Yosemite Falls[edit]

Why this change? While beautiful, the new image depicts only Upper Yosemite Fall. The advantage of the previous image is that it shows both upper and lower falls, which makes sense for the lead image in an article about the collective falls. Thoughts? (I can open a discussion in article talk space if you think that would be more helpful). Rivertorch (talk) 20:25, 28 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You ready for another RfA?[edit]

Your last RfA in March mentioned judgment issues. Well, I've seen no recent issues in your judgment, and feel that you're ready to handle the tools. Take your time in deciding and let me know what you think. The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 02:58, 7 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure if you remember this, but I offered a nom a few months back; would you mind if I co-nom with the utahraptor? Derild4921 13:52, 7 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That's a great idea, Derild. It would look better if there was a co-nom. But just so you know, THFSW requested that the nomination page be created tomorrow (see here). The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 13:54, 7 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sure no problem though I'll be busy as I get home so I'll write up a nomination and if I can't post it by the time the RFA is ready to be transcluded, can you post it? It'll be in my Sandbox. Derild4921 13:59, 7 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hm...I think it would look better if you posted it. I'll probably be online from 20:00 to 2:00 (UTC), so if you're on at any time between then, send me a notice and I'll get the RfA up and running. The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 14:10, 7 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • The page has been created. Derild4921 will add a co-nom statement. Feel free to accept at your convenience. The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 02:46, 8 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The article Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM lens has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-notable as per WP:GNG; refs. are not independent of subject.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Sorry for using such a crude PROD notice while notifying an experienced editor... Anyway, the above notice also applies to the following article: Tamron SP AF 90mm f/2.8 Di 1:1 Macro. Thanks. Guoguo12--Talk--  20:41, 8 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Everything is going to be OK[edit]

It's understandable that you want to take a break after your failed RfA. Do return when you feel better; you are a valuable contributor. The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 22:05, 8 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't see your RfA but I'm sorry it went the way it did for you. I hope you come back soon, refreshed and ready. Meanwhile, I'll help take care of your wiki-kitten...best wishes Plutonium27 (talk) 00:50, 9 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, I'm afraid I missed that RFA. But please try and think of it as a learning experience, my first RFA failed for at least 7 different reasons and I was rather surprised that four months later I was able to pass quite easily. ϢereSpielChequers 15:40, 9 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A discussion has begun about whether the article Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR, which you created or to which you contributed, should be deleted. While contributions are welcome, an article may be deleted if it is inconsistent with Wikipedia policies and guidelines for inclusion, explained in the deletion policy.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR until a consensus is reached, and you are welcome to contribute to the discussion.

You may edit the article during the discussion, including to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article. Christopher Connor (talk) 18:37, 24 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Announcement[edit]

Hello! I'm The Arbiter, one of the coordinators for WikiProject Zoo. I am proud to announce the launch of a new portal: Portal:Zoos and Aquariums! ZooPro, ZooFari, and I worked hard to create a new portal for information on zoos, aquariums, and the associated projects and articles on Wikipedia. If you could head on over, take a look at our work, and maybe learn some more about zoos and Wikiproject Zoo, it would be great! Cheers and Happy Editing!

Please refrain from posting anti-science propaganda on the science reference desk. We're trying to be a reliable reference source, here. Friday (talk) 22:24, 6 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

