Velur is located at 10°06′N 76°15′E / 10.1°N 76.25°E.[1] It has an average elevation of 170 metres (794 feet).

As of 2001[update] India census,[2] Velur had a population of 18,393. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Velur has an average literacy rate of 67%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 75%, and female literacy is 59%. In Velur, 9% of the population is under 6 years of age.
