I probably should have explained - the "Awards" section was deleted from Template:Infobox actor, meaning that that part wasn't appearing anyways. Hello Ukexpat. In this edit I took out a comma from the timestamp in your 'Resolved' statement hoping to fool MiszaBot into archiving the report quicker. (The report would normally go away 7 days after the last edit. Adjusting your timestamp means Misza does not see that as an edit). Revert if you disagree! No, the bot works right! It uses a pattern-match in which it expects a comma. Removing the comma makes it think that you didn't leave a timestamp. This is a workaround for absence of a feature of MiszaBot that may be added someday, whereby the date on the 'Resolved' banner is not weighed in the archiving decision. (We would like resolved items to go away quickly so people don't spend any more time studying them). Otherwise people will be deterred from resolving 'old' items since it restarts the seven-day timer on archiving them. Another way you can do the same thing is to sign 'Resolved' banners with three tildes instead of four. EdJohnston (talk) 21:15, 8 June 2009 (UTC)

My First Article

I'm sort-of young so I'm not good at writing articles and I'm really lazy. I didn't bother to read tips. I was just looking through articles on Tsubasa and found that there was no page for the Shunraiki OVAs, so I decided to put a little info on it, just as a base for anyone to add to. I thank you for notifying me and giving me suggestions. I hope I can work to add to that page in the future.

Pat, I know I don't own the Dwight Lauderdale page. Trust me, I get that. Two reverts don't equal Ownership. I don't understand the "Dog's breakfast" expression,however, that article as it stands, is a mess. It's a hatchet job and I attempted to correct that. BTW - you state that my version has MOS issues. Really ? Every claim is backed up by a source, every quote is backed up by a source. Every source is realiable. There are internal links to wiki, persondata is part of the pag. My last version featured trivia and italicised quotes, neither of which are in the version I put back up because they don't fit with MOS. (Do you get the idea that I'm a bit familiar with MOSBIO  ;) ? ) Anyrate, this isn't an ownership issue, it's an disagreement in layout. 18:32, 17 June 2009 (UTC)

MOS doesn't actually specify where the TOC can go (as far as I can see, or am aware). It's reasonable for a table of contents to appear at the top. I've seen TOC both at the top of the page (in some articles, excluding Dwight Lauderdale) and underneath the lede. Hard line breaks huh, I do use
to assist in formatting sentances, it's not a violation of TOC either, and regarding the , that's for the references, still ok by TOC. Butchering the infobox ? Not at all. The infobox was claiming he was born in "Columbus" when all sources in the article state that he was "born in a suburb of Columbus". Therefore, stating he was born in Columbus violates BLP.

Adding a photo

How would I go about adding a pro wrestling photo next to the pro wrestling paragraph on the my Wikipedia page. I have the photo, I just don't know how to go about doing it. I have seen this on other peoples pages quite often and I think it is a helpful tool for the reader. And lastly, how can I better protect my page from vandals? I have seen some pages that have a Lock Symbol on them which means they are semi-protected, not sure what that means. Don't know if something like this would help me protect my page since it was edited by a vandal not too long ago.

Updated GreenPlumbers Company Information

Hello,

Back in March, I had asked for help on getting a page posted, and you edited my page with references to different conditions required by Wikipedia to be able to post.

I have read through most of those links and more that were linked within those links. I have attempted to edit the GreenPlumbers page to reflect modifications that I needed to make based on the requirements. I have included verifiable sources that show GreenPlumbers coverage in the media. I have links to sources within Wikipedia.

I'm not a very good writer, and I am really trying to get an unbiased, non COI, page up. How would I go about getting the idea out there, and providing other editors with the information that I have so far, to see if someone else would post the page, or edit what I have to get a page up?

I'm really not sure what to do at this point. I am at a point where I would appreciate just a little bit more guidance than referrals to more pages.

