The problem with Joan[edit]

Your bot made a link between Joan of England, Queen consort of Sicily and ca:Joan sense Terra. But Catalan Joan equals English John: Joan sense terra is John Lackland. Better watch out for this. Andrew Dalby http://perso.wanadoo.fr/dalby/ 12:35, 14 April 2006 (UTC)

Null interwiki links[edit]

Your bot just added null links [1] to ja: and on Lactic acid after I deleted them [2] yesterday. Looking at the history, it was your bot that originally [3] changed them 7 months ago. I've noticed some null links elsewhere. You should look into adding a zero-length check into your bot. Cburnett 23:33, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

Ok, I think it's broken: [4] [5] [6] Cburnett 23:38, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

Everything is fine. Your browser is not showing the japanese characters - that's why you don't see them. This question is answered in FAQ (the question marks are shown instead of the link). --Yurik 14:06, 4 April 2006 (UTC)
Nope. My browser isn't showing question marks but nothing. Literally, nothing. It shows up as an empty bullet on the page and the edit page shows [[ja:]] as empty. Cburnett 05:15, 6 April 2006 (UTC)
Your browser is still the problem. When I look at the links you're posting, I'm seeing Japanese and Chinese characters in the links that are being added and deleted. The problem has to be on your end.--Prosfilaes 05:20, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

Co-Freemasonry and Le Droit Humain[edit]

Your bot keeps adding interwiki links on the Co-Freemasonry article which I or other editors keep removing because they are clearly translating "Le Droit Humain". "Co-Freemasonry" and "Le Droit Humain" are not the same thing, just as "Freemasonry" and "The United Grand Lodge of England" are not the same thing. Please remove references to Co-Freemasonry from your bot's task list and in future, if you want to edit the Co-Freemasonry page, do it by hand, being sure to check for any discussion on the talk page if one of your edits is reverted. Thanks! :) Fuzzypeg 05:07, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

The bot only adds missing links, it does not guess. If some page in some site has a mistake, that mistake will be eventually copied to all pages. Please see FAQ above on how to deal with this kinds of problems. --Yurik 14:38, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

Pavia[edit]

Your bot added in it.wiki a wrong interwiki from the italian article it:Pavia to the spanish es:Manuel Pavía; what I find really disturbing is that it removed the CORRECT link to es:Pavia. --Ggonnell 11:47, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

Thanks, very very strange - bot log showed that NOTE: es:Pavía is redirect to es:Manuel Pavía - i looked, but the page was never a redirect. I re-ran the bot, and all pages are now properly updated. Thanks for reporting! --Yurik 14:50, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

Thanks - your bot made some good language cross-links today on pages that I have been watching. GRuban 13:50, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

Yurikbot is doing a tremendous job, but...[edit]

... can you stop it from adding iw links to Viceroy of Norway? See history for rationale. Thanks. Punkmorten 14:48, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

Nevermind, I worked it out. Sorry. Punkmorten 14:51, 4 April 2006 (UTC)
No problem :) --Yurik 15:02, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

fr:Accueil[edit]

Hello, your bot must NOT update this page. We have a policy on :fr about the interwikis that are shown there (only Wikis with more than 10'000 articles). Thanks Dake 15:21, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

Thanks, the main page ignore on various sites is still a work in progress - such updates shouldn't happen at all. --Yurik 15:44, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

Bots changing Torre del Greco page on EN wiki[edit]

Hi, your bot keeps breaking the link to the NAP page, it needs to be Torre d''o Grieco not Torre do Grieco. Can anything be done about this? Thanks.--E. abu Filumena 20:07, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

Thanks much for your report -- apparently it's a bug in the mediawiki parsing engine. I have told the developers on IRC about it, and we might have to handle the two single quotes in the name by hand in the mean time. --Yurik 20:44, 4 April 2006 (UTC)
Update: bug 5454 has been filed. --Yurik 21:41, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

Bot adding Spanish link to "Shango"[edit]

Hi,

Yurikbot has been adding a link to es:Chango, but that article is about the Chango people, not the Shango god.

Best,

Primetime 01:23, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

Please see FAQ above. That link to es: will be restored the moment ANY bot (including mine) will analyze Shango page, unless you take steps described above. --Yurik 02:11, 6 April 2006 (UTC)
Your bot thinks Shango is Chango. But in Spanish America, Shango is Changó. So, it's absolutely a problem with the robot. There's nothing I can do because both of the articles in question are correctly named and there are no redirects from Changó to "Shango" in either Wiki.--Primetime 02:27, 6 April 2006 (UTC)
It's not about the spelling. Bot simply follows all the links from english to other languages (see explanation above), and from those languages to yet more languages. If some language somewhere refers to the incorrect article in Spanish, it will be linked to from english. You need to find all the improper links from all languages, not just english, and delete or redirect them. --Yurik 03:53, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

Bot detecting/hiding vandalism[edit]

Hi Yurik, I have found that many almost every time an interwiki bot (normally yours as it is the most active) adds many interlinks in one go, it is actually covering up old vandalism, e.g. here, this isnt very surprising as it is unlikely that there are ever any articles that can be interlinked to many other wikis in one go from the english wiki, as the english wiki is already linked pretty well.

