War Requiem

Hi, wouldn't it be best to create another article for the film maybe? It's very crammed down there to place film infobox, film image, cast and all, plus the categories will become too many for the page. From the film article I could send to "Main article" from the plot section to the music theme. So I was thinking to substitute your redirect with the film article, if you have no objection. John Reith

Hi. I am interested in your contribution to the John Reith article having contributed material myself in an attempt to clean it up. What I am most interested in is your comment about the faith of John Reith's father, a minister.

I see that you have made a correction based upon an interview with Reith but it is not clear whether your correction refers to the denomination that Reith belonged to or the denomination of Reith's father.

It was my understanding that the previous text (prior to your edit) was correct because it referred to Reith's father and not to Reith himself.

I followed the links on the Reith article to see where they led (since your edit was made) and unfortunately they now lead to more confusion and I don't know what the answer is.

Because I have a personal interest in setting this account straight having contributed material elsewhere based upon the previous information (prior to your edit), I would like to work with you to determine what the correct version is. Fragilethreads 14:43, 4 May 2007 (UTC)

Reith's father (and Reith himself) were members of the United Free Church of Scotland, which amalgamated with the established Church of Scotland in the 1920s. Subsequent confusion has arisen (almost everywhere, it seems) because the Free Church of Scotland (and the Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland), considerably more doctrinaire organisations, had virtually the same name. It is this one which is regularly used to depict a certain austerity of outlook (e.g. the controversy generated when Lord Mackay of Clashfern, a Free Presbyterian Church elder, attended a Roman Catholic funeral of a friend, against the advice of his church). Reith's own austerity is regularly ascribed to his being a member of this Free Church (notably by John Freeman, in the example I cite) which is incorrect. Reith could not have been eligible for consideration as High Commissioner had he been a member of the (so-called) 'Wee Free'.

My point was to try to clarify that Reith was a member of the established Church and not any other 'faction'. Though I accept his beliefs were considerably more austere than many in the Kirk. I'd add, though, that he frequently decried his own inability to live up to these standards.--Stevouk 22:51, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

Unfortunately your single citation creates more confusion than ever because Reith states that his church does not like being called by a certain name, but it does not mean that it was not known by that name originally. My interest is in the belief of Reith's father, the younger Reith. What was Reith's father a minister of? Your conclusion that Reith could not have held a certain post later in life does not address this problem at all because anything is possible. Reith could have changed his membership, modified his views, anything. But I am addressing the starting point of his birth and his father's belief. A talk show is not a good reference at all and Reith's comments are ambiguous. For instance, the Mormons are not really the Mormons but the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Sometimes groups adopt the popular name (like Mormons) if they can't shake it off. Asa Briggs is a credible historian and is the most prolific and widely respected authority on the history of the BBC who has a lot to say about Reith. Lucerne Festival Orchrstra

Thanks for creating this article. I am wonder that this orchestra is actually formed much earlier then 2003, I think is 1940s something but in some reason the orchestra was dismisseed. And Abbado reformed again. Two reasons there, firstly, I looked up it in somewhere in Wikipedia, but I just forgot it. Secondly, I have a CD which is performed by the orchestra in 1949. You got there first! Mind you, I have been meaning to create the page for over a year. Where did you source your information from? Do you know if the programmes still exist?

I can add a reference which will ensure the page is kept: Oliver Postgate did (some/all of) the animated sections, and this is mentioned in his autobiography.

You may also be interested to hear that I have a copy of the SoBI annual, from 1972?, and also two copies of each of two of the schools' workbooks (unfortunately, heavilly scribbled-in, but then I was only little...)

I'm not sure about the "distinction" between witting and unwitting use of the term Chinaman. I'm not sure how any use could be unwitting; the only sense where that would be applicable would be when someone uses the term "Chinaman" without realizing that some people don't consider it politically correct. I found the book "Sacred Music Drama" (2006) by Carl Gerbrandt, by doing a Google search for text I copied from the article. The section starting with "It was during this battle..." and ending with "...any contemporary totalitarian state" is a match to page 123 of that book. The section "The work was commissioned..." to "...Kirkwall on 18 June 1977" matches page 122. The sentence starting with "Magnus was a twelfth-century earl..." matches the page linked at the end of this article. This may be a good subject to write an article on since it appears to have excellent source material. You might want to read Wikipedia:Article development to avoid these problems in the future. If you do intend to resolve the copyright problems and improve the article, please follow the instructions on the speedy deletion tag to keep the article from being deleted. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of that website's terms of use of its content. However, if the copyright holder is a party unaffiliated from the website's publisher, that copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider verifying that you have specified sources for those files as well. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged per Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion, F4. If the image is copyrighted and non-free, the image will be deleted 48 hours after 19:28, 26 November 2010 (UTC) per speedy deletion criterion F7. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
