Image copyright problem with Image:Kosovo relations.png[edit]

Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading Image:Kosovo relations.png. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. STBotI (talk) 23:18, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

And again[edit]

Um. "Region" is OK, but the rest of that section which you restored refers to "the remainder of Serbia..." etc. which is POV and contradictory. Black Kite 01:39, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

  • Fair enough. I read it as indicating that Kosovo was unilaterally still part of Serbia (though the fact the pro-Serbian editors are reverting to that wording does suggest that is how it reads). I have reverted myself, anyway. Black Kite 01:46, 19 February 2008 (UTC)
    • As regards the disputed tag, I'd agree except that the lead paragraph is disputed too, which leaves an obvious problem about where to put it except at the top. To be honest I'd leave it out of the lead for the time being though. Black Kite 01:47, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

Parties in the European Council[edit]

When we next update this -- on 29 February 2008, when Christofias takes office in Cyprus -- we'll need a new colour for the Communists... Will you be doing that? —Nightstallion 10:53, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

Well, then we might also want to mention that Yves Leterme is to take office in Belgium on 20 March if everything goes as planned. ;)Nightstallion 07:28, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Eurodems.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 20:04, 27 February 2008 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Angr If you've written a quality article... 20:04, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Eurodems.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Eurodems.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Angr If you've written a quality article... 20:04, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

cats re Boundary]]/Kootenay Countries[edit]