If you look at your bot's contribs, you will see that this is the case for virtually every time it adds many interwiki links in one go. What I suggest is that rather than ever adding more than 5 interwiki links in one go, you just flag the article somehow, and then revert the vandalism properly. thanks Martin 13:55, 7 April 2006 (UTC)

p.s. This problem is fairly rare, but still significant. Otherwise good work. Martin 13:57, 7 April 2006 (UTC)
Thanks, its a good suggestion. I am just not sure how to mark such articles - we were thinking of implementing the detection of who/when last changed the page, and if it was a recent ip edit, postpone the editing until later. Your suggestion sounds good, i'm just not sure how to better do the notifications. --Yurik 16:15, 7 April 2006 (UTC)

Correct Update?[edit]

Just noticed that YurikBot (talk · contribs) has made an automated update at Asian Football Confederation, as seen here. It has changed the indonesian version from "Konfederasi Sepak bola Asia" to "Asian Football Confederation". I'm not sure how those language options work, mainly because I only need english, but would it not be correct to keep it how it was, in proper indonesian language? The former text was indeed proper indonesian in structure and everything. For now I've left it as it is, but should it not be reverted back to indonesian? Raider2044 BioTalkContribs 10:39, 9 April 2006 (UTC)

The update is correct - id: wiki article was moved from id:Konfederasi Sepak bola Asia to id:Asian Football Confederation, and bot reflected that in the english en:Asian Football Confederation. It is always up to the target site to decide how to name the articles - interwikies will always reflect that. --Yurik 15:15, 9 April 2006 (UTC)

Bangor (Wales)[edit]

Please can we have bots that check they are in the right place - inserting links into Bangor (Wales) that redirect to Bangor Brittany, isn't very helpful ...... and it keeps on happening ! Velela 07:27, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

Bots can only do simple rote tasks, not intelligent tasks like understand the content of a link. It's likely the problem is covered in the FAQ above; one of other sites that cover Bangor (Wales) has interwiki links to Bangor Brittany, that should be deleted to fix the problem.--Prosfilaes 08:47, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

Bot interwiki sorting[edit]

Hi, I've read your message at the top about the proposed interwiki sorting feature, but assuming one isn't made, is it possible to stop the bot from auto-ordering links? The reason I'm saying this is that the native language ordering (as YurikBot does it) does not have the support of all Wikipedians, and it's often disruptive for editors. I don't think that the language code ordering should be used by default either (as 53 vs. 49 isn't a clear concensus), but IMO you should let the editors of the articles decide how they want to order, considering there isn't a clear policy.

Thanks, Ynhockey (Talk) 14:42, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

I agree that the sort order we have now is not optimal. Furthemore, i think every site (and possibly every user) should decide for themselves what order the links should be in (see the at the top of the page). Nevertheless, we do need an order in which the bot will add links, otherwise it might be random. At this point, you can give us an order in which to have the links for he: (must be agreed on by the he: community), and the bot framework will be updated. --Yurik 22:55, 13 April 2006 (UTC)
Meanwhile how about having the bot update existing iw links without moving them, and append new ones to the end rather than trying to follow any specific order. Phr 19:34, 30 April 2006 (UTC)

Eigenvalue, eigenvector and eigenspace[edit]

Your bot just put a interwiki link ca:Template:Caixa desplegable in article pt:Valor próprio which is wrong. I guess this comes from the english article Eigenvalue, eigenvector and eigenspace. Can your bot delete this link from all languages?

Was left by 193.137.102.7.

