Image unsourced[edit]

The proctology.JPG image you uploaded doesn't state a source, and I'm conserned that you, probably with good intentions, pulled it off a commercial website via Google or something. Therefore I tagged it. Please clarify this matter, because otherwise the picture might be deleted... --Steven Fruitsmaak 14:43, 11 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image Tagging Image:Proctology.jpg[edit]

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Proctology.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then it needs to be specified where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, consider reading fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, consider checking that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Pseudoscience category[edit]

Hi Travisthurston - thank you for removing category:pseudoscience from several pages; you beat me to it. I wouldn't call placement of the tag (or its removal) vandalism, though (check out WP:VAN). But I agree totally with your edit summaries that discussion on the talk pages is a must. Thanks very much! cheers, Jim Butler(talk) 06:34, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

wikistalking and home email[edit]

I have reported you. The pseudoscience issues are discussed on the psuedoscience talk page. There is good authority for placing the labels. Pls do not wikistalk me or contact me again at my home email. Mccready 16:23, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

pseudoscience[edit]

leave the category where it belongs. It takes more time than it's worth to protect your good edits otherwise. And let me repeat: DON'T send me any email or any abusive email. Your veiled attempts to bring my personal details into this are AGAINST wikipedia policy and people have been banned for it. Mccready 17:15, 15 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Page protection[edit]

Hi. Just to let you know that adding the {{protected}} tag does not add any protection - only administrators can do that. If you want the page protected then contact an administrator or list the page at WP:RPP. Please don't add the template unless the page is actually protected. Thanks. -- zzuuzz (talk) 08:26, 25 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I liked the new userbox that you created so I used it right away. But how did you get this idea? :-) CG 17:05, 25 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

New userboxes[edit]

Per the terms of the German userbox solution new userboxes should not be created in template space. Please read up on the current practices. That page has instructions on how to properly create userfied userboxes. --Cyde Weys 20:39, 26 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Naturopathic Medicine and Naturopathy[edit]

Hi Trav, it's certainly a possibility to make the split, as the Naturopathic medicine page currently has to do everything. The only thing is that there is also a Natural hygiene article (and people have tried to merge that with Naturopathic medicine), Nutripathy, Holistic health, Natural health, so it would be worth considering whether to have a Naturopathy (disambiguation) page like this: Osteopathy (disambiguation) to clarify the differences between the articles. I split Osteopathic medicine to Osteopathy, but there was nobody else around to help with the heavy lifting, so it kind of got stuck unfinished, but I would be willing to work with you on Naturopathy. --apers0n 05:38, 8 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I saw you modified the Template:Alternative medical systems to include Osteopathic medicine in place of Osteopathy - actually Osteopathic medicine is not an alternative medical system, today it is allopathic in it's approach, Osteopathy is the alternative system. I would like to change the Osteopathy article to reflect that when I have time. Actually Osteopathic medicine is not even mentioned as an alternative medical system [1], but "a form of conventional medicine", classified as one of the 'Manipulative and Body-Based Methods' whereas Naturopathic medicine and Naturopathy are used interchangeably as an alt med system. --apers0n 05:53, 12 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, there could be a better structure to the categorisation of Alt med on Wikipedia, but if it is not referenced from somewhere independent like a government institution it would only lead to conflict amongst WP editors. I looked at the WHO definitions, but they are a bit vague. I suppose we should work with what we have got until someone finds something better. We can talk about Naturopathy/Naturopathic medicine on Skype if you like... --apers0n 16:54, 12 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I have requested authorisation to Skype you about this. --apers0n 05:11, 28 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mccready is issued a 30 day community probation related to Pseudoscience articles[edit]

Hello

Based on the comments left on AN/I, I issued a 30 day topic ban to Mccready. (see Community probation log [2]) Discussion on talk pages is encouraged. Admins can enforce the ban if needed. Crosspost from AN:

Based on this discussion on AN/I [3] and the numerous comments on Mccready's talk page, Mccready (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · page moves · block user · block log) is issued a 30 day ban from editing all articles related to the Pseudoscience. Mccready is encouraged to discuss his ideas on the talk pages of these articles. The the suggested sanction for disregarding the article ban is a 24 hour block with the block time adjusted up or down according to Mccready's response. A model criticism section[edit]

A model criticism section I found at the Renewable Energy article, here<---
I think it is a great example of how we can all make artcles better.
Here is the sample:

   * Renewable energy
         o Types
+ Hydro (including criticism of hydro)
+ Biofuel (including criticism of biofuel)
+ Solar (including criticism of solar)