...and Shuswap and Thompson and Kamloops and....I saw your addition of the Kootenay cat to Category:Boundary Country and I know you hear it often that the Boundary Country is part of the West Kootenay (nb the cat refinement for Category:West Kootenay now exists) and I gave that some thought when I set up this category hierarchy and didn't want to go there. Because in other relationships and perceptions it's seen as part of the Okanagan; I guess in the way the Columbia Country is seen as part of "the Kootenays" when in so many terms it's not, and wasn't even when the Big Bend Highway (well, it was pretty much a rutted dirt road...) saw some population and presence around the northward arc of the Columbia; never was a big population, but like the Columbia Valley it was its own place; no longer there, or a shadow of itself anyway. Ditto with the Arrow Lakes, which in the general perception are part of the Kootenay cultural/social area but are really their own region (hence Category:Arrow Lakes); it's all so fuzzy, huh? But the mitigating factor with the Boundary Country situation, other than the Okanagan association - and Okanagan media and Lower Mainland do refer to the Boundary as part of the Okanagan, alternately with being part of the Kootenay - is that it's not part of the Kootenay Land District nor linked to the Kootenay basin, which is the core meaning of the term "the Kootenays" - the network of valleys surrounding the Kootenay River; it's the Kettle River basin and also was in its time more economically powerful and populous than the Okanagan, and was parallel to the heyday of the Slocan and West Kootenay mining towns; it's relatively empty now, whole cities have vanished; but it was a place of its own. Thing is, if you include it in the Kootenay category, there's grounds to include it in the Okanagan category; its northward counterpart the Monashee Country I haven't written yet, but it's definitely not part of the Kootenays (although culturally similar, between both Doukhobours and hippies/draft-dodgers/environmental-back-to-the-landers) and usually assigned to the Okanagan (e.g. Cherryville and the Shuswap River towns, which are on the Okanagan templates somewhere). BTW I chose Okanagan Country despite its awkwardness/archaic flavour despite the normal plain-jane "Okanagan" because of possible confusions stateside; maybe that wasn't necessary given Category:Arrow Lakes but too late now; people from BC know Okanagan's a region, and the Kootenays are a region; "Kootenay Country" seemed to be able to take in the Arrow Lakes and swuch more comfortably; but yeah it's a judgement call, ain't it? Fair's fair, it should have Category:Okanagan Country, too...but then so should, according to perceptional if not historical paradigms, the Similkameen Country; and the Thompson-Okanagan, Shuswap-Okanagan, Kamloops-Okanagan, Nicola-Similkameen dualities all rear their heads; I had to draw the line somewhere. Give it some thought, where do we stop overlapping them? Oh, and plain cat names like Okanagan and Similkameen could be confused for First Nations categories, that was the other reason. BTW in BC's history both the Similkameen and Boundary Country were gold rushed and otherwise exploited and settled much earlier than the Okanagan, and/or the Kootenay, that's the other reason they're distinct - they're older, and as it happens also linked to each other; Shuswap's a bit different, it's always been parallel, if separate from, the Okanagan and the "Kamloops Country" as the media call it; up to Barriere and out to Chase and over to Savona I guess, the cat is just "Greater Kamloops" or something I think. Sorry for the long post, it's typical for me, it's just there's lots of reasons....another is that the Boundary is part of the Yale Land District, as well as in a distinct basin; Christina Lake and either Eholt Pass or Blueberry Pass, that's where the Kootenay starts, for me anyway but I'm not from around there; I suppose how Grand Forks and Greenwood and Rock Creek refer to themselves would be the way to go....Skookum1 (talk) 04:26, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for straightening out the East/West Kootenay electoral items and the West/East Kootenay redirects; Kootenays may eventually break down into East/West Kootenay subarticles (and associateds, like Columbia Country/Columbia Valley etc.). Also a heads-up that when I created the CAtegory:Kootenay Country and similar (e.g. Category:Okanagan Country I chose those names for some "symmetry" in the region-names - they are ways those regions are referred to, although a bit more archaic and, if in use today, very casual, as in the way a weather forecaster uses it - "up in the Kootenay Country" etc. It's just lately in the course of adding the Kootenay cat I find myself typing Category:Kootenays, which is the more natural and also more widespread usage; do you think Category:Kootenays and maybe Category:Okanagan are worthwhile changes; Category:Cariboo also I suppose although most of the rest require "Valley" or "District" or "Country" in them to avoid confusions (as with Category:Chilcotin, although Category:Tsilhqot'in is a subcat of Category:Chilcotin Country anyway. These are of course mostly Interior designations in nature, coastal regions have a different sort of name (Lower Mainland, Central Coast, Sunshine Coast etc.)Skookum1 (talk) 18:04, 28 July 2008 (UTC)
Re regions of BC - I'm drafting a "Regionalization systems of British Columbia" or "Regions of British Columbia" which would encmopass all types of regions (and respective cats) - MoE and MoF and other ministry regions, landform/physiographic regions, geologic regions, climatic/biogeoclimatic zones/regions, volcanic provinces etc etc etc - reason being is there's various articles out there like Fraser Plateau and Basin complex which are WWF/Nat'l Geophysical Survey (?) derived, vs Fraser Plateau which is about hte landform and would be in the landform hierarchy, as opposed to the ecological context of the WWF-related article. Part of this has to do with my reservations about the use of Regional District categories on things that don't have to do with the jurisdiction of the Regional District (everything from IRs to fed/prov parks and Timber Supply Areas); this would get especially unwarranted if mountains were put in a subcat, if created, such as Category:Mountains of the Cariboo Regional District, British Columbia as there are already mountain/range-regionalization hierarchies at work (though no Category:Mountains of the Cariboo and not even Category:Cariboo Mountains - NB the CRD includes also the Chlcotin and other areas outside the traditional Cariboo; as do the Cariboo Mountains. Anyway, Category talk:Regional Districts of British Columbia has a discussion, which I've got to reply to later today at some point, about my reservations on all this and I think I also posted on the WikiProject British Columbia Discussion page on issues connected with it, including links to the respective MoE, MoF, and Tourism regions; I just found another map of Land Office districts/regions (not the same as Land Districts, oddly enough). BC has a multi-layered system of governance that belies anythying like the choesion of a county system; which is why Ithink the traditinoal-region cats are important. Especially on the "people from" cats where I think "people from Kitimat-Stikine" is not anywhere near as relevant as "People from the Nass Country" or "People from the Skeena Country" or "People from the Stikine Country" (all regions within that RD); applying RD divisions to things/concepts that RDs do ont themselves classify as, or that no one else has done the same for, is a kind of original research as it creates new paradigms, rather than reflecting them....