Thanks for reporting, this is an issue i should make the bot solve differently. For now, i created a stub article ca:Valor propi, and pointed everything to it. The article is just a stub, and will probably be deleted, unless someone else writes about it. --Yurik 14:56, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

Bots and two-letter abbreviations[edit]

Hi! Some interwiki bots, including YurikBot, have been adding links from no:ER to en:erbium, nn:erbium etc, and subsequently links have been made from erbium back to ER. See for example the histories of no:ER and nn:erbium. So far I've only seen it for erbium/ER, but I don't have all the two-letter abbreviations on my watchlist, and I believe it's a more general problem. How can this be solved? Thank you for your assistance. --Eddi (Talk) 16:47, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

If i am not mistaken, this happened because no:template:tobokstavsforkortelse is actually a disambiguation template. I will add it to the list. --Yurik
In the mean time, could you please stop YurikBot's actions and clean up the links before the bot is activated again. Thanks. --Eddi (Talk) 18:17, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
ER looks better now. When I investigated further I found more errors, but I suppose they will be fixed, too. BTW, should the property of being a dab page influence a robot's actions? Must all interwiki links from a dab page go to explicit dab pages? --Eddi (Talk) 23:09, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
I am running the bot on all disabiguation pages from no:Kategori:Tobokstavsord category. Now that the bot knows its a disambig, it will try to match all of them with the other disambigs (see more info in FAQ above). Thanks for reporting! --Yurik 00:59, 12 April 2006 (UTC)

Three Kingdoms of Korea[edit]

Hello. I have had to change [[nap:Tre Regni d''a Corea]] to [[nap:Tre Regni d<nowiki >''</ nowiki>a Corea]] (spaces added, I could not nest the nowiki tags) so MediaWiki does not interpret the two apostrophes as the italics marker. However, your bot changes this back to the old version, which messes up the link because MediaWiki thinks the two apostrophes mean italics (they are just part of the word "d''a"). Can you fix this? Thanks. SCHZMO 20:46, 14 April 2006 (UTC)

Unfortunatelly this is a bug in the mediawiki engine. Please see my reply for #Bots changing Torre del Greco page on EN wiki above. Thanks! --Yurik 09:12, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

The Yu-Gi-Oh! issue[edit]

Doesn't look too serious, hu? Yurikbot made an interwiki between an en: and a fr: page. See the diff. I had reverted it the first time (yesterday), but apparently he decides to make it everyday. As you see he is linking the page of one character in en: to a page giving a summary of characters in fr:. Maybe someday in the future that character will have his page in fr:, it is hard to say, but in the meantime that interwiki is wrong. That being said, there is a link between the 2 pages, so if it is too much work to tweak it, don't bother. Just thought you would like to have the feedback. Alex lbh 10:24, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

Bot is doing everything correctly - if there is a link from en: to fr:, there should be corresponding link from fr: to en:. When its missing, the bot adds it. See the FAQ above. --Yurik 09:15, 16 April 2006 (UTC)
I see. The point is that in this case, the page the en: ->fr: interwiki is refering to was transformed into a redirect to another page. So I think the interwiki will have to be modified in en:, but don't you think the bot should detect he is redirected and avoid putting the link in that case? Alex lbh 12:26, 16 April 2006 (UTC)
The redirect is detected and is handled by changing the original link. This is done because most of the time the redirect is created when an article is moved to a new name. --Yurik 18:03, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

Beauharnais in Swedish[edit]

I had a purpose in omitting the link to the Swedish page in the Polish article, most articles in Swedish wiki are totally worthless stubs and do not merit any mention.--Alexvonf 20:22, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

Lets hope Swedish articles grow. Unless we establish by common vote an exact criteria for including/excluding articles, ALL languages will be included, among other things to help them grow. --Yurik 09:17, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

Penglai Mountain[edit]

Your bot kept adding de:Penglai to Penglai Mountain, which I removed twice because the German article is about the city, not the mountain. I didn't remove the interwikis in the corresponding Japanese and Chinese articles as they mention the mountain as well as the city. Please leash your bot :) deadkid_dk 23:18, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

Unfortunatelly there is not much I can do -- the bot follows the steps outlined in the FAQ above, and it tries to find ONE article in each language to interlink with all others. All interwiki bots do the same thing, as we firmly beleive that a single concept (like the mountain) can have a unique corresponding article in the other languages. If another, similar concept (like the city) with the same name is introduced, it should have a separate article. If the same page covers both, and another language has two pages for each concept individually, then the page should be linked to whichever concept it has more of (if its mostly about the city - link to the city, otherwise link to the mountain - don't link to both). --Yurik 09:24, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

Placebo effekt (Danish language)[edit]

Your bot has changed the Danish language link to a less used version of the term. A Google search of Danish use reveals a large difference, in spite of Dane's strong tendencies to turn phrases into single words (fortunately not to the degree as Inuits do it!):

Your bot needs to leave this one alone, or at least allow both possibilities. -- Fyslee 08:45, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

The bot is doing everything correctly -- Danish wiki does NOT have da:Placebo effekt article! But it does have da:Placeboeffekt. So please stop linking to non-existing article, and if you feel it is incorrect - rename the danish article (the bot will notice and update the links). --Yurik 09:28, 16 April 2006 (UTC)
You are absolutely correct! I wasn't aware that it was a link to the Danish article, and was just pointing out a usage issue. It turns out that many of the links with the words separated, had the words joined with a hyphen, which is common i Danish, making the conjoined form also very correct. Keep up the good work. -- Fyslee 19:49, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