"Anti-science"? Please show me a diff of me being "anti-science". --T H F S W (T · C · E) 22:46, 6 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'd thought it was obvious what I was referring to. Evolution is about as well supported as any idea in any science has ever been. You're either severely misinformed or outright dishonest, if you're going to go around suggesting otherwise. Friday (talk) 22:51, 6 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Seriously, the reason I doubt evolution is because I am pro-science. I have looked at the facts and have never come across any real, solid proof for evolution. Am I being dishonest be informing people about the facts? --T H F S W (T · C · E) 22:57, 6 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Such debates are not relevant here. Just please stick to scientific information on the science ref desk. On topics where there is legitimate scholarly dispute, it's alright to say so. If you were familiar with science it's more likely you'd speak of "evidence" rather than "proof", so I assume you are a lay person. That's fine; Wikipedia needs contributions from lay people as well as experts, but please keep in mind that your own personal lack of knowledge does not constitute a legitimate scholarly debate. Friday (talk) 23:04, 6 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I just got my wording a bit wrong (I know there is almost never any 'proof' in science). I understand now when to and when not to comment; but wasn't that a scholarly debate? --T H F S W (T · C · E) 23:08, 6 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Well.. I am no scholar, are you? I doubt it was something most people would call a scholarly debate. :) Anyway, other people have already suggested some reading. I highly recommend The_Greatest_Show_on_Earth:_The_Evidence_for_Evolution (the actual book, not the article) as a overview of the evidence. I suspect, if you've found the evidence uncompelling, that perhaps your information has been coming from creationist sources? I'm not sure why you'd be looking there, but in my experience about the only plausible way for someone to doubt evolution is when they've been exposed only to intentionally misleading sources. Friday (talk) 23:59, 6 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Vancouver Wikipedia 10th Anniversary Meetup[edit]

The above link may be of interest to you. Bob the Wikipedian (talkcontribs) 20:41, 8 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I'm an unofficial coordinator of the WP:TCG, so I can tell you a little bit. But you'd probably get more relevant information from ZooPro (talk · contribs) or Intelligentsium (talk · contribs). Basically, it's a lot like being an administrator, except what you manage is the policy &c, make sure the project stays active, keep people up-to-date with new happenings, motivate people to keep editing &c. It takes a lot of passion and often a lot of forced smiling, but if you do it well, people will thank you for it. But like I said, someone who's coordinated WP:ANIMALS before is a better guide for what goes on with this project-- I'm speaking mostly from the standpoint of a trading card game design WikiProject. Good luck! Bob the Wikipedian (talkcontribs) 21:47, 8 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'd think so-- that shows you endorse the nomination. If I was nominated for coordinator of something like WP:HISTORY, I'd sure as heck want the opportunity to decline! Bob the Wikipedian (talkcontribs) 21:52, 8 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Not really sure; be creative. You might simply list your name under support, you might post a long statement of acceptance or something. Lots of possibilities. Going first gives you the chance to set the standard. Bob the Wikipedian (talkcontribs) 22:03, 8 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

At WikiProject Amphibians and Reptiles, in which you are listed as a member, we're working on a pretty massive backlog (1000+ articles!) of unassessed articles. We would appreciate it greatly if you would help assess the articles in the link. It's simple to do!

  1. Read over the article.
  2. On the discussion page, look for the {{AARTalk}} template. Add in a "class" and "importance" parameter if the template does not have them already. Example: {{AARTalk|class= |importance= }}
  3. For the class, fill in the article's quality using the WikiProject's quality scale: stub, start, C, B, GA, A, or FA. Most unassessed articles will probably be stubs or start class articles, and definitely B or lower.
  4. For the importance, fill in the article's importance to the WikiProject using the importance scale: low, mid, high, or top. Most unassessed articles will probably be low or mid importance.
  5. Then you're done!

It's not a difficult task, but there's a lot to get done. Our hope is that we can chip through the backlog and assess every article within the auspices of the project. Thanks, bibliomaniac15 00:31, 12 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I like the way it has two borders, and multiple floats. However, I am not so sure about the background colour (I think orange is a bit hard on the eyes). I would suggest two different colours for the borders, maybe something reddish outside of something blueish or greenish. --T H F S W (T · C · E) 17:56, 29 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The article List of future combat aircraft has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of information - A bit of a random list with an unclear inclusion criteria

Red Deer[edit]

Please be careful before just reverting as you did in Red Deer. It was evidently a mistake. Notice also that twinkle only is for dealing with vandalism, and how these edits, even if they had been factually wrong, could be considered as WP:Vandalism is unclear to me. OK, thanks for fixing it. I only actually saw the last edit by this user, and it looked like they were adding someone's name (a very common type of vandalism).

