linguist assistance[edit]

You are listed in the linguist by profession category. Would you please look at the discussion at Talk:Caron? It has been suggested that professional opinions are required to resolve the dispute there.

Dance capitalization[edit]

I noticed that you listed yourself as a linguist. There is currently a dispute at the Lindy Hop article the Dance WikiProject about the capitalization of dances that could use the expertise of a linguist. If you think you might be able to help, we would certainly appreciate your comments. Thanks! --Cswrye 05:30, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

Maly Vysotsky[edit]

Yupik, by "conventional name" do you mean the name "that's commonly used in English" (as per WP:ENGLISH)? Because, if that's the case, you are incorrect. "Malyj Vysotskij" is not an English name, it's merely one of possible transliterations of a geographic name (namely, GOST 16876-71); one that's used by Russians and, consequently, by Finns—hence you get the impression the name is conventional. We don't use that particular system in Wikipedia; modified BGN/PCGN romanization (WP:RUS) is used instead, especially when it comes to geographic names, because otherwise, using your logic, every single Russian location transliterated via GOST would become a "conventional English name". "Conventional" names include "Moscow" and "Saint Petersburg", which are included in virtually every English dictionary, but not "Malyj Vysotskij", which is virtually unknown outside the area of the canal.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 18:12, 12 October 2006 (UTC)

Катя, since this is English Wikipedia, the transliteration system that specifically targeted English-speakers was the most logical choice. BGN/PCGN conventions are used by governments of both the United States and the United Kingdom.

As for HAM operators—again, there are HAM operators in quite a few Russian settlements, and all those operators probably use GOST. That doesn't automatically make those GOST-transliterated names "conventional in English". Pretty much the same goes for the EU conventions—the fact that you can't find it there just confirms that the location is quite obscure and doesn't really have a conventional English name. As for the treaties, am I correct that they would have been signed by Russia and Finland—countries in none of which English is an official language? I don't know about Finland, but Russia uses GOST in its English-language treaties—the whole purpose of GOST is to provide means to render Russian names in Latin script, and international treaties certainly qualify.

In conclusion, if the topic of transliterating Russian really interests you that much, I invite you to participate in WP:CYR policy thinktank discussions. WP:CYR's goal is to establish a set of rules that would govern romanization of all languages that use Cyrillics. Once it's adopted, it will replace WP:RUS and a handful of similar existing policies. It's been awfully quiet there for a while now, but if you come up with fresh ideas, comments, or just let your point of view known, there is a good chance you'll be heard by more people than just me.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 19:05, 12 October 2006 (UTC)

FOR THE LOVE OF FINLAND[edit]

HI thanks for filling my stub a bit. Wikipedia is extremely poorly covered in such areas. Important actors and films in other countries are only about 0.00001% covered. Wikipedia really needs to become less Anglo-centric. What projects are you working on. I need recruitments in my film work. Ernst Stavro Blofeld 14:16, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

Superb excellent work mate. This is what wikipedia is about each person using their abilities. I am highly impressed with you. Ernst Stavro Blofeld 20:45, 28 October 2006 (UTC)

Superb work. Well done. I also noticed that you started a Finnish sports club. I categorized this for you. Nice going/ I haven't looked but there might be info on Finnish wikipedia for other politicians I started in the National Coalition Party (Finland). THey look really good with the photos but need work. I have spent a while today on Seven Years in Tibet working on it from a stub and List of James Bond henchmen merging all the small stubs into one article. It looks really good. Biedis Heikka[edit]

This is not related to Wikipedia, but my mother is singing a text in "lappish" and would like to know a translation. We have come as far as that it must be in some Sami language, but which one, we're not sure. Since you're sme-2, I thought, perhaps can you identify the text and perhaps tell-us what it means? :)

Na, Piete Heikka snuuren aalttudža jo nuu,
de Ko maanaditte,
Loi, loi, lonko, loi
Na, lokkameattun thaalla da la,
Kultte loi, loi,

Loi, loi, lonko, loi

We are not even sure if the words are concatenated in the right way. And most diacritics are missing, too.

