List of Oz episodes
The following is a list of the episodes of the HBO television drama, Oz. Each episode addresses a particular "theme" which is addressed during Augustus Hill's narratives, as well as during certain points in the actual episode. During the first six episodes of season 6, Augustus Hill shares the narration with another inmate. In the season 5 episode "Variety" the narratives were replaced by short songs sung by series characters, in a variety show format.

The first season of Oz starred Ernie Hudson as Warden Leo Glynn, Terry Kinney as Emerald City Unit Manager Tim McManus, Harold Perrineau as inmate and narrator Augustus Hill, and Eamonn Walker as new inmate and devout Muslim Kareem Saïd.

Season 1 chronicled the spiritual and political journeys of many of the characters as they descend into insanity, rise and fall politically, and seek redemption. The season showed how the different gangs fight each other as well as the prison system, culminating in a riot in which the inmates take over Emerald City.

| In Oswald Maximum Security Penitentiary, Tim McManus opens Em city, an experimental unit that is different from all the cell blocks in Oz. We get a glimpse of daily routine life within Oz itself. Former lawyer, Tobias Beecher is jailed for DUI and finds it difficult to adjust to prison life, after being roomed with one of the most dangerous inmates, Simon Adebisi, Aryan inmate, Verne Schillinger saves him only to find things go from bad to worse for him. Muslim Kareem Said arrives and says that he now runs Oz. Another inmate, Dino Ortalani makes enemies fast and ends him up getting burned. | ||||||

| Governor Devlin reinstates capitol punishment with Keane being the first man executed, Tobias Beecher tries to redeem himself by trying to appeal on his behalf but Schillinger stops him in his tracks. | The drug epidemic grows as the efforts of the staff trying to stop it fail, Scibetta sides with the gangsters and offers them a deal to join him only to find out that one of them is not who he says he is and plugs him up. Diane Whittlsey meets a old friend and joins him in smuggling cigarettes to make ends meat. Said is diagnosed with hypertension but refuses to take his medication. An anonymous tip leads to one of the officers getting arrested for smuggling drugs into Oz. McManus and Sister Pete find out that Beecher has found a new addiction to kill his pain, Sister Pete tries to get him into counselling but with no luck, Schillinger decides to give him a makeover. | ||||||

| The staff realize that they are not dealing with senior inmates very well so they decide to give them a senior citizens unit, with no success. McManus starts behaving strangely and is somewhat permanently attached to Em city. Rebadow decides to leave with God's aid but fails. Ricardo Alvarez has Alzheimer's, Mukada and Sister Pete debate that he should be released. Schillinger grows tired of Beecher and gives him a T-shirt with the confederate flag on it, knowing it'll make him a target for the African American inmates, O'Reilly gives him PCP and Beecher takes a stand against Schillinger with blinding results. O'Reilly and Adebisi know that Schibetta is driving a wedge between them so they come up with a plan to kill him. Basketball star, Jackson Vayhue comes to Oz, Augustus Hill, who is his role model tries to win his respect but Vayhue gets him to take drugs to prove his loyalty to him. Said succumbs to a heart attack and Husseni Mershah, who does not share Said's enthusiasm let's him die. | ||||||

| Following his heart attack, Said banishes Huseni Mershah, but Mershah tells Glynn and McManus about Said's plans to start a riot, following a shakedown, he is transferred out of Em City where he is labeled an outcast and commits suicide later on. Donald Groves, who wants to follow Said, decides to kill Glynn but this backfires in the result of an officer getting killed in the process; while Groves is awaiting execution, the guards brutally beat the inmates for retaliation. Hill admires cellist, Eugene Dobbins and through this decides to find another role model than Vayhue. O'Reilly and Adebisi take down Schibetta with tragic results. Beecher manages to stand up to Schillinger in messy way. | ||||||

Season two of Oz continued to show the aftermath of the riot and the lessons each of the characters learned from it. Throughout the course of the season, each of its principal characters were forced to confront their own demons, and some prevail where others falter.