A conflict at Al Jazirah (state)[edit]

Why did the bot erroneously change the link at Al Jazirah (state) from ar:ولاية الجزيرة (the correct one) to ar:الجزيرة (describing islands in general)? The FAQ says that whenever the bot finds a conflict, it requires the human operator to resolve it. --My another account 19:04, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for reporting! I just re-ran the bot, and it is correctly linking all the sites. Unfortunatelly i do not have the logs from January, so i cannot see why that descision was made. --Yurik 20:00, 16 April 2006 (UTC)
I mean, what could possibly cause the bot to modify the existing interwiki link, except for a redirect at the Arabic page? (As far as I can tell, it wasn't a redirect in January) --My another account 02:27, 17 April 2006 (UTC)
The bot may modify a link because of one of the following: the page was a redirect to another page (true, it doesn't seem that way from the history); one of the pages was reported as deleted (it happens on ocasion, and we still don't know why); one of the pages was a disambig, while the other was "normal" - so the bot automatically picks the one that matches with the original. That's the only three cases i can think of. --Yurik 02:40, 17 April 2006 (UTC)

Alice[edit]

English interwiki for sv:Alice ought to be en:Alice, not en:Alice, South Africa, right? Both this bot and another bot has made this weird edit. (Entheta 22:17, 19 April 2006 (UTC))

The edit is unfortunatelly not weird but kinda makes sense :) sv:Alice is a regular article, whereas en:Alice is a disambiguation. Somewhere on one of the linked pages there is a link to en:Alice, South Africa, and because that page is not a disambig, it gets picked as matching to the original non-disambig sv:Alice. The solution would be to make the sv: article a disambiguation, or the english a non-disambiguation -- and split it up into several pages: about the name, about other things called Alice, etc. --Yurik 09:05, 20 April 2006 (UTC)
No, your explanation doesn't make any sense. It's the duty of the bot creator, not the article creator, to think twice while programming if it is going to mess up CORRECTLY written articles. Some articles don't have the disambigs as there is nothing to disambig yet (no further articles). Still your bot makes nonsensical interwiki links (see the "interwiki" message below)

query.php[edit]

I'm drooling over the possibilities here - this is very nice. Is the interface reasonably stable? History previews are the first obvious application for me, so I'll try to work that into the popups when I find the time. If I do think of enhancements to the query page, it'd be useful to have the source to play with. Where is it? Lupin|talk|popups 17:12, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

Thanks :). The code is at http://svn.wikimedia.org/viewvc/mediawiki/trunk/extensions/BotQuery/ (you can use TortoiseSVN to subscribe anonymously). Any suggestions and/or help is always welcome :) --Yurik 03:00, 27 April 2006 (UTC)
A couple of random ideas
  • to generate useful previews for categories, could your tool spit out the members of a category? Also it'd be cool if it could compute unions and intersections of categories.
  • is there a way to see which pages link to a given image? If not, this'd be useful. Lupin|talk|popups 02:51, 28 April 2006 (UTC)
  • What about specian pages?

Hi! Just thought I would praise you here, too, Yurik, for providing a tool that makes popups even better. (In case you didn't follow User talk:Lupin#Feature request for popups: history preview.) Keep up the good work! --Eddi (Talk) 08:29, 30 April 2006 (UTC)

Another thought: I'd like to be able to query user contribs in a similar way to querying page histories. Lupin|talk|popups 03:53, 4 May 2006 (UTC)

Good idea... If only i grew a spare head to help me with all the work... :) --Yurik 20:35, 6 May 2006 (UTC)

Just one link[edit]

Hi, please can you explain what happens, when someone creates a new page in the Latin wikipedia and let an interwiki link point to the correspondig English page, which keeps - let's say - 20 interwiki links to other pages. The author does not link back from the English page to the Latin page: Will your bot add the Latin page to the English page and those 20 other pages and will it add the 20 other pages to the Latin page? Or does the bot need at least one pair of interwiki links to make its work? Thanks. --Roland2 22:55, 28 April 2006 (UTC)

One link is generaly enough - whenever i run the bot on la:, that page will be updated, as well as english and all other pages. On the other hand, if you want the page to be updated faster, place a link on en:, because then you don't have to wait for me to run it on la: - any other related page in any linked language will triger the update through english. --Yurik 23:59, 29 April 2006 (UTC)
These are good news. Thanks. :-) --Roland2 14:51, 30 April 2006 (UTC)

