New articles[edit]

Is it me or is new article creation on the rise again?♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:51, 8 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Dr. Blofeld: On rise, sometimes 3 articles are created every minute. I often get surprised too. Those who write about insects or viruses, frequently exceeds 100 articles in a single day. Right now I got at least 400 articles to add as well, just waiting for the right time. OccultZone (TalkContributionsLog) 01:27, 9 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I hadn't heard about the two more passing 1 million. Yesterday was virtually like the 2006-2007 days. All I know is that it's taken far too long to reach 5 million articles. Obviously nothing is more important than quality of articles but in the long term being as broad as possible is a good thing I think. The problem of course is that we lack the editors to expand all of the stubs into decent aarticles.♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:02, 9 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
True that. I've got a few thousands of article links saved to my list, I like to expand them but these days I am more into maintenance tasks. Maybe SAdN is also busy with maintenance task, because many of the pages lack talk pages. Quality yes, we do need more articles. There are a few pages about football, hockey, ice hockey where you will see many red links. Whenever you will search those names around internet you will find more than 4 reliable source. Just have to try. OccultZone (TalkContributionsLog) 10:30, 9 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry Ser Amantio, what was it you were saying about the commons? Has there been another donation or something?♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:28, 14 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Amazing that we now have 21 million files, I remember when we used to have 1 million odd and more articles than images!♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:33, 14 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure about that!! Perhaps if they started running the geograph bot and a bot to upload images from flickr again we'd do it!!♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:37, 14 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Always good to see agreements with institutions like LoC. Do you know how many images we're getting from them?♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:13, 14 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Not bad, it's a start. Imagine how many we could have if we made agreements with things like the Azerbaijani archives and all that though!♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:30, 14 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Look how many Raions of Ukraine there are!! And Ukrainian/Russian wiki seem to have nav boxes for all of them with articles on all settlements in each one!! And most of the Russian ones seem pretty decent! The average one looks like this Scary isn't it!♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:56, 1 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Our coverage of Russian towns is pretty decent thanks to Ezhiki, Ym and a few others. Ukrainian cities are OK but we're missing most of the articles on villages as we are with Russia, so naturally it amounts to the majority of settlements still missing. I created one as an example Template:Shakhtarsk Raion and stubbed a few. And most of the raions are still stubs, the way I left them after I created them. Sometime I might resume with those Turkish stubs..♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:15, 1 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I've been enjoying the usually nice weather here but today was the first day in like 6 weeks that it rained and felt cooler. I always prefer editing when its cooler. I've begun learning Spanish again to I'll be translating a few articles from Spanish wiki too for practice!♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:39, 1 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

AWB[edit]

I think everyone had a great time! Hey, if and when you have the inclination, the new WP, Women writers, could use some AWB assistance with project-templating article talkpages. While it would be cathartic for me to do it by hand in front of the TV, I figure it would be much more expeditious using AWB as there are so many articles which fall within the project scope, per Category:Women writers. --Rosiestep (talk) 15:15, 1 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Just learned (Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Women writers#Scope and bot request) there's a bot which might be able to add the project banner, so let's see first if that pans out. --Rosiestep (talk) 15:53, 1 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Cool video; think I found you. :) There are probably other tasks which WOMENWRI needs done and AWB would be useful. I don't know what those tasks might be, but thinking you might know, i.e. has anyone asked you to do stuff for their project which would be useful for WOMENWRI? --Rosiestep (talk) 16:52, 1 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Just a friendly FYI that we're still working through some project start-up questions, which is why I haven't come back with any other AWB suggestions (yet). --Rosiestep (talk) 04:05, 3 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Category:American women writers[edit]

This category is not ready for diffusion. For instance, there is no subcategory for American women who write short fiction. Please hold off on further diffusion of this category. —Stepheng3 (talk) 19:06, 1 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Ser, are you planning on diffusing this? I thought you were doing the opposite and populating the main cat. I think Stepheng3 was correct to remove the diffusion tag, since it seems as though diffusion is not the goal any more--yes? Should we add a non-diffusion tag? Aristophanes68 (talk) 03:55, 3 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Your prolific editing and number of uploads are inspirational.104.37.100.30 (talk) 00:38, 2 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, the cat American women writers does not need to be populated if there are subcategories such as American women novelists. --Rosiestep (talk) 04:47, 3 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Following up on some of your ideas... There appear to be 539 entries at the intersection of Category:American short story writers and Category:American women writers, so it seems reasonable to create Category:American women short story writers and fill it via AWB; and in the process clean out the parent categories. There appear to be 79 entries at the intersection of Category:British short story writers and Category:British women writers, so it seems reasonable to create Category:British women short story writers and fill it via AWB; and in the process clean out those parent categories. What are your thoughts? --Rosiestep (talk) 13:02, 3 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • Now you're removing the template, so I'm confused as to the final goal of this project. Aristophanes68 (talk) 15:28, 3 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedia DC invites revolutionaries, free thinkers, and other sundry editors to a DC WikiSalon[edit]