Speedy deletion of Image:Ausdem newlogo.JPG[edit]

Nuvola apps important.svg

A tag has been placed on Image:Ausdem newlogo.JPG requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is redundant copy (all pixels the same or scaled down) of an image in the same file format, which is on Wikipedia (not on Commons), and all inward links have been updated.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on [[ Talk:Image:Ausdem newlogo.JPG|the talk page]] explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. It's fair enough you want to undo the merge on Planet X[edit]

(though I can't think why) but why delete sourced, well written information from the Planet X article? The other article's equivalent is unsourced and badly written. Plus, how can an article be called "hypothetical trans-Neptunian planets" when most of the planets described in it are not hypothetical? Serendipodous 17:06, 15 June 2008 (UTC)

As long as the information is there, and the citations are there, I don't really care where it is. My main problem with the article is that it isn't very clear on what it's trying to say. Serendipodous 18:53, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
However, I do feel that, since Patryk Lakawka refers to his hypothetical planet as "Planet X" and nearly every article on the topic has described it as the new Planet X, it seems rather odd to keep his object out of the Planet X article. Serendipodous 11:49, 16 June 2008 (UTC)

It's not working. Already people are adding references to Lakwaka's work to Planet X. And they will continue to do so no matter how much we try to block it, because Lakawka calls his world Planet X, and there really is no way to break the connection. I'm going back to the original idea. The fact is that using the term "Planet X" to describe a gravitationally affective unseen planet, whether Lowell's or not, is standard practice, and it can't really be constrained to Lowell alone.Serendipodous 13:09, 20 June 2008 (UTC)

I don't want this to escalate into an edit war, so I've asked someone to come in and judge the situation. Here's what I wrote. I've sent it to a lot of people, including CKatz, who worked on the "Trans-Neptunian planets" article, so hopefully we'll get unbiased comment.Serendipodous 14:49, 20 June 2008 (UTC)

I've renamed the Planet X article Planets beyond Neptune, and tried to preserve as much information from that article as I could. Serendipodous 09:57, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

Makemake pronunciation[edit]

Since the dwarf planet has been named for a deity, it can safely be assumed that the pronunciation of the two is the same. The Rapa Nui deity had had a name for more than a few days. The citation for the pronunciation (which I did not add) gives an approximate rendering and describes the pronunciation as matching that of Hawaiian, which is another Polynesian language. Please check the sources before doubting them. --EncycloPetey (talk) 00:29, 15 July 2008 (UTC) Sorry, as I seem to have posted to the wrong person. RD cats/usage[edit]

Just noting your changeback of the attempted harmonization of RD names; the idea was really to harmonize teh category names, for ease-of-use, and also in the case of the cats to get rid of comma-province (which seems to have also been done at the saem time). Granted, if that's the way the RDs style themselves it's certainly appropriate to the article titles; not so certain about the cats (otherwise Category:British Columbia MLAs would be Category:Members of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia, for example). In any case, if we're to stick hard and fast to usage, then Category:People from Cariboo Regional District and Category:Communities in Cariboo Regional District are incorrect (as well as odd-sounding) and should be Category:People from the Cariboo Regional District and Category:Communities in the Cariboo Regional District (of many potential examples). We don't speak of RDs as if they were stand-alone proper names; the usage is always with "the" (as you'll find on the RD's own sites). I'm not clear if you're an administrator, or who in WPCan is, but this is a change across the board for regional district subcats that's been needed for a while now; I just never got around to raising the issue (as other issues about the use of RD cats I've been more concerned with...note the creation of Category:Cariboo people and there will be Category:People from the Similkameen and the like, as subcats of the RD people-cats)Skookum1 (talk) 00:51, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

