The Western Australian Legislative Assembly is elected from 59 single-member electoral districts. The Western Australian Legislative Council is elected from 6 electoral regions of six members each, or 36 members in all. These are often referred to as electorates or seats.

The Electoral Act 1907 requires regular review of electoral boundaries, in order to keep the relative size of electorates within certain limits. Electoral boundaries are determined by an independent Office of Electoral Distribution Commissioners, supported by the Western Australian Electoral Commission. The last electoral distribution was completed in October 2011; it applies for the March 2013 state general elections.[1]
