WMEU-CA is a class A station in Chicago, Illinois. It is owned by Weigel Broadcasting, which also owns sister stations WCIU-TV and WWME-CA. The station is an extension of WWME's classic programming format, and brands as "MeToo". MeToo's digital signal is carried on channel 32 (virtual channel 48.1), as a subchannel on WCIU-TV channel 26.4,[1] and on local cable systems.
[edit] History
Prior to its format change as MeToo (on March 1, 2008), Channel 48 was WFBT-CA, a time brokered, ethnic television station. That programming was previously on channel 23, which Weigel converted to "Me-TV", and changed the call letters to WWME-CA. Prior to being an ethnic channel, it was listed as an affiliate of TBN.
On September 14, 2009, MeToo's schedule was adjusted to become all-dramatic programs and films to streamline the schedules of both Me-TV stations, while Me-TV schedule based on comedic programs. MeToo also carried ESPN+ coverage of Big East Conference basketball, which allows it to carry some games of the DePaul Blue Demons. Most of those games can now be seen on WCIU-TV new subchannel, The U Too.[2]
WMEU-CA applied for a digital companion channel on channel 46. But because of possible interference of WHME-TV's new digital signal on that same channel, WMEU later applied to move to channel 32, formerly occupied by WFLD. On June 8, 2010, the station was granted a construction permit for their digital signal.[3] Its license to cover for its digital signal was granted on June 13, 2011; the digital signal didn't sign on until July 11, with the call sign WMEU-LD.[4] However, since WMEU-LD's signal does not cover the entire Chicagoland market, MeToo's digital signal on 26.4 remains.
On September 22, 2010, WMEU-CA changed its call letters to WCUU-CA, only to revert back to WMEU-CA on November 5.[5]
On December 1, 2010, WCIU dropped their FBT foreign broadcasting digital subchannel and for two weeks aired a simulcast of WCIU-TV on WCIU digital subchannel 26.6. The new digital subchannel, The U Too, was officially launched on January 5, 2011 and it airs on WCIU digital subchannel 26.2, replacing Me-TV, which moved to WCIU digital subchannel 26.3 on December 15, 2010.[1][6][7] Digital subchannel 26.6 disappeared on that day while 26.2 aired a simulcast of WCIU-TV. In addition, PSIP channel 48.1 was temporarily discontinued while 23.1 reverted to being the virtual channel number for WWME-CA (23.2 was discontinued at that time, but has since picked up Bounce TV).
On December 15, 2010, MeToo added comedy programming, as it merged with Chicago's local Me-TV, which currently broadcasts on WWME-CA and WCIU 26.3, bringing the two local channels together with comedy and drama programming for the Chicago area. This is the result of the nationalization of Me-TV which is a channel available for over the air stations nationwide. The national Me-TV airs on WCIU subchannel 26.3 and WWME-LD, and the new MeToo moved to WCIU subchannel 26.4 (remaining on WMEU-CA).[8] In addition, This TV moved to WCIU subchannel 26.5.[1]