Bot on Portuguese Wikipedia[edit]

Hi, i'm having problem with your bot YurikBot on this article in the portuguese wikipedia. The bot keeps changing the link of the english version in the 'other languages section' (it should point to Patch, here in english wikip) to the especific computer related article with the same name (Patch (computing)). Then it adds all other languages of this wrong link! Hope you fix it soon. Thank you very much. ——Waldo Jeffers 21:35, 29 April 2006 (UTC)

The article pt:Patch (emblema) is not a disambiguation, so it should be linked to a specific article in en:, not a disambiguation Patch. --Yurik 00:01, 30 April 2006 (UTC)
It might help if the bot inserted html comments with every iw link it creates, describing how the link was deduced. Phr 19:36, 30 April 2006 (UTC)

query.php wikitext[edit]

Is there a way to get the wiki markup for a given article/oldid with query.php, as opposed to retrieving the whole page in html and trying to extract the wiki text? It would be great if that can be added if there's no existing way. Getting the html isn't so nice, because it gives a whole lot of expanded templates and so forth that's not needed. Thanks. Phr 05:24, 30 April 2006 (UTC)

There is presently no way to export wiki markup through the query.php interface, but you can get it from the Special:Export page. I plan to add it to the query.php later. --Yurik 05:31, 30 April 2006 (UTC)
Thanks, unfortunately Special:Export gives no way to get old revisions, which my application needs. There's an open mediawiki bug [7] with a bunch of rejected patches, so it may make the most sense to just handle it in the query interface. Phr 19:21, 30 April 2006 (UTC)
Please see /Query Interface Suggestions for the query suggestions. --Yurik 19:14, 8 May 2006 (UTC)

Bug(?) in YurkiBot.[edit]

Hi.

Could you explain this edit of your bot... It was marked as adding interwiki while it only edited the content.

Nux talk | faster(pl) talk 10:32, 1 May 2006 (UTC)

Definitely a bug! The question is in what? This might related to the "two changes from the same user override other contributions", but the thing is spread over several days, so it is very very strange. Thank you soo much for reporting, and if you can revert it I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks! --Yurik 03:54, 2 May 2006 (UTC)

Saint-Barthélemy (Guadeloupe)[edit]

Hi,

Just to tell you that your bot made a mistake. It made a interwiki link between fr:Saint-Barthélemy (Guadeloupe) and pl:Saint-Barthélemy (Manche). I think the good link will be pl:Saint-Barthélemy (Manche) to fr:Saint-Barthélemy (Manche). I made the modify in french but not in polish. I hope this will help your bot. Regards.

Interwiki[edit]

It's the third time I had to revert after your bot some nonsensical interwiki links it makes to the name "Justyna". Is it possible to switch off its activity for this very page?: http://pl.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Justyna&action=history

Bot is just following existing links. All articles in the wikipedia are interconnected, so when someone modifies a French version of a Polish aricle (for example), that change will be reflected in Polish, as well as all other related articles. Please read the FAQ above. Also, please sign your posts. --Yurik 17:41, 6 May 2006 (UTC)

YurikBot Modifying ...[edit]

Hi Yurik, whenever I see "robot Modifying: xx" in the watchlist I have to doublecheck the changes. Yes, I agree interwikies are a mess but rather often your bot is just messing it up more. Could you restrict it only to addition of non-existing links and walk more carefully through modifying part. -- Goldie (tell me) 19:45, 6 May 2006 (UTC)

Modifications are usually caused by page renaming. It would make no sense to point to a redirect, as that would cause problems in the future - someone might decide to make a disambig page instead of the redirect, and all of a sudden you have a conflict (some pages point to a specific topic, and some - to disambigs, all in the same language). That is actually the reason for the second type of modifications - if bot determines while following an english topic A, that there are two pages in Italian, one a disambig and another is OK, it will modify all references to disambig to point to the regular page instead (unless the original english page A was also a disambig). This may cause some confusion, but should be cleaned up, otherwise we will end up with even a bigger mess. :) You are right that we need to look at any modifications by the bot. Besides, it is still on my todo list to introduce a better conflict resolution wizard on the tool server... --Yurik 20:34, 6 May 2006 (UTC)

It ought to be quite easy to verify page moves as they leave #REDIRECT [[<new name>]] behind (although it is little bit more complicated with local language redirect words). The problems come from vandalism and dead wrong links being propagated by the bot. Sometimes it comes from article split. -- Goldie (tell me) 16:11, 7 May 2006 (UTC)

Hebrew Wikipedia interwiki[edit]

  1. At Hebrew Wikipedia, there is a lot of interwiki going on. Since I'm involved in it, and my IP address keeps getting blocked at English Wikipedia, several pages need to be interwikied here. Can you keep going to Hebrew Wikipedia for this?
  2. Does your bot do Category pages? Several of those could use updating.