I just uploaded the photo successfully to my commons account with original size for clarity. All the other previous uploads can be deleted since they are all resized incorrectly and the titles are wrong. I really need your help buddy, sorry to bother you!

I'm so sorry to bother you again my friend, I really need your help here. Today I attempted to upload a couple of photos that I own to Wikipedia Commons so they could be placed on my Wikipedia Page to enhance the artical. I couldn't do it so a friend of mine came by and actually said he did it for me and that it was all set. I saw my Wikipedia page this afternoon and it looked great with the 2 new photos on there. I get a message later in the afternoon from a guy named Martin H. at Wikipedia Commons that the photos that were uploaded were copyright violations. I have no idea what he is talking about, I am the sole owner of those photographs. I can't believe it, even my profile photo he pulled down which was there for over a year. What is going on here? I am new to Wikipedia Commons and I am not even sure how to get in touch with this guy Martin H. to clarify this wrongful accusation. Here is a copy of the letter I sent on the Wikipedia Commons page, not even sure if I sent or placed it in the right place for him to see:

Dear Martin H., what is going on here? The photos that I uploaded and that were labeled today "copyright violation", I own those! The pro wrestler is me. Those are from my personal professional wrestling gallery. I am the sole owner of all those photos, so I am really shocked at what is going on here to say the least. Even my default profile photo was pulled? What is going on here, that profile photo has been there for over a year and that one is from my own home photo album that was taken from the photo of me and my 4 month old son. The only thing I can think of is, I never do my own computer work, my rep or a friend does everything. Well, today I tried to upload these pics myself and had a hard time and a friend of mine finished uploading them for me. He said he thinks they should be all set, but he wasn't 100% sure. I have never used this friend before to assist me with this particular subject and he is not that experienced. Maybe he checked the wrong license box, should he have checked the public domain box? I don't know what he did, I didn't see. I just want my photos back up. I hope I don't sound "irritated", I just want the photos that I own and am very proud of to be displayed in their rightful place...... back on my Wikipedia artical. I look forward to the correction of this copyright violation issue, again, NO copyright violation has taken place by me today or ever. I own these photos and am currently very dissapointed at what I saw take place today. I know you are a professional and I'm sure that after you read this message you will see to it that this issue is corrected.

The problem with my uploaded photos has been fixed. Since I am the sole owner of the photos, editor Martin H. at Wikimedia Commons was able to point me in the right direction and have me send an email to: permissions-commons@wikimedia.org stating that "I hereby assert that I am the creator and/or sole owner of the exclusive copyright to these photographs included" which I signed and dated. Martin H. corrected the issue and ok'd me putting the photos back on my Wikipedia page where they rightfully and ethically belong. Thank You for all your help as this case is officially closed. Put me out of my misery

Thanks for the welcome template, mate. I need help, if you get time: Articles all seem to have empty lines between paragraphs. How is this effect produced? When I put spaces in the edit box, they just seem to get crunched up in the article. I've read through all the help pages and stuff, but I still haven't sussed out this crucial point. It just doesn't seem to be explained anywhere for some reason, or maybe I'm just having an extended mental block. Cheers. (PS, I believe at one point I may have managed to get text started on a new line, but, as I say, I can't get the empty line appearing. Question about Article considered to be deleted

I really appreciate your message and orientation in my first article on Wikipedia. I like to ask you what i have to do correct the article about Reach Canada, because it is not my intention to advertise a product or service of a company.

Reach Canada is a NGO located in Ottawa who helps people with disability to get pro-bono legal help. I am a volunteer who has been collaborating with them since January. My idea was to write about this entity and remark the social work she is doing in Ottawa (never to advertise a product or service) I will really appreciate if you can tell what I have to do to mantain this article or what changes has to be done in order to create a proper one.

I have read all the guides for creating a first article, but it seems to be more difficult than I though.