Campbell River/Strathcona RD: Northern or Mid?[edit]

Hi; just saw your refining the VI cat to the Northern VI cat....User:KenWalker is away (in India) but he's from Qualicum; he and I had debated about what to do for a name for what we BCers generally call "the Mid-Island" (hence Category:Mid Vancouver Island), which is the east coast of the Island, of course, not Ucluelet-Tofino of course but (maybe?) includes Alberni....where "Southern" starts is also debatable, although I submit that Duncan definitely is Southern rather than Mid but in my estimation (speaking as a Mainlander despite some time spent in the Capital, but also riffing off the usual geogrpahic descriptions in news/weather) while hte North Island starts just north of Campbell River, Campbell River itself is part of the Mid-Island; certainly the rest of the Island's portion of the Strathcona RD is in "Mid Vancouver Island", not the North Island. "Northern Vancouver Island" was used because "North Island" obvoiusly wouldn't make any better of a category name than "Mid-Island" would, and also as it happens "Northern Vancouver Island" is also BC Tourism's rebranding of what we generally call the North Island; butwhich is Gold River, Woss, Port Alice, Port McNeill, Port Hardy etc. Also I gather perhaps you've put the Northern VI cat on the SRD page/cat, but it spans the islands and straits to the Mainland....right into the heads of the inlets of course. This is one of the reasons I'm adamant that "regional districts are not regions", becuase they span regions; even our usual term "the South Coast" would not refer to the head of Bute Inlet, though it's "the Coast" in terms of people from the Chilcotin; Category:South Coast of British Columbia might suffice, but that the most populated part of the SRD is on Vancouver Island.....aaargh, I think you see my frustration maybe....anyway just some thoughts I'm on my way out the door before my gym closes (at 4, it's 1:15 now). but "what to do" about Island-Mainland spanning categories needs some discussion; it helps to discuss it with another BCer as other canadian Wikipedians "just don't get it" and think that RDs are just fine as region categories; this is an example of why they're not....Skookum1 (talk) 17:17, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

In general I place RDs as subcats of teh actual regions, rather than the other way around....doesn't always work as quite often RDs incorporate two regions (e.g. Columbia-Shuswap, Squamish-Lillooet, Nechako-Bulkley); in this case we need a name for the Mainland coast north from the Malaspina Peninsula - "coastal inlets" is used in weather forecasts, that's all I can think of; it tends to mean from Knight Inlet southwards, I think, maybe it means Fitz Hugh/Dean Channel and northwards but I'm pretty sure north from the Queen Charlotte Strait is just referred to only as the Central Coast and North Coast. For now both all Vancouver Island cats and insular cats like Discovery Islands and Gulf Islands are subcats of Category:South Coast of British Columbia but it seems to me unless we can come up with a name for mainland regions, in this case there's no choice but to include the subcats as well as their parent.....Skookum1 (talk) 17:30, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

Vancouver East and Vancouver East (electoral district)[edit]

Just curious why you re-dabbed the latter with "provincial" added in, since the first one, the federal one, doesn't need a dab (there are no other usages in that form, not even a city ward...the old city wards, which we don't have articles for anyway, were Grandview, etc. for that area). Normally there's no need to use "provincial" if there's no other kind of electoral district in the offing....btw on any provincial electoral districts, or historical/defunct districts, if you happen to have time, please add the riding=yes switch to the WPCan templates (I note that the provincial electoral district only had the WPVan tempalte on it but it really shoudl have the WPCanBC also....Skookum1 (talk) 15:43, 7 February 2009 (UTC)

Mackenzie (provincial electoral district) I've restored to it not-being-a-redirect to a different riding in a different region. "Whatever gave you that idea?" is all I can say.....Skookum1 (talk) 01:42, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

Good catch on ADIE/AIDE[edit]