Quote translation request[edit]

Hey. I saw you on Wikipedia:Translators available, although I've noticed your work elsewhere too. I have two short Finnish language quotes on Henri Toivonen, which I have translated into English myself. The whole article might be a mess, but I'd like to know how a professional linguist would translate Ei siinä meinaa pää pysyä mukana. I'm a native speaker of Finnish, but can't come up with a suitable phrase in English. The full quotes in Finnish can be found in the article at Henri Toivonen#Death. Thanks, Prolog 18:02, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

Mikkal Morottaja[edit]

The short answer is, someone tagged it for db-band, and I agreed with them since the article did not even assert notability. I saw the article on fi:, it pretty much the same thing as what was deleted here. The long answer is, if you can present an assertion of notability, perhaps in reference to WP:MUSIC, I'll be happy to undelete and send to a full AfD. - crz crztalk 12:18, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

Yupik wrote:

What criteria for notability would you like in order for the Mikkal Morottaja article to be left in place? Of the criteria for notability listed on the Wikipedia:Notability (music), he fulfills at least #1 and #7, #4 I'm not sure about, but I believe to be true, too. I've requested clarification for notability for musicians and groups of minority groups at Wikipedia_talk:Notability_%28music%29#Determining_notability_for_music_in_minority_groups; I would appreciate it if you would take the time to read it and comment if you feel that there is need to. As a side note, your deletion affected the Finnish and Saame wikipedias leaving them with broken links. -Yupik 08:35, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

Hi. I didn't delete the article; I merely nominated it for deletion. The decision to delete was made by Crzrussian, who was already provided his explanation above.

This issue is not whether the subject of the article meets the notability criteria, but whether the article makes that clear; as it was it did not. To give the article a much better chance of being kept, the best thing to do is cite sources which verify the subject's notability; preferably reliable sources, such as coverage in an independent news publication. Providing a reference for any claim that satisfies one of the music notability criteria should be sufficient. Thanks – Gurch 13:41, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

Sakha[edit]

On an unrelated note—I noticed that you have ru:Якутия#Административное деление in your to-do list. Are you planning to do something beyond what administrative divisions of Sakha already has? I am just curious—I am working on these administrative divisions series quite extensively and can always use some help. Best,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 14:36, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

No, I don't really have much of a schedule. I am currently putting finishing touches on administrative divisions of Adygea, which is now an FL candidate (feel free to opine there, by the way), and then I promised to start working on administrative divisions of Tatarstan to bring it to featured status, which will take me a while. I have no definite plans beyond that.
If transliteration issues are the only thing preventing you from working on Sakha, don't let it stop you. First, transliteration guidelines are all spelled out in WP:RUS. Second, names of all major administrative units (uluses, settlements, naslegs) are already available through administrative divisions of Sakha; just use those. Third, even if you make a mistake or two during your work, I can always fix it for you. No matter which area of Russia I'm going to be working on, I can always make time to help a person like you who is willing to cover another area. By the way, may I ask you why are you interested in Sakha at all, let alone in its administrative divisions? Just curious. Best,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 13:22, 10 January 2007 (UTC)
You're welcome. By the way, for user ru-1 you pulled more than a decent translation. Looks like your Russian is not as rusty as you lead us to believe :) Anyway, all I did is to re-format the article the way other articles on Russian settlements are formatted, corrected terminology in a few places (e.g., a vilage should never be referred to as a town), and added Census numbers. Speaking of which, if you think you could use Census information in future, just send me an email, and I'll send you both 1989 and 2002 Census sheets. As for the official Census site, it looks that they are having problems with the main page (again). The actual data are still available, though. You can still access Census documents if you start somewhere in the middle, or you can access it via google cache.
If I can be of any further assistance, let me know. I'm always happy to help. Best,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 13:20, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

I don't remember where it was, sorry. I'll try to find it for you. The person I talked with, however, was an English major and a native speaker. Also, note that Britannica does not use articles when referring to raions either[1][2], so that must be correct.