The WikiSalon is a special meetup usually held during the first and third full weeks of every month, from 7 PM to 9 PM. It's an informal gathering of Wikimedia enthusiasts, who come together to discuss Wikimedia wikis and collaboratively edit. There's no set agenda, and guests are welcome to recommend articles for the group to edit or edit on their own.

If you're coming by Metro, the closest station is Dupont Circle (on the Red Line). If you're driving, a lot of parking opens up downtown after 6:30 PM, so finding a parking space (even a free one) should be easy. Once you've found the building, go to Cove on the second floor. We will be in the conference room.

When: Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM

Where: The Cove, Dupont Circle, 1730 Connecticut Avenue NW, 2nd floor, 20009, DC

Parent cat?[edit]

Hi, long time.

Why are you adding the "American films" category to articles which already have an "American XXX films" category? (See Cat Ballou for an example of what I'm referring to.) Surely "American films" is the parent category of these cats, and does not need to be added? I'm confused as to why you are doing this. BMK (talk) 06:14, 15 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I note here that you plan to resume making these edits in the morning. Please note that AWB is very specifically not to be used for controversial edits:

From "AWB - Rules of Use"

3. Do not make controversial edits with it. Seek consensus for changes that could be controversial at the appropriate venue; village pump, WikiProject, etc. "Being bold" is not a justification for mass editing lacking demonstrable consensus. If challenged, the onus is on the AWB operator to demonstrate or achieve consensus for changes they wish to make on a large scale.

The addition of a parent category to an article which already contains a child category is very clearly "controversial", and, while a few editors at the Film Project may be egging you on, Wiki-wide consensus is opposed to these edits. If you persist in using AWB to make these edits, I will not only revert them, I will ask for your AWB privileges to be revoked due to misuse. Please consider your next course of action carefully. Proposed deletion of Alfonso N. Diaz[edit]

The article Alfonso N. Diaz has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unsourced BLP.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. I saw your edits in James Ben Ali Haggin. Would you like to join the discussion on the article about his father? There is a serious deficiency about sources, I believe, which affects the reliability of the information in both of these articles. Regards. --Why should I have a User Name? Megachile brachysoma[edit]

Great job on Megachile brachysoma and other bee article talk pages. Could you teach me how this is done?--DThomsen8 (talk) 00:19, 6 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Sure. First question - do you have AWB access? --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 00:21, 6 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
OK - you do, I see. Here's what I do to mass-tag articles like I did:
  • Step 1: Using AWB, I set "Source" to "Category" (usually "Category (recursive)" for ease of access), and "Links on" to whatever category of stubs I'm looking for. (In this instance, it was "Bee stubs".)
  • Step 2: Under "List" on "AWB", I select "Convert to talkpages".
  • Step 3: "Filter". Weeds out duplicates, in case any show up.
  • Step 4: Under "List" I choose "Save list", which saves the list as a document on your computer.
  • Step 5: I create (or use, usually) a page in my sandbox, using the saved list. (If it's very long you may have to break it up into two or three pages.)
  • Step 6: Using AWB, I set "Source" to "Links on page (redlinks)" and "Links on" to whatever the name of the sandbox page is.
  • Step 7: Once the redlinked articles have come up, on the "More" tab in AWB, I click on "Enabled" under "Append/Prepend text" and fill the box with whatever template stuff I want. I choose either "Amend" or "Prepend" (the latter works better, I think - less extraneous whitespace.)
  • Step 8: On the "Skip" tab, I make sure that the button at the bottom, reading "Exists" under the header "Page", is clicked. This will skip all existing talkpages. (Shouldn't be any, but just in case.)
  • Step 9: I create an edit summary and begin editing as I normally would.
This is what I do. I'm sure there are other ways to do it, but this is the one I've jury-rigged for myself over the years, and it seems to work.
Hope this helps!--Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 00:42, 6 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Cat. for James Weldon Johnson[edit]

You replaced the category "American poet" with "20th cent. American poet". Fair enough, yet the article correctly states "Johnson's first success as a writer was the poem "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing" (1899)". So that doesn't quite work out, does it? S. J. Rozan[edit]

