[edit] Geography

The village is a small settlement near the border with the Koryak Okrug, part of Kamchatka Krai, on the banks of the Vayegi River. As with all Chukotka rural localities, the vast majority (around 85%[5]) of the population is made up of indgenous people, mainly Chukchi, meaning that the economy is centred around traditional hunting and fishing.

[edit] History

The village was originally founded in 1951 as part of the Soviet Union's ongoing policy of the collectivisation of farms. The collective farm (Kolkhoz) that was founded around this village brought together several groups of previously nomadic herders[5].

[edit] Culture

The village is known throughout the area for being a centre for indigenous festivals, and they are the hosts each year of a number of events including: the native festival of Kilvei, the Thanksgiving Ceremony, the Young Reindeer festival and an annual dog sled race, where competitors race for the Governor's Cup[5].

Indigenous traditions are perpetuated through the presence of societies for the promotion of reindeer herding as well as a folklore ensmeble in the cultural centre and a labour veterans club promoting traditional artistry and handicrafts[5]. As well as these indigenous services, the village also boasts a High School and daycare centre.

Local indigenous inhabitants call the village Varen (lit. Tripod), from the Chukchi word for the horizontal supports of a Yaranga[9].

Local legend tell how a hill near the village was the scene of a battle between the Chukchi and the Koryak. The Chukchi took up position on a hill which they had soaked with water to prevent the Koryak from being able to climb it. The Koryak persisted and so the Chukchi loaded their sleds with stones lay the horizontal supports from their Yarangas across them and sent them down the hill scattering the Koryak and winning the battle[9].