As for the Census, you are still welcome to email me if you'd like the data sheets. I have them in Excel format for both 1989 and 2002.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 20:21, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

Kemi Sami[edit]

Hi. I see that you have recently edited the Kemi Sami article. I have made an attempt to translate the Swedish version of the first poem on the page to English (a non-poetic translation). Maybe you might check it out to see if I've made any gross errors! The person who requested the translation on the article's talk page as retired from Wikipedia, so I thought I'd turn to people who edited the article recently. Also, is it worth my while trying to translate the second poem in a similar fashion?. Thanks, Pikiwedian 21:45, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

Personal attacks[edit]

Stop harassing me! Give it up! Yupik is just trying to tease me. A finnish man critizing everything I write for the english Wikipedia, checking every article that I make. Wikipedia is not his utmost interest, but to exert typical finnish social control over individualists is. They hate us here you know. Besides, I think it's against the rules to type in finnish to the english wikipedia. Go back to the finnish forum! Teemu Ruskeepää 16:14, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

Ter Saami[edit]

Hi. As you can see, I haven't quite lost my motivation... I recently expanded the Ter Sami stub a bit, inspired by an article in Kide which included some good information. I could really use such to improve these articles as well... --AAikio 07:14, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

Languages[edit]

People keep asking me this! I have no doubt that some people do speak many languages. Obviously, many educated continental Europeans speak 2-3 at a minimum. And some people, like you, are linguists and professional translators. But I don't believe for a minute that all the people who have these userboxes actually speak as many languages as they claim. For example, there is one editor I have dealt with a lot who is a very pompous, pretentious jerk. If the CV on his user page is to be believed, he went to a small state university and is now working in some mid-level computer job. However, he has about 11 language userboxes, including Greek and Arabic. Even if he had perhaps studied these languages as a hobby, or travelled at some point to all these places and picked up some of the lingo, he certainly does not "speak" them all, and the userboxes serve as additional puffery on a userpage that is already quite puffed. It was in response to dealing with him that I put that message on my page. But since then I have encountered a lot of people who use those boxes like intellectual window dressing, and it irks me just a little.-Dmz5*Edits**Talk* 03:44, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

Very glad to hear from you. I stopped contacting you as I wasn't getting a reply so figured you were busy. It would be great for you to translate some info from the website of Aika Tappaa. I have been busy with Category:Argentine films check it out now 280 films!!!! at christmas there were just 9!!!! Ernst Stavro Blofeld 11:32, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

Divorce? Ah messy business. Clearly you have been occupied with more important things!!!!! Its great to hear from an old friend anyway. Yes I have set up a mini project for Wikipedia:WikiProject Argentina/Cinema of Argentina and eventually plan to do the same for each country including Finland to organize cinema work better. If you don't have time for starting articles, please help out by adding missing films in the relevant years to List of Finnish films now in time order. Cheers Ernst Stavro Blofeld 11:49, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

Thats a shame. I have never been married yet so I wouldn't really understand but am very sympathetic and hope you get through it fine. Anyway what would be very helpful is if you could add the films in Category:Finnish films to the List of Finnish films and add in the direcotr actors and notes on the films. It is practically empty as I haven't got around to it yet. CHeers Ernst Stavro Blofeld 11:58, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

Ufimsky District[edit]

Hi, Yupik! Yumatovo and Oktyabrsky are not посёлки, they are both сёла. The full name of Yumatovo, by the way, is "село Санатория Юматово им. 15-летия БАССР". But, these two account for the missing two selsoviets; thanks for catching that. I'll work on this article a little more to polish it further. As for the "pochinok", this type of settlement does not exist in Bashkortostan (they only types of rural localities they have are "село", "деревня", "аул", and "хутор"). In any case, "pochinok" is a type of rural locality, not urban. Hope this helps! Let me know if you see anything else that's out of order.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 15:04, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, I agree. That name is a fine example of the Soviet system :) As for the types of settlements in each federal subject, it is my ultimate goal to put that information into the "administrative divisions" series. Currently, however, only Adygea has that information (you may also be interested in seeing its revised version, which has more details). If you need that information for another federal subject, let me know, I'll look it up for you. It is, unfortunately, not something I can quickly compile, so it'll have to be on case-by-case basis. Best,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 15:45, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

