Course description[edit]

Cognitive Science combines psychology, artificial intelligence, neuroscience, neuropsychology, linguistics, philosophy, and anthropology to study how people think. Students will learn about how cognitive scientists approach problems in a diverse, integrated manner to help us understand how people learn and process, for example, concepts and language.

Wikipedia Article Creation or Revision: 25%. This assignment involves either significantly revising (i.e., rewriting) a current Wikipedia article, or creating a new one. The article will concern either a topic or a prominent researcher in Cognitive Science. You will use the Association for Psychological Science Wikipedia Initiative to do this assignment.

Timeline[edit]

Week 1, February 13th: Wikipedia Essentials[edit]

Assignments (due February 20th before midnight)
  • Choose a topic, create a Wikipedia account, create a user page, sign up on the list of students on the course page, and sign up and add the course code to the APS Wikipedia Initiative Site (course code = “WesPsychology 313952-000-ken”)
  • Find one journal article on your chosen topic and post its reference to your Wiki Sandbox using the cite menu journal template.
  • This initial step is worth 2% of your final grade and will be marked as complete/incomplete.

Week 2: Reading Week[edit]

Week 3: Using sources and Exploring the topic area[edit]

Assignments
  • Add 1-2 sentences of new information, backed up with a citation to an appropriate source, to your chosen Wikipedia article.
  • Compose a 15 item bibliography of relevant research and post it to the talk page of the article you are working on. Start reading the sources.

Week 4: Drafting starter articles[edit]

Assignments
  • If you are starting a new article, write a 3–4 paragraph summary version of your article (with citations) in your Wikipedia sandbox. If you are improving an existing article, write a summary version reflecting the content the article will have after it's been improved, and post this along with a brief description of your plans on the article's talk page.
  • Begin working with classmates and Online Ambassadors to polish your short starter article and fix any major transgressions of Wikipedia norms.
  • Continue research in preparation for expanding your article.

  • All students have started editing articles or drafts on Wikipedia.

Week 5: Building Articles[edit]

  • Begin expanding your article into a comprehensive treatment of the topic.

Week 6: Building articles and Giving Feedback[edit]

  • Expand your article into an initial draft of a comprehensive treatment of the topic.
  • Select two classmates' articles that you will peer review and copy-edit.
  • Peer review two of your classmates' articles. Leave suggestions on the article talk pages.
  • Copy-edit the two reviewed articles.

  • All articles have been reviewed by others. All students have reviewed articles by their classmates.

Week 7: Responding to feedback[edit]

  • Nominate your article for Good Article status.

Grading[edit]

Wikipedia contributions will be graded as follows:

  • 8%: Creating Wiki user names, signing up on APS site, adding name to Wiki page, adding course to APS, completing 11 APS Tutorials
  • 8%: New sentence(s) and 1 source, 15 item bibliography
  • 12%: Starter article/summary for editing
  • 12%: Peer review
  • 60%: Quality of main Wikipedia contributions
