Vavakkad(വാവക്കാട്) is a village situated along the northern border of Ernakulam District, Kerala, South India.

One could reach here by traveling 27 KM from Ernakulam City or 23 KM from Cochin International airport, Nedumbassery. National Highway No 17 is just 1.5 KM away from the village. Famous Cherai Beach is just 4 km away from here.

Once very famous for its coir business now the business is fighting for its existence. Cultural activities and festivals are an important part of village life.People meet regularly at the Gurudeva Memorial Library for participating in debates about public issues.
Vavakkad can surely be proud about the fact that it was the first village in Kerala which started giving a monthly pension to senior citizens above 70 Years.
Gurudeva Memorial library (ഗുരുദേവ മെമ്മോറിയല് വായനശാല) and its surrounding ground is the center of cultural activities in Vavakkad. This Library was founded in 1954 and celebrated the golden jubilee in the year 2004.It has got the name after Sree Narayana Guru, who is considered as the father of cultural revolution in Kerala.

The place was filled with the bats ("Vaval" in Colloquel). After that it was named as "Vaval Kadu" (Forest of bats :-) വാവല് കാട് --> വാവല്ക്കാട് --> വാവക്കാട് ). It became Vavakkad.[1]

Vavakkad has been in many historical events for last 300 years.
Vavakkad was once part of Thiruvithamkoor(Travancore)province before the reunion of states.

Three major social institutions which is helping the growth of vavakkad as the cultural capital of Paravoor Taluk are the following,

The S.N.D.P. Branch founted in 1942. As this branch of SNDP is open for all, it retained its significance after Sree Narayana Guru had established this movement.

Grama Seva Sangham is providing pension for olde aged people. It was established in 1966.

It is another Social institution, which helps Vavakkad in its cultural activities.

One of the best comedians of Malayalam film industry,Paravoor Bharathan is from here. There are more than 300 films to his credit.
