Crossbow[edit]

Regarding your short Isle of Wight articles; just make sure to indicate in the article that they refer to a place on the Isle of Wight, and include {{IsleofWight-geo-stub}} at the bottom if they're stubs. That way, you provide enough context.

Cunnan[edit]

Hi Streona, and thanks for the message. Looking at that site, they are definitely using the Wiki software, which is freely available for anyone who wants it. This availability, and frustration with Wikipedia's rules on what does/doesn't belong in an encyclopedia, has led to people setting up hundreds of independent Wikis, many of them hosted on the same server (Wikia) but all of them separate from Wikipedia (some of the best known are Wookieepedia (the Star Wars wiki) and the World of Warcraft Wiki). This means the Cunnan Wiki is completely unrelated to Wikipedia; it just happens to use the same software - it was very good of you to correct the articles there, and hopefully it's appreciated, but obviously we have no oversight there.

As far as content goes, all Wikipedia articles are freely available for anyone to do anything they want with, including copy/change/try to sell/whatever. The only real restrictions are that any derivative work must be released under a similar free license to Wikipedia, and we must be credited somewhere. If the Cunnan site has used Wikipedia articles, or portions of them, they must give attribution somewhere on the site (usually a mention on each page that "this site contains material from Wikipedia..." is sufficient). If not, we can follow this up further as they would be in breach of copyright. Stuff that you've added to their site is licensed under their rules, so that wouldn't be covered. However, I think your note was more concerned with accuracy than plagarism - as I said, we have no say in how they run their Wiki, but from your message it's easy to see why they'd want to host their own stuff rather than fight through Wikipedia policies on accuracy and verification to get it on here ;)

I don't know if "Frontal lobe damage would cause a lack of inhibition in speech and behaviour often associated with pirates." is meant as a joke, but that whole section is more appropriate for the general article on Pirates, than for International Talk Like a Pirate Day. It'd also be good if you could mention the source that you were drawing the information from, so that other editors could find out more about it. If you've got a source, that's great, but this whole section should definitely be moved to the pirates article (or possibly pirates in popular culture, which has a section about piratical speech). I'm watching the page, saw that heading, and stupidly jumped to the conclusion that you had created the header. I just blocked out of reflex. When I went to see what else she had edited that I needed to revert, I noticed that everything looked, well, written by a rational human. Only then did I actually check the text of your message on SineBot's talk, and realize my mistake.

Whilst I am not prepared to go to zxcvbispass user page (which seems to have been especially created to edit the BNP article, especially as zxcvb occur together on the keyboard just as qwertyuiop does, so "sockpuppet" might be more appropriate) to have a discussion with these kind of people (in the words of Woody Allen in Annie Hall or Manhattan "We should attack them with satire and reasoning" "Yeah and take a few baseball bats to put our finer parts of logic across") -should he/she return to this page - this is the answer;

Recent DNA studies indicate that "English" people are descended from various roots, but mostly not Anglo-Saxon. Most appear to be from the stone age people who came after the Ice Age. The Anglo-Saxons do not appear to have wiped out the "Britons", mostly NOT Celts for the same reason, but to have interbred with them. The early Wessex kings had in some cases,very "British" or Welsh names such as Cerdic (which is the same as "Caractacus"), Caedwalla and English names such as "Aethelweah" ("noble foreigner") and Cenwalh ("bright foreigner"). The likelihood is that a small number of Anglo-Saxon men came over on boats and interbred with local women. Th Laws of Ine refer to differing wergilds for Britons as for Saxons. So from their inception the Anglo-Saxons were a mixed race. Alfred the Great was especially open to foreign ideas and sent an embassy to India and explorers to the Baltic. His whole strategy was based upon making piece between himself and the danes at the Peace of Wedmore. Early Archbishops of Canterbury - such as Theodore and Deodatus, were in fact Greek, and Athelstan's court in particular began our proud tradition - until destroyed by New Labour- of protecting refugees (such as Louis D'Outremer). The Early Church decreed that King Edwy's marriage to his foster-sister, Edgiva, was incestuous, due to being within (or in fact at) 9 degrees of consanguinity- which must have made miscegenation virtually compulsory. King Ethelred the Unready in 1002 committed the St. Bric's Day Massacre against "Danish" civilians- which would no doubt make him a hero to the BNP- but which got him precisely nowhere. I am, not necessarily proud of my ancestry, because it is something over which I have no control- but neither am I ashamed. I think Anglo-Saxon culture and language has given the World great cultural and scientific riches- not least the World Language of English and values such as stubborn resistance to fascism, tolerance, broad mindedness and all the things that make us Great that the BNP and their like so despise and would destroy. We have from our beginning been a mongrel race, our language a mongrel language and our culture a mongrel culture. Its called "hybrid vigour".