Thanx for updating Template:Political organisations at European Union level to take account of AIDE's dissolution. It was dissolved 31 Dec 2008 but no-one noticed until Feb 2009! Is there anywhere (other than here!) where the Europarties are registered? It'd really help if there was somewhere an official list of names, dates of birth, funding, etc. Regards, Anameofmyveryown (talk) 02:53, 10 February 2009 (UTC)

GO Transit Infobox[edit]

You've been working hard! Couple of minor things I've noticed:

1. Extra blank line between the image and the caption.
2. Lots of white space around the line information imbalances the remainder. (Do we really need this in every infobox?)
Thanks. -Secondarywaltz (talk) 02:57, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

BC prov electoral districts template[edit]

Thanks for taking all that on....just wondering on the template if that Vancouver / North LM split vs Fraser Valley South LM split is something Elections BC cooked up; "North" and "South" just don't seem right geographically/compass-wise, it's more like "West" and East".....I'm imagine there's reason to your rhyme; dito Vancouver Island/South Coast which is a-geographical somewhat if North Island is included (the Queen Charlotte Strait region is part of the Central Coast). If those are divisions used by Elections BC I guess that's what it is, though....I can make some additions to various pages describing the changes relating to ridings they're made out of and waht areas are in/out in each case.....and since the districts were created in 2008, shouldn't hte title say that instead of 2009?Skookum1 (talk) 01:33, 5 April 2009 (UTC)

Also wanted to comment off-article that the obvious gerrymandering of the redistribution is nothing new historically, but another noxious reminder how sad and bad it was that STV wasn't approved by the political parties (since the public thesmelves clearly approved of it). 33 safe seats vs 18 safe seats for Lib/NDP is not reflective of their general proportions in the popular vote, needless to say; I could make various specific comments but that's beside the point, other than to observe that taking Keremeos out of what had been Yale-Lillooet and putting in Ashcroft-Ccche Creek-Clinton and some of far southern suburban Kamloops seems pretty much a guarantee that that will no longer be a swing riding, as it often has been; similarly cutting the wealthier east side of Mission out of Maple Ridge-Mission weakens the NDP share in the latter, while stregnthening the Liberal hold on teh Abbotsford ridings...I'm sure such a pattern is consistent across the redistribution although unilkely to be discussed by the "reliable sources" (CanWest papers and network...). Anyway noting your inclusion the redistribution article of the Vancouver Sun editorial, please see Monte Paulsen's lead article on The Tyee, which is fairly neutral and mostly stastical in nature, and surprisingly not all that partisan (given The Tyees leanings towards the NDP, which is maybe why that article dwells on the Green vote-split0. A huge task all of this; I'm wondering if on the adjusted and new ridings section there cam be NPOV cmoments about what was added/changed and what's in each riding now; e.g. "Maple Ridge-Mission: Ferndale, Hatzic, the former area of Mission City, and areas eastward were removed and added to the newly-created Abbotsford-Mission", re Fraser Nicola "Keremeos and the Lower Similkameen are now in XXXX while Clinton, Ashcroft and Cache Creek, formerly in XXX were added to what had previously been named Yale-Lillooet" etc....Skookum1 (talk) 01:58, 5 April 2009 (UTC)

Three Rasmussens[edit]

Hi. You updated the sorting of the articles on Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, and Lars Løkke Rasmussen to sort by their middle name rather than Rasmussen. I have undone all three edits, as Rasmussen is indeed their last name, and they all three have two first names (in Denmark, you can only have one last name). Just letting you know. STV referendum gag law

Thank you The Tom for your contributions on BC political stuff in wiki. I need to convince you the STV gag law is real and important for BCer's to know about. Different then the election gag law, different Act completely. Please phone BC elections at 1 800 661 8683. Verbal confirmation. Yes you can read the regulations from BC election's webpage, goto resource section, legislation. Better you speak to a BC election official directly, and know it is the truth and in play. Thank you for allowing this back onto Wiki. BC (Canada) needs you Tom.

