Vázquez (or Vásquez, Vásques, Vasquez) is an original Galician surname, in use not only in Galicia but all over Spanish-speaking (and, at a lesser extent, Portuguese-speaking, where Vasco as surname predominates) countries. Vasquez means "[son] of Vasco" and Vasco comes from the pre-Roman latinized name "Velascus" (of uncertain origin and meaning, probably Basque or Iberian), which evolves in Galician-Portuguese Velascu > Veascu > Vaasco > Vasco (Sp.cognate Velasco, surname Velázquez).[1]