Hi,

If you're going to prevent the article from being deleted, you need to do more than just post on the talk page. The page is deleted or kept based on the discussion found at the AFD (Articles For Deletion, here). You must make your argument based on our policies, not on bare assertions; in this case the policy is articles for deletion, and the relevant guidelines are at notability for organizations - you should also review arguments to avoid.

The short version is - find press and other media that are independent of the organization, that mention it. Ideally that discuss it in detail. If The Times did an article, you're pretty golden, so long as it's not just a mere mention. Add them to the page, and point out on the AFD discussion that you have done so. One argument to avoid is "torture is really bad, and this organization is against torture, so it's really important". That's one that we see a lot. WLU (talk) 00:27, 23 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Councillors[edit]

From their ranks of up to 55 councillors the BNP have lost a substantial proportion through resignations expulsions and splits. The BNP councillors have particular disadvantages which many other councillors do not have. Instances of various misdemeanours are closely watched by opponents and widely advertised- although all councillors will face scrutiny from opposing parties locally. When the first BNP councillor, Derek Beackon was elected in the Isle of Dogs, local council staff staged a mass walkout. He found himself isolated from officers and councillors, most of whom refused to speak to him at all, making it especially difficult to understand the workings of the council and impaired his effectiveness. Others have had similar experiences, which has often resulted in exceptionally poor attendance records and disillusionment. Some have been obstructed by official actions against them and been prevented from fulfilling their dutues by suspension or by bail conditions. However as the party increases its pool of experienced councillors this could be improved from their point of view, although the actions of existing councillors have not produced any positive role models as yet.

The internal party democracy of the BNP has been criticised by members for giving too much power to the Chairman and for not being widely available for the membership to consult. Others, such as Daniel Kelly in Barking & Dagenham or Angela Clarke in Keighley, have resigned due to "not understanding what was going on" . Some have been suspended from the council. Luke Smith (a Burnley councillor) was expelled for glassing another BNP reveller at the 2003 Red. White And Blue Festival and was banned from being a councillor by the Standards Board for England, following his being banned from football matches for hooliganism. (Luke Smith later hanged himself in 2008).

Smith's uncle Simon Smith was himself suspended for the racialist content of his website, before leaving the BNP in support of Sadie Graham. He said of Luke Smith,(who was awaiting sentencing for beating up a barman before he hanged himself outside the pub).

Others have become disenchanted with the BNP itself. Councillors[edit]

From their ranks of up to 55 councillors the BNP have lost a substantial proportion through resignations expulsions and splits. The BNP councillors have particular disadvantages which many other councillors do not have. Instances of various misdemeanours are closely watched by opponents and widely advertised- although all councillors will face scrutiny from opposing parties locally. When the first BNP councillor, Derek Beackon was elected in the Isle of Dogs, local council staff staged a mass walkout. He found himself isolated from officers and councillors, most of whom refused to speak to him at all, making it especially difficult to understand the workings of the council and impaired his effectiveness. Others have had similar experiences, which has often resulted in exceptionally poor attendance records and disillusionment. Some have been obstructed by official actions against them and been prevented from fulfilling their dutues by suspension or by bail conditions. However as the party increases its pool of experienced councillors this could be improved from their point of view, although the actions of existing councillors have not produced any positive role models as yet.

