Welcome to WikiProject Yoga. Several Wikipedians have formed this collaboration resource and group dedicated to improving Wikipedia's coverage of Yoga and the organization of information and articles on this topic. This page and its subpages contain their suggestions and various resources; it is hoped that this project will help to focus the efforts of other Wikipedians interested in the topic. If you would like to help, please join the project, inquire on the talk page and see the to-do list below.

Objectives and Scope[edit]

The mission of WikiProject Yoga is to ensure that Yoga-related articles on Wikipedia are written:-

  • In an informative style
  • In a neutral and non-sectarian manner
  • Using verifiable and reliable sources

This project is about discussing issues which affect Yoga-related articles in general. Discussions about particular articles should be handled on the talk pages of those articles.

The scope of this WikiProject is to improve, (primarily) the quality and, (if at all) the quantity of information about Yoga available on Wikipedia.

Guidelines[edit]

If you are a newcomer, the most important and often over-looked point to remember while editing Wikipedia is: You cannot insert your own particular viewpoints into articles. Articles should typically reflect verifiable opinion, in neutral and balanced prose.

The important thing to remember is that all sources and articles must conform to Wiki policies such as WP:NOR, WP:V. and WP:NPOV.

Also remember to cite your sources correctly. If you feel a viewpoint merits mention, you can find some material which may constitute a reliable source by checking books, journals, articles, newspapers and other sources that are available online.

Things to watch[edit]

All original documents and text must use the original language as the primary source. This usually means that transliterations will come from Sanskrit (which usually appears in Devanagari) and use International Alphabet of Sanskrit Transliteration (IAST).

Housekeeping Instructions for the project[edit]

How to add articles to the project using the project template[edit]

to add a page/article to this project please place the following template at the top of the talk page.

 {{WikiProject Yoga|class=|importance=}}

If there are multiple project they should be combined using the BannerShell Template

{{WikiProjectBannerShell|1=
 {{WikiProject Yoga|class=Start|importance=High}}
 {{WikiProject Hinduism|class=Start|importance=Low}}
 {{WikiProject Health and fitness|class=Start|importance=Mid}}
 }}

How to request a picture for a Yoga article[edit]

Many articles can use more or better images. If these are not available in commons, it is possible to request them as follows:

{{Image requested|Yoga|of=Bharadvājāsanan II variation|free=yes}}

Where the parameter following of= is the description of the image requested. Once this is done the article will be listed in the Category:Wikipedia requested photographs of Yoga.

if a BannerShell is in use then add the template at its bottom

{{WikiProjectBannerShell|1=
 {{WikiProject Yoga|class=Start|importance=High}}
 {{WikiProject Hinduism|class=Start|importance=Low}}
 {{WikiProject Health and fitness|class=Start|importance=Mid}}
 {{Image requested|Yoga|of=Bharadvājāsanan II variation|free=yes}}
 }}

Remember, picture requests provide opportunities for more users to become involved with wikipedia and with the Yoga Project'.

How to annotate Yoga stubs[edit]

When you start a new yoga article it is a good idea to immediately annotate it as a Yoga stub. This will place it in an appropriate category which can be used for coordinate work on such new articles. It will also invite assessment from other project members. To do this add the following template in the final section (External Links) after the Yoga or Asana templates and before any categories.

{{Template:Yoga-stub}}

Open tasks[edit]

Images for asanas[edit]

Should images for an asana need to be added or improved, please check these resources:

so they should not be used on Wikipedia nor on Commons.

All are Creative Commons Licensed.

Recommended guidelines for encyclopedic Asana image inclusion:

  • High resolution.
  • The image should be cropped to show the Asana and not be a minor detail.
  • Clothing - according to the user feedback tool viewers are frustrated by images of practitioners wearing Karate suits[clarification needed]and expect images similar to the Light on Yoga, i.e. with anatomy revealing clothes.
  • Correct alignment.
  • Avoid rendered images.

Since we do not have such images these guidelines can be relaxed until more suitable images can be located.
