Google Books Citation Tool! http://reftag.appspot.com/[edit]

??????????

Hi there.

Saw your note on my talk page about the Google Books app not working. I Just checked it out and it's still working fine for me. I haven't come across any down time or disrupted service. Just to make sure you have the right link - here's the full URL http://reftag.appspot.com

I have it bookmarked for fast access. You may also want to poke about for some other Ref Tools - Wikipedia:Citation_tools. The one for NY times is a godsend - give it the webpage URL and it pulls the actual page number from the original publication.

You may also want to have a look at Wikipedia:RefToolbarPlus#refToolPlus as once it's installed you cut out the step of going to http://reftag.appspot.com - it does it all in the Wiki Edit Window.

I wonder why some of these tools are not better known about? P^)

... might make life too easy for the newbies! Media-Hound 'D 3rd P^) (talk) 17:04, 11 June 2012 (UTC)

Cheers - one educator to another! Media-Hound 'D 3rd P^) (talk) 19:44, 11 June 2012 (UTC)

Would you mind terribly?[edit]

Checking out the article I have chosen to really work hard on? I decided after reading it that it needed a lot of help. I am going to take my time and do it right of course or to the best of my ability anyway. It appeared to me that it was somewhat personalized to whomever wrote it to begin with and there were not many facts verified at all... actually I don't think there were any. But anyhow I noticed on its talk page there were some negative opinions about the whole thing so I would like to change that around by making it a really cool article =) I haven't removed much of the "iffy" wording or facts just yet. I notice that I get a bit side tracked and jump around when I find some facts to add and then cite and end up at another portion of the article and so on. Does that happen to you to? Thanks for any advice in advance. Here is the article Methadone Maintenance. Oh yea and I was wondering how could I get the article name changed to Methadone Maintenance Treatment? I think that would be better. Let me know what you think I would love that.... ȚttØØditre§ 02:12, 13 June 2012 (UTC)

Hello, Tlqk56. You have new messages at fuhghettaboutit's talk page. --12:51, 18 July 2012 (UTC)
I have done a copyedit, made various tweaks and additions and spent a lot of time looking for a photograph to add. I am having trouble finding one. I did find this but I'd much rather use one from the 1930s-40s. Did you come across any in your travels? This is very well done. You might want to submit this to WP:GAN (or I would do that for you if you want). The only thing I see as problematic is the lead which needs to be expanded to summarize the article or is sure to be a sticking point.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 03:19, 19 July 2012 (UTC)
You found one more photo than I did, then. I couldn't believe I never saw one anywhere, though I didn't do a specific search. I can try tomorrow, but I doubt I'll find anything you don't; there are sites my computer won't access right now. I'd be interested in seeing an article through the GAN process, if you think it has a chance. But I wouldn't want to do it by myself -- I just have no clue what I might be getting into. I can try a writing a better lead, but I've never done much with them and don't really know what to say. If you want to just do it, feel free. Sometimes I learn better seeing something done rather than just reading a description. I appreciate all the time you're taking for me, whatever you do. Tlqk56 (talk) 03:40, 19 July 2012 (UTC)
Not wanting to make a new section I thought I'd fit this here and figure you'd find it. I have nominated Tunis as a good article. The work will come when the review starts. I still wish there was a picture, but I really don't think the one you found or the one I found are better than none:-)--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 03:55, 27 July 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. I can wait a bit for the action to start, I have quite a bit going on now. I do have another new article ready for DYK if you're ready for me to move it out. Tlqk56 (talk) 16:04, 27 July 2012 (UTC)
Anytime you're ready! Maybe tell me about it on my talk page in a dedicated section, so we can discuss any issues.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 18:32, 27 July 2012 (UTC)

Re:Can you help me?[edit]

Hi, DocTree. If you have time I could use a bit of help. I know I've had this run by me before, but I find myself unsure again. If a book containing a professional-looking portrait is published in 1909, can one assume the photo is copyright free? (I'm looking at William Bowen here. ([1]) Thanks in advance. I hope you're keeping cool this summer. I am -- by staying home and writing. Tlqk56 (talk) 21:53, 21 July 2012 (UTC)