Seltso[edit]

Yes, I do. In short, if you translate it as "village", you won't be very far off from the truth (as far as I know, there is no exact translation of this term anyway). The long answer requires some explanation. As you probably know, historically there were two main types of "villages" in Russia—деревня (derevnya) and село (selo). The difference was that the latter had a church, and the former did not. Churches, of course, were built in larger settlements, so selos as a rule had more inhabitants than derevnyas. Now, seltsos were different in the sense that they were villages around estates of pomeshchiks (помещики, landowners). They were usually comparable in size with selos, but they either only had small chapels or did not have religious facilities at all. Hence the intermediate status of such settlements—seltsos. Hope this helps!

On an unrelated note—have you received the Census spreadsheets I emailed you last week? I just want a confirmation—my email service acts up every now and then, so email I send does not always get to the recepient. If you haven't received my email, let me know, I'll re-send it.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 14:04, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

Hmm, I forgot about Seltso. I don't think it's a good idea to touch that article, but having seltso (disambiguation) does make sense. I'll make that one today.
As for the spreadsheets, I'll re-send them to you tonight when I get home and will keep re-sending them once every day until I get your confirmation. The attachment is a ~700 KB ZIP file.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 14:50, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

And just in case you run out of Catalan material to translate, I've filed a translation request at Wikipedia:Translation/Nubia about getting the Catalan article translated since it is so much more extensive. How much Catalan have you studied by the way? Quite impressive :) -Yupik 15:25, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

Thanks. No formal study, just good Spanish, moderate Romanian, a few visits to Barcelona adding up to about 8-10 weeks, and forcing myself when I'm there to do my best with menus, museum wall texts, the occasional copy of Avui, etc., and then what I've been doing here on Wikipedia.
I'll probably get Gran i General Consell started in a week or two, if no one beats me to it. - Jmabel | Talk 18:44, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

Deaf-mute[edit]

Hi Yupik. I'm seeking opinions and possible support for an issue in which I'm in a debate with other Wikipedians. I'm trying to change indiscrimant use of the term "deaf-mute" in describing deaf people in general. To see some comments related to the issue, see Talk:The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, as well as my own Talk page, User talk:Ward3001. You can also follow the links to other discussions. Right now I'm about the only person addressing the issue because deaf people are such a small minority. Other Wikipedians, with apparently no prior knowledge of the issue, are reverting my edits. If you're interesting in expressing your opinion, feel free to do so. If you wish to discuss further please leave me a message on my Talk page. Thanks. Ward3001 18:04, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

Speedying foreign-language articles[edit]

I'd suggested to Strangerer that he list the ones he finds at PNT, since he was CSD-listing them as being "nonsense" earlier. Obviously a good quantity of what turns up at PNT is speedyable, but I think it's preferable to send them there in case there's an improvement rather than just Speedy-list them straight off the bat. Finnish cinema[edit]

Just to let you know that this template has been created -please add it to every article related to the Cinema of Finland including films, actors direcotrs editors cinemagraphers, proidcuers etc. I hope you approve

♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "I've been expecting you" 21:33, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

Unbelievably a certain user has now put all of the cinema templates up for deletion including that good looking Finnish one above. I beelive they serve a great purpose for establishing a better understanding and connection between articles of each industry to make them flow. But in totla haste he has gone ahead and proposed the lot. If my hard work is deleted I really feel that I should leave wikipedia for good. I am willing to limit the use of the American template but not the others. It will affect thousands of articles already.

Please leave your view at Wikipedia:Templates for deletion/Log/2007 March 13 THanks ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "I've been expecting you" 14:14, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi Yupik, thanks for the note, I've deleted the article accordingly. I'm sorry if you felt as though I wasn't taking your tagging of the article seriously, or something like that; just that I've run across some articles which could be translated, but people have just tagged them for speedy deletion and left them. Just hi[edit]

I saw your name come up a few times on Wikipedia:Pages needing translation into English so I looked you up. Hi! Your name caught my eye, and when I read on your user page that the name is unique, I knew I had to write. In one of the linguistics classes I took in college, I had to memorize the names of all indigenous North American languages (including their taxonomy - bleah). So the name did not strike me as odd at all.

