The Western Freeway is an ambitious transportation infrastructure project in Mumbai, India that envisions the construction of multiple bridges over the Arabian Sea to reduce traffic-congestion between the suburbs and the city. The first phase of the project, known as the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, was completed in June 2009, and links Bandra in the north and Worli to the south with a cable stayed bridge spanning the Mahim Bay. This development has relieved the congestion on the Mahim Causeway, which until then had been the only road between the suburbs and the main city of Mumbai on the western sea front.

Three additional stages of the project are in various stages of planning or commissioning. As of 26 February 2010, the second stage of the project, which envisages an extension of the sea-link from Worli to Haji Ali, has been contracted to a consortium led by Reliance Infrastructure. Additional extensions from Bandra to Versova in the northern suburbs of Mumbai, and from Haji Ali to Nariman Point (and further onto Cuffe Parade) via Priyadarshini Park and Malabar Hill, are currently in the planning stage.

[edit] Bandra-Worli Sea link

The Sea Link reduces travel time between Bandra and Worli from 45–60 minutes to 7 minutes. The link has an average daily traffic of around 37,500 vehicles per day. The toll charged is INR50 (US$1.1) for one-way and INR75 (US$1.65) for a return journey.

[edit] Worli-Haji Ali section

This section is the immediate extension of the Bandra Worli Sea Link further into the heart of Mumbai city. The current design allows for a clover leaf junction at Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan Marg (at Worli) for ramp up of traffic onto the sea link. This includes twin carriageway of 3.315 km termed as main line and connectors at Worli and Haji Ali. While mainline is to be made of entirely precast segmental spans, the connectors will be made of segmental and I beams. A 10 lane toll plaza is proposed at the start of the section at Worli.

On January 13, 2011 Reliance Infrastructure has been given the go ahead for the proposed sealink, with construction expected to start in March 2012 and be completed in 2014. The Haji Ali connector is expected to land 400m ahead of the Haji Ali dargah square, and the Worli Connector on Abdul Gaffar Khan Road.[1]

[edit] Haji Ali-Nariman Point/Cuffe Parade section

Feasibility consultations have been launched for the extension of the sea link from Haji Ali (once the second phase is complete) to Priyadarshini Park, and onward to Malabar Hill. It is proposed that the sea link shall make land fall at Malabar Hill, and cut through under the hill (using a bore-and-blast deep tunnel) to reach Tambe Chowk, and then proceed to Nariman Point/Cuffe Parade using a shallow cut-and-cover tunnel.

[edit] Versova-Bandra section

This section is the latest addition to the project, and is intended to ease the commute from the northern suburbs on the western side of the island of Mumbai to the downtown sections of the city. In its current form, it is proposed that this section shall be a combination of sea and land over-bridge. As of February 2010, the alignment is currently under consideration.