Nechako Lakes[edit]

I added the unreferenced tag and mention of the usual names for the region these are in; this term, to me, has only become even partly current because of the coinage of the school district name and the electoral district, both of which are rather new; Seeing Stuart, Takla, and Trembleur in the same "group" as Ootsa and Francois is rather, odd, to say the least.....I suppose perhaps Cariboo Lakes, Chilcotin Lakes, Shuswap Lakes etc are all fair game, too, though the government has not seen fit to coin a group/region name in the same way; to me it's rebranding but in any case some references are needed for the name; i.e. other than the school district and the electoral district, which to my knowledge are the only usual usages.Skookum1 (talk) 20:08, 12 May 2009 (UTC)

You have no idea what you are talking about[edit]

The Saskatchewan Liberal Party is still affiliated with the federals. You need to find a source on that. It's not on me to find a source because they started out affiliated. DO NOT revert my edits removing that they aren't affiliated until you do. Sorry but let me tell you some Saskatchewan history. The provincial PC and Liberals ran as one party to take down the NDP and called themselves the Saskatchewan Party, but the provincial PC and Liberals still remained different parties and the Liberals are still affiliated with the Federals. They ran as a single party so the didn't split the vote. You see they are still Liberals who refuse to join with the PC and run under the Saskatchewan Liberal Party and they are still affiliated with the Federals. When YOU find a source on when they stoped you can put it back. Remember the burden of sources are on you because the part started out affiliated. When it comes to Canadian politics I know what I'm talking about.--Fire 55 (talk) 06:14, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

Beaver Pass[edit]

I realize there is currently only one Beaver Pass article, which got created due to its relationship to localities around Cottonwood, British Columbia in a string of article-creations in that area, i.e. Beaver Pass House. The more important and notable Beaver Pass topographically-speaking is between the Beaver River (Selkirks) and the Duncan River, and was to be Beaver Pass (Selkirks), though that name is not in BCGNIS it does appear on maps, and oddly I recall it occurring in Basemap, which is theoretically based on BCGNIS but they don't always coincide. There are also two Beaver Passes in the US - one in Whatcom County in Washington, the other in Bonner County in Idaho. My intention was that Beaver Pass would be a disambiguation page as there doesn't seem to be any one of these, other than the Selkirks one, which is more notable than any of the others, though I'm unfamiliar with the history/locations of the US passes.Skookum1 (talk) 01:51, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

Sifton Pass[edit]

I haven't made this yet, should have a long time ago; it's the pass in the Rocky Mountain Trench between the Finlay/Kwadacha and Liard/Kechika-Fox basins....it's neither in the Rockies nor in the Cassiars, technically speaking, though forming a crucial "col" between them....I suppose when made it should be in both those categories. Also just wanted to ask that when you make a new pass article, to place the WP:Mountains and WP:Canada:Geog/BC templates, and the respective range category...there's more in the Rockies yet, of course......Skookum1 (talk) 14:06, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

Swift River (Teslin Lake)??[edit]

Shouldn't this has been changed to the "Teslin Lake" dab, as above, rather than to "Teslin River"? btw I'd used "Teslin" originally to refer to the region/country ,as also with Swift River (Cariboo River), though in both cases it happens that the dab is also the name of the parent watercourse.....oh, that's not actually been made...I gather the correct one to use is "Cariboo River" rather than "Cariboo"??Skookum1 (talk) 13:11, 10 September 2009 (UTC)

Non-UN vs UN non-[edit]

Can you please argue why UN non-member states is better than Non-UN member states?