License tagging for Image:NHC.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:NHC.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 04:07, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for bringing that article to my attention![4] I'd noticed some recent activity there and some outstanding edits by User:Gleng. (His recent comments on pseudoscience on FloNight's user talk page were right on the money.) I'll keep an eye on it. Seems like there are similar dynamics as we've had in the past on pseudoscience, but at the moment there are some good cool heads keeping things in check. cheers, Jim Butler(talk) 19:52, 26 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,[edit]

I just fixed the GSE article per your request. I thought the headings in blue would be nicer for the article. Well... I was just being creative. Wikipedia is about being bold. I was a little too bold that time. On a personal note. Be cautious of GSE. This stuff has high levels of sythetic preservatives in it. On a lighter note, jump into the car and go straight to the health food store and buy no salt added whole grain bread, organic pasta, lots of farm fresh produce, and quality natural remedies that really work. You know... the good stuff.

Also, check out the website organic consumers association for the latest info. Thanks, Aubrey.

I have found a bunch of references that I have added in the talk page that perhaps need to be used to expand the article. You expressed an interest in helping out in that article and I was wondering if you are still interested. If so, then please comment in the talk page.Thanks.Hkelkar 08:15, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

pseudoscience[edit]

I noticed that you removed holonomic brain theory from the pseudoscience category after I added it. From seeing the various protests regarding the pseudoscience category, I guess you are aware of the pros and cons and have reasons for your opinion. As a physics graduate student, I can only sigh and shake my head at the interference to human achievement in science caused by frauds dragging physics into some philosophy dreamed up during an acid trip.

I can only remind myself that "this is the price we pay for freedom". Let them have their opinions and just admire their imagination. Let them make money off it too...if some people are stimulated by their ideas then maybe they do have some real value. To be more blunt, if people are too ignorant to see through it then maybe they deserve to get ripped off anyway.

In any case, after dabbling in Wikipedia I quickly learned that these sorts of battles are a lost cause, and that one shouldn't waste time arguing with irrational people. It just seems that at least these kinds of articles ought to some kind of highly visible "controversial" tag, to make sure that casual readers are aware of the debate. This seems like a reasonable compromise to me. Badguy21 14:18, 5 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Um yeah, that's why it is called a "theory". Your studies in physics can only understand what is observed, and we have only begun to understand that which we cannot see. See: Solipsism If you studied medicine, psychology, neurology or quantum physics, then theories like this probably wouldn't bother you so much... good luck with your coursework! --Travisthurston 21:42, 5 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Biorhythms[edit]

I am wondering why you removed examples of biorhythms I posted in a new section. I spent a good hour researching these major events in sports. Based on the five pillars, I am very confused why you would do that. Below is a link for another example when Zach Johnson won the Master's then later appeared on David Letterman. Since you removed the notability tag on List of Accredited Naturopathic Medical Schools in North America without making improvements and I don't see how the article is notable I nominated it for deletion. Feel free to expand and demonstrate its notability. If it passes WP:CORP, I'll withdraw the nomination. Arbustoo 21:18, 16 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It is generally considered poor behavior to ask people to vote on an AFD when 1) you created the article, and 2) you expect them to vote a certain way. I contacted you out of courtesy since you created the article. I am now sorry I did. Arbustoo 23:18, 18 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I found some non-copyvio versions and restored them to the logs - feel free to revert to one of them. Sorry about that, but it looks like someone replaced the article with an exact copy-paste of that webpage in about mid-July, and then it only got edited slightly thereafter. Since most people don't replace an active, good-quality page with copyvio, I didn't realise there was good material that could be reverted to. Adam Cuerden talk 13:03, 1 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unspecified source for Image:Ncnm.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Ncnm.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 02:45, 9 November 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Jusjih 02:45, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re:[edit]

I'm not sure what the problem would be for the redlinks to "go on" for months. Of the three, Clifford Pusey is almost certainly an eventual article target, but regardless, we have an entire project dedicated to writing articles that are repeatedly redlinked to (WP:MWA). Redlinks alert the reader to two things: that a subject they may seek information on does not currently have an article (and so they do not have to run a search for it), and that it may possibly need one; I write articles based on seeing redlinks in existing articles, myself. Whaling industry in Maui[edit]