Headings

A section heading should not duplicate the title/subject of the entire article. Since an individual's article is a biography, there should not be a "Biography" section heading. That's so elemental that it does not explicitly appear in WP:MOS. --Orange Mike | Talk 15:06, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

Thanks. Sorry if I am duplicating this message unnecessarily, but I'm not sure how to work Wikipedia yet. I was under the impression that I had presented data. Data. What is more neutral (a NPOV) than data? The data presented are in the form of academic peer reviewed articles. You said those were RS. I did look at the article “Aspartame controversy”. I also looked at “Aspartame”. I would like to point out that the article, “Aspartame” contains a section called “Controversy”, but no section called “Health Concerns.” The “Monosodium Glutamate,” article has a section called “Health Concerns” that reads like glutamate-industry propaganda, but no section on “Controversy”. Health concerns include brain lesions, endocrine disorders such as obesity and reproductive disorders, learning and behavior disorders, and adverse reactions such as migraine headache, skin rash, nausea and vomiting, atrial fibrillation, seizures, and depression. They weren’t mentioned. I guess I don’t understand the rules. As presently written, “Health concerns” certainly has a POV. Please explain how the former article for "Uh Huh" was an "attack article" and why you nominated and succeeded in getting it deleted speedily. The way I originally wrote the article was explaining its place as a "catch phrase" and slogan for Diet Pepsi. As the article has now been deleted, I can't attest to any edits made by other editors that might have taken it in that direction. I do not appreciate the lecture you added to my talk page concerning this article, either. As you could see if you had looked at my edit history, I have been a Wikipedian for nearly 5 years and I have written countless articles. I don't need a lecture. UKExpat, user Student7, having accused me of using the Syro Malabar Catholic Church page as my "Soapbox" I have chosen to delete my contribution. It seems that there is too much political dynamite in expressing a perspective that does not run along the accepted political lines. The "fixed" images uploaded on the page speaks volumes about the political slant of the page. IMHO, it is better to let readers form their own impressions after visiting all the links of the Syro Malabar archdioceses in Kerala. Wikipedia should never be used as a serious source of reference by anyone interested in scholarly pursuits. Even links and references provided can be to confirm a biased perspective. Journal of Collective negotiation

Even in the form you tagged it, the article was more informative than promotional--it has been improved by some other editors since then--I removed the speedy tag. The description of a journal often includes some promotional wording, and this is easy enough to remove. CSD G11 is a tricky rationale--there have been several strong calls for removing it entirely because of lack of a clear standard. Myself, I find it very useful for quite a lot of hopelessly bad articles, and I would hate to see it disappear. (I know it may sound unexpected for me to be defending the retention of deletion criteria, but I'm in the highest 10% of speedy deletors among active admins--#143 from the topUser:JamesR/AdminStats) So please help me keep it in the rule, by using it only when there is no possible stub of an article present. I am sure that Chris Eccleshall is regarded as an important figure or is widely cited by their peers or successors. Can you give some idea of how to document this? I have scans of several magazine articles which might show his notability.

conflict of interest vs. right and wrong

Thank you for your response, I have read Wikipedia's policies but didn't feel like I was going against the nature of the intended purpose of this site - please read on.

I would think a competitor would have a conflict of interest, just as much as a proponent. The information I submitted was totally objective and came from the book that the initial author of the posting mentioned, but did not provide reference or a solid basis of argument for.

If posts of opinion should not be created, I would think there is nothing wrong with providing the facts. If someone said Wikipedia was created by a fourth grade genius, and it was started by an idiot savant - would you not correct that data, even though you have a close connection (and thus a conflit of interest) with it. If someone said Questia is better than Wikipedia because you don't provide any valuable information, would you feel that is fair enough to leave it be?

If we are not allowed to provide information about our intellectual property, and submit information that is common knowledge within the industry - I would like to know what can be done to keep competitors from negatively slurring our image and providing mis-information to the masses.

My company just wants a fair shot, that's all.

