BS Stuff[edit]

Once again, someone disagrees with my interpretation of our very loose guidelines. Now I don't mind when two users like WJBscribe and Kathryn_NicDh%C3%A0na, but they've taken the disagreement and posted negative comments over at that RFC.

So ... could you please weigh in one last time ... new barnstar or a wikiproject award Wikipedia:Barnstar_and_award_proposals/New_Proposals#The_Copyeditor.27s_Award. Thanks. --evrik (talk) 22:56, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

Hello,

you appear to be the creator of the "Mahjongg" style Wiktionary logo. The copyright situation of this logo is currently unclear. Please contact me under erik AT wikimedia DOT org so we can try to resolve this; what is needed is a formal transfer of copyright to the Wikimedia Foundation before this logo can be officially adopted.--Eloquence* 05:37, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi. One of the obstacles to adoption of the Wiktionary logo has been concern that the tiles too closely resemble Scrabble tiles and so may infringe on some trademark rights of Hasbro/PB. To eliminate that obstacle, we merely need to change the background color of the tiles. See m:Talk:Wiktionary/logo/Archives/2007#Trademark infringement. Are you able to change the background color of those tiles? Rod (A. Smith) 16:42, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

By the way, wikt:Wiktionary:Beer parlour#More logo conversation has another active conversation about the logo. Rod (A. Smith) 17:48, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

Farewell week[edit]

Hi, hope you are well. I wanted to let you know that I have decided to leave Wikipedia and so this is my last week here. I've found it all very worthwhile, but I feel now is the time to leave, so I'm off to try new things, see more old things, etc. It was great to meet you here and particularly nice of you to consider me a "Wikichum". You have one of the best userpages I think I've ever seen on Wikipedia.

All the best and good luck with whatever you go on to do. Wikiwoohoo 18:49, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

Winter service vehicle[edit]

Hi there. The article has come a long way, and I don't see why it shouldn't pass FAC—I've fixed a couple of typos and such, but since I'm not very knowledgeable on the subject, I don't think I could be of much more help :) The prose looks nice, it's very well-referenced... I hope it gets more participation at FAC. Fvasconcellos (t·c) 19:49, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

Hey, congratulations on the FA—well-deserved. Happy editing, Fvasconcellos (t·c) 16:18, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for your beautiful words and the kind welcome, dear Smurray! It's great to see friendly faces like yours again, and visit one the loveliest userpages and its even lovelier owner :) How have you been these months? We have much to talk, I'm sure ;) Hugs from your friend, Phaedriel - 18:38, 25 April 2007 (UTC)
Aww, so best of luck with your exams, and hurry back, will you, please? :) Regarding my username, of course, it's not like it's a mistery :) I've always felt attraction to names that finish in "iel", for some unknown reason. "Gabriel", "Galadriel", "Uriel", all sound very musical in my ears. When I was trying to come up with a name to register myself, "Sharon" and "SharonK" were already taken, so I remembered an old game I played with an ex bf, Dungeon Siege, were you could get an NPC called... Phaedriel :) I didn't think much at the moment, I simply wanted to make a few edits. Little I knew then that it'd become so identified with me! :) And yours, if I may ask? I always find it very nice to exchange these wiki experiences with my friends! Phaedriel - 19:30, 25 April 2007 (UTC)

Peer review of 1913 Liberty Head Nickel[edit]

Thank you for commenting on the peer review request for 1913 Liberty Head Nickel. In accordance with your suggestion, I've added two examples (cited to Bowers) of how the coin could legitimately have been produced. As for the intro, do you have any suggestions for expanding it? I'm having trouble figuring out how to do so without introducing unnecessary redundancy with other parts of the article. *** Crotalus *** 22:32, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

Winter service vehicle[edit]

I was wondering when the bit about image location was included in the MOS because having all images on the same side is not appealing to me and it's something I can't fix. If I were to set the image size differently in my prefs, I'd get problems with whitespace from clashing images. - Mgm|(talk) 07:47, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

Assistance needed - Re: Previously Failed RfA[edit]

Dear Smurrayinchester,

I would like to ask for your assistance. About 14 months ago, I self nominated for an RfA, which I ultimately withdrew (see here). During that RfA, you lodged an oppose vote, and I have taken a lot of the comments from that failed RfA on board since then. I am now up to an average of near on 875 to 900 edits per year, having only recently got back to the net from health issues (Throat cancer), and I am once again considering attempting a request for adminship. I am writing to all those editors who opposed my original self-nomination to ask them to see if they would be kind enough to review my recent work, and to see whether they consider that I have taken those points from my old RfA on board enough to warrant another attempt.

I am enjoying getting back into the swing of working on Wikipedia again, and looking forward to enjoying many more years of work. I am now using Twinkle and VandalFighter for my reversion work on RCP and CVU, and looking to the future.

Thank you for your time, and for your comments.

Religion and Spirituality barnstar[edit]

It seems like the barnstar that you created almost 2 months ago on Wikipedia:Barnstar and award proposals/New Proposals never gets approved even though everyone supports. To make things more interesting, the page will be gone very shortly. The admins have told us that we no longer need to get approvals from the community before adding barnstars (as I did to the Environmental Barnstar on today). I suggest you to use this time period to put it up as an official Wikipedia barnstar before they raise the requirements again.

Btw, nice userpage.

At the Swedish Wiktionary we would be happy to use the new logo, but we'd need a Swedish version. Since things are quite slow we've decided not to wait. The text would be "Wiktionary" for Wiktionary and "Den fria ordboken" for The free dictionary. If you cannot do it we'll just stick with the old one.