Please take care to read pages before tagging them - leaving attack pages visible, such as Harry potter and the Never War could have very serious consequences for the WikiMedia Foundation. If you are in doubt as to which tags to apply, please take a moment to review the instructions at WP:NPP and WP:CSD, and if anything is still not clear, don't hesitate to ask me on my talk page. Happy editing! --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 06:26, 30 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Username[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia and thank you for your contributions. However, I noticed that your username (The High Fin Sperm Whale) may not meet Wikipedia's username policy because "sperm" in username could offend sensible souls. If you believe that your username does not violate our policy, please leave a note here explaining why. As an alternative, you may ask for a change of username, or you may simply create a new account to use for editing. Thank you. Szansztar (talk) 19:14, 15 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I see what you're suggesting, but I don't see that it is inappropriate, since I'm sure most people have heard of a sperm whale and I doubt anyone would make that connection. Plus, it says right on my userpage where my name comes from. The word "sperm" in the name is actually a shortening of "spermaceti", an oil in the whale's head, and has no connection whatsoever to the other type. If I have to change it, I will, but I sure wouldn't like to. --T H F S W (T · C · E) 19:18, 15 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
OK, i understand how "sperm" is an abbreviation of "spermaceti" in this case. I was thinking that some people might react to the word "sperm" anyway, but maybe we should just wait and see if there are any reactions. Szansztar (talk) 08:07, 19 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'm in Category:Usernames editors have expressed concern over, so an admin is bound to see it eventually and decide whether a rename is necessary. Although I rather doubt it, I've been here for almost three years and no one has brought it up. Thanks for checking out whether this will be an issue or not; I've never actually thought about it before. --T H F S W (T · C · E) 19:23, 19 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
What in goodness names is this rubbish??? THFSW has been here a while now and is a very respected and expert editor who holds a number of flags and rights on wikipedia. I find it offensive that you had the hide to post a warning..... This is red tape gone trully mad. I guess we should remove the Sperm whale article because it may offend someone......ZooPro 12:25, 20 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks ZooPro. But I don't think this is anything to take offense over. Szansztar did not do wrong I think; it never hurts to make sure. We'll just have an admin come over and clear things up, then no hard feelings, right? --T H F S W (T · C · E) 17:01, 20 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Going through CAT:UAA, I don't see a problem, so removed from category. Courcelles 00:54, 13 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to help assess Wikipedia:WikiProject Gastropods[edit]

Hi. I am inviting members of some WikiProjects to take part in evaluating their projects in order to help the Wikimedia Foundation better understand such projects from the inside, to encourage reflection on best practices, and to compile a list of best practices as recommended by a number of projects. I am contacting you because you are listed as an active member of Wikipedia:WikiProject Gastropods. Having witnessed that project's work in the past in my volunteer capacity, I'd very much like to include it. I hope that you will have time and interest in participating. As much or as little as you would like to supply would be gratefully received. The assessment questions are posted at Wikipedia:WikiProject Gastropods/Self-assessment. I will myself steer clear of the page until after any discussion seems to have become dormant, at which point I will ask questions to make sure that I am developing a good overview of opinions. Thanks. --Maggie Dennis (WMF) (talk) 13:04, 7 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Research into the user pages of Wikipedians: Invitation to participate[edit]

Greetings,

My name is John-Paul and I am a student with the University of Alberta specializing in Communications and Technology.

I would like to include your Wikipedia user page in a study I am doing about how people present themselves online. I am interested in whether people see themselves in different ways, online and offline. One of the things I am looking at is how contributors to Wikipedia present themselves to each other through their user pages. Would you consider letting me include your user page in my study?

With your consent, I will read and analyze your user page, and ask you five short questions about it that will take about ten to fifteen minutes to answer. I am looking at about twenty user pages belonging to twenty different people. I will be looking at all user pages together, looking for common threads in the way people introduce themselves to other Wikipedians.

I hope that my research will help answer questions about how people collaborate, work together, and share knowledge. If you are open to participating in this study, please reply to this message, on your User Talk page or on mine. I will provide you with a complete description of my research, which you can use to decide if you want to participate.