No problem at all. In general, "any work published before January 1, 1923 anywhere in the world is in the public domain." For verification and details, see the main public domain article. For even more detail, read the article talk and click the edit tab to see some embedded exceptions (that don't apply here). Google books should be attributed. I wasn't sure if you knew how to extract images from a .pdf so I cropped it out in a couple of versions, the first with the caption and the second without:
* File:Wm Bowen v1.png
* File:Wm Bowen v2.png
Also, did you notice that the particular volume that Google digitalized was actually signed by William A. Bowen? His signature and a date are on a blank page (page 8 of the .pdf digitalization) before the title page. Would his signature be useful for your project? If so, let me know and I'll copy it to a file for you. And keeping cool? Well, getting to attend Wikimania 2012 was super kool but otherwise, it's been a long, hot summer. Take care and be sure to let me know if you want an image of that signature, DocTree (talk) 03:55, 22 July 2012 (UTC) PS: Continue conversation here on your talk page. I'll watch your talk for a bit rather than going back and forth.)
Thanks for the help! I will peruse that page, and probably save it for later. I didn't notice his signature, and was hoping I could find one, so I'll take you up on that offer. I've never added one to an article before but would like to. How do I attribute Google books? Does attributing it when uploading it on WP count? Or does the article tell me how to do it? I'll bet Wikimania was fun -- it's always energizing to attend a big gathering of motivated people. Tlqk56 (talk) 14:44, 22 July 2012 (UTC)
I'll grab the signature Monday night. Working graveyard shifts at the console so a coworker can take a class but will be off and at my home PC for Mon and Tue nights. DocTree (talk) 07:22, 23 July 2012 (UTC)
There is absolutely no rush. I'm still researching and writing the article. I expect to take several more weeks, at least. So take your time. Tlqk56 (talk) 07:27, 23 July 2012 (UTC)

Doctree, While I'm taking advantage of you -- and again there's no rush -- could you grab another image for me? This pdf: http://djm.cc/library/The_Enchanted_Forest_Bowen.pdf is of a book Bowen wrote that was published in 1920.It has some gorgeous color illustrations. I'd love to use one or two in the article since they're copyright free. But as soon as the first color picture loads my laptop freezes up -- every time. Could you pick a couple of nice ones and grab them for me? I know I need to get my computer de-bugged, but I dread going without it for very long. Thanks a lot. If you ever need something I can do, just ask. I owe you! Tlqk56 (talk)

First, the old stuff. I converted the .png format pic's to .jpg which are a bit smaller and more suitable for Wikipedia, per image guidelines. I also uploaded the signatures but learned that converting them to .jpg actually made larger files so they're still original .png format. I won't clutter your talk page with more image thumbnails; you'll have to go to commons.wikimedia.org to look at them in Category:1909 photographs and Category:Signatures.
* File:Wm Bowen v1.jpg (use the .jpg files in your article rather than .png)
* File:Wm Bowen v2.jpg
* File:Wm A Bowen sig full.png (signatures are better in .png file format)
* File:Wm A Bowen sig only.png
Now I'm off to look at The Enchanted Forest to see what I find there. Take care, DocTree (talk) 04:42, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
Only color illustration was the frontpiece. I transformed the .pdf to .png, then converted to .jpg. The originals are as they appear in the book with the image in the middle of the white page. The "_c" versions are of the illustrations with the white border cropped away. Uploaded them to Commons.wikimedia.org under Category:Illustrations. File names are:
* File:The Enchanted Forest Bowen Frontpiece.png
* File:The Enchanted Forest Bowen Frontpiece.jpg
* File:The Enchanted Forest Bowen Frontpiece c.jpg
Add caption here
* File:The Enchanted Forest Bowen Frontpiece c.png
In general, Wikipedia prefers the .jpg be used in the article. Compressed format so the files are smaller, use up less bandwidth, load faster for those with slow Internet connections, etc. I included .png because they're lossless in case someone else wants to manipulate the files for some other article. The book has lots of pen-and-ink illustrations that I can copy if you want any or all. Let me know. Take care, DocTree (talk) 06:22, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
Gorgeous! You've made me a happy camper. Those pics will really brighten up the article -- not to mention that I finally get a good look at that illustration. Thanks again. Tlqk56 (talk) 15:03, 24 July 2012 (UTC)

William Alvin Bowen[edit]

His WWI draft registration cards is on ancestry.com, it is hand written so not that easy to read: William Alvin Bowen aged 41, born May 15 1877 in Baltimore, it gives an address 2651 Van Buren Place, Los Angeles, his father was born in Baltimore and he was self employed at 1041 Citizen Bank Building, LA. Ancestry has a bit more stuff including a California, Biographical Index Cards from the California State Library which has father Jessie N Bower and mother Mary Amanda Hall, he married Grace Lee Dunan at Baltimore on 31 July 1902 and he was educated at Baltimore Public Schools & University of Md. Also Ancestry has a copy of a book "California, History of the Bench and Bar of Southern California, 1909 Record for William Alvin Bowen" which has a biography of Bowen - graduated from University of Maryland in June 1898 practiced in Baltimore until he moved to LA in 1905. A family tree source says he died 18 Sep 1937. Probably enough clues to keep you going. MilborneOne (talk) 15:53, 22 July 2012 (UTC)

Yes, connecting the writer and the lawyer opened up a lot of info! Thanks again. Tlqk56 (talk) 16:26, 22 July 2012 (UTC)

Meissen-teacup pinkrose01.jpg Hey, I really appreciate both your thoughtful questions and your thoughtful answers at the Teahouse. Thanks for your contributions! :) Keilana|Parlez ici 03:44, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
Thank you! I'm such a Teahouse fan. I would have given up in frustration months ago without them -- I'm one of those people who needs the most basic answers, and the personal Teahouse touch makes a big difference to me. The more confrontational, impersonal side of WP turns me off. Also, Teahouse gives me the chance to meet great folks like you. It's been nice to see you there, too. The Tea Leaf - Issue Five[edit]

Stop by for a tasty glass of wiki-iced tea at the Teahouse, today!

