Vectorworks is a computer-aided design (CAD) and Building Information Modeling (BIM) software program developed by Nemetschek Vectorworks that is used for drafting, technical drawing and 3D modeling.[1] Vectorworks offers 2D, 3D, production management, and presentation capabilities for all phases of the design process. Vectorworks products are currently available in English, Chinese, Japanese, German, French, Dutch, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and Norwegian.

History[edit]

Vectorworks was known as MiniCAD when it first launched in 1985. It was originally developed on Mac OS and became available to Windows computers from MiniCAD 6. With version 8, it became MiniCAD Vectorworks, and with version 8.5 in 1999 it lost its MiniCAD name.

It was developed by Diehl Graphsoft, now Nemetschek Vectorworks, Inc. Alongside MiniCAD, Diehl Graphsoft also released a 2D CAD program for the Mac targeted toward architects called Blueprint. The last version of Blueprint was version 5. The version numbers for MiniCAD and then MiniCAD Vectorworks went up to version 12. In September 2007, the numbering scheme changed. Vectorworks versions after version 12 have been numbered by the year (i.e. currently 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014). The data files used the MCD extension (from MiniCAD) until version 12. Vectorworks 2008 and onwards use the VWX extension.

Vectorworks 2011 was launched in September 2010.

Vectorworks 2012 was launched in September 2011.[2]

Vectorworks 2013 was launched in September 2012.[3]

Vectorworks 2014 was launched in September 2013

File exchange[edit]

Vectorworks has interfaces to DXF/DWG as well as IFC (an open standard for sharing BIM data), and imports and exports to a number of file formats, among those SketchUp, 3DS, c4d, EPix, Shapefile/SHP, SAT, Parasolid X_T, PDF, EPS, JPG, TIF, and BMP. Vectorworks also supports IGES, SAT, STL, Rhinoceros 3D, COLLADA, and FBX, and connects through ODBC to external databases like FileMaker, Access, MySQL, or Excel.