| Ten months after the riot, Em city reopens and McManus lays down new ground rules to make lives better. He starts by making a high school education program. Peter Schibetta, the son of deceased mob boss Nino Schibetta, decides to find the one responsible for his father's death, he also knows a secret about Glynn. Schillinger is up for parole but Beecher does what he can to stop him. Glynn's daughter is brutally raped and he takes his frustrations out on Alvarez. | Alvarez finds out who raped Glynn's daughter and an elderly inmate, Agamemmnon Busmalis, decides to dig his way out of Oz. Kenny Wangler adapts well to reading but Adebisi makes him stop. Insane inmate William Giles starts talking to Sister Peter Marie in a strange way. Said, who has been reading up on judicial litigation, decides to help Hill, who thinks the judge presiding at his trial took a bribe. Ryan O'Reilly is visited by his mentally-challenged brother Cyril before undergoing breast cancer surgery at the expense of the prison. | The Aryan brotherhood comes back in full force and make one of the inmates take responsibility on a murder committed by them. At Hill's hearing, they discover that there was no misjustice in his conviction. McManus decides to make one of his students, Poet, famous. After O'Reilly has surgery, he starts developing feelings for Dr. Nathan. Schibetta decides to get revenge on Adebisi by hiring Alvarez but Adebisi makes a deal with Alvarez which he declines. Beecher gets a new cellmate, Chris Keller, who is actually working with Schillinger to get revenge on. | ||||||

| The high school program comes to a complete end after graduation. Poet, whose poetry was published, is released. McManus finds out the truth about Ross' murder, Hill wants to join in with Busmalis' escape. Glynn gives his brother up to stop Schibetta from taking power over him. Beecher and Keller's relationship deepens when Beecher's wife commits suicide. Sister Pete learns what Giles is saying has something to do with her husband's death. O'Reilly wants to prove his love for her by having his brother kill her husband. | ||||||

| Said represents Schillnger, Whittlsey lies about Ross' death and so does McManus. Bellinger starts receiving love letters from an anonymous person. Schibetta tries to prove his loyalty by taking down Adebisi but backfires on him resulting in losing his leadership. Alvarez' loses his leadership in El Norte when Raoul "El Cid" Hernandez arrives. Another new inmate, Jiggy Walker, arrives with a secret regarding Devlin but turns out to be false. Sister Pete learns that Giles killed the man that killed her husband and awards him for his efforts. Cyril O'Reilly is imprisoned for Dr. Nathan's husband's murder. | A lonely Beecher continues to drink while missing Keller, Schillinger sets his sights on Cyril and Ryan tries to get him away from Schillinger only on the condition if O'Reilly confess to murdering Preston Nathan. The senate pass a law which requires sex offenders to register with their community, one prisoner, Robert Sippel, a former priest imprisoned for molesting a 14 year old boy, is released after 10 years and must register, much to the dismay of the community. Hill figures out ways on how to escape from prison. After being rejected by Bellinger, Adebisi continues to use on a regular basis. Mob boss, Antonio Nappa arrives to take revenge on Adebisi by organizing random drug testing, another new inmate, Kipkeme Jara becomes disgusted with what Adebisi has become, he starts to have illusions about Jara. Rebadow finds out that his grandson is dying from Leukemia, and wants to go to Disney World, one of the inmates, Jaz hoyt, organizes by raising a fund to help send him to Disney World with most of the prisoners donating money to him. Hernandez lets Alvarez prove his loyalty to him on the condition that he blinds a CO, Eugene Rivera. McManus, feeling guilty of lying about Ross' murder breaks it off with Whittlsey by transferring her out of Em city. Poet is sent back to Oz for murder and drugs. | ||||||