Hebrew Wikipedia interwiki 2[edit]

Hi, I noticed that the interwiki of en:String theory have not been added to the Hebrew article, He:תורת המיתרים, even though the links En->He and He->En have been in place for two years. Any idea what went wrong? tnx, Odedee 08:17, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

Just guessing, but i think it has to do with a interwiki conflict (see faq above). When there is a conflict, nothing will be changed until its resolved. --Yurik 03:27, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
You were right - the German wiki had a bunch of links to articles on superstring theory in the other wikis. I removed them. Any estimate how long before the interwikis will be updated? Also, is there any way for us in the He Wiki to get a list of articles which the interwiki bot will not update due to a conflict? I think most Wiki sysadmins would like to know of such articles. Robot[edit]

Hi, I am working on translating Hungarian pages to English. Could you please help and make your robot add English links to Hungarian town's pages. Thanks,
Eddie

Eddie, the bot only fills-in the missing links, but it does not "guess". Which means that there has to be at least one link, for example from English to Hungarian page, before the bot helps and adds a link from Hungarian back to English. See the faq above. --Yurik 01:46, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

InterWiki-ing "Bestseller"[edit]

Hi

I recently removed the IW on da:Bestseller, since the danish article is about the clothing company Bestseller, while the other languages seem to be about best selling books. I assume the YurikBot didn't catch that twist, since IW was put back. I removed it again a moment ago, but maybe You could remove da: from the other languages? User:G®iffen 22:19, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

All interwiki bots fill the missing links. You can create an english article about the company, and point the danish link there. --Yurik 01:52, 14 May 2006 (UTC)
I moved the danish artc to bestseller (firma) and created a 3-line stub explaining the book-bestseller instead G®iffen 14:47, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

WDDX[edit]

Hi - I just stumbeled across WDDX - on a first glance, it looks like a nice format to have for query.php - what do you think? -- G. Gearloose (?!) 21:11, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up. I am not yet sure when i will get around to it, but sounds like it might be a good standard to follow. --Yurik 13:34, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

query.php bug: rvcomments doesn't work any more[edit]

The example on the query.php help page, http://en.wikipedia.org/w/query.php?format=xml&what=revisions&titles=Main_Page&rvlimit=100&rvstart=20060401000000&rvcomments no longer gives the revision comments. If you use rvcomments=true it does, though. I prefer the more concise syntax - please could you reenable it? Thanks, Lupin|talk|popups 02:51, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for reporting! Will fix soon. --Yurik 13:33, 15 May 2006 (UTC)
Done - should be available shortly. --Yurik 03:53, 20 May 2006 (UTC)
Excellent, thank you. Lupin|talk|popups 02:10, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

Looking for bots[edit]

Hello Yurik, you might be answer my question. (1) I'm looking for a bot that make a list of pages without interwiki links. I've created a project page in Thai Wikipedia (th:วิกิพีเดีย:จับคู่บทความ) by using interwiki.py scan the XML dump file and then used the Microsoft Excel open the interwiki.log searching for the page without the links. After I updated twice I think it is kind of cumbersome method, so I think it might be another easier way to do. (2) My second question is that I'm looking for a bot that can find only the red links in a set of articles and create a list. This is similar to Special:Wantedpages but just for specific portals. I created one manualy in Thai Wikipedia at th:วิกิพีเดีย:บทความการ์ตูนที่ต้องการ. I used to ask these questions in Wikipedia:Bot requests before but did not really get the answer I want. Thank you for any answer --Manop - TH 20:36, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

Just for you :) Added a new query in query.php: see http://en.wikipedia.org/w/query.php (should be available shortly) --Yurik 02:15, 20 May 2006 (UTC)
Thank you soooooo much. That's awesome. I'm learning how to use this command. --Manop - TH 16:48, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

query.php: imagelinks doesn't work for commons images[edit]

I've just added the output from imagelinks queries to popups for images, which seems like it'll be pretty useful. Unfortunately it doesn't work for commons images like this one: [8]. I'd like the information under the File links section of Image:California_43.svg and similar images to be returned if possible. Lupin|talk|popups 02:23, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

I will have to solve this in a 1 1/2 weeks - vacation time :) --Yurik 05:16, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
Not a problem - hope you enjoy your break :) Lupin|talk|popups 02:43, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
Not a bug, but a feature! :) The filtering parameter, ilfilter, specifies for which pages to generate results. By default, it is set to existing, but the image page does not exist (for en) - thus it is not shown. To see the results, use this: [9]. --Yurik 17:53, 1 June 2006 (UTC)