Yeah, that was off the top of my head. From the whaling narratives I've read I know they only spent a few weeks to a month in the spring and again in the fall in the Sandwich (Hawaiian) Islands. My source on the peak of visits by whaleships to the islands (1843-60) is in my notes somewhere. I know 1865 is much too late. The trade had diminished considerably by that time. I didn't know how to re-word the part about whaleship arrivals, as it made it seem as if 400 ships visited in one year, when really many of those were repeat visits by the same vessels. I believe it was 1846 when there were over 400 whaleship arrivals in Lahaina. Perhaps you could help re-word it?Jonas Poole (talk) 23:20, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:MauiSouthShore.JPG. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Travis Thurston+ 20:51, 7 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome back[edit]

I just noticed you were editing again, so welcome back! Viriditas (talk) 10:02, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! :) Need help with anything? I could use some study distractors this week! --Travis Thurston+ 07:15, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Heheh, is that a trick question? I think the correct answer would be, hell yes. Take a look at therecently updated watchlist to see what's going on. Ideally, I would like to start working the kinks out of Niihau, so if you want to take a look at that article or make suggestions for improvement on the talk page, that would be great. Otherwise, name the subtopic (relating to Hawaii topics) that interests you the most, and I can point you to a set of articles that need work. Thanks! Viriditas (talk) 08:28, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, if you can pick an island, any island, and focus on improving it, that would help. Weren't you working on Maui? Viriditas (talk) 08:46, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Good deal! I'll look into Niihau and other land masses. BTW, I just read Niihau Incident, very interesting... Thanks for the focus. I was doing Maui, but only because I was traveling through and adding photos. I think I have some for the Big Island too. Let me know if there is anything in particular I should do. The last day or two I've benn distracted following a coord bot :) Thanks. --Travis Thurston+ 22:46, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Question[edit]

Hi, I asked you a question over here a while ago. Still interested in a response. II | (t - c) 00:33, 7 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Mos:Hawaii[edit]

Thanks for the note — just one question: what is "Mahalo"? I should note that there are at least three communities that should have the hakao and okina in their names (Hōnaunau, 'Ō'ōkala, and Pāpa'aloa): because the GNIS lists them as such, it's reasonable to conclude that with-diacritics is the most common form of their names in English. On the other hand, no complaints about your moving of others, especially the CDPs, which clearly don't have the diacritics in their names. Nyttend (talk) 03:39, 20 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

One request with the moving of communities: could you please fix the link in the county template when you move a community? Nyttend (talk) 13:26, 20 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, I thought a bot would take care of it in a couple of days... But yes, will do. :) Mahalo! --Travis Thurston+ 17:53, 20 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I am a fairly new editor working on the Hawaii (island) pages. I noticed some of the pages moving away from using diacriticals. It is not clear to me exactly what the consensus was in the Hawaii Manual of Style, just lots of discussion. Is it to use them in the text of the article, but not the title? Maybe a clear statement of this in the style manual would make sense. For example, Napo'opo'o spelling as "Napoopoo" seems like just encouraging people to mispronounce it in a disgusting way. Even if the official census data omits them (the postal service for example also does), would it make sense to add them back into the text of the articles for the CDPs, or do you want to keep the CDP articles to have only the data from the census database itself? Mahalo ("thank you" in Hawaiian). W Nowicki (talk) 02:53, 21 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi W Nowicki, Thanks for writing. I am only interested in changing the titles, and more importantly the URL to each page as it is easier to navigate to and from and in and out of wikipedia. What happens in the body of the document doesn't concern me as long as the info is notable, accurate and sourced... My personal opinion is that using both is appropriate, similar to what happens on island. Example: government street signs with or without diacriticals, locals using both, shop keepesr using some and not others... For his reason, like most of the residents of Hawai'i, I think it is important to use both.
I would recommend starting a conversation on the wp:mos:hawaii talk page of the article and I'll join you in a couple of days... after finals next week! :) You may find that this discussion has been going on for a while now that the consensus is to use GNIS names in titles for navigation purposes. Correct me if I'm wrong. Again, thanks for your interest. --Travis Thurston+ 18:47, 21 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"vandalism" in edit summary[edit]

Not a big deal, but in your revert you refer to vandalism. To me it seems more likeWP:OR, and perhaps poor writing and other things, but I wouldn't define the term vandalism so broadly so as to include what shows every sign of having been a good faith (although misguided) contribution. Like I said, I agree with what you did in getting rid of that paragraph; I'm just mentioning the edit summary issue in case that is helpful for future edits. Kingdon (talk) 14:39, 14 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I just click "rollback" and must have clicked the vandalism link in when I should have done a general rollback in Twinkle. Sorry about that! --Travis Thurston+ 16:57, 14 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. I figured it was probably something like that. Kingdon (talk) 01:57, 16 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks[edit]

