Vishwamitra Gokel (1940–2009) was a Bollywood film producer and director. The first person in film industry who had given remaining amount to Mere Baad’s cast & crew after 8 years of critically acclaimed but commercially unsuccessful film Mere Baad’s release. He has produced and directed two films like Bhala Manus and Mere Baad. He has directed serial Rishtey for Zee TV.

Born in Sialkot, Punjab (Presently in Pakistan), Viswamitra started in the late 1963s as an assistant director. He has started his career with famous Director and Producer Amarjeet in 1963. He assisted Director Amarjeet in known films like TEEN DEVIYAN and GAMBLER. In 1965, he shifted himself under banner of Navketan in guidance of evergreen famous actor, director and producer Dev Anand. He assisted Deva Anand in many prestigious projects like PREM PUJARI, HARE RAMA HARE KRISHNA, HEERA PANNA and ISHQ ISHQ ISHQ.

He has also assisted T. Prakash Rao in Film DUNIYA (Dev Anand, Vijyantimala), Raj Khosla in Film SHAREEF BADMASH (Dev Anand, Hema Malini), Hema Malini in Film DIL AASHNA HAI, J.P. Dutta in film KSHATRIYA and Shekhar Kapur in Film DUSHMANI & TIME MACHINE.

He has given his valuable services as a Production Manager / Executive / coordinator in some known films like SWAMI DADA, ANAND AUR ANAND, HUM NAUJAWAN, SACHE KA BOL BALA, AGNEEPATH, MISSION OF LOVE, ‘L’ AMANT, LITTLE BUDDHA, BANDIT QUEEN and THE JUNGLE BOOK.

The rise of Vishwamitra from an assistant director to an Independent Producer – Director is a story of great perseverance, hard work and an almost single minded determination to succeed. Countless young men and women leave the warmth and comfort of their homes, with a dream in their hearts and their eyes on the starry firmament of movies - yet it's only a handful who accomplish what they have set out for. Vishwa was just out of college, when the magnetic pull of films brought him to Bombay. Unsure, lost in this vast city he was virtually without a friend. But the ability to work and a willingness to learn stood by him. A bit of luck brought him into the fields of the legendary Dev Anand and Vishwa’s success story had begun.

While Dev Anand was his inspirational, practical help came to Vishwa through another close friend, Producer Director Ramesh Behl whom Vishwa has befriended when they were both working in Amarjeet’s ‘Duniya’. Ramesh who had the for tune of tasting the fruit of success earlier, never forgot his first film ‘Bhala Maanus’ Ramesh Behl was there with all his help and guidance. It was through his good offices Vishwa was able to sign stars like Randhir Kapoor, Neetu Singh and Aruna Irani.

A new director always holds a promise of uncertainty for the stars and his unit. It was not so with Vishwa. Right from the start everyone realised, here was a young director who knew his onions and here was a good film. With his limited resources Vishwa continued to make slow but steady progress. Never did any of his stars or technicians make his financial counter goings a bone of contention.

A beaming Vishwamitra, self assuming, as he stood blushing in a corner of the preview theatre little realising that he must slowly got used to the ‘Limelight’ which is on its way. The friends, both from and outside the trade who have seen the film are confidence about its success.

He has produced and directed two films like BHALA MANUS (Randhir Kapoor, Neetu Singh, Aruna Irani, Om Shivpuri etc.) in 1979 and MERE BAAD (Rakhee, Anupam Kher, Aruna Irani etc.) in 1988. MERE BAAD was an official entry to Indian Panorama and Tashkent International Film Festival (1988).