... or deleted images[edit]

Another thing that doesn't work as I'd expect is that deleted images don't seem to give any imagelinks. For example, Image:Somerights.png has backlinks listed on the image page, but [10] has none. This would be useful for people wishing to mop up after an image has been deleted. Lupin|talk|popups 21:09, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

Yurikbot on Chinese wiki[edit]

I'm wondering if you are running YurikBot on all articles of Chinese wiki? Your bot is doing about 6 edits per minute, so it looks like you are running through the articles rather than doing edits because of multi-lang logins. If you aren't running through them all, could you tell me which subset you are running on so I don't run my bot zh:Vina-iwbot on the same ones? If you run it on certain schedule, please let me know also so we don't conflict. Thanks. Please reply zh:User talk:Vinama3171 here. --Vina 07:36, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

Hmm, the bot is running faster than i wanted :(. I run it without any schedule - just when i have time. The bot is running from ! to the last-most symbol, and it should update any related articles in all the wikies i have a login for. --Yurik 14:40, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

Query.php[edit]

Have you thought using query.php=content in pywikibots? Wouldn't it be better than exporting pages? I compared these two methods with 60 pages: getting and reading query.php=content=xml took 1-2 seconds while basic exporting took 7-8 seconds. Good job! --HartzR 08:37, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

Whoa, I was a bit lazy and used 10 different items and copied them six times to get a list 60 items long. Query.php removes duplicates? Now getting and reading 50 pages took 4-5 seconds. It's still faster than exporting; at least because getting the pages with query.php using Python requires much less code. The maximum of 50 pages should be mentioned on the main page. :) --HartzR 09:11, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
I'm a bit surprised :) -- Not sure why it would run faster really, same type of calls. All the performance metrics are logged, so later i will have a chance to analyze them. The pywikipediabot should use all the new query features, but i just didn't have enough bandwidth to work on that - the framework is fairly complex and has lots of code that will have to be reexamined. I am contemplating creating an alternative .Net or python framework, with some code reuse - might be easier. --Yurik 14:45, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

Yurik on sr: wiki[edit]

Hi, your bot is adding interwiki links to redirect pages, can you fix that somehow. See here. --SasaStefanovic 00:23, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

Very sorry - the bot has not been updated with the localized redirect name, and thought the page is a regular page. I am trying to persuade the core framework writers to switch to the query.php (see above) method of parsing pages - it will totally remove any such issues. Thanks for reporting! --Yurik 20:19, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

your interwiki bot is buggy[edit]

Tobias Conradi (Talk) 12:13, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

Tobias Conradi (Talk) 16:31, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

Tobias Conradi (Talk) 00:48, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

Hi. The last one seems fine - the link is to removal by someone else (unless the topic is incorrect). The bot is not buggy though - it simply follows the links given by people in many different sites, and fills out the missing ones. Please take a look at the FAQ above for the details. Thank you very much for giving links though - i will further look into them when i am back home. --Yurik 11:22, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

Namespace exclude[edit]

Hi Yurik, one more request for bot improvement: could you limit it (or work with development) to exclude Wikipedia namespaces ("Уикипедия:<something>" in Bulgarian Wiki). You can see some "fixes" ([11], [12]) to our Sandbox page. -- Goldie (tell me) 14:09, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

Hi. I will have to double check why that namespace was included - it shouldn't be, but the namespace might have been recently renamed (localized), and the bot might have to be updated. Thanks for reporting! --Yurik 11:04, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

Please STOP adding commercial links (Inamed) to the Breast Implant Article[edit]

I have deleted these links twice. This is not an article about Inamed implants and how 'bouncy' they are. PLEASE STOP.MollyBloom 14:56, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

WHAT??? Please provide a diff link next time you post something like this! I have looked at the article, but haven't seen anything as you describe! The bot has added interwiki links just like it was suppose to. If the links are incorrect, see the FAQ above. --Yurik 10:46, 28 May 2006 (UTC)
What was added was the info in other languages (which is fine) but there was also a commercial link. I am not sure how that happened as I am not familiar with BOTs. IT hasn't come back so it is not a problem.MollyBloom 17:58, 1 June 2006 (UTC)

Interwiki Bot[edit]

Can you please exclude the page Minor characters in The Adventures of Tintin from the list your bot visit when it adds interwiki links? This is a page that is dedicated to minor characters in general, and the bot always adds the interwikilink for a specific charater. Glaurung 15:03, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