| Aryan prisoner, Mark Mack finds Busmalis' tunnel and arranges for new CO supervisor, Karl Metzger, who unknowingly is working with the brotherhood, to transfer him and his cellmate, Mack and his cellmate are killed when the tunnel collapses on them. Hill figures out a way of escape. Sippel has a rough time adjusting to life on the outside and comes back to Oz to work for Mukada, he then meets the boy he molested 10 years ago, Schillinger is disgusted with Sippel and crucifies him in the middle of the gym. Alvarez blinds Rivera but realizes he won't be able to adjust to Solitary, Rivera, in need of a blood transfusion finds out that Ryan O'Reilly has the blood type that Rivera needs to pull through but will do so on the condition that Cyril is transferred to Em City, which he agrees and O'Reilly confesses his part in Preston Nathan's murder. Keller is released from the hole and breaks it off with Beecher, he and Schillinger, along with Metzger break Beecher's heart and other things in the process. Adebisi continues to suffer delusions and finds peace, Nappa sees this as an opportunity to rally the other gangsters and set up Adebisi for murdering Jara, resulting in getting his sent to the psych ward. Said is offered clemency by Devlin, which results in the other muslim prisoners being jealous, but instead Said humiliates Devilin exposing the truth of Devlin's actions after the riot and rejecting the pardon. Hill goes along with his plan to escape. | ||||||

| The name of the prison changes to Oswald State Correctional facility level 4. Governor Devlin makes a deal with Weigart, a pharmaceutical corporation that is cutting costs to the state prison medical board, this results in Alvarez, who is suicidal in being rejected his medicine and is not being fed for blinding Rivera. Wangler, who dubs himself brickz, takes new inmate Malcolm Coyle under his wing, Nappa who suspects he's undercover, decides to have Wangler prove his loyalty to him. Adebisi is released from the psych ward and decides not to fight back. Clayton Hughes, who is a close friend of Glynn whose father was killed in the line of action, is hired. Another new CO, Claire Howell, sets her sights on McManus. O'Reilly wants to get revenge on Schillinger by causing trouble between him and the bikers. Richie Hanlon is sent to death row and Bellinger finds him intriguing. Said has a meeting Scott Ross' sister in trying to get her to join the lawsuit, in which he starts to show feeling for her. McManus finds out the truth of Metzger and tries to get Beecher to testify on what happened to him, which he declines, Keller starts to feel guilty for his part and wants to prove his love to him so he confesses the truth to McManus and Beecher gets sweet revenge on Metzger. | ||||||

| With Metzger dead, McManus brings in a childhood friend, Sean Murphy to become supervisor and with his help, organize a boxing tournament. Coyle, who is working in the barbershop, confesses a strange tale to Hill, who doesn't take the news very well. A lawsuit is in effect against the state. Said who does not want his judgment about his faith clouded, decides to fast. McManus and Howell's relationship takes a turn for the worse. Hughes feels that he doesn't have what it takes to be a CO. Schillinger's son is arrested for possession of drugs. Keller is sent back to Em City but Schillinger exacts his revenge on him. Adebisi wants to work in the AIDS ward in hopes to learn about the disease but his true motives become clear when he gets revenge on Nappa. Alvarez continues to show signs of agitation, and Dr. Fredrick Garvey, who is head of the organization, gives her two weeks notice for disagreeing with him, Mukada tries to comfort Alvarez by giving him food, when he refuses the COs continue to take their frustrations out on him, Sister Pete decides to start a victim/offender program, in which Mukada wants the first session to be between Alvarez and Rivera, Glynn disagrees and Alvarez ends his pain the only way he knows how. | ||||||

| Following the suicide attempt by Alvarez, Dr. Nathan decides to expose Garvey, Devlin instead exposes Garvey's past on the condition the Weigart will overlook their policies. Hill is in protective custody confessing in Coyle's murdering a family, Said and other leaders want to protect Hill, but Nappa takes matters in his own hands. Said's efforts to practice his religion takes another turn when he and the other Muslim prisoners goes on hunger strike, McManus and Glynn have no choice but to give in by allowing Said to have food in his cell. After Howell tries to apologize for her actions, McManus wants to break it off with her, after assaulting a prisoner, she is fired. The boxing tournament gets underway with Pancamo and Cyril winning their first matches. Rebadow has diabetes and after he faints he decides to meet his son and grandson whom he has never met before or were aware of his presence. Nappa finds out he is HIV positive and transferred out of Em City. Keller continues to prove his love for Beecher by helping him get revenge on Schillinger when the arrival of a new inmate attracts their attention. | ||||||