Howdy and thanks for the note. I went ahead and added a link to the New York Times article which I had linked on the talk page. Of course, running down speedy deletions is always about trying to get the best outcome for the encyclopedia, so even if the article doesn't assert notability if it is probably notable I tend to keep it. In this case, deleting the article because it lacks notability within it seems unjustified. While a single NYT article may not entirely establish notability per WP:CORP, it at least moved it out of a speedy category in my view. Feel free to nominate it for AfD if you are convinced the site still lacks notability or verifiable coverage (I don't know if it does, I haven't done any searching). That isn't reasonable. I was heavily involved in creating the BLP policy. I can assure you that this is not a violation of it. Every reliable media source in the world has broadcast or published, or will broadcast or publish, these images. We do what the reliable sources do. Also, please don't comment it out. Constructive?

I was correcting one form of subjectivity within the article and replacing it with another. It is factually incorrect to state Rangers are the most successful club in Scotland. That passage of the article was intended to glorify a team which have been fined and cautioned by FIFA for the racist and sectarian behaviour of their fans. They are openly known to fans of Scottish football as 'Scotland's Shame' and the inclusion of that nickname was purely factual. GolfRiTe School of Xcellence

The article I had posted about the golf school migtht have seemed like a promotional piece but I think it's a very unique institution. It perhaps is the first of it's kind in India and it being located in Panipat deserves a listing so people know that Panipat has something like this. Similarly, the junior golf tour in India deserves a mention on the golf section of the 'Sports in India' page.

To answer your question, the answer is yes. This picture was taken by a U.S. Army soldier, a Lieutenant Colonel and Batallion Commander, during a visit to the field, which means he was definitely on official duty. He may or may not have taken the picture for personal use, but he was definitely on official duty when he took it. Does that mean that the image can be tagged as public domain? The author won't have a problem with that anyway.

Thanks, Ukexpat. I've already received an e-mail answer from the permission folks. They want a clear statement from the author that the image will be releasable to the public, which is understandable. The original e-mail just stated, "Bill, you can use any of my pictures that you want," or something like that. I have forwarded their e-mail to the author with specific instructions for him to reply to me and clearly state that Wikipedia has permission to release the image to the public under their license if he's OK with it. Hopefully, that will resolve it. And I hope that Wikipedia will give a little more time for the author to respond before they delete the image. The author is probably in his eighties now and I doubt that he checks his e-mail every day.

Another point I've been wondering about that you raised, Ukexpat, if you don't mind answering a question outside the scope of this specific Wikipedia copyright issue. The one about a soldier taking the picture while on official duty. There are a lot of pictures on the web site where that one is published, and the webmaster has put a blanket copyright statement on all the material there. Only I now realize that a large percentage of those pictures were taken by the soldiers, including me, while they were on official duty. Heck, a soldier is almost always on official duty while he's overseas in the field. So, even if the pictures were intended for personal use, if they were taken while on duty, does that make them all public domain? I don't want to cause any trouble for the webmaster, he is my friend and I have no intention of using any of those pictures without permission, but I'd just like to know what the law says; he might want to know too. George Zinkhan

I am George Zinkhan's son. His body was found on a Saturday. My Aunt called the coroner and claimed the body on Monday morning. My Aunt and I were in constant contact with the coroner during the week that followed. We made arrangements for his body to be transferred to a morgue on a Friday. CNN was contacted by my family when CNN printed the article about my Dad's body being found, and CNN immediately took the article down from their links on its main page because of its insinuation that my Dad's body was headed for a pauper's grave. Yesterday, when reading my Dad's Wikipedia page, I found that the CNN article is still archived in its incorrect form on their website, and I notified them.

The sentence I changed is: "Zinkhan's body was claimed by a son from a previous marriage one day before it was scheduled for burial in a pauper's grave by the Athens-Clarke County coroner's office."

I changed it to something like: "Zinkhan's body was claimed by his son."