Hi! Welcome to the fifth edition of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter of the Teahouse!

  • Guest activity increased in July. Questions are up from an average of 36 per week in June to 43 per week in July, and guest profile creation has also increased. This is likely a result of the automatic invite experiments we started near the end of month, which seeks to lessen the burden on hosts and other volunteers who manually invite editors. During the last week of July, questions doubled in the Teahouse! (But don't let that deter you from inviting editors to the Teahouse, please, there are still lots of new editors who haven't found Teahouse yet.)
  • More Teahouse hosts than ever. We had 12 new hosts sign up to participate at the Teahouse! We now have 35 hosts volunteering at the Teahouse. Feel free to stop by and see them all here.
  • Phase two update: Host sprint. In August, the Teahouse team plans to improve the host experience by developing a simpler new-host creation process, a better way of surfacing active hosts, and a host lounge renovation. Take a look at the plan and weigh in here.
  • New Teahouse guest barnstar is awarded to first recipient: Charlie Inks. Using the Teahouse barnstar designed by Heatherawalls, hosts hajatvrc and Ryan Vesey created the new Teahouse Guest Barnstar. The first recipient is Charlie Inks, for her boldness in asking questions at the Teahouse. Check out the award in action here.
  • Teahouse was a hot topic at Wikimania! The Teahouse was a hot topic at Wikimania this past month, where editor retention and interface design was heavily discussed. Sarah and Jonathan presented the Teahouse during the Wikimedia Fellowships panel. Slides can be viewed here. A lunch was also held at Wikimania for Teahouse hosts.

As always, thanks for supporting the Teahouse project! Stop by and visit us today!

How are you? Just checking in. After my disaster with all my materials I made a decision to temporarily discard my idea for reworking that Methadone maintenance article. The Tea Leaf - Issue Six[edit]

Hi! Welcome to the sixth edition of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter of the Teahouse!

  • Teahouse serves over 700 new editors in six months on Wikipedia! Since February 27, 741 new editors have participated at the Teahouse. The Q&A board and the guest intro pages are more active than ever.
A lovely little teahouse nestled in Germany from Wiki Loves Monuments
  • Automatic invites are doing the trick: 50% more new editors visiting each week. Ever since HostBot's automated invite trial phase began we've seen a boost in new editor participation. Automating a baseline set of invitations also allows Teahouse hosts to focus on serving hot cups of help to guests, instead of spending countless hours inviting.
  • Guests to the Teahouse continue to edit more & interact more with other community members than non-Teahouse guests according to six month metrics. Teahouse guests make more than twice the article edits and edit more talk pages than other new editors.
  • New host process implemented which encourages anyone to get started as a Teahouse host in a few easy steps. Stop by the hosts page and become a Teahouse host today!
  • Host lounge renovations nearing completion. Working closely with Teahouse hosts, we've made some major renovations to the Teahouse Host Lounge - the main hangout and resource space for hosts. Learn more about the improvements here.

As always, thanks for supporting the Teahouse project! Stop by and visit us today!

GOCE mid-drive newsletter[edit]

Guild of Copy Editors September 2012 backlog elimination drive mid-drive newsletter
Writing Magnifying.PNG

  • Participation: Out of 37 people signed up for this drive so far, 19 have copy-edited at least one article, about the same as the last drive. If you've signed up but haven't yet copy-edited any articles, every bit helps; if you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us!
  • Progress report: We're almost on track to meet our targets for the drive. Great work, guys. We have reduced our target group of articles—August, September, and October 2011—by about 44%, and the overall backlog has been reduced by 58 articles so far, to around 2600 articles. The biggest difference between this drive and the previous one is a stronger focus on large articles, so total word counts are still comparable.
  • Don't forget about the Copy Edit of the Month contests! Voting for the August contest has been extended through the end of the month. You don't have to make a submission to vote!