The internal party democracy of the BNP has been criticised by members for giving too much power to the Chairman and for not being widely available for the membership to consult. In 2007 a leadership challenge to Griffin by Colin Auty ^[2] and previously by Colin Jackson resulted in resignations and expulsions of their supporters and 67 senior activists including many councillors resigning the whip after Councillor Nina Brown claimed that BNP Security had misled her into giving them the key to the home of fellow BNP councillor Sadie Graham in order to ransack it, searching for evidence of her support for Auty's leadership bid. ^[3]

Others, such as Daniel Kelly in Barking & Dagenham or Angela Clarke in Keighley, have resigned due to "not understanding what was going on" . Some have been suspended from the council. Luke Smith (a Burnley councillor) was expelled for glassing another BNP reveller at the 2003 Red. White And Blue Festival and was banned from being a councillor by the Standards Board for England, following his being banned from football matches for hooliganism. (Luke Smith later hanged himself in 2008).

Smith's uncle Simon Smith was himself suspended for the racialist content of his website, before leaving the BNP in support of Sadie Graham. He said of Luke Smith,(who was awaiting sentencing for beating up a barman before he hanged himself outside the pub).

“He was a lovely, lovely lad who, like a lot of people, was just too sensitive to exist in what is effectively an extremely cruel world." ^[5]

John Rowe, a Burnley councillor, has been excluded from meetings due to his bail conditions after setting off fire alarms. ^[6] James Lloyd, a BNP councillor in Sandwell was suspended for not attending enough council meetings. He attributed this to business difficulties following the closure of his pub, a favourite with BNP activists due to his non cooperation with police investigations into repeated violent incidents. ^[7] Others have become disenchanted with the BNP itself. In September 2007, Robin Evans, a BNP councillor in Blackburn, walked out of the party, then wrote a letter to his former colleagues denouncing them as a party of drug-dealers and football hooligans. He remains a councillor, describing himself as a "national socialist". ^[8]

BNP Difficulties with Employment[edit]

The BNP has a track record of thrying to suppress manifestations of Islam. It does not mention this specifically in its manifesto, but it endoeses a book by one of its members entitled "Jihad- Islam's 13oo year war against the West" the final chapter of which propese the "hard choices" to be made to save Western Christian Civilsation. Unfortunately I am not privy to precisely what that might be, but I think we know who it will be hard for. Simone Clarke is a principal ballerina at the English National Ballet and a deputy for the entertainer's union Equity. Her membership of the BNP was unknown until exposed by an undercover Guardian journalist in 2006. Her performances were picketted by anti-fascists demanding her sacking. First Sikh joins Solidarity 20/04/07 Opponents of the Independent Trade Union Solidairit have falsely claimed that it was 'racist'. This is despite the fact that their very Constitution makes it clear that it is open to all regardless of political opinion, ethnicity or faith. Pramjit Sadra explained his reasons for joining Solidarity:- "I have been aware of the shift of work away from ordinary British people which I feel undermines our communities. BNP members have suffered various difficulties in employment.

lobbied for BNP members to be dismissed. In the case of ASLEF v. United Kingdom the European Court of Human Rights overturned an employment appeal tribunal finding, awarding a BNP train driver damages for expulsion. It found that the union were entitled to do so, and that this was not a breach of the European Convention on Human Rights.

In the case of Baggs v. Fudge (2005)UKET, Robert Baggs, represented by he BNP legal officer, Lee Barnes, claimed that he had been discriminated against on the grounds of "religion, or similar philosophical belief" (contrary to the Employment (Religious Discrimination) Regulations 2003, when applying for a job at a G.P. surgery. The Employment Tribunal found that membership of the BNP was not a "similar" belief, and the case was rejected.

Advice from Stuart Chamberlain of Gee Consult, management consultants has been that a similar case might be successful since the removal of the qualification "similar" from philosophical belief by an amendment in 2007. -"Cases concerning claims made by British National Party’s (BNP) members that their fascist beliefs were similar to religious beliefs have previously been decided in favour of the employer or potential employer. However, under the new law, a strong argument could be made to the contrary." ^[12]

However, this has not been tested and there is a clause in the regulations which provide that the beliefs of employees may be required to be in line with the "ethos" of the organisation.