Hello! I have seen your addition of the Category "20th-century American poets" for this writer. I do not think that is applicable for this person. First, her initial public posting of haiku is from 2003 or 2004, so that would not be 20th-century. Also, she is not primarily a poet, but a writer of crime fiction and thrillers. There are some Washington articles and categories tagged with Oregon as well, but I think I'll catch most of them. Also, I'm curious about the redirects you are tagging, I think most of them make sense, but at WP:ORE it might be a little unorthodox but we tend to only tag articles that might be worthy of their own article one day. So redirs from alternate names don't necessarily need to be tagged. Thanks for all your hard work. Cheers! Valfontis (talk) 23:01, 15 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, can you talk page tag the articles I've started to date like this and create some of the missing Czechoslovak film genre cats red linked in various articles? Will probably create the remaining films tomorrow.♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:24, 11 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Ha it seems you beat me to it! Great minds think alike! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:25, 11 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like you got 'em all! Thanks. I've gone back and added film posters. I've added a cast section and more crew to the first one but it takes a lot of time. There's a huge amount missing for general Czech and Polish films and actors/directors I think. It's a good thing long term I think to have entries for them, but it would be better of course to have Czech speakers on board expanding them. At some point, no doubt some will be expanded.♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:31, 11 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

No idea, sorry for the delay, just been jazz pianoing. That's all for now I think, I'll probably do the rest tomorrow.♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:56, 11 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Resuming now, watch out for red link categories!♦ Dr. Blofeld 22:31, 11 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Done, but realised I forgot to change the decade for the general genre cats by decade in my coding. Can you fix the 40s and 50s ones? Cheers.♦ Dr. Blofeld 23:07, 11 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Nice one! Thanks!♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:16, 12 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Oh there's still tons missing. I did start creating lists by year for Brazilian films in the summer. Sometime I intend clearing a few filmographies. Same with Argentine directors again. None I can think of at the moment. It's better in the long term producing them with a coded template like User:Dr. Blofeld/Sandbox Czech film I think to contains more facts.♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:21, 12 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You could resume with User:Calliopejen1/Morocco, we reached Errachidia I think. All one sourced list which makes creating easy. A lot of province templates still need to be made though but you just have to copy and paste the ones from that page not yet actual templates into a nav template. A good example of an article is Oulad Nacer.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:16, 12 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Just uploaded a new image of Ronald Radd, replacing the tiny px one I uploaded in 2007 which was all that was available at the time!! Now google image him! Just goes to show you that even in 2007 the Internet was in early days still!♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:14, 21 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Tis alright, I'll fix when I add a ref afterwards.♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:11, 22 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Seasons greetings! Can you tag the article talk pages with the architecture/historic tags like this? I've done the first two.♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:58, 15 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Gracias.♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:47, 15 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Can you tag all in the template I created with the tags in Talk:Seviştiğimiz Günler? ♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:57, 18 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Just spotted that the filmography is missing his earliest, I've got another 8 movies to create now!♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:59, 18 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It's OK seems those were films he wrote not directed so I've left them.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:05, 18 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Just noticed they're all missing Category:Turkish films. Can you add that to them all?♦ Dr. Blofeld 23:24, 18 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Are you planning to create this category? Category:Cedarville University was perfectly acceptable. Choor monster (talk) 14:41, 15 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Discographies[edit]

Talk pages for discography articles should be tagged with {{WikiProject Discographies}} not {{WikiProject Albums}}. Thanks. --StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 20:42, 18 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Also, I don't think you need to add "auto=yes" to the project tag for albums. Its use is primarily done by bots which will add the auto-assessment for articles that have been tagged with an album stub template within the article. Since you are not adding an assessment, it certainly isn't necessary. Thanks. --StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 21:43, 18 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
If you were adding a stub-class assessment without looking at the article that would make sense, but simply adding a project banner doesn't require any auto designation. I wouldn't want a fully automated bot to do that either. What happens is that another editor who comes along and rates an album article as stub-class without removing the auto designation will get the page incorrectly categorized as Category:Automatically assessed Albums articles. Thanks. --StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 21:58, 18 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I appreciate that and the work you do. Just want to limit the amount I do. One of these days I'll get and keep that total of unassessed album articles under 30,000. :) --StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 00:42, 19 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