Non-UN member states receives 31700 hits on google while UN non-member states gets less than 1/10 of that. Furthermore, even the UN uses the former version (check on of the first links on the google search: http://www.un.org/Depts/dpko/dpko/question/faq.htm). The fact that some other wiki article also uses the less common wording is not a valid arguement. --Xeeron (talk) 11:59, 14 September 2009 (UTC)

GO Transit stations and infoboxes[edit]

I've noticed a few recent changes you've made to GO station article infoboxes. I think you need to speak with User:Secondarywaltz, who has been working on a standardised infobox for station and line articles, and with whom I had a brief discussion about it at the beginning of the week. Ontario transit connections[edit]

Thanks for trying to debug. I assume it's the slight extra space after the first entry. You come from BC, so do you think I should move this and the related colour definitions to "CAN transit connections" & "color" (or something), to make it national? Metrolinx[edit]

Metrolinx owns and runs everything. There is no such thing a the Toronto Air Rail Link system, despite the succession templates you have made, it is part of Metrolinx. There are no ARL stations, they are all currently operating GO Stations owned by Metrolinx. Because things have been restructured since the original creation of the GO Transit system all the related templates and succession boxes should more correctly be renamed Metrolinx. But who wants to do all that. Do you? Secondarywaltz (talk) 21:31, 27 November 2011 (UTC)

Sport in Canada[edit]

Hello,

I was in the process of nominating Category:Sport in Canada for speedy renaming to Category:Sports in Canada, to match the main article Sports in Canada, when I noticed that this would undo the outcome of a six-year-old CFD discussion which you had initiated.

After reading the discussion, I find myself quite confused. On the one hand, there is Portal:Sport in Canada, but on the other hand, the portal calls itself "The Sports of Canada Portal". Likewise, there is Wikipedia:WikiProject Canadian sport, but I was told on the talk page (here) that 'sports' is more prevalent in Canada. Finally, Sport Canada and Canadian Interuniversity Sport follow British English, yet we see CBC Sports (http://www.cbc.ca/sports/) and the Toronto Star and The Globe and Mail have 'sports' sections (http://www.thestar.com/sports and http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/).

It is my hope that you could perhaps shed some light on the matter, and I would be grateful for any clarification that you could provide. Thank you, -- Black Falcon (talk) 06:57, 24 January 2012 (UTC)

Yeah, happy to expand a bit on my reasoning.
Sport is one of those cases where Canadian usage runs a weird third path between American English and British/Rest-of-Commonwealth English. Both "Sport" and "Sports" are used as overarching descriptors for the field depending on context.
"Sports" tends to be used by Canadians in circumstances where one is discussing several distinct games/codes/etc. all at once in a non-abstract sense--so, a boastful Canadian 9-year old might say "I'm good at sports" meaning he's generally physically gifted and chosen by his classmates to play baseball and football on the school playground (A British child would say "I'm good at sport."); likewise the section in Canadian newspapers that summarizes the scores from World Cup qualifying, the latest golf major and the latest news from the Ice Hockey world is called "Sports" (While the Sydney Morning Herald calls its section "Sport"). In this sense, Canadian usage parallels American usage and is at odds with British/Rest-of-Commonwealth usage.
However, when one is using "Sport" as a mass-noun for the concept of physical activity, Canadian usage falls back in line with the Commonwealth. The Canadian Olympic Committee uses it as such, as does the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport or Coaching Association of Canada. So for circumstances where Wikipedia is discussing sport in a quasi-academic sense as it pertains to Canada, Canadian usage would dictate it be "Sport" singular. This is different from American usage.
Hope that helps a bit. The Tom (talk) 23:48, 28 January 2012 (UTC)
It does, thank you. -- Black Falcon (talk) 18:40, 23 February 2012 (UTC)

MSU Interview[edit]

Dear The Tom,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name HERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) 07:26, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

Union Pearson Express[edit]

Union Pearson Express is a division of Metrolinx, just one line and not a stand alone system. It was absolutely pointless and petty to move the Metrolinx templates. A Metrolinx template system gives the flexibility to add other lines and define color. I thank you for caring enough to try and improve things and, although I think you are wrong, I have more important things in my life to worry about than dispute this with you. Ambox warning blue.svg Thanks for uploading File:Unfccc montreal2005 logo.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:18, 4 February 2013 (UTC)

We noticed though that when you edited Canadian federal electoral redistribution, 2012, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Davenport and Etobicoke Centre (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.
