History[edit]

The company was founded as Videsh Sanchaar Nigam Limited (VSNL) in 1986.[9] VSNL was the first Indian PSU to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 2000. In 2002 Tata Communications acquired a 45% stake in VSNL. The international arm of VSNL, VSNL International, was launched in 2004. VSNL, formerly owned by the Indian government, was acquired by the Tata Group and renamed Tata Communications Limited on February 13, 2008.[10][11]

In 2009, Tata Communications and Tyco Telecommunications completed the TGN-Intra Asia cable system. The company went on to acquire a number of cable systems from Tyco Communications, including VSNL Northern Europe, VSNL Western Europe, VSNL Transatlantic, and VSNL Transpacific.
