On2 TrueMotion VP5 is a proprietary lossy video compression format and video codec. It is an incarnation of the TrueMotion video codec, a series of video codecs developed by On2 Technologies.

It was announced by On2 Technologies in February 2002.[1][2][3] The production version of VP5 codec was released in May 2002.[4]

When the codec was in beta, to preview its quality, On2 created a plug-in for RealPlayer.[4] Lately the final version of the codec was ready. The VP5 codec was limited, when the VP6 came out. The VP5 RealPlayer plug-in is still available at Softpedia.

Later incarations of this codec are VP6 through VP8.
