Open Help Conference

The Open Help Conference will be taking place June 15-19 in Cincinnati Ohio, USA. The conference includes two days of presentations and open discussions, followed by team "sprints" - collaborative efforts to write and improve documentation.

It has been suggested to send a team from Wikipedia/Wikimedia: to share our own knowledge about help, learn from others in the open source community working on similar problems, and to carry out a sprint to improve some aspect of Wikipedia's help.

There may be support available for volunteers to attend from the Participation Support program (and your editor is certainly hoping to be there!) Please join the discussion in Meta's IdeaLab if you're interested, and/or have suggestions about what we could work on.

Other news

If you don't wish to receive this newsletter on your talk page in future then just edit the participants page and add "no newsletter" next to your name.

Suggestions for future issues are welcome at Wikipedia:Help Project/Newsletter.

Re Moa hunters-inland along clutha river etc[edit]

Hi, Ive tried my best to condense a huge ammount of information to just a few sentences. I believe the information was an accurate synopsis of the very detailed research. Rather than just delete it, which is not very helpful, can you say what you found inaccurate or wrong? I will try to get back to it and fix any errors when I have time. Thanks for your interest and help.

Wrong ref for List of Honorary Doctors of Victoria University of Wellington[edit]

Stuart. The ref for List of Honorary Doctors of Victoria University of Wellington is a link to Waikato. Can you fix pls. Nurg (talk) 11:21, 14 June 2014 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Richard M. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

The Wikipedia Library: New Account Coordinators Needed[edit]

Hi Books & Bytes recipients: The Wikipedia Library has been expanding rapidly and we need some help! We currently have 10 signups for free account access open and several more in the works... In order to help with those signups, distribute access codes, and manage accounts we'll need 2-3 more Account Coordinators.

It takes about an hour to get up and running and then only takes a couple hours per week, flexible depending upon your schedule and routine. If you're interested in helping out, please drop a note in the next week at my talk page or shoot me an email at: jorlowitz@gmail.com. Your recent reverts on Maori land[edit]

You cannot just revert without some sort of explanation. I have 2 sections of information relating to my edits on land in "talk".You need to read that. Anyone who doesn't realise land is at the heart of Maori culture should not be editing that article."doesnt belong here "is a totally pointless and wrong statement. It seems to me you have little knowledge of the topic to write this. Land is at the very heart of Maori culture. Cultural attitudes to land did not stay static. The period of most change was post 1864. Go onto the talk page and argue your point that information about land doesnt belong in an article about Maori culture. I will be really interested to see them.

I'm going to guess that the reversion was this one. That edit does nothing to connect the information presented to Māori culture, which is the subject of the article, thus it doesn't belong there. I have no doubt that land is at the core of Māori culture, but your insertion of mangle-referenced bald assertions of land sales into articles doesn't help build the encyclopedia Stuartyeates (talk) 02:35, 24 June 2014 (UTC)

So you have no actual arguement it seems? The information provided was an illustration of the more generalized statement that preceeds it. Clearly you didn't read the whole article. The connection to culture is clear and obvious. The heading is "Changes bought about by contact with Europeans". You cant get a more obvious connection than that. Claudia

Review of the Mama Cash article[edit]

Hi Stuartyeates, thanks very much for your review of the Mama Cash stub. I've cleaned it up, and included references that are not self-published or close to the subject at hand. Part of the difficulty, of course, is that there is a certain form of systemic bias and under-representation re issues like women's rights - and thereby otherwise well-known women's rights organisations - especially in terms of mainstream media coverage. In any case, your points were well-made and I hope my edits have removed the issues you were concerned about. They also help me become a better editor! Thanks again, Anasuyas (talk) 21:31, 12 July 2014 (UTC)

:I'm an active participant in the work of Wikipedia:WikiProject Countering systemic bias, so we're on the same page here. I've removed the tags based on the new sources and made some tweaks. Given that the org is based in .nl, I'm surprised that all of the sources are in English, are you aware that Dutch-language sources are perfectly acceptable for proving notability? It's only when there are a surfeit of sources and we have to be selective that English-language sources are preferred. I would also encourage you to take a look at Wikipedia:WikiProject Feminism and Wikipedia:WikiProject LGBT studies which are both active in this area if you're planning an on-going campaign of editing. Stuartyeates (talk) 01:04, 13 July 2014 (UTC) Sorry, I've just seen what your day job is. Stuartyeates (talk) 01:16, 13 July 2014 (UTC)

Thanks, Stuartyeates. Yes, my day job has meant that I've spent most of my time in the last two years on Meta, and only copyediting on enWP. It was time to move into more solid editing on mainspace, but I do make newbie-ish mistakes still, so much appreciate your suggestions. I do know Dutch sources would be acceptable, but I wanted to confirm the 'international' notability of the subject, and I've found (sadly) that local sources have not always been universally welcomed. Thank you too for your work in Wikipedia:WikiProject Countering systemic bias, it's critically (sic) needed. :-) Anasuyas (talk) 18:57, 13 July 2014 (UTC)

Roger Goodman[edit]

I reviewed your message. Please review mine as it seems that others are violating by not ensuring that their "undo" content is verifiable.