The bot operates on all the pages - if there is a mistake of the made links, please see the FAQ above on how to fix them. --Yurik 11:02, 28 May 2006 (UTC)
Because on en: we have a single page for all the minor characters and on some other sites they have separate pages for each of them, this is a case where interwikilinks should not be bidirectional. Unfortunately, the bot always wants to make bi-directional linking, which is not appropriate in that case. Of course, I could solve the problem by removing the interwikilink to Minor characters in The Adventures of Tintin on all the minor characters in every language. Not only would this be a huge job, but it would also remove useful interwikilinks to en:. I think that the bot's code must be a improved to take into account the cases where bedirectional linking is not desirable. I am sure that this situation is not the only one. -Glaurung 06:26, 30 May 2006 (UTC)

pleas make YurikBot stop[edit]

Please see the FAQ above on how to fix incorrect links. --Yurik 11:03, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

Breton Wikipedia links[edit]

With Wikipedia syntax, normally, if a part of a word is beetween [[ and ]], all the word is underlined. However, on Breton Wikipedia, diacritics go wrong. For example on Brezhoneg page, only « gwerzio », and not « gwerzioù », is underlined with the syntax [[gwerz]]ioù. We tried to change the br:mediawiki:linktrail page by adding « ñ » and « ù » letters, in the French way (fr:mediawiki:linktrail), and then by adding also the « c'h » letter (« c'h » is a letter in Breton language, uppercase « C'h », so when this signs are used, apostrophe doesn't mean a new word) in the Spanish way (es:mediawiki:linktrail), but there was no change, neither with the French way, neither with the Spanish way. Is this a developement problem on Breton Wikipedia ? Baleer 19:42, 26 May 2006 (CEST)

Hi. I think this might be an issue with the wiki engine - please file the bug in bugzilla. --Yurik 11:23, 28 May 2006 (UTC)
Done. Thank you for your help. Baleer 16:16, 28 May 2006 (CEST)

Replacing redirects ... is this possible?[edit]

Hi, is it possible to make a bot, which substitutes a link to a redirection page with the link to the target page? Example:

* Page A: "... [[Page B|bla bla]] ..."
* Page B: "#REDIRECT [[Page C]]"

The bot should edit "Page A" to

* Page A: "... [[Page C|bla bla]] ..."

Or ... does such a bot already exist?

--Roland2 14:52, 27 May 2006 (UTC) la:Usor:Roland2

Already exists as part of pywikipediabot framework. Not many people run it though :( --Yurik 10:34, 28 May 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for your answer, you mean the m:Solve_disambiguation.py? I've looked and asked around ... We have an ongoing discussion about redirects at la:Disputatio Vicipaediae:Redirectio --Roland2 12:58, 28 May 2006 (UTC) la:Usor:Roland2

Hey...[edit]

Hey, I noticed that you have the Yurikbot on the Bosnian Wikipedia (Bosanski Wikipedija). You left your message ("to not leave any messages") in English. I was wondering if you would want it translated into Bosnian.

Thanks, Kseferovic 22:53, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

Of course! :) Thanks much! --Yurik 21:51, 30 May 2006 (UTC)

Hi![edit]

I hope you could help me... I contribuate on oc project. I would like to create a Bot! I uploaded Python & Pywikipediabot! What have I to do now? Cedric31

Interwikis on it.wiki[edit]

Please notice that interwikis for it:Contrada della Lupa are useless as they point to different articles :-) Thank you, it:Utente:Elitre - --80.104.162.224 01:37, 31 May 2006 (UTC)

Melilla[edit]

Hi, today your bot changed interwiki of serbian Melilla to sr:Корисник:Славен Косановић/, and that is a nonsence, it is obviously a user page with spain text which should be translated later; under the right name Мелиља there is a redirect (nonsence!) to the user page. I noticed your change in cs.wiki, but you probably did it in more ones. Cheers, -jkb- 08:09, 31 May 2006 (UTC)

See here, the redirects are corrected now i hope. Good day, -jkb- 16:55, 31 May 2006 (UTC)

Saint-Barthélemy[edit]

I write you again 'cause your bot has made a link between ca:Saint-Barthélemy, concerning the island in America, and pl:Saint-Barthélemy (Manche), concerning the village in Normandie. This is the fourth time your bot does it, I hope you can fix it. Best wishes, ca:Usuari:Manu bcn

Hi, I am very sorry that you keep running into this: the problem is that some page somewhere has an incorrect link, and that link gets copied everywhere else. Please look at EVERY language page linked, and see which one has an incorrect link. I am currently investigating how to make a tool that would help cases like this - so that users can visualize all links and remove incorrect ones, instead of doing it by hand. Also, see the FAQ above for additional information on this (unfortunatelly common) problem. Thanks! --Yurik 16:23, 31 May 2006 (UTC)