| Beecher befriends Schillinger's son as a means to get back at him. Howell sues McManus for sexual harassment and is reinstated. Said cannot fight the feelings that he has for Patricia Ross. Keller manipulates Sister Pete in discovering why she became what she became. Rivera agrees to meet with Alvarez and Alvarez is released from Solitary and participates in the upcoming boxing match against homosexual Jason Cramer, where O'Reilly uses his tricks in letting Cramer win. Hughes tries to earn respect his own way, which costs him his position in Em City and is transferred to the library. Hanlon's murder conviction is overturned and Nikolai Stanislofsky gets revenge but slits the wrong throat. Nappa decides to confess everything he's done in the course of his life. Adebisi recruits the Latinos to try to run with the Sicilians' drug trade. Wangler gets disturbing news that his son may be getting hurt and gets his comrades to take care of the matter. | ||||||

| In the final first-round boxing fight, Hamid Khan easily overpowers Kenny Wangler; as a means of revenge, Poet exposes Said's relationship with Patricia Ross, who is getting threatening calls. Adebisi reverts back to his old self and takes over the homeboys following Wangler's return from his wife's funeral and scarring Poet and Pierce. Sister Pete tries to get to the bottom of why Alvarez did what he did to Rivera but cannot confess the truth. McManus tries to recruit Sister Pete, Whittlsey, and Dr. Nathan to be character witnesses at his trial, but Dr. Nathan says she would like to hear Howell's side of the story first. New inmate Yuri Kosygin arrives and Nappa decides to offer his hand in friendship, which he declines, the Sicilians warn his sponsor, Stanislofsky to keep him in line before anything bad will happen. | As O'Reilly continues to fix the fights so his brother wins, William Cudney, who has unknowingly been helping him, learns the truth about O'Reilly's actions and when he decides to go to the authorities, O'Reilly hires Kosygin to save him, as O'Reilly puts it. Cyril defeats Pancamo with O'Reilly's help, Stanislofsky is worried about Kosygin's presence so he confesses to Pancamo that it was he who spiked his spritzer with heroine, Kosygin tries to get at Stanislofsky but this ends him up in Solitary for life. As Alvarez prepares to meet Rivera, he sees the deeds of his actions and is crushed. Nappa's new cellmate, Nat Ginzburg, decides to help out in writing his memoirs, Pancamo gets word of this and tries to stop him. Adebisi reveals to Wangler that he has a plan to break McManus and get one of his own kind to run Em City. Hughes thinks about trying for the SORT team while Mukada discovers who killed his father. Beecher, who feels guilty for Andrew's death goes to Said for forgiveness. Khan does not support this and takes leadership of the Muslims. | ||||||

| As Alvarez meets Rivera and his wife face to face, Alvarez cannot come to terms of why he did what he did to Rivera. Sister Pete learns that Keller was manipulating her so she could reach Beecher but to no avail, she comes back to feelings that feels she wants to quit the convent. A visit from Carlo's sister, which does not happen, reveals that he will not get no more visits. the COs decide to throw Hughes a birthday celebration, Mukada goes to Glynn and finds out he killed Samuel Hughes, Glynn tells Clayton the whole truth and says that Samuel died at the hands of his stupidity. When Nappa's memoirs are complete, he is given a final last meal. Adebisi makes Wangler confess that McManus sexually molested him and Adebisi goes public with the news, Bellinger, who believes McManus is innocent, tries to get his advice on how she should be executed, who all of a sudden gets a stunning surprise. Adebisi gives Khan a pep talk on fighting his next opponent, in which he is successful. Said tells Beecher that if he wants forgiveness, he should forgive Keller and Schillinger. While he forgives Keller, Schillinger lets him know how he feels. | ||||||

