Von Steuben Metropolitan Science Center, otherwise known as Von Steuben High School, is a high school in Chicago, Illinois. Located on the north branch of the Chicago River, Von Steuben offers a strong curriculum in math and science courses and consistently ranks at or near the top in test scores, graduation rate, and college matriculation versus other Chicago public high schools. It has one of the strongest Advanced Placement programs in Illinois.

The school is named for Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben.

Von Steuben was named an Outstanding American High School by US News and World Report in 1999 and mentioned in Newsweek Magazine's America's best High Schools list in 2003.

"The mission of Von Steuben Metropolitan Science Center is to provide a demanding and stimulating college preparatory curriculum to the school's diverse student body, utilizing challenging teaching methods and state of the art technological equipment in all areas of study, with an emphasis placed on the areas of science and mathematics. Fundamental to the school's mission is maintaining a safe and secure learning environment that encourages continued development of each student's confidence, self-esteem, recognition of the similarities we share and the acceptance of our differences, while simultaneously stimulating a life long love of learning, effective problem solving, and service to the community."[1]

Von Steuben is recognized as one of the most ethnically diverse high schools in the Chicago Public system. Currently, the student body is 31.6% Hispanic, 29.9% African American, 24.3% Caucasian, 14 % Asian/Pacific Islander, and 0.2% American Indian/Alaskan Native. Approximately 55% of the student population comes from low income families.

Although the number of students that met or exceeded standards on the 2008 PSAE increased from 2007, Von Steuben is on the Illinois State Board of Education's Academic Watch List because of failure to make "adequate yearly progress" in Mathematics. [2]
