Walnut Creek is an elevated subway station in Walnut Creek, California, on the Pittsburg/Bay Point – SFO/Millbrae line of the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system.

Location

Walnut Creek station is in Walnut Creek, a major suburb in the East Bay area of the San Francisco Bay Area, one of the largest metropolitan areas of the United States. The station itself is at the intersection of three major roads - Ygnacio Valley Road, Hillside Avenue, Riviera Avenue - and an off-ramp from the Sinclair Freeway ().

Transit-oriented development

Due to Walnut Creek's high ridership and large catchment area, BART has proposed that the station be the center of a 5.3-acre (2.1-ha) transit-oriented development scheme which includes 440 residential units, 8,700 sq ft (810 m²) of office space, 33,000 sq ft (3,100 m²) of retail space, and 1,373 parking spaces.

History

Walnut Creek station opened on 21 May 1973 as part of an extension from MacArthur to Concord.

Ridership

With 5,920 exits each weekday, Walnut Creek is the busiest BART station on the Pittsburg/Bay Point – SFO/Millbrae line and the second-busiest in Contra Costa County, with El Cerrito del Norte being the busiest in the county. In its 2004 comprehensive station plan for Walnut Creek, BART predicted a massive increase in ridership by 2025, estimating that over 18,000 passengers would use the station daily (both entries and exits).

Service

Walnut Creek station is on the Pittsburg/Bay Point – SFO/Millbrae line, the busiest line of the BART system, with trains heading southwest to Oakland, downtown San Francisco, and San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and northeast to Concord. During peak hours trains arrive at frequent intervals of up to 4–6 minutes; during off-peak hours this is reduced to 15-20 minutes. Transfers to the Richmond-Millbrae and Richmond-Fremont lines are available at MacArthur and a transfer to the Dublin/Pleasanton line is available at West Oakland.

Station layout

Walnut Creek utilises a simple side platform layout with two tracks. Access to the tracks is provided by a staircase, escalator, and elevator from the mezzanine, which houses nine faregates. Sustained patronage at the station has caused it to become overcrowded; BART is planning on building a second entrance, including new faregates and platform access to relieve possible emergency hazards.