Paging Tlqk56, white courtesy phone[edit]

Hi. You've been away now a long time. I hope everything is okay. Just wanted to ping you. I thought you'd like to know that in your absence, The Secret River (Rawlings book) was listed as a good article. I was able to muddle my way through the GA review without you, though it could have been a close thing. John R. Tunis is now eighth on the list at its WP:GAN category and probably will be reviewed soon. Hope to see you back. Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 22:20, 28 September 2012 (UTC)

Guild of Copy Editors September 2012 backlog elimination drive wrap-up
Writing Magnifying.PNG

Participation: Out of 41 people who signed up this drive, 28 copy-edited at least one article. Thanks to all who participated! Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Progress report: We achieved our primary goal of clearing July, August, September and October 2011 from the backlog. This means that, for the first time since the drives began, the backlog is less than a year. At least 677 tagged articles were copy edited, although 365 new ones were added during the month. The total backlog at the end of the month was 2341 articles, down from 8323 when we started out over two years ago. We completed all 54 requests outstanding before September 2012 as well as eight of those made in September.

Copy Edit of the Month: Voting is now over for the August 2012 competition, and prizes will be issued soon. The September 2012 contest is closed for submissions and open for voting. The October 2012 contest is now open for submissions. Everyone is welcome to submit entries and to vote.

The Guild of Copy Editors invites you to participate in its events:

  • Voting is in progress for the September 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest. Everyone is welcome to vote, whether they have entered the contest or not.
  • NEW!! In the week from Sunday 21 October to Saturday 27 October, we are holding a Project Blitz, in which we will copy edit articles tagged with {{copyedit}} belonging to selected project(s). For the first blitz, we'll start with WikiProject Olympics and WikiProject Albums and add more Projects to the blitz as we clear them. The blitz works much like our bimonthly drives, but a bit simpler. Everyone is welcome to take part, and barnstars will be awarded.
  • November 2012 Backlog elimination drive is a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy edit backlog. The drive begins on November 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on November 30 at 23:59 (UTC). Our goals are to copy edit all articles tagged in 2011 and to complete all requests placed before the end of October. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copy edits at least one article, and special awards will be given to the top five in the following categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", "Number of articles of over 5,000 words", "Number of articles tagged in 2011", and "Longest article". We hope to see you there! – Your drive coordinators: Stfg, Allens, and Torchiest.

GOCE November 2012 copy edit drive update[edit]

Guild of Copy Editors November 2012 backlog elimination drive mid-drive newsletter

  • Participation: Out of 31 people signed up for this drive so far, 22 have copy-edited at least one article. If you've signed up but haven't yet copy-edited any articles, every bit helps; if you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us!
  • Progress report: We're on track to meet our targets for the drive. We have reduced our target group of articles—November and December 2011—by over 50%, and 34 of the the 56 requests made in September and October this year have already been fulfilled. However, the rate of tagging for copy edit has increased, and this month we are just keeping the size of the backlog stable. So, all you copy editors, please do come along and help us!
  • The September 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest was won by Baffle gab1978 for his copy edit of Expulsion of the Acadians. Runner up was Gareth Griffith-Jones for his edit of I Could Fall in Love. Congratulations to both.
  • The October 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest is in the discussion and voting stage until midnight November 30 (UTC). You don't have to make a submission to vote!
  • November 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest is in the submissions stage until midnight November 30 (UTC), when discussion and voting begin.
  • Seasonal oversight: We had a slight fall from grace in the title of our last newletter, which mentioned the season in the northern hemisphere and thus got it wrong for the southern. Fortunately an observant GOCE member was ready to spring into action to advise us. Thanks! In future we'll stay meteorologically neutral.

Last month January was our most active month so far! 78 profiles were created, 46 active hosts answered 263 questions, and 11 new hosts joined the project.

Come by the Teahouse to share a cup of tea and enjoy a Birthday Cupcake! Happy Birthday to the Teahouse and thank you for a year's worth of interest and support :-)

The Windy Hill frontispiece[edit]

In the documentation of [Frontspiece in book "The Windy Hill" by Cornelia Meigs.jpeg] you say, "I can't even find a reference to the illustrator of this book."

The signature for the frontispiece is almost legible from the image on file (and moreso from the image at google books, Cornelia Meigs#External links). Can you read it? Is the book illustrated otherwise? by the same artist (you may be able to judge from styles or illegible signatures)?

LCCatalog[2] notes only the frontispiece, unattributed. -P64

We Can Do It!.jpg
  • Progress report: Thus far we have reduced the number of May/June 2012 articles to just 124 articles, so we're on the right track. Unfortunately, for the first time in GOCE history, the number of articles in the backlog has actually gone up during this drive. While all participants are currently doing a fine job, we just don't have as many of them as we have had in the past. We have over 500 editors on our mailing list, but only 18 editors who have done a copy edit for the drive. If you're receiving this newsletter, it's because you have an interest in copy editing. Join the drive! Even if you only copy edit one article, it helps. Imagine how much progress we could make if everyone chipped in just one article.