I saw that you have contributed to some Turkish-language articles. Why don't you list Turkish as one of your language userboxes? Same for Faeroese.

Translation[edit]

Hello Yupik.

I have requested today a translation here [3] still, since it's the first time I use this wonderful tool, I am just slightly concerned that I did something wrong, because another request which you made just after is already displayed in the main translation page but the one I did is not.

Would you please advise whether I did something wrong or it is just that it needs some time to show up?

Thanks. Mountolive | Talk 07:03, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for your help with that, Yupik. And....a-hem....now? what's the deal? just cross my fingers and pray so that some charming man decides to start it? ;) Mountolive | Talk 04:58, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

More uluses[edit]

Thanks for the notice, Yupik! I'll take a look at those articles a bit later and edit if necessary.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 12:08, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

I am not done yet :) As a matter of fact, I'm working on the ulus article right now. As for the distinction between a nasleg and a village, a nasleg is actually a territory comprising several villages and territories around them. Sometimes, however, it may be just one village and territories around it, which is precisely the case with Churapcha and Churapchinsky Nasleg. That probably is the source of the confusion you mentioned. The bottom line is that the area of the nasleg is always more or equal to the area(s) of the village(s) it comprises. Hope it helps.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 19:40, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
Problems? What problems? I hope you aren't pacing yourself so I could keep up! Don't worry, I may not review each district article immediately after you release it, but you can count on me getting to them all eventually :)—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 12:15, 11 April 2007 (UTC)
The only reason why we only have the Russian names is because I only know the Russian names :) If I knew Sakha, I'd most certainly add the Sakha names as well. If you could recruit a native speaker for this task, that'd be just great; meanwhile we'll have to make do with Russian. Thanks!—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 15:26, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

Skolt Sami articles[edit]

Hello! You're bot has been changing the proper Skolt symbol (´) to ', so we end up with changes like Puõ´ttem→Puõ'ttem. The correct char is, however, ´, so if you could have the bot change them back and then start ignoring them, it would be nice and something that I'd appreciate greatly. Pjacklam has a subpage in the Norwegian wiki that has all of the special symbols needed for the different Sámi languages. Thanks :) -Yupik 21:50, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for explaining this to me, and sorry for messing up your articles. Luckily, back in February, I changed the way my bot treats ´s: it now only converts them to apostrophes when they're found in common English contractions. Unfortunately, I won't be able to get my bot to revert the changes, but I will go back and fix them up manually myself. Cheers, CmdrObot 22:01, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

Rafael Ernesto Flores-Obando[edit]

Thanks for your note about Rafael Ernesto Flores-Obando. I agree that four publications is hardly conclusive proof of notability. The most I said was that the articvel as written appears to make a claim of notability, which is enough to take it out of speedy-delete territory. At an Afd, furhter evidence of notability might turn up, or it might not. I tend to apply the speedy delete criteria quite strictly.

I am glad that you were able to read this article and tagged it on the basis of its content, rather than just because it was not written in English. I fear that my command of any languge other than english is quite limited. I have seen a number of articles written in languages other than english speedy-deleted on that basis alone. I shouldn't have assumed that that was the case in this instance, however. Thamks for your note. DES (talk) 05:29, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

Pages Needing Translation[edit]

Hello... first of all, thank you for your hard work over at PNT. There's a little issue I'd like to point out, though... could you possibly let articles such as "Archivio Libri Italiani su Calcolatore Elettronico" listed a little longer, in case anything useful does come out of nowhere? I'm not talking about more than a day or maybe 12 hours. Of course, it's only a suggestion, so take it as a grain of salt, but nevertheless I think that the project could benefit from that. Best regards, --Sn0wflake 19:55, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

Song of the Tibetan Lama[edit]

