Orphaned non-free image File:HMS Jamaica (Crown Colony-class cruiser).jpg[edit]

⚠
Thanks for uploading File:HMS Jamaica (Crown Colony-class cruiser).jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BencherliteTalk 19:34, 16 February 2011 (UTC)

Sorry for templating, but it has the advantages of being quicker and more accurate than a handwritten note would be. The image was being used in an article about HMS Jamaica and the class article, but both had free alternatives making its continued use questionable. However, if you can think of a way round this, go ahead. Regards, BencherliteTalk 19:36, 16 February 2011 (UTC)

MSU Interview[edit]

Dear SoLando,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your nameHERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar ([[User talk:Jaobar|talk — Preceding unsigned comment added by 35.9.34.167 (talk) 21:32, 22 February 2012 (UTC)

King's Regiment (Liverpool)[edit]

G'day SoLando, I came across King's Regiment (Liverpool) today. I'm very impressed with the article overall, however, I'm a little concerned about the level of citation. It is currently rated a GA/Milhist A-class article, however, I'm not sure that it would meet the current standards for citation that are being applied at Milhist A-class review. I have marked the areas that I feel should have citations added with "citation needed" tags. If you disagree, please feel free to revert. However, if you feel inclined to add more citations, I'd greatly appreciate it. I also think that if you were to add citations where I've marked, that the article would have a good chance at FAC if you decided to take it there. If you are thinking that way, I'd suggest putting it up for another peer review first, just to get some more eyes on it, but after that I think it would be good to go. Anyway, good work on the article. Cheers, AustralianRupert (talk) 00:21, 4 March 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads-up! Very much appreciated! I've been somewhat indisposed for much of the past year, which has greatly curtailed my editing, but I'll see whether or not the content in question can be verified (fortunately I still have the source material!). I'd be thrilled to nominate the article for FAC consideration one day. To be honest, I've hesitated over the years, owing to related articles (like the Manchester Regiment) being in need of a major overhaul. Cheers, SoLando (Talk) 08:12, 4 March 2012 (UTC)

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:HMS Ark Royal (aircraft carrier 1970s).jpg[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:HMS Ark Royal (aircraft carrier 1970s).jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. John of Reading (talk) 21:38, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

(More) I think the second image, File:HMS Ark Royal (R09) at Hampton Roads 1957.jpg, would do just as well in the info box at HMS Ark Royal (R09). -- John of Reading (talk) 21:43, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

File permission problem with File:Max Muspratt, 1917.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Max Muspratt, 1917.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Kelly hi! 08:55, 9 October 2014 (UTC)