Hi UKexpat,

I see you have moved J.E.S.Lawrence to John E.S. Lawrence, which I presume is not unconnected to my posting of this page on the Wikipedia:Conflict of interest/Noticeboard as I see you are active in helping deal with issues raised on this page. As you have some expertise in COI matters which I have not I am a little confused by the purpose of the move of the article to John E.S.Lawrence unless this is a preliminary to dealing with the COI issue viz: the editing of this page by User talk:Jeslw who it appears could be the same person or someone with a connection to the subject of the above article. Since posting at COI Noticeboard I see the same editor has also amended Lawrence Peaks again adding a fairly detailed reference to J.E.S. Lawrence attributing the person to a range of mountains in Antartica which is probably accurate however, as elsewhere the citing by the editor is back to another uncited page in WP and does not meet WP:V. not sure if I should enter this discussion (am still trying to figure out the `rules' here) but please be assured that all the refs on the Lawrence Peaks page are entirely accurate, and independently verifiable... there have been steady research publications since the late 1960s surrounding the geology of that part of the Transantarctic Range, as one can quickly see by googling "Lawrence Peaks" or "Hancox" Mariner Glacier, in fact I would like to add more to that page on the peaks named after each of the other members of that expedition...thanks Jeslw (talk) 02:23, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

Irving Equipment

What counts as a verifiable resource? They're in newspapers and industry related magazines (Internation Crane Magazine and American Cranes and Transport)... do those things count? Notability

Dear Orangemike,

Although he might not be in Forbes of Wall Street Journal, he is the President GMAC Real Estate International Properties Group and a Principle of RECAP. There are plenty of other Presidents of companies listed on Wikipedia that are significantly less notable. George was the General Manager of the World Trade Center in NYC for 12 years, he wrote a book on real estate negotiating that has been given multiple awards, he has been the President of 2 extremely well known and large real estate firms in the United States for over 20 years. I'd be more than happy to remove some of the advertising language and fixing citations, but I would hope that he is notable enough to be on Wikipedia. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

My rejected corrections/revisions to MAUSER HSc text

I am totally confused regarding the rejection of my corrected text to the MAUSER HSC topic. The previous version had numerous errors and omissions which I attempted to correct. CraneCAD

Hey... I asked a question a few days ago and haven't heard back... not sure if you missed it or not, about CraneCAD, where [Irving Equipment] is a privately owned company and the software was develloped in-house, there has been media coverage of it (already cited on the page) and the rest of the information would come from their website, I found a great document with lots of information, but it was written by the engineer who develloped it and is on the company website... does that count as a reference or would I have to phrase the description / details of the program to be more "Irving Equipment says..." or something? Frustrated About Image

Hello Ukexpat. You and I talked a while ago about an image, Topo Surveyor.jpg, that was deleted because I originally had a vague statement from the author that granted me permission to use his image but didn't specifically state that it could be public domain. So I followed up and acquired a more specific e-mail from the author saying that he released the image to the public domain. I sent that to Permissions and I am still waiting for a reply. You told me to wait for their response before re-uploading the image again because it could take a couple of days. I am now frustrated because it has been TEN DAYS since I sent them the author's e-mail. I can only assume that it got lost somewhere. I would like to start over and re-upload the image, into Wikimedia Commons this time (I uploaded it directly into Wikipedia English before), and send the author's e-mail release to them, perhaps with a new name for the image. What do you think? The author's e-mail is clear; he used the same wording that Wiki uses: "I, the copyright holder of this work, hereby release it into the public domain. This applies worldwide. In case this is not legally possible, I grant any entity the right to use this work for any purpose, without any conditions, unless such conditions are required by law." Incidentally, the deleter of the image, JPG-GR, told me to feel free to re-upload after I told him I had a clear statement now from the author, but, since you have advised me well before, I would like your advice. Also, again, if I do upload the image for Commons this time, should I give it a different name? Thanks.
