WBNG-DT2 is the CW-affiliated television station for Upstate New York's Eastern Southern Tier. The station is part of The CW Plus, a special CW feed broadcasting on cable and/or over-the-air on a digital signal. It is a second digital subchannel of CBS affiliate WBNG-TV owned by the Granite Broadcasting Corporation. Over-the-air, WBNG-DT2 broadcasts a standard definition digital signal on VHF channel 7.2 (virtual channel 12.2 via PSIP) from a transmitter on Ingraham Hill Road southwest of downtown. The station can also be seen on Time Warner Cable channel 11 (hence the on-air branding Binghamton CW 11). WBNG-DT2's parent station has studios on Columbia Drive in Johnson City.

History

The station began in late-1998 alongside the launch of The WB 100+ and its cable-only affiliates. Since it was cable exclusive, the call sign WBXI was used in a fictional manner. It was operated by WBNG which provided sales and promotional duties. Meanwhile, UPN was seen in Binghamton on low-powered WBPN-LP. On January 24, 2006, The WB and UPN announced the two networks would end broadcasting and merge. The new combined service would be called The CW with the letters representing the first initial of corporate parents CBS (the parent company of UPN) and the Warner Bros. unit of Time Warner.

On February 22, News Corporation announced it would start up another new network called MyNetworkTV. This new service, which would be a sister network to Fox, would be operated by Fox Television Stations and its syndication division Twentieth Television. MyNetworkTV was created in order to give UPN and WB stations, not mentioned as becoming CW affiliates, another option besides becoming Independent.

The second network was also created in order to compete against The CW. WBPN joined MyNetworkTV on September 5, while on September 18, WBXI began serving as the area's CW affiliate for the network as part of The CW Plus. This is a similar service to The WB 100+. It was not until September 2007 when the station started to be simulcasted on a new second digital subchannel of WBNG and began using the WBNG-DT2 call letters in an official manner.

Like all CW Plus stations in the Eastern Time Zone, WBNG-DT2 offers the nationally syndicated morning show The Daily Buzz on weekdays from 6 until 9. There is also a nightly prime time newscast seen on this station known as Action News at 10 on Binghamton CW 11. The thirty minute broadcast competes with another show seen at the same time on Fox affiliate WICZ-TV.