Thanks for the invite. I think the prod is appropriate - the uploader should be urged to contribute more than just the CD insert. I looked at the page regarding the singer whose album this is. There is a list of about 10 or 15 similar CDs. This is the only one with its own page. The article itself seems notable enough to me, but I don't get involved with bio-notability issues. I think the best translation of the title of the album (and the song it is named after) is probably Song of the Tibetan Lama rather than ...of the Tibetan Lamas. If it were plural, the last word would be in the plural in the Russian. It's probably my mistake from before, but I don't think it matters. I suspect the article will self-destruct in five days. Sami articles[edit]

Hi Yupik, and thank you for creating and improving many articles about the Sami people. But we have sometimes created parallel forks about the same topic like yesterdays articles about the Norwegian Sami Association (my fault should have used english spelling of Sami). I therefore think we should somehow coordinate our work. Perhaps the best way to do it is to clean up the Sami people article and adding redlinks for articles we think should be created? I believe that approach is doable since the number of articles about the Sami is relatively small. An additional benefit is that a better organized main article makes it easier for readers to find the articles. Let me know what you think. Best regards Labongo 20:08, 11 August 2007 (UTC).

Lovozero[edit]

Just wanted to let you know that the Russian city infobox was design for cities/town only. It is very poorly suited to rural localities such as Lovozero.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 01:28, 18 August 2007 (UTC)

This was actually discussed before, and the consensus was that having such an infobox at this point would be premature. There are not that many articles about Russian rural localities yet, and those which exist are so short that any kind of infobox would easily overwhelm them. A map and a coat of arms can always be added to the articles directly, and considering the recent improvement of the coordinates service (have you tried clicking on that globe next to the coordinates of any place yet? :)) even having a map is no longer that important. Let me know if this does not answer your question. Thanks!—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 18:26, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

Speedies[edit]

Thanks for your note, and it's my pleasure -- once I looked at your user page and realized that you were competent to assess the quality of articles in languages I don't read (which is to say, all of them except English and French) I was happy to accept your assessments. I'm not sure if I can do anything about the Japanese gentleman, but I'll think about the best way to approach it and give it a try for both our sakes. If there's anything further, I'm at your service. Accounting4Taste 23:30, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

I've left him a polite note and offered my help to find translation resources (by which I mean things like Babelfish). If there's a web-based resource you can recommend that works well in Japanese to English, I'd be grateful to hear about it so that I can pass it along. Accounting4Taste 00:09, 9 November 2007 (UTC)

Language policy in Finland[edit]

Hi. I have a question for you. After creating the List of Swedish-speaking and bilingual municipalities of Finland (which is, by the way, [[Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/List of Swedish-speaking and bilingual municipalities of Finland|an FLC candidate), I realised this area should perhaps be a little better organised. We have Swedish-speaking Finns, Languages of Finland, Finland's language strife and Mandatory Swedish. What we do not have is de:Finnische Sprachenpolitik / fi:Suomen kielipolitiikka. Should we? Or does that content belong in Finland's language strife? Either way, it seems there's some translation to be done, if you're interested. Biruitorul 17:12, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

Laura Isabel Caro Beltran[edit]

Thanks for the note. Since I don't speak Spanish, I ran the text through Babelfish; because of its usual rather poor quality, I couldn't be sure, but there was a possibility in my mind that she was a TV star. Nyttend 13:24, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

環宇財務顧問[edit]

As an aftrerthought, I do not think it is your fault for not detecting that 環宇財務顧問 was a copyvio. I could manage to locate the original creator's other copyvio quick enough, but it took me a bit of playing around with the URL of his source website before I got the source page for this one.