We had decided[edit]

to pipe (? a new term for me) our WPA muralists as {artists} because many of them were more than just painters - printmakers, etchers, sculptors and more. But it was nice seeing you around. Einar aka Carptrash (talk) 15:55, 20 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. Its always nice to have extra "eyes". ```Buster Seven Talk 17:21, 20 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Ah!!! Pipe. new term for me too. I was calling it "Bar". ```Buster Seven Talk 18:36, 20 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I don't mind changing them, if you have not already done it. As you can see we are setting the stage for about a million artist stubs down the line. But first, there are a lot of these murals, probably images will be our next concern. It's always something. Carptrash (talk) 18:15, 20 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Missing fellows[edit]

Given your interest in biographical articles, I wonder if you can start some of the redlinked fellows listed at Category talk:Fellows of the American Mathematical Society. You patrolled (and categorised) those I started from the list. Solomon7968 04:57, 21 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Tagging misfire?[edit]

Not sure how you managed to do this, but that article has no relevance to aviation. :) Lukeno94 (tell Luke off here) 22:36, 21 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Same with Ford NAA tractor. I removed the aviation template. Nyth83 (talk) 13:21, 22 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation link notification for December 24[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Sylvia Schlettwein, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Omaruru. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Ho ho ho[edit]

and do not overlook the highly important theological implications here. Enjoy, Einar aka Carptrash 19:12, 25 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
And I have not idea where the Punjabi footnote is coming from. the Punjab, perhaps?

I peeked around a bit and found the source of the footnote too. And figured you knew all about it. Life is supposed to be interesting. Carptrash (talk) 19:21, 25 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

20th-century Spanish poets[edit]

Christmas stocking present

Hi. I created Category:20th-century Spanish poets and started populating it, but AWB would be faster. Category:21st-century Spanish poets would probably make sense. Thanks. --Rosiestep (talk) 19:28, 25 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Couldn't resist... added Category:21st-century Spanish poets to your Christmas stocking. :) --Rosiestep (talk) 19:35, 25 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! --Rosiestep (talk) 03:08, 26 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Tagging NRHP[edit]

You tagged Talk:Natchez Trace Parkway Land Conveyance Act of 2013 with wikiproject NRHP. It doesn't seem to apply, but am I missing something subtle? I've removed the template for now. Generic1139 (talk) 16:33, 26 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Same with Margaret Carnegie Library. What selection criteria are you using? Generic1139 (talk) 17:57, 26 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like 50 or so where tagged at about the same time. I'm working though them, you found more articles that actually needed tags than ones that you tagged incorrectly. Also, many of the articles you found needed cleanup of one kind or another, so overall it was a good thing. Thanks. Generic1139 (talk) 18:09, 26 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

wp:AVIATION tags[edit]

I have noticed that you are tagging many article with the Aviation projecttag inappropriately. Please ensure than any tags you placefor projects are appropriate.--Petebutt (talk) 18:46, 26 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Uh?[edit]

I don't think this should really be in the Schools wikiproject? DS (talk) 04:37, 27 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

A kitten for you![edit]

I'm helping a group of editors coordinating around Wikipedia:WikiProject New Zealand/Requested articles/Craft and I've seen you make quite a few good edits to the articles they've been working on. Thank you for your help. Having lots of editors pitching in here and there really helps projects trying to create great content.

Stuartyeates (talk) 07:39, 29 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi[edit]

Please take a look at the articles Carolina Neurath and Karolina Olsson, much appreciated. Regards,--BabbaQ (talk) 23:22, 29 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Template:CR Vasco da Gama squad[edit]

The template will be deleted because there is {{Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama squad}} which can be moved to {{CR Vasco da Gama squad}}. SLBedit (talk) 02:41, 30 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hyperword Deleted[edit]

I just tracked down and uninstalled the offending plugin Hyperword. Thanks again

Cheers,

Darrell

New Year[edit]

Have a good one! Do you think by this time next year we might actually pass that 5 million mark? Been a long time coming!♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:24, 31 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Looking at the graph I think we were on about 4.4 mill this time last year so if things go strong this year we might pass it late next year. I'm sure as things start to get beyond 4,950,000 we'll see great growth. Obviously there's still tens of millions of notable articles missing, not to mention all of those "hidden" entries you could write about like Orange production in the Province of Seville etc! Turkey especially always strikes me as a country with a huge bulk of missing content. I think Russia and China in terms of townships and villages, geo features and general biographies though would be one of the countries with the most missing content.♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:37, 31 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

India does already have a lot of articles though, especially on films and villages! I'm sure India and Pakistan will increasingly see more quality editors, I've noticed it in the last year or two for film especially but I think we'll also see a lot of poor English speaking people coming online which might need to be looked at. Gradually we are seeing people from some of the less anglo centric countries appearing on here, of late I've noticed an editor from Malta of late doing some good work like Fortifications of Malta.♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:49, 31 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