Thanks for telling me. Yeah I uploading a bunch of photos from flicker... no they are all gone and removed from articles. I have no idea why... Let me know if you find out. What a shameJatlas2 (talk) 23:27, 27 July 2009 (UTC) Yeah I'm done uploading pictures from flicker, its too frustrating. I upload them all the exact same way and half or more get secretly deleted while others stay up permanently. And all the pictures have the same licensing so I know that's not the issue. O well... Jatlas2 (talk) 00:01, 28 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Aloha Tower[edit]

Aloha. Just wondering if this was ever resolved. Viriditas (talk) 15:57, 19 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like it hasn't been discussed in a while, but it seems to me that a tall building with a guiding beacon would fit the definition of a lighthouse. If things pick back up in the project page I'll try to chime in, if needed. Thanks for stirring the pot. :) --Travis Thurston+ 19:31, 23 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Rockpile (disambiguation)[edit]

Thanks for your contributions to Rockpile (disambiguation). I am not sure these are notable additions. I have removed them from the list. If you believe you can create articles for these additional items you are free to do so and add them to the lists.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 23:40, 13 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Five volcanoes image[edit]

Thanks for waving whatever magic wand brought the five volcanoes image back. Awien (talk) 23:17, 25 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No problem! They were invisible until I assigned a px size, for whatever reason... --Travis Thurston+ 04:34, 26 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

What's going on with the title of this image? Is it Paia or Makawao? Viriditas (talk) 12:58, 12 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It's Paia on Baldwin Ave. At the time I corrected the description I couldn't find a way to 'move' or delete and load a newly titled version. Any advice? --Travis Thurston+ 23:40, 12 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
To change the file name, I believe you have to upload a duplicate image with a different name, and then tag the old one with a deletion tag. Sorry. Have you seen mynight time shot? It's not the best angle, but I wanted to capture the cool optical illusion in the mural and it looks better at night for some reason. One unexpected outcome of the long exposure was the presence of shadows of trees and objects like signs, which were cast on the storefront wall from the headlights of passing cars. Viriditas (talk) 12:57, 13 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I like it! I guess if Paia had a thriving nightlife it may be wp worthy :) Any places in North Maui/ Hana or Kona that need photos? I'll be island hopping for the christmas break and could find myself going out of my way for some good shots. ~Aloha --Travis Thurston+ 06:29, 14 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

As a major contributor to the article, I am letting you know about the 4th AFD. Ikip (talk) 21:46, 15 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hilo[edit]

Hi, How do is pull a reference from an existing page? Shamhat456 (talk) 09:21, 2 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Just paste the url here. I'll look it over and add the refs to the appropriate passage. You can review my edits and get an idea on how. Thanks for writing! --Travis Thurston+ 22:24, 2 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well Hilo has been in the news due to the Tsunami. Attracted a bunch of vandalism or perhaps well-meaning edits without sources. I have a related question. Please seefile:Hilo.jpg which is not Hilo at all but I think Waikiki. You have a pic file:WaikikiAerial2010.jpg which is similar. Both of these are washed out (the vog) so might be due some color correction or cropping if nothing else. I can do it, but if you have a minute to offer an second opinion that would be great. Mahalo. W Nowicki (talk) 19:47, 28 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I took a look at it a will comment there. Your comments and recommendation to rename the file are accurate as it is indeed Ala Moana and the west end of Waikiki. It is much clearer than my photo. :) --Travis Thurston+ 20:04, 28 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Date of annexation photo[edit]

Newlands Resolution was 1898, so they really celebrated two years before? The place the photo was probably lifted from washere which has the right date of 1898. What made you think it was 1896? I think it was just a typo on the upload.W Nowicki (talk) 02:51, 29 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Then there you go... Nice work! I was only following what the caption said. I had seen some saying 1898, but figured the uploader had it right. I'll change it back if you haven't already. --Travis Thurston+ 21:28, 29 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hilo and Ryan Higa[edit]

I request that you please stop the revertion of the addition of Ryan Higa to the Hilo, Hawaii article as you did here as it is a legitimate alumni and neither vandalism or incorrect content.-WingsGoesWiki (talk) 20:13, 26 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

As I explained on your talk page, Higa is not notable (per wp:note) and the consistent addition by random IP addresses (presumptively the same person with an IP mask) does, in my view, constitute "vandalism". Discuss it on the Hilo talk page if you're interested in having a person without an actual article included on the "notable residents" section. Thanks for bringing it to my attention, but at this point we'll agree to disagree... :) --Travis Thurston+ 23:30, 26 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
