The Wellington Firebirds are one of six New Zealand first-class cricket teams that make up New Zealand Cricket. It is based in Wellington. It competes in the Plunket Shield first class (4-day) competition, the Ford Trophy domestic one day competition and the HRV Cup.
The Firebirds have the best Plunket Shield record of any team since the start of the millennium. They won the title in 2000/01 and 2003/04 and were runners up in 2001/02, 2002/03 and 2005/06.

Home games are usually played at the Basin Reserve ground in Wellington, which is also used by the OBU senior club rugby side during the offseason. Wellington also play some First Class fixtures at Karori Park, and Twenty20 at Westpac Stadium when the Basin Reserve is unavailable.