| As Christmas approaches, Alvarez decides to go back to Solitary but not before rejecting a gift from his former buddies, which ends Ricardo in a body bag. Bellinger, who is pregnant, decides to go forward with the execution but Sister Pete steps in and convinces Devlin to commute her sentence, Bellinger warns her that she will be bowing down before Satan. Racial tensions are at an all time rate in Oz when after Whittlsey and Howell fight over McManus, he feels that Glynn does not support him very well, and they continue after the final boxing match, which sees Cyril defeat Khan unexpectedly in a brutal manner. As the new millennium approaches, Schillinger gathers all the white inmates together who have differences to put them aside for the moment, while Adebisi does the same with the African American inmates. Tensions are also amongst the staff as well, especially Hughes, after disagreeing with Glynn is fired. Glynn puts the prison in lockdown and the new millennium arrives, Adebisi gets a special surprise in his pod. | ||||||

| After a shoot out, which leaves four dead, Glynn is forced to fire McManus in order to cement his status as a nomination for Lieutenant Governor. Beecher starts to feel lonely after Keller is wounded, but is in better spirits when Schillinger's other son, Hank, visits him. Hill thinks he sees a familiar face when his new cellmate, Desmond Mobay, aka John Basil, discovers this. The trial is underway but Said is in disagreement when he refuses to cooperate to put on an orange jumpsuit, so Beecher agrees to testify instead. Cramer discovers that at his trial there was a judgement of prejudice involved and asks Said for help. Bellinger starts to have intimacy with an unknown face and gets to know her new cellmates. | McManus' attempts to help Omar White seem helpless but insists that he will not give up on him. Hughes accepts his fate and asks to be executed for murdering Basil but Glynn refuses. Said continues to struggle with his demons but cannot find any comfort in it due to him assaulting Robson. Schillinger learns that his daughter-in-law, Carrie, was a prostitute and his granddaughter may not be his granddaughter at all. The COs bring give McManus and Brass an advantage in the next basketball game and a scout believes Brass has what it takes to play pro ball, but Morales cuts Brass dreams out. Supreme Allah and Tug Daniels work together to take over the drug trade but Daniels is tried in Redding's court and the result is at Daniels' own life. Devlin decides to suspend the death sentence of William Giles and suspends the death penalty until it is not deemed cruel and unusual. Cloutier exiles Kirk for using physical force on those who don't wish to convert. O'Reilly finally gets the upper on Howell and works with Connelly on what he thinks is the good for Ireland. | ||||||

| In trying to get back at Supreme Allah and save Redding, Hill concocts a plan to rid Oz of Supreme Allah. Morales survives a hit on him. Cloutier is forced to resign as minister, and loses his support with his followers, only to try and gain their respect, he offers to help them in their work but ends up bricked behind a wall. Hughes tries to rally the inmates in Solitary to rise up but an attempt to kill Glynn costs Hughes his own life. McManus and Murphy lose the final game to Vayhue and Busmalis and after failing to help White, he starts to wonder if he and Glynn are both capable of running Oz. Schillinger learns of Beecher's parole and vows to stop him from going free, while Beecher dreams of what it would feel like to be free; with his parole denied and Schillinger happy about interacting some more, Said feels the spirit of Adebisi take down Schillinger and Robson. Connelly's plan of blowing up Em City is almost in effect until O'Reilly has a change of heart, the bomb turns out to be a dud, but Oz is still left with a big bang. | ||||||