Thank-you,

John-Paul Mcvea

I appreciate your participation in my study[edit]

I appreciate your participation in my study, entitled “Online Self-presentation among Wikipedians.”

Here are five short questions that will help me to understand your motivations for creating a user page such as yours. Please be as brief or as thorough as you like.

5 QUESTIONS

1. Are you a member of social networks such Facebook or MySpace?

2. In addition to maintaining a user page in Wikipedia, have you also written or edited articles? If so, about how many times?

3. What are the key messages about yourself that you hope to convey with your user page?

4. Have your Wikipedia contributions ever received feedback, such as being edited by others or commented on? Have you received a message from another Wikipedia user? If so, do you think your user page positively or negatively affected what other people said and how they said it?

5. Do you see your “online self” as being different from your “offline self?” Can you elaborate?

Please indicate your answers to these questions on your talk page, or on mine. Please respond by October 1st so that I have time to properly read your responses. If you like, you can email your answers to me instead (jmcvea@ualberta.ca).

Thank you again : )

Hi - I have added a bit to this article since it was on the list of Wikiproject Waterfalls stubs to be expanded. A few things I noticed in your contribution. 1) Are you sure kayakers actually go over the falls? Black Brook Waterfall[edit]

Black Brook Waterfall is a waterfall near Ingonish, Nova Scotia, Canada.

When you created this page you probably had the correct co-ordinates on it. They have since been edited to the co-ordinates of a different Black Brook Waterfall on Mainland Nova Scotia.

I know where Black Brook is near Ingonish, it empties into Black Brook Cove, but I don't know where the falls are on the brook (its a long brook) and they don't show up on the topo map I have so I can't put the correct co-ordinates into the article. I tried looking at older versions of the article but the co-ordinates don't seem to change when I do that.

Do you know where exactly the falls are? Ken Heaton (talk) 19:24, 10 May 2012 (UTC) Here's a map:[reply]

I'm afraid I do not. The link I referenced it with appears to be broken now. However, the coordinates have not been changed since I created the page. --T H F S W (T · C · E) 20:39, 10 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Warning of 206.15.232.233[edit]

Hi, I noticed you added a Level 4 warning to User talk:206.15.232.233 after a Level 1 warning for an edit that was not egregious. For the purposes of ARV, could you change it to a Level 2, as this is very likely to receive an improperly warned rebuff in case it goes there. Thanks. Transcendence (talk) 21:23, 16 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Firstly, I would have to disagree with what you said about it not being egregious - it was a deliberate act of provocative vandalism. However, you are right, Level 4 was a bit high. However, I didn't use a Level 2 warning as this user had already gotten Level 1 and 2 warnings this month and also had a long history of being warned previously. I probably should have used Level 3. Thanks for the heads up. --T H F S W (T · C · E) 22:24, 16 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Well we'll just have to disagree about what's egregious or not. I've seen far more outrageous vandalism than a one non-vulgar word insertion. =D Transcendence (talk) 22:45, 16 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I wouldn't say it was non-vulgar, as I highly doubt he was referring to a garden tool. Although there are far worse ways to vandalize. --T H F S W (T · C · E) 22:49, 16 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Europe 10,000 Challenge invite[edit]

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Europe/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Slovenia etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for Europe and your specialist country like Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every country of Europe, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant and also sign under any country sub challenge on the page that you might contribute to! Thank you. --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 21:09, 7 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Problem with your custom signature[edit]

Hello, I'm sending you this note because you need to update your signature. You have a custom signature set in your account preferences. Your signature does not link to your account. This is usually because your account has been renamed.

To fix your signature, you need to find the signature section in the first tab of Special:Preferences and either blank it or change the link to your current account name. More information is available at Wikipedia:Signatures#Customizing how everyone sees your signature. mw:New requirements for user signatures/Help#Wrong user links. If you have followed these instructions and still want help, please leave a message at Wikipedia talk:Signatures.

Thank you, Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 23:46, 25 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! Hopefully this fixes it. --THFSW (talk) 18:21, 26 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