License tagging for Image:Zeichen 241.svg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Zeichen 241.svg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 14:06, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Q-tv logo.JPG[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Q-tv logo.JPG. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. PxMa 16:10, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Q-tv logo.JPG)[edit]

Nuvola apps important blue.svg Thanks for uploading Image:Q-tv logo.JPG. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Featured List of the Day Experiment[edit]

There have been a series of proposals to initiate a Featured List of the Day on the main page. Numerous proposals have been put forth. After the third one failed, I audited all WP:FL's in order to begin an experiment in my own user space that will hopefully get it going. Today, it commences at WP:LOTD. Afterwards I created my experimental page, a new proposal was set forth to do a featured list that is strikingly similar to my own which is to do a user page experimental featured list, but no format has been confirmed and mechanism set in place. I continue to be willing to do the experiment myself and with this posting it commences. Please submit any list that you would like to have considered for list of the day in the month of January 2008 by the end of this month to WP:LOTD and its subpages. You may submit multiple lists for consideration.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:LOTD) 15:29, 17 November 2007 (UTC)

Specifically, you might want to consider not having something like, "VOTE RON PAUL FOR PRESIDENT AND ELIMINATE [...]" which is long and attracts attention on the edit summary page, and makes it look like you are adding that message. Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Henrik online.png[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Henrik online.png. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 17:13, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

AfD nomination of Capital City (The Simpsons)[edit]

I have nominated Capital City (The Simpsons), an article you created, for deletion. I do not feel that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Capital City (The Simpsons). Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time. Speedy deletion of Kersal Massive[edit]

Nuvola apps important.svg
A tag has been placed on Kersal Massive, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion debate, such as at articles for deletion. Under the specified criteria, where an article has substantially identical content to that of an article deleted after debate, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding hangon to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. and-rewtalk 01:19, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Scummy_man.jpg[edit]

Nuvola apps important.svg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Scummy_man.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

Thank you. Project FMF (talk) 22:02, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

Nebulous on hold (GA sweep)[edit]

I have reassessed this article as part of Wikipedia:WikiProject Good articles/Project quality task force. We are currently revisiting all listed Good articles in an effort to ensure that they continue to meet the Good article criteria.

In reviewing the article, I came across some minor issues that may need to be addressed; I have left a detailed summary on the article's talk page. As a result I have put Nebulous's GA status on hold. This will remain in place for a week or so before a final decision is taken as to the article's status.

I've left this notice here because, from the article history, you have been a significant contributor. If you no longer edit this article, please accept my apologies and feel free to disregard this message ;)

Hi.

I see that you have updated this image in the past. I've got a commons account and have uploaded a few images in the past, but I've just spent half an hour unsuccessfully trying to figure out how to update this image on commons. Can you help me out by pointing me towards the info on how to do that? Thanks. -- Boracay Bill (talk) 03:45, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

MSU Interview[edit]

Dear Smurrayinchester,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

 • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
 • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)

Disambiguation link notification[edit]

Hi. When you recently edited Santa's workshop, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Lapland (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Signature tutorial - update?[edit]

Hallo, your tutorial at Wikipedia:Smurrayinchester's signature tutorial is helpful for those who want to tweak their signature, and is linked from Wikipedia:Signatures#Appearance_and_color, which is now Wikipedia Policy, not just a Guideline, but unfortunately its advice is out of date. You show how to use <font>, but WP:SIG says "Avoid deprecated markup such as the <font> tag." It would be great if you could update your tutorial so that editors get help in following current practice. I've raised it at Wikipedia_talk:Signatures#.22Font.22_Deprecated.3F. Signature Tutorial help[edit]

Thanks a lot for your signature tutorial! I have to say it has been very helpful. However, I wanted to ask you what is wrong with this code: <b><span style="font-family:Comic Sans MS, Arial; color:#00FF00;">Tary</span> (Let's talk!)</b> . What I get is this: Tary (Let's talk!) while I am actually looking for the username to be in green with the Comic Sans font and bold and the talk page link to be the usual blue, only bolded. I would appreciate it very much if you could guide me in this. Thanks again! Tary (Let's talk!) 16:12, 9 June 2014 (UTC)

Hi Tary. The tags need to go inside the Tary part, like so: <span style="font-family:Comic Sans MS, Arial; color:green">Tary</span> (Let's talk!), producing this: Tary (Let's talk!). Hope this helps. Smurrayinchester 16:21, 9 June 2014 (UTC)

Signature help[edit]

Hi, You have a really great tutorial on signatures. I've used it to create my design (Cuparsk | الحسين), but when I use the 'signature and timestamp' feature, it divides the User page link and the talk page link and posts them between dates. It shows up like this:

--Cuparsk | الحسين 09:05, 23 December 2014 (UTC)

Can you help me with this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cuparsk (talkcontribs) 09:07, 23 December 2014 (UTC)

@Cuparsk: That seems like a problem caused by including right-to-left Arabic text in the middle of left-to-right. The Wikipedia page on bi-directional text may help you - you probably need to add something called a "left-to-right mark" to the end of your signature. I'm afraid I don't know enough about Arabic to tell you more than that. Smurrayinchester 08:50, 26 December 2014 (UTC)

Private Eye[edit]

Since the full story isn't online, and I doubt I'll be able to find a copy in my part of the United States, would you like to write it up for The Signpost? Unless there's more to the story, your comment says it all and I could just incorporate that into the next ITM. Gamaliel (talk) 20:19, 7 January 2015 (UTC)
