Orphaned non-free media (File:Gonzo 3C 200x300px.jpg)[edit]

Ambox warning blue.svg Thanks for uploading File:Gonzo 3C 200x300px.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Werieth (talk) 17:56, 21 August 2013 (UTC)

Your ymd date format edit in Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Dates and numbers[edit]

Hi. In the edit summary of your edit to Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Dates and numbers you asked me to refrain from making insults. Please be assurred that my remark, that a text variant of this date format is not used anywhere on planet earth (only the numerical form) was in no way meant as an insult. I had not the slightest reason to approach you with aggression, and even if I had, this would not be my style. I saw your original edit as constructive, but not helpful, and I was living under the impression, that text forms of the ymd format are in fact not used in any country. My comment was an attempt to indicate friendliness by being funny in order to reduce any possible "drama" of my reversion. I was not making jokes about you. Still, if this somehow came over as an insult, please accept my apologies. --Matthiaspaul (talk)

Thanks very much for reaching out. As a San Franciscan, my social contexts occasionally draw mockery, and I assumed your remark was another. Best wishes, Startswithj (talk) 23:14, 7 September 2013 (UTC)

MOS discussion[edit]

Could you move your last response to me up to the messages it is referring to so that the previous messages we are referring to are more handy to view? --Bob K31416 (talk) 10:38, 19 September 2013 (UTC)

Yes, I wasn't sure if chronological (place at end) or contextual (place in middle) would be preferable. Help:Using talk pages seems to agree with your suggestion. Done. Startswithj (talk) 15:48, 19 September 2013 (UTC)

File:CD cover for disc 2 of the "Star Wars Trilogy; The Original Soundtrack Anthology" CD box-set.jpg[edit]

Other than mere visual identification, I see no other reason to keep this image, as there is already the vinyl cover art. Also, the re-release is understood without this image. Objecting deletion of this image? --George Ho (talk) 19:53, 23 September 2013 (UTC)

I don't have strong feelings either way for this, thanks. Startswithj (talk) 21:11, 23 September 2013 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use File:Mike Gogulski Headshot.jpg[edit]

Ambox warning pn.svg

Thanks for uploading File:Mike Gogulski Headshot.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Blurred Lines 18:29, 13 October 2013 (UTC)

MOS:COMMA[edit]

You recently commented on the use of commas after dates in MDY format when used as an adjective. I have opened an RFC at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style § RFC: Proposed amendment to MOS:COMMA regarding geographical references and dates with a proposal to clarify the position at MOS:COMMA. Please feel free to add your views. sroc 💬 22:43, 8 November 2013 (UTC)

File:CD cover for disc 1 of the "Star Wars Trilogy; The Original Soundtrack Anthology" CD box-set.jpg[edit]

This image is non-free. One image at the top is enough, as the original edition cover itself is... out-of-copyright due to black background and mere text and logo. Allow me to remove the image? --George Ho (talk) 07:06, 21 November 2013 (UTC)

The image is of an out-of-print CD, and it therefore is a rarity. I think it would be a shame to delete this bit of history from our pages.
By your same logic, would you also be deleting the third image (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:A_New_Hope_2004_cover.jpg) that appears on the article's page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars_Episode_IV:_A_New_Hope_(soundtrack))?
Startswithj (talk) 18:52, 21 November 2013 (UTC)
I already contacted the other uploader about the 2004 CD. I'm awaiting his opinion. George Ho (talk) 20:29, 21 November 2013 (UTC)
Nevermind waiting, this image is nominated for deletion, as well as the other. George Ho (talk) 21:04, 22 November 2013 (UTC)

May I ask how you define "enough" in your original statement, "One image at the top is enough"? Thank you, Startswithj (talk) 21:27, 22 November 2013 (UTC)

Image-request.svg This editor feels that articles are boring without lots of images.

Wikipedia is a free encyclopedia obviously, and it encourages free content and minimal use or reduction of non-free content. About the userbox that you are using, you may want to read the essay Wikipedia:Arguments to avoid in image deletion discussions, and WP:BORING redirects to WP:AADD. File permission problem with File:140-New-Montgomery-Eagles.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:140-New-Montgomery-Eagles.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 14:40, 18 December 2013 (UTC)

Why is this in question? The photographer has declared the photo as Creative Commons Attribution Non-commercial at the following:
I've also emailed the photographer now, and he replied:
"You have my permission to publish the photo to Wikipedia. The image is creative commons, so do as you wish as long as you're not a for-profit company making money directly from it!
"Best,
"Jon"

Possibly unfree File:140-New-Montgomery-Eagles.jpg[edit]

A file that you uploaded or altered, File:140-New-Montgomery-Eagles.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Possibly unfree files because its copyright status is unclear or disputed. If the file's copyright status cannot be verified, it may be deleted. You may find more information on the file description page. You are welcome to add comments to its entry at the discussion if you object to the listing for any reason. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 10:11, 19 December 2013 (UTC)

I've now marked File:140-New-Montgomery-Eagles.jpg correctly as CC-BY-NC; this copy should be deleted. New copy with CC-BY-SA license has been uploaded to File:Eagles-on-Top-of-Pac-Bell-Building-643px.jpg. Photographer and I both dislike Wikipedia's stance for requiring SA over NC, but photographer has agreed to make an exception in this case. Photographer's release statement has been forward to permissions-en@wikimedia.org. Please assist with deletion of old copy (admin privilege required). Thank you. Zeitgeist the Movie editing[edit]

Hello Startwithj,

Just wanted to let you know that Earl King Jr, Arthur Rubin, and the rest of their gang are doing the same thing with that page and the same thing to you that they did to me an others months ago. They are all but certainly paid editors hired to sabotage the page. It is great that you are trying to improve the Zeitgeist:The Movie article.Dustin184 (talk) 16:55, 25 February 2014 (UTC)

Thank you for bringing this listing to my attention, but I already secured via email the artist's permission release, and I forwarded his email to permissions@wikimedia.org on 2013-12-20. I have re-forwarded it again just now. What's the next step (is there one)? Best, startswithj (talk) 02:27, 27 February 2014 (UTC)