By the way, it is impossible to discover copy-and-pastes in Chinese using Google. It was totally useless when checking against this one. Or if Googling's possible, the method of doing so correctly eludes me. I wonder how the Chinese Wikipedia ferrets them out (they have a copyvio listing that's not as long as hours, but not short either, last I looked). Use of WP:PROD for resolving WP:PNT[edit]

In general, yes, PROD would be an ok way to address deletion of things that have passed through WP:PNT and not resulted in an English translation. The reason why I would favor PROD is that there is the non-zero chance that a native speaker might become aware of the article outside the context of WP:PNT and step forward to do a translation; that is, I'm assuming that there is a practical but low level of controversy in the deletion. In the case of the AFD that I closed, WP:CSD#A2 would have also been appropriate as the article had been transwikied to a non-English Wikipedia. I didn't want to bring up CSD in the AFD closure because I think that CSD is in general heavily overused, and mentioning in this context would appear to be an invitation for people to speedy anything non-English even though the criterion is worded more narrowly than that. Sorry for assuming people cut corners (I'm still assuming good faith). --User:Ceyockey (talk to me) 14:20, 25 November 2007 (UTC)

User Vuo (a Finn) is making some editorial changes to it, it seems. But as an expert in Finnish, you may also want to take a look at improving it, if you'd like. I'm not a professional translator, so I know there's room for improvement.

"Yup'ik"[edit]

On your user page you say no one shares your bizarre name... if your name is actually Yupik- did you know that Yup'ik is a tribe of indigenous peoples from Southwest Alaska? Nice people.
You probably did, but what the hey. : ) L'Aquatiquetalk 04:28, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

Yehp! It's not my real name, my real name is much more mundane, although it's the combination of my first and last name that make it one-of-a-kind. I spent some time in the late 80s in Nome with Yup'ik speakers and then across the strait on the Soviet side :D What kind of flute do you play? -Yupik (talk) 08:58, 3 May 2008 (UTC)
Wow, see now I'm super embarrassed because I completely forgot I had left this note here. In fact, I was perusing WP Deaf and saw the name and was like, hey man, that rocks, cool name. I came here to leave you a message to say that I liked your name, then remembered... already did! I am such a space cadet at times, it makes me want to crawl in a hole.
To answer your question, I just play the C flute, nothing special. I am extraordinarily jealous of your grasp of languages, by the way. I'm quite good at handling the written side of languages, but when it comes to listening to them my APD kicks in and gives me all manner of trouble. Oh well, can't have the cake and eat it too, ouais? L'Aquatique[talk] 06:37, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

Translation Question[edit]

Hi there,

Apologies for asking you without knowing you first, but I have this strong feeling you could be able to guide me in my quest. I am working on a set of pages related to numismatics, specifically of the Euro zone. Right now I am working on Euro gold and silver commemorative coins (Finland); if you are interested in seen other works, the portal is Euro gold and silver commemorative coins where articles of other countries can be seen. For the Finish article, As you might see all the numismatic data and pictures are there, but the designs of the coins are so abstract that just looking at them a description can not be made. There are tons of pages that describe these coins, with the original explanation of the design, but all of them in either Finish or Swedish. What is the easiest way to get help on the translations? As you can imagine we are talking about one paragraph per coin, which is not labor intensive and I do not mind to do just one coin a day or something similar in order not to burden the translators. Any advice?

Thanks, Miguel.mateo (talk) 07:25, 19 June 2008 (UTC)

The official way is to create a page at Wikipedia:Translation and leave the same request on Wikipedia:Translation/*/Lang/fi, but I'm not sure how active anyone is right now. I myself am without an Internet connection until probably the end of the year, otherwise I would volunteer :) You might try contacting JIP as he might know who to ask if he doesn't have time. Good luck with the project! -Yupik (talk) 11:27, 19 June 2008 (UTC)

"Germanisms" page[edit]

Do you suspect the Germanisms page is too full of baloney to be worth keeping? I was starting to copy-edit it, recognizing that it lacked verification for almost all items. Then I noticed you zapped the Finnish section, which made me wonder if perhaps the whole thing is BS. Jlg4104 (talk) 04:21, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

I wonder if it would be worth salvaging -- perhaps a page on "Loan words (verifiable)" for loans to and from various languages? It's an important topic, or at least interesting, and it would be a shame to toss the whole thing if some at least is good. Jlg4104 (talk) 04:47, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

Aunus Radio[edit]

Hi. You requested that the Aunus Radio page be translated from Finnish to English. I've finished the translation, and the article is in mainspace now. I realise it's been quite a while since you made the request, but I thought I'd let you know in any case. Thanks! — Twinzor Say hi! 17:33, 8 January 2009 (UTC)