Mr.Redfearn was a bus driver whose BNP membership was unknown to his employers, Serco, until he was elected as a councillor. He was sacked as the employers were concerned that he might endanger their contract with a local authotity to transport vulnerable people from a day centre of various ethnicities. The decision in Redfearn v.Serco (2006 CA) is summarised thus; "where an employee who is a member of a racist group (in this case the BNP political party) is dismissed because of the danger that his continuing employment might lead to violence in the workplace, the dismissal can properly be regarded as being for legitimate health and safety reasons and will not be unlawful race discrimination." ^[13]

Organisations which ban BNP membership

Police ; Membership of the BNP, C18 and the National Front was specifically by David Blunkett, following an undercover TV exposure of racism in a police training centre. Despite this Simon Darby has claimed that the BNP still has members who remain covert. Police authorities have taken this very seriously and Manchester Police Authority have viewed footage taken at BNP events in order to identify off-duty officers in attendance at a BNP St.George's Day rally, wearing BNP badges and T-shirts, with the slogan "Love Britain or Fuck Off". ^[14] A retired police officer, standing as a European Assembly candidate, Inspector Phazey, has said that he was a member in defiance of the prohibition and that other serving officers remained members. He denied that he was a racist or that the police were institutionally racist, saying;

"Of course you heard words like paki and nigger, but it didn't mean much more than someone saying paddy for an Irishman or jerry for a German. It was just the language of working-class blokes. There was a fair bit of leg-pulling but it was never malicious. I remember there was one officer who, whenever an Asian officer came into the room, would go, 'Coon, coon,' like he was making the noise of a pigeon. But it was a joke. It's like saying paddies are as thick as two short planks or jocks are tight-fisted. It was just jokes in the canteen. You'll get that anywhere when you have men in their 20s and 30s together." ^[15] A Police Community Support Officer, Ellis Hammond, was found to be a BNP member after he was discovered stockpiling weapons at his home, including tazers,^[16]

Armed Forces ; Since the Second World War, servicemen and women have been banned from membership of organisations designated as "Communist or Fascist" and this includes the BNP. ^[17]

Prison Service ;

A ban on BNP membership was imposed by Martin Narey, Director of the Prison Service in 2002. Narey told the BBC that he received hate mail and a death threat as a result. ^[18]

Other Professions;

Bans on BNP membership in the probation service and the civil services have been under consideration. ^[19] ^[20] A proposal to ban the BNP from Dorset Fire Brigade, proposed by the management and the Fire Brigades Union, was turned down by the Fire Authority.^[21] The chairman of the BNP linked trade union "Solidarity", Adam Walker was sacked by his college for accessing BNP websites and posting comments. He has been summoned to a hearing of the general Teaching Council, with a view to preventing him from working as a teacher in the United Kingdom.^[22] His brother, Mark Adams has also been sacked, from another college, specifically for BNP membership.^[23] Cite error: There are <ref> tags on this page without content in them (see the help page).. A sociology student, Liam Birch, standing as a BNP council candidate for Southway was sacked as assistant warden at Plymouth University, when his BNP membership was known via an internet blog concerning the Holocaust, saying "The Jews declared war on Germany, not the other way round". ^[25]

Re ASLEF case, the Court's judgement merely says "The applicant was represented by Thompsons, solicitors practising in London". The full text is here. The applicant, of course, was ASLEF. Unfortunately that edit pretty much sums up my attitude towards you. Independent assessment has found the BNP article to be biased against them, and ytou continue to make it even more biased. Alleging that an old man who once fought to save your country has Alzheimer's simply because he now holds a view you disagree with is nothing short of appalling, as was the assertion that the BNP would have been on Hitler's side during World War 2. I'm no BNP cheerleader and can't defend the more extreme aspects of their views, but let's try to make a balanced article. I could not find an online copy of the Court of Appeal judgement of Lord Justice Mummery Redfearn V. Serco (2006) IRLR 623, but it is quoted in a briefing paper by John Hendy QC and Michael Ford on ASLEF v. United Kingdom thus

