, you may find it difficult to write about that topic in a neutral and objective way, because you are, work for, or represent, the subject of that article. Your recent contributions may have already been undone for this very reason.

To reduce the chances of your contributions being undone, you might like to draft your revised article before submission, and then ask me or any other editor to proofread it. See our help page on userspace drafts for more details. If the page you created has already been deleted from Wikipedia, but you want to save the content from it to use for that draft, don't hesitate to ask anyone from this list and they will copy it to your user page.

One firm rule we do have in connection with conflicts of interest is that accounts used by more than one person will unfortunately be blocked from editing. Wikipedia generally does not allow editors to have usernames which imply that the account belongs to a company or corporation. If you have a username like this, you should request a change of username or create a new account. (A name that identifies the user as an individual within a given organization may be OK.)

Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your messages on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or ask your question on this page and then place {{help me}} before the question. Again, welcome! Note Sarah Mirk actually no longer works at The Stranger so the COI considerations don't apply. --Dennis Bratland (talk) 22:31, 2 February 2014 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Kelly O[edit]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. This is a notice to inform you that a tag has been placed on Kelly O requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, you can place a request here. reddogsix (talk) 23:13, 1 February 2014 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Kelly O[edit]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Kelly O requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

I have contested the nomination, and tried to put the discussion of her work a bit more in the context of street photography and Seattle music. There are probably other sources we can add as well on these points.--Pharos (talk) 05:46, 2 February 2014 (UTC)

Nomination of Kelly O for deletion[edit]

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Kelly O is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Kelly O until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. reddogsix (talk) 19:52, 2 February 2014 (UTC)

Hello Sarahmirk! If you participate in this discussion I will be there with you. The argument has been raised that the sources you used were either self published or are otherwise not in compliance with Wikipedia guidelines. If you spoke with others there they would help sort this out, and I would also if you go there. Thanks. Blue Rasberry (talk) 20:31, 2 February 2014 (UTC)

Hello, Sarahmirk. You have new messages at Bluerasberry's talk page.
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.

Thanks for your note about sources. This is my first Wiki article, so I can use all the help I can get in properly showing this artist's significance. None of the sources cited in the article are self-published works, though. The artist, Kelly O, is on staff at a newspaper. Most of her work is published in that newspaper, so most of the references point there. This is not self-published work, though, this is a newspaper that has been around for 20 years and has a circulation of 87,000. Do you think I should change the references in some way? Sarahmirk (talk) 20:56, 2 February 2014 (UTC)

I see. Also, although I am not sure we met, I was at the art and feminism presentation yesterday. I am from Seattle and I know The Stranger and the name Kelly O, even though I have not met her. I am posting some comments at the deletion discussion because they might be of general interest. You may talk to me here or there. Thanks. Blue Rasberry (talk) 23:01, 2 February 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for your notes! I will see if I can find an interview or article about Kelly O that helps reinforce her significance. Do you know what time frame I have to work in here? It might take me a couple days to find the right sources to prove her significance and I'm worried the entry will be deleted in the meantime. --Sarahmirk (talk) 23:08, 2 February 2014 (UTC)

February 2014[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, your addition of one or more external links to the page Kelly O has been reverted.
Your edit here to Kelly O was reverted by an automated bot that attempts to remove links which are discouraged per our external links guideline. The external link(s) you added or changed (http://iglooart.blogspot.com/) is/are on my list of links to remove and probably shouldn't be included in Wikipedia. If the external link you inserted or changed was to a blog, forum, free web hosting service, fansite, or similar site (see 'Links to avoid', #11), then please check the information on the external site thoroughly. Note that such sites should probably not be linked to if they contain information that is in violation of the creator's copyright (see Linking to copyrighted works), or they are not written by a recognised, reliable source. Linking to sites that you are involved with is also strongly discouraged (see conflict of interest).
If you were trying to insert an external link that does comply with our policies and guidelines, then please accept my creator's apologies and feel free to undo the bot's revert. However, if the link does not comply with our policies and guidelines, but your edit included other, constructive, changes to the article, feel free to make those changes again without re-adding the link. Please read Wikipedia's external links guideline for more information, and consult my list of frequently-reverted sites. For more information about me, see my FAQ page. Thanks! --XLinkBot (talk) 05:02, 4 February 2014 (UTC)

Kelly O image releases[edit]

For the images, it would be best if she could send an email from her address at The Stranger to wm-nyc @ wikimedia.org, attaching the relevant images, and saying specifically in the email that she wishes to release these under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0.--Pharos (talk) 03:25, 6 February 2014 (UTC)

Offline work[edit]

Wikipedians have a tremendous amount of respect for that majority part of all publication which is not online. If you find a source which is not published online but for which you can still create a citation, you may still cite that. All sources must be reliable sources by Wikipedia standards, but if you find a paper source which is authoritative for what it is, then you may summarize and cite it. Blue Rasberry (talk) 20:42, 11 February 2014 (UTC)

Thanks! It's a tricky situation, so I wasn't sure what to do. But maybe you can help me figure out whether I can cite this source: Someone wrote a review of Kelly O's work in an online-only art magazine on 2010. The magazine is now defunct and it's not archived online anywhere. I contacted the author of the review, but he doesn't have a copy. Since the review essentially disappeared, I assume that makes this a source that I can't cite. If you have any other ideas though, let me know!