| The inmate variety show takes shape with Father Mukada as MC and White the featured performer, and with Omar White as the finale. Poet, in an attempt to hide the truth from Redding convinces Busmalis to tell Redding that one of the Italians did the deed. This results in Redding having DeSantos poisoned. Chucky's condition worsens and out of fear, he summons Sister Peter for spiritual help. Dr. Nathan counsels Peter Schibetta. Sister Pete starts looking for Schibetta's attackers only the 3 who know (Said, Beecher, Schillinger) refuse to divulge. tensions between Mukada and Kirk come to a boil when Mukada convinces Hoyt to squeal. In exchange for a blow job, Timmy Kirk has Clarence get someone to burn down Father Mukada's church and rectory. He is seriously injured, and two other priests die. Beecher and Keller anger McClain, who walks out. Howell gives Keller a free trip to Benchley Memorial. | Hill returns from Benchley Memorial but refuses to tell McManus who gave him the drugs. Cyril is found guilty, and Ryan informs Catherine and Sister Pete that he won't ask for clemency. He tells Cyril that he's going to be set free. Behind Ryan's back, Sister Pete, Suzanne, Catherine, and Father Meehan begin working on a press blitz to ensure the public won't let Cyril be executed. Ryan repays the Latinos for amputating Shupe's right arm by provoking Jia into a fight. When Officer Lopresti bullies Penders, Penders tells his dog to attack. Well-trained, the dog rips into Lopresti's throat. Penders is sent to solitary, leaving Miguel as the last of the three dog-trainers. Feeling guilty for his part in Brass' downslide and stealing of the lottery ticket, Tim helps Bob Rebadow track down a match for his grandson's transplant. Keller caught the same bus that took Hill back to Oz, only Keller has permanent hearing loss in his right ear. Sister Pete tries in vain to help him. Meanwhile, a guilt-ridden Beecher admits his behavior to Said, who tells him he has to punish himself by not seeing Keller if he truly wants to atone. Beecher agrees. Vern then arranges for Adam to "escape", which leads to Adam being electrocuted on the barb-wire fence at the gates. Beecher is, as always, guilt-ridden. | ||||||

Glynn is outraged and tells the board of Miguel's many misdeeds. Miguel tries, but reaches his limit with a hateful inquisitor and beats him bloody, causing his 50th trip back to solitary. Gloria's guilt over Pancamo grows as he lapses into a coma. McManus tries to comfort her, telling her even doing one good thing, as he has with Omar, makes up for all the crap. Omar threatens Cutler in the storage closet, which leads to a fight and Omar nearly killing him. A betrayed, furious McManus sends Omar back to solitary. Beecher's guilt leads him to come forward with news of Vern raping Winthrop and Guenzel, sending Vern to solitary with the help of corroborating witnesses and evidence. Beecher then defies Said and returns to Keller's arms (through cell bars). Keller is found guilty of murder and sentenced to death. Rebadow leaves Oz for the first time in over 35 years to visit his near-death grandson. Cyril is moved to death row and beats on several guards (with Keller's encouragement) when he realizes he's going to die. He is somewhat comforted when Pete brings his sock puppet. Morales convinces default-Sicilian leader Urbano to kill Redding. Urbano crosses his path, preparing to stab him, but Hill wheels in front of his father figure, the blade cutting into him. | ||||||

Alvarez tries to right wrongs and keep in the straight life. Glynn continues digging into the web of the Mayors murder, but his investigation will come to an end, one way or another. | ||||||

| Devlin is accused of being involved in the deaths of Mayor Lowen and Glynn, among others. Prior to the pending investigation, he fires McManus from Em City. Querns replaces Glynn as warden and of course plans to make waves. Brass goes completely nuts and tries to kill Jackson Vayhue (now paroled and playing ball again) after Vayhue snubs him. He's arrested and sent away. Father Mukada learns that Hoyt's rich parents adopted him at birth. Mukada tracks down his mother and they share a loving, tender reunion. As he is also cut off from Cutler's wife, Miguel slips into the seductive arms and drugs of his cellmate, Torquemada. Rebadow and Stella reunite. Pablo stabs another inmate and goes to the Hole (where the poor prisoner is now stripped naked AND held in a restraining chair). Vern is stabbed in the stomach by Beecher. Although Gloria tries to comfort him as best she can, Ryan is barely able to cope without Cyril in his life. Ryan forgives his father for past sins, and they decide to start over. Keller told Beecher that he'd taken care of the Aryans, and those cryptic words come true when a mysterious package arrives at the post office. The contents are a poisonous powder which kills all the Aryans immediately. In Oz's final moments, each section of the prison is evacuated, and every last characters gets on a yellow bus, ready to vanish into TV history. | ||||||