"... the dismissal of Mr.Redfearn was not on racial grounds but because the former employer...wished to avoid the perceived deterimental effects of Mr.Redfearn's membership of, and election to office representing thje BNP, which propagated racially discriminatory policies concerning non-white races who form part of (the employer's)workforce and customer base..." This is the definition of racism, so in reply to h2g2Bob's request for a source from higher up the legal hierarchy than a tribunal - here it is. Barnes (one of the 3 members of the "ethnic laison committee" of which onlt Rustem can claim to be "ethnic"- the other being Colin Smith)self desribed the BNP as whites only. Cardell Goodman[edit]

Cardell (or "Cardonnel") Goodman, known as "Scum" from his University days, was the son of a clergyman also called Cardell Goodman. He was born in.. At the age of three he moved to the Isle of Wight where his father became Vicar of Freshwater,succeeding the father of Robert Hooke. Cardell attended Trinity College Cambridge, obtaining the nickname "Scum" but was sent down for slashing a portrait of the College's Chancellor, the Duke of Monmouth. He made his living an actor until killing a fellow actor with whom he shared a shirt in a dispute over whose turn it was to wear it. Scum then became the lover of the Duchess of Cleveland (or one of them) and attempted to displace her sons as her heir by attempting to poison them. On bering discovered he left for a new career as a highwayman. he was subsequently caught but was pardoned by James II. He repaid the favour by becoming involved in Jacobite plots to restore James -The Assassination Plot of 1695/6 and the Fenwick Plot, to assassinate William III. Sir John Fenwick's wife paid Goodman and his friend Porter not to goive evidence against him in his treason trial. Porter took the money and left the country. Goodman took the money but still gave evidence. However without two witnesses Fenwick was not convicted. Nonetheless a law was passed by Act of Attainder declaring him guilty and he was executed. Goodman fled to Paris where he was supported by English exiles until his death.

Nick Griffin[edit]

I reverted your recent edit about immigrants on boats, for two reasons. I'd considered adding the material myself but do not consider the story to have 'played out' yet sufficiently enough to make a worthwhile addition, and secondly because the article is presently at WP:GAN and your reference formatting was inconsistent with that used in the rest of the article.

Oh I think its notable enough to go in, but bearing in mind that Griffin quickly corrected the interviewer and said he wanted to sink the boats, not drown their occupants, I thought it might be a story that could benefit from a pause for thought - who knows, it may snowball into something else.

Whites Only[edit]

The Equality and Human Rights Commission took an action against the BNP regarding provisions in its constitution to limit eligibilty for membership to "whites only", defined as members of the Anglo-Saxon and Celtic "Folk Communities". The original hearing before Judge Paul Collins in the Central London County Court on 2 September 2009 was adjourned due to the BNP failure to instruct counsel, resulting in the BNP being required to pay eighty thousand pounds in costs. BNP representatives claimed that among the intentions of the EHRC was to bankrupt the party by legal costs. Griffin then circulated membership to explain that that they would be conceding the case since it could cost upto a million pounds to take it to the House of Lords. On 15 October 2009 the BNP agreed before Judge Collins to suspend further membership applications until an Extraordinary General Meeting in January 2010 confirming the changes to the constitution to comply with legal requirements. The case has been further adjourned until 28 January 2010 in ored to ensure compliance.

Michal Morey article[edit]

Hi, Streona. I was directed to your fascinating article by an Australian Morey with several generations of Isle-of-Wight family history. I've also visited the island recently myself, and used one of my photos in an update of the Quarr Abbey article. While copy-editing (which I hope you'll check over), I found that the Michal Morey piece was surprisingly lacking in authoritative inline sources , though there must be plenty of book references in libraries. The website refs are interesting but not 'official' or historiographically 'reliable' enough for Wikipedia. Do you have the book For Rooks and Ravens? That looks to be the best one referred to in the article. It would be very helpful to have a few inline references to the book instead of only websites, don't you think?