The divorce declaration cited in occurred in October 2012. The Motion of Contempt filed in August 2013 (presented in court September of 2013) is a completely separate entity from the Temporary Orders filed back in October. The Motion of Contempt, was in fact, filed in regard to violations to the Final Order (which was the settlement) which occurred in June of 2013. The contentious divorce documents from October 2012 were not a part of the Final Order.

"I asked Carns if it was fair to quote contentious divorce documents in the Goodman ad, particularly since they're part of his ex-wife requesting more money in the settlement."

Therefore, the contentious divorce documents had nothing to do with the Motion of Contempt that you site. And since it is is impossible to change any financials after a divorce settlement is signed (in our case June 2013)--the three things are not one related to the other, placed in a sentence as if they are:

contentious divorce documents (Temporary Order--October 2013) and settlement (Final Order/Settlement--June 2013) requesting more money (Motion of Contempt--August/September 2013)

Requests for financial relief for attorney fees when forced to return to court for violations of parenting plans and settlement agreements is routine, but completely separate from the final settlement (inferring money) Final Order.

That is why I continue to edit this so that it is factual. The "undo" edits are disingenuous and an inaccurate picture. Erroneous and libelous.

I need to add that while you might have an opinion that my statements made under penalty of perjury were simply allegations, that is an opinion--not based in fact. Contentious indicates: causing or likely to cause an argument; controversial. Roger too, had the right to respond to my supposed "allegations," under penalty of perjury but chose not to. That was the time to dispute my supposed "allegations." Under penalty of perjury. Through the court of law. Not now, through a medium other than the court of law that doesn't apply the same standards or opportunity to rebut the accusations made.

Therefore, it should be assumed that my divorce declaration statements were not contentious because they caused no argument or disagreement. Roger, making no response to the court, indicates concurrence, not controversy.

I can only assume that the edits are made by supporters who are not caring about the Wikipedia standards for truth and non-inflamotory statements. Facts are very different from truth in Wiki world as well as my world. The edits essentially state that statements made under penalty of perjury are assumed false while statements with no standards for assessment or recourse are not. That is incongruent with reason. As you know, edits must be made fairly and rationally accessing the validity of claims.Perhaps you should be paying more attention to those who are not following the rules for biographies. I will be reporting those who continue to make libelous claims and making copies for my attorneys.

If you would like, I can have one of my attorneys explain in legalese. If you have any questions please feel free to ask.

I understand completely how this kind of error could have been made. That is why I simply request that you make the corrections asked.

Murray-Darling steamboat people[edit]

Good morning Stuartyeates. I thank you for taking an interest in this page. I am surprised that you take exception to the (very large) number of persons mentioned who have no notability whatsoever apart from qualifying as at one time owning or skippering one of these vessels. This of course is almost inevitable in the nature of a list.

I would of course like to see this page as good as it can be. Would moving the page to "List of Murray-Darling steamboat people" overcome your misgivings? Doug butler (talk) 23:03, 24 July 2014 (UTC) Doug butler (talk) 23:08, 24 July 2014 (UTC)

Mr problem is not with the name. My problem is that much of the material appears to be based on primary sources, with no obvious sources for much of it. Wikipedia is meant to be based on secondary sources. Stuartyeates (talk) 23:24, 24 July 2014 (UTC)data
I was going to address that point at a later stage when I had better knowledge of WP acceptable sources. The vast majority of data has come from contemporary newspaper reports, which I understood was OK. No; I referred to your first review, "This article may require cleanup to meet Wikipedia's quality standards. The specific problem is: Many people fail WP:LISTN; this needs to be trimmed or moved to a different namespace. Please help improve this article if you can. (July 2014)" Doug butler (talk) 00:06, 25 July 2014 (UTC)
Notability guidelines, including WP:LISTN and similar, are grounded in the use of secondary sources that cover the topic(s) in detail. Moving the article to draft:, User_talk: or User: namespaces would remove the immediate need for reliable sources by indicating that the article is not 'ready' yet. These issues are all derived from a lack of secondary sources; add secondary sources and all your problems go away. Stuartyeates (talk) 00:28, 25 July 2014 (UTC)
    • ^ Liv, A few minutes ago, KOMO changed the offending sentence in the text version of our story about the PAC funding ads against the Roger Goodman campaign to read: “I asked Carns if it was fair to quote divorce documents in the Goodman ad.” The videos we post to our website are cut from our aired newscast and thus cannot be edited after the fact.