Beautiful, thanks! It's been so long actually, that I had to use What links here to figure out why I wanted it translated :D If you've got time, there's a whole bunch of articles at the Finnish to English translation page that are waiting for someone to get around to translating them :) -Yupik (talk) 21:03, 8 January 2009 (UTC)
I noticed. I'll try to tackle some of the less technical articles when I have the time! I thought I'd start with the ones that have been on the queue the longest and haven't even been started yet. I hope I can make a dent on the somewhat large list. :P — Twinzor Say hi! 00:53, 9 January 2009 (UTC)
Same here. I got kinda pooped out of doing them in addition to translating at work and school all day long, so they've been just sitting there for some time. Good that you've jumped on board :) -Yupik (talk) 09:28, 9 January 2009 (UTC)

Request for proofreading[edit]

Hi! As you identify yourself a linguist and polyglot, I imagine you get many such requests, but could I persuade you to check a translation for me? It's a short excerpt from Lope de Vega's Isidoro de Madrid, in Homo unius libri#Interpretations. My translation is in the footnote. The Spanish seems a little archaic, and it's in verse, so this was a challenge for me and I could use your input (especially for the line «como van dejando atrás», which I translated to maintain the meter rather than literally). Thanks, if you're willing to help! --Unconventional (talk) 21:57, 1 February 2009 (UTC)

Oh, by the way, do you know you still have wikibreak banners up? I point it out because your contribs indicate you're pretty active here. --Unconventional (talk) 22:00, 1 February 2009 (UTC)

Unreferenced BLPs[edit]

Information.svg Hello Yupik! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 4 of the articles that you created are tagged as Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring these articles up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 2,077 article backlog. Once the articles are adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the list:

You are now a Reviewer[edit]

Redaktor Wikipedia 600px.png

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 18:37, 17 June 2010 (UTC)

You are also now a rollbacker—it's a useful tool to revert vandalism with just one click instead of having to go through the Undo headaches. Incidentally, if you don't want that tool, just let me know, I'll switch it off for you. Otherwise you should find it somewhat helpful. Cheers,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); June 17, 2010; 19:02 (UTC)

SuggestBot picks articles in a number of ways based on other articles you've edited, including straight text similarity, following wikilinks, and matching your editing patterns against those of other Wikipedians. It tries to recommend only articles that other Wikipedians have marked as needing work. Your contributions make Wikipedia better -- thanks for helping.

If you have feedback on how to make SuggestBot better, please tell me on SuggestBot's talk page. Thanks from Nettrom (talk), SuggestBot's caretaker.

Added template for SuggestBot[edit]

Hi,

Thanks for being one of SuggestBot's users! I hope you have found the bot's suggestions useful.

We are in the process of switching from our previous list-based signup process to using templates and userboxes, and I have therefore added the appropriate template to your user talk page. You should receive the first set of suggestions within a day, and since we'll be automating SuggestBot you will from then on continue to receive them regularly at the desired frequency.

We now also have a userbox that you can use to let others know you're using SuggestBot, and if you don't want to clutter your user talk page the bot can post to a sub-page in your userspace. More information about the userbox and usage of the template is available on User:SuggestBot/Getting Recommendations Regularly.

If there are any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch with me on my user talk page. Thanks again, Nettrom (talk) 17:30, 6 February 2011 (UTC)

SuggestBot currently skipping large pages[edit]

Hi,

Due to issues with saving large pages, we have currently set SuggestBot to skip such pages. This means it's currently not posting suggestions here, as you might have noticed. We recommend (re)moving some of the content (either manually or through automatic means), or moving SuggestBot's configuration template to a sub-page in your userspace, which will make it post the suggestions there instead (see the sign-up instructions for more info).

Feel free to let us know if you have any questions, either here or on SuggestBot's talk page. Regards, Nettrom (talk) 18:34, 13 November 2012 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for February 20[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Mike Westhues, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Rock (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, DPL bot (talk) 11:12, 20 February 2013 (UTC)
